GBS History
If you want something done right, sometimes you just have to do
it yourself.
That's why back in 1972, a group of 10 Upstate home builders—ever
in search of a better source for lumber, roofing, millwork and more—
decided to construct a company of their own. Who better to run a supply
business, they reasoned, than the very folks who purchase said supplies.
And thus, under the leadership of R. Buford Landers, began Greenville
Builders Supply.
With their history of success as the most solid of foundations, GBS
in mid-2011 laid plans for yet another expansion built on both new
and enhanced products, services and solutions. Focused as ever on its
building-based clientele, the company rebranded itself as GBS
Building Supply. Removing “Lumber” from its name emphasizes
not only strength as a lumber yard but also expertise in installed sales,
green products, remodeling/renovation design services and
commercial applications.
The GBS Difference
What makes GBS stand out from the crowd is its team of employees,
and the care they have for their customers. GBS employs many longterm employees with decades of product knowledge and expertise. The
GBS team works together to provide unsurpassed customer service. It is
embedded in their company and employees’ DNA. They also maintain a
highly trained staff for each specialty product they carry. By doing this,
GBS makes sure they can answer all of their customers’ questions and
provide them with the best solution for any project.
Nick Campbell, VP of Sales, Lawanna Dendy, VP of Administration,
Cindy Williams, VP of Purchasing, and Bob Barreto, CEO/President.
Within five years the company expanded into Anderson. To ensure a
name that embraced its growing geographical aspirations, Greenville
Builders Supply became GBS Lumber in September 1979. Subsequent
expansions included Hendersonville, NC, in 1981 and Six Mile in 2005.
From its four strategic locations, GBS now serves both Carolinas and
parts of Georgia.
Growing from a startup with just 10 workers to an employee-owned
company with a staff over 100 strong, GBS has thrived thanks to strong
executives and a supportive board of directors comprising pillars of the
home building community. Landers, the company’s first president, was
followed by Jim Harrell, then Ron McNeely and, most recently, Bob
Barreto. Two of the original board members—Graham Proffitt and John
Cothran—continue serving to this day.

Partnerships
Recently, GBS announced its partnership under US LBM Holdings.
This agreement provides GBS with increased capital and horsepower to
further expand product lines and services. A benefit of this partnership is
that it allows GBS to remain locally managed, as it has since 1972.
GBS is also very active with BuildPerks. Bob Barreto said, “Our
customers love BuildPerks. BuildPerks gives GBS the opportunity to
reward our local customer for their continued business and loyalty.
We are proud that some of our customers have been loyal through
generations of family builders.”

HANDCRAFTED HOMES | LIFELONG RELATIONSHIPS
In 1984, Gus and Belinda formed Gabriel Builders, named
after their oldest son, Gabe. Like many builders, they
started out building spec homes but their true passion
was in building high end custom homes. They now focus
exclusively on building luxury custom homes and construct
approximately 8- 10 homes a year. Their President, Gus
Rubio, brings to Gabriel Builders his experience as a Quality
Control Manager for a Fortune 100 company. Additionally,
they are licensed general contractors in both Carolinas,
and one of the few Master Builders in the state of South
Carolina. Most of their work is done on a design/build basis
in conjunction with their network of talented architects, but
they also work with clients who want to make modifications
to pre-existing plans. Their client list is quite impressive
and includes over 45 company presidents and CEO’s,
savvy entrepreneurs, 4 architects’ personal residences, a
congressional figure and a professional athlete; successful
professionals with the resources to choose any builder - chose
Gabriel Builders.
Gabriel Builders is not just any builder. As a state and
national award-winning builder, including being named The
2014 National Custom Builder of The Year, and The 2015
Ocean Magazine Builder of The Year, they believe that
several attributes have contributed to their success. Among
these are quality, customer service, and lifelong relationships.
Gabriel Builder’s clients can take comfort in their warranty,
not only because it offers some of the most comprehensive
coverage in the industry, but because they’ve been in this
business since 1984. They know what it takes to last in this
industry: hard work and integrity.

Builder Spotlight
Our team is dedicated to exceeding expectations for quality and customer satisfaction. Gabriel Builders
selects employees, contractors, and consultants that commit to understanding their roles in the system and
actively participating in this effort of continuous improvement. All team members are encouraged to offer
suggestions and recommendations for improving our systems and better serving our customers.
They enjoy not only working with their clients, but also making friendships
that truly last a lifetime. When I asked Belinda Rubio what her favorite
part of her job was, she said, “Getting to make new friendships with my
customers and having the opportunity to meet people from all over the
country. I am truly blessed to get to do something that I love every day.”
If you are a past customer of Gabriel Builders, then you know this is true.
They give new meaning to friendly customer service.
Gabriel Builders doesn’t just know what Handcrafted is, they have defined it.
“Handcrafted: it’s the attention to detail, our passion for
homebuilding, a product that is an expression of the owner with
every promise delivered. It’s the pride we take in knowing that every
single home is designed, crafted and built with extraordinary care. It’s
personal, and it extends to the relationships and trust that we build with
our customers.”
Gabriel Builders is currently building a new 3 story office in Mountain Park
Village. It will have a design center with a fully functional kitchen, small
theater room for presentations and movies, offices for the Gabriel Staff, and

Why have an Insurance-Backed
Structural Warranty
A structural warranty, from an established warranty provider, gives builders and homeowners
confidence that if qualified major structural damages develop in a home, those repairs will be the obligation of the warranty insurer rather
than the responsibility of the builder and homeowners. Structural damages occur more often than many builders and homeowners realize. In
parts of the U.S. that have expansive soils, 25% of all homes may experience some form of structural distress over their lifetime; up to 5%
may sustain major structural damages. A builder may purchase the warranty from a third-party company; however, coverage and insurance
backing varies greatly among the providers. A structural defect should be defined in accordance with HUD regulations that are designed
to cover homes for failure of designated load-bearing elements that meet certain criteria. Structural warranties protect both builders and
homeowners from all-too-common structural defects that arise after construction. These structural issues may not become apparent until
many years after the sale of the home. Even builders with an excellent history of no structural-defect claims
can find themselves dealing with a structural warranty issue years after closing. The majority of structural
claims are reported four to seven years after completion of the home.
Read The Definitive Guide to Structural Warranties from 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty®, offering you a deeper
look at what a structural warranty is, the benefits of using them and so much more. Your questions will be
answered when you download the guide today.

Builders Help Build A
Better Community
The Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina (BIA) contributed over $96,000 to local charities and to students in 2015.
Donations and grants were made by the BIA, the Building Industry Charitable Foundation, the BIA Sales & Marketing and
Remodelers Councils.
Michael N. Nieri, President of the Building Industry Charitable Foundation Board of Trustees, comments, “We support charities and
participate in community outreach programs because our members are concerned, caring professionals, and they believe their involvement
makes the communities where they live and work better places.” President and founder of Great Southern Homes, Nieri volunteered to
build “Toby’s Cottage” at Boys Farm in Newberry, a 5068 square foot cottage at no cost to Boys Farm on behalf of the Building Industry
Association with support from the Charitable Foundation. “We are honored to help accommodate the growing need for children to have a
safe home and give them hope for generations to come” said Nieri.
Donations included $45,000 in support of flood relief efforts to restore housing to victims from the historic floods in October. On December
28-30, Home Works of America in partnership with the BIA and more than a dozen community partners, hosted a three-day flood response
event, ReBuild Together. “Following the historic flooding of October 2015, Home Works of America felt a unique burden as a local home
repair organization. We knew our capacity was limited, so we immediately began raising funds and mobilized a group of community leaders
to help us plan a joint rebuilding effort. To get started, we looked no further than the BIA,” commented Jim Powell, the Executive Director of
Home Works of America.
The Building Industry Charitable Foundation made $42,250 in scholarship donations last year to 29 students. The scholarship program was
started in 2000, and the Charitable Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling over $407,250. Funds for the Charitable Foundation are
raised through events such as the BIA Golf Classic held each year and private and corporate donations.
The Sales & Marketing Council of Greater Columbia (SMC), made many charitable contributions to St. Lawrence Place this year. St.
Lawrence Place is a program of the Trinity Housing Corporation, providing transitional housing for homeless families in Columbia. The
purpose of the transitional housing program is to provide a “breathing space” for families between emergency shelter and permanent housing.
During this transitional program, families regain stability, obtain employment or additional training, and develop life skills, which begin the
long process back to independence.
SMC Members participated in a variety of projects to benefit St. Lawrence Place. Throughout the year,
members held separate drives to collect and distribute needed items to the families of St. Lawrence Place
including a school supplies drive and the adoption of resident families for the Christmas holidays.
In addition, members of the Columbia Remodelers Council have donated time toward renovation
projects for those needing home repairs. Most recently, Council members remodeled a bathroom and
made the home wheelchair accessible for a young boy in Lexington with Angel Man’s Syndrome. The
small bathroom was converted into a waterproof, roll-in bathroom that will enhance the quality of life of
the child.
