Happy Hall-O-Ween. So hard to believe it is October. Cooler weather is upon us.
For me, I wish it was spring.
We had a great time at the Pasta Sauce Cook Off in September. Thanks to
Joanne Collins, our judges were Whitney Vickers from Fairborn Daily Herald, Chief
Mike Riley of Fairborn Fire Department, Police Chief Terry Barlow, and Kate
Bartley of WHIO. The competition was meatless sauce, meat sauce and Alfredo.
The winners were Meat sauce-Tina Fidler, Meatless-was
your own Ellen, and Alfredo-was our John. We had so
much fun. Thanks to all that entered the contest. Sophia
Neuhart and I manned our corner to cheer on the
runners. We had a food both at the Downtown Fairborn
Car Show. Thanks to all who supported us. Leroy and
David did a great job grilling.
Stop by the Center on October 7th for our Health and
Informational Fair. The vendors will be here from 9 am to
5 pm. Flu Shots will be available from 9 am to Noon.
October 17th brings the Rotary’s Annual Spaghetti
Dinner at Giovanni’s from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Tickets are available at the Center
with a cost of $10.00.
October 15th brings LeRoy’s Baby Back Rib Fest with our Baked Goods Auction.
Tickets are $12.00 and will be on sale until October 12th. There will be no tickets
sold at the door. Menu consists of Baby Back Ribs, au gratin potatoes, green
beans and cornbread. If you would like to donate baked good items, please let me
know. Our Auction will start at 7:00 pm.
Please stop and see us at the Hall-O-Ween Festival Downtown Fairborn October
21st from 4 pm to 10 pm and October 22nd 1 pm to 10 pm. If you would like to help
me with the booth, please let me know.
Up coming events for November: Quarter Raffle November 11th doors open at
6:00 pm and fun begins at 7:00 pm; Lion’s Pancake Breakfast November 12th from
9 am to 11:30 am; Christmas Project sign ups November 10th & 16th from 1 pm to 6
pm; Fall Bazaar November 4th from 9 am to 5 pm with lunch being served from 11
am to 2 pm; November 17th Membership Thanksgiving Luncheon.

CARE COORDINATION
The OSHIIP-certified Care Coordination staff can guide you through the complicated Medicare process. Before
you turn 65 or change an existing Medicare plan, make an appointment to discuss your options. The staff also
directs clients to sources for house and yard work, transportation, personal care, shopping, meals, and home
health care. In addition, they provide crisis intervention for eviction, food, utility shut-off, and family issues. You
might be surprised how they can help you. Reach Care Coordination at: 878-4141, extension 215. We are in
need of volunteers! We have updated Senior Housing list and Handyman list.
Time has arrived for MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT which begins October 15th
through December 7th. Now is the time to look at your current Medicare Advantage Plan or Prescription Drug Plan. If you have just Original Medicare or Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement without a Prescription Drug Plan. This is
not open enrollment for the Medicare Supplements. The Care Coordination staff
is certified each year to assist you with doing a comparison of up to three plans
at a time. We cannot tell you which one to pick because this is your decision.
However, we can point out pros and cons of a decision based upon what you tell
us your needs are. Basically you need to look at cost, coverage and convenience for you. This is not a couples decision because it is based on your health,
your needs and what medications you as an individual are taking currently. This is
why we ask certain questions of you and we always ask you bring a detailed list
of your medications such as your pharmacy can supply or your doctor’s office
might supply. You can also bring in the actual medication bottles or containers
which have the dosage and how many pills or puffs you are supposed to take
each day. There has to be an appointment set up for this and you need to plan
on being here thirty minutes up to an hour and a half. Sometimes there are questions to ask of the pharmacy, doctor’s office or the plan itself. This not something
that can be done in fifteen minutes if you want to be properly served. Last but
not least, we are able to steer you toward help in paying for some of these costs if
your income is low and there are two different ways of doing that. This is the reason we ask income and asset questions and it could really pay off for you in the
long run. We take pride in helping our people on Medicare and genuinely want
to help you find the best plan available for you. You may call for Nina, Karen or
Connie to get an appointment set up. 878-4141.
OCTOBER 2016
Page 11
Is it also time for the 2016-2017 HEAP to begin in October as well. The HEAP is
a program for lower income households to apply for a credit for their Winter
heating costs whether that would be natural gas, fuel oil, propane or even
wood or coal. This credit can be applied to whatever is your main heating
source for the cold days of Winter. Income eligibility for a one person household begins with the 175% of the poverty level which is $20,790, for a two person household is $28,035 and so on. You will need an appointment for this if
you need assistance. You will need the following documents to be copied
and sent along with your application: Your photo ID; a list of all household
members along with their dates of birth, and social security numbers; Proof of
income for everyone in the household for everyone over the age of 18 for at
least he last 90 days, but the last twelve months is preferred.; your most recent utility bills for heating and electricity, not water or trash, proof of citizenship or legal residency of all household members. Once this is filled out and
copies made of the requested documents you will need to sign it and send it
in the mail. Periodically we can check the website for Ohio Department Services Agency to see the status of your applications and when your credit
may be sent to the heating provider.
HEAP and PIPP are two different programs. Fairborn Senior Center (878-4141)
is contracted with the Area Agency on Aging to assist with that application
however we are not allowed to certify people for Pipp. Pipp applications
have to done at the Community Action Partnership in Xenia, Oh. And you
have to call there to set up an appointment for that. Their number is 937-3767747 or 427-3377. A question came up just today about being able to have
HEAP and PIPP at the same time and the answer is: Yes, absolutely.

TRANSPORTATION
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
With the arrival of October, when you call and book your ride, you will start to hear us give
that familiar warning “Weather Permitting” that is near and dear to all of our hearts. Why so
soon you may ask? Well the reason is very simple; the term doesn’t just pertain to ice and
snow. FOG can be a real NO GO situation. We will try our best to take you at your scheduled
times, but SAFETY is a main concern. We may have to cancel some or all transportation on
any given day. If we are going to have to cancel any transportation, we will try to notify those
effected clients as soon as we can. You may also listen to the radio WHIO – 1290AM/95.7FM,
check the local TV Channel 7 and/or their Internet sites for closing and cancellation
announcements. The Fairborn Senior Center telephone greeting may also have the
information, so just call the Fairborn Senior Center at 878-4141. Finally, remember that just
because the Fairborn Schools are on delay or canceled, doesn’t mean we are delayed or
canceled, they have to start their routes much earlier than we do.
Whenever the Winter weather gets really bad and you know that your walk or driveway/parking
lot has not been cleared of ICE and/or SNOW, PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE at 878-4141 Ext
216 and CANCEL YOUR RIDE. If you do not cancel and our driver arrives to pick you up and
he or she sees and thinks that you DO NOT have a cleared and safe way from your residence
to our vehicle, he or she will notify you and the Transportation Services office about the
situation and your trip that day will be canceled.
As an additional reminder to all of our Transportation Services clients: Fall is here and Winter
isn’t far behind. Which means sidewalks, driveways, etc., start to get slick. Therefore, all of us
must think about our own and the Transportation Services driver’s SAFETY. This means that
all clients MUST keep the sidewalks, driveways, etc., from your residences to and from the
vehicles, CLEAR of wet or dry leaves, sticks, SNOW and ICE, so that nobody slips and falls and
possibly breaks something important like their arms, legs, hips or head. THANKS for your
cooperation in making sure these obstacles to safety are removed!

Girl in Translation by Jean
Kwok. When Kimberly Chang and
her mother emigrate from Hong
Kong to Brooklyn, Kimberly begins a
secret double life: exceptional
schoolgirl during the day, Chinatown
sweatshop worker at night.
Disguising the difficult truths of her
life--like the extent of her poverty,
the degree to which her family's
future rests on her, or her secret
love for a factory boy who shares
none of her talent or ambition-Kimberly learns to constantly
translate not just her language but
herself between the worlds she
straddles. Kimberly's story is that of
countless immigrants caught
between the pressure to succeed in
America, duty to family, and
personal desires.
