Page 3 Welcome I want to start by saying the Central States Beefmaster Breeders Association is determined to become a reliable and consistent genetic supplier of Beefmaster and Beefmaster Advancer genetics to both the commercial and purebred cattlemen. It is CSBBA’s intent to create long term relationships with our buyers and friends. Please don’t hesitate to let us know what you like about the bulls in this presentation, as well as what we can do to improve upon what we believe to be a great start for many years to come. I watched in anticipation as we began unloading the bulls for this sale last January. Bulls were being delivered from 7 states and 26 consignors. At the end of the day we had unloaded over 200 quality bulls that we believed were good enough to begin the test. Now almost 300 days later we have 166 bulls of exceptional quality to present to you. My hat goes off to these 26 consignors for providing you with this group of quality bulls. I want to welcome the selling team from American Marketing Services to the Beefmaster Breed along with consultants Justin Rhodes, Keith Cagle and auctioneer Leo Casas. In welcoming American Marketing Services and their team, I would also like to record my thanks for the commitment by the 26 consignors, and particularly the CSBBA Performance Bull Test committee members Sam Dryer, Dave Loftin, and Paul Wallen for their efforts in putting this sale together. I remain thankful to them. Keith Cagle of Rose Bud Feeders has done a tremendous job with these bulls. The bulls are presented ready for work and are bred to perform in the commercial environment. You can be confident that the bulls present well and are deliberately not overcooked. They are fit to do the job and will not melt when you get them home and open the gate. CSBBA looks forward to catching up with you on sale day and, with the AMS team, staying in touch with your breeding progress in the future. Davin Vaughn CSBBA President Beefmaster Enthusiast Preview November 6th Sale Bulls A Cattleman’s Field Day sponsored by Central States Beefmaster Breeders Association (CSBBA) and Arkansas Beefmaster Breeders Association (ABBA) was held in Rosebud, AR on August 15th. The educational portion “Profits from Heterosis” was held in the air conditioned Rosebud School cafeteria. Featured speakers were Bill Pendergrass, BBU Executive Vice President, Dr. Robert Wells from the Noble Foundation and Mark Cowan, American Marketing Services. The amounts of heterosis achieved and the advantages of utilizing that heterosis were analyzed and presented when using Beefmaster genetics The event was well attended with 100 people registered and were heavily weighted towards the commercial cattlemen. Attendees represented 7 states and Australia. Following a hearty lunch, the group went to Rosebud Feeders to look at 173 Beefmaster and Beefmaster Advancer bulls. These bulls have been developed on test at Rosebud since January and are the ones that have passed the rigorous tests and scanning. 203 bulls began the test. Only the best will be allowed to sell November 6th at the Cleburne County Livestock auction in Heber Springs. Page 4 The Bulls the Data Decides Welcome to the Central States Beefmaster Breeders Association Performance Tested Bull Sale. We believe in data collection and in utilizing the information gathered for the improvement of our herds and our breed. We are delighted that 26 of our members and friends have chosen to objectively measure their bulls in a gain test scenario, to collect all the relative performance data available on those bulls and to make that data available to our customers. develop muscle while gaining approximately 2.75 pounds per day on test, then enough feed to keep them growing until the sale. It is paramount that we don’t compromise the animal’s structure by using a high concentrate high starch ration. We believe that by handling the bulls in this manner we are producing a bull that will stay sound and not melt once they are put to work. We are confident they will work for you with only normal yearling bull care and treatment. We believe that today’s beef cattle business, now and in the future will become more and more reliant on objective measurements that will drive data based economic decisions. In this set of bulls you will find all EPD values BBU offers with nothing held back, glossed over or adjusted. We are also making available to you all the, performance data, gain data and ultra sound scans, and more importantly, all the ratios that show you how they compare to bulls similarly treated in their contemporary groups to assist you in making your decisions. We believe in studying ratios and EPDs in our selection decisions and using those values to drive our program forward, especially when bulls are combined from varying weaning contemporary groups, locations and ownership. Both performance measures, ratios and EPDs, provide context when describing an animal. It makes no difference if a bull scans 5% on his IMF or 15 on his REA if all the rest of his contemporaries fed and treated similarly scanned 6% on IMF and 16 on their REA. His ratios and EPDs will help identify the top bulls. After all, isn’t that what the real goal is? These bulls were developed with their longevity in mind. Sure, we could have nailed their feet to the floor and poked feed down them and recorded 1500 pound yearling weights. We know we could because our EPDs say that very few bulls in the breed can match the performance bred into the How good is this set of bulls? If you are looking to add pounds to your calf crop there are 124 bulls out of 166 above breed average for WW EPDs compared to 23,000 sires and over 281,000 individual animal weaning weights in the BBU database. If you are bulls represented in this offering. However, we feel an obligation to our customers to provide well conditioned herd sires for their registered and commercial operations that will not melt when they are turned out and won’t break down in their joints because of the stress of getting too fat just to satisfy an adjusted yearling weight and adj REA contest. looking for calving ease bulls to breed to heifers, there are 95 out of 166 bulls with below breed average BW EPDs. There are 85 bulls above breed average for YW EPDs, 76 for TM and SC EPDs. All bulls have complete ultrasound data, even though carcass EPDs were calculated on only 62 head, 41 bulls are above average for REA and 29 for IMF. It is important to us that our bulls are developed to optimize their breeding performance. January 1st all bulls arrived at Rosebud feeders, the bull development facility of the Central States Beefmaster Breeders Association. Keith Cagle is the owner and operator of this facility and has developed thousands of bulls over the past several years. When the bulls arrive they are broken into groups by size and age. The pastures are 20 to 40 acres in size and they are designed to optimize animal health through exercise, and to develop a sound set of feet and legs. They are fed a low energy forage based ration that is designed to grow the bull’s structure and In terms of the quality of bulls, useful data and pounds heavy performance values, this may be the best set of bulls sold in the Beefmaster Breed this fall. We invite you to join us November 6th in Heber Springs Arkansas at the Cleburne County livestock Auction Inc. Get to know us all and most importantly, get to know our bulls. Come early on the 5th, look through the sale offering and join us for chili that evening. We look forward to seeing you there! Page 5 Reading the Catalog Data...
