The goals of the Recreation and Leisure Services Department are to: U Support and enhance diverse community based recreation programs and optimize the utilization of recreation facilities available within the community. U Create and deliver high quality Municipal Programming in response to the recreational interests of citizens of Vanderhoof and the surrounding area. U Promote involvement in community recreation and leisure pursuits. We’d love to hear from you! Volunteer Opportunities. Whether you are a student building your CAPP/Career Prep hours, looking for resume experience or a fun way to give back to your community, the Recreation and Leisure Services Department offers opportunities to volunteer. The District of Vanderhoof recreational and leisure programming for youth occurs on School District 91 Non-Instructional Days. Youth Rec Days, “Spring Break Bonanza” and our Summer Recreation Program offer many activities to keep kids healthy, active and involved in the community. Each spring, our annual Skateboard & BMX Competition showcases many talented riders and provides a venue for our budding local youth bands. Spectators are well entertained at this event! Nechako Valley WinterFest is Vanderhoof’s way of celebrating “Spirit of BC Week” and marking the three year countdown to the 2010 Winter Olympics. For more information call 567-4711 or visit www.vanderhoof.ca COMMUNITY PROFILE V rIVERSIDE pARK anderhoof sits at the geographical center of BC, nestled in the Fertile Nechako Valley which is surrounded by the scenic Sinkut, Blue and Pitka Mountains. The approximately 4600 residents of Vanderhoof enjoy the lifestyle of a rural setting and traditional values and have easy access to the amenities of the surrounding area. Outdoor Recreational opportunities abound, as we have numerous lakes and rivers for canoeing, boating, watersports and fishing. The Nechako River runs through Vanderhoof and each spring and fall thousands of Canada Geese stop at our Migratory Bird Sanctuary which is located along the Pacific Flyway. Forest Service Campsites, backcountry lodges, provincial parks and hundreds of miles of trail systems attract outdoor enthusiasts from all corners of the world who come to experience our abundance of wildlife, spectacular waterways and wild, open spaces. We have a myriad of sports, equestrian and recreational facilities. Murray Ridge (Fort St. James) offers uncrowded downhill skiing on groomed and off-piste runs with a vertical drop of 1,750 feet. From biathlon to classic cross country skiing, the Nechako Valley Sporting Association hosts Provincial Competitions and has raised world class athletes. Vanderhoof has produced two Olympians: Eddie Lebler (Austrian Hockey Team) and Tuppy Collard (Biathlon, Nagano 1998). Vanderhoof boasts a rich and varied cultural history from the Rich Hobson and Pan Phillips Legacy to Mary John Senior, an Order of Canada recipient and Author. Our vibrant art scene includes local performers Karen Cruise and Marcel Gagnon, and artist Annerose Georgeson. The Nechako Valley Arts Council actively seeks first class Canadian acts and offers an attractive line up of International and Canadian Films.
