From the Bima
As December begins, so does our celebration of the Festival of
Hanukah, or as we like to say, ―It’s early this year.‖ There are some
who like it when Hanukah comes out at a time separate from the
standard American ―Holiday Season,‖ while for others it makes
December even more difficult. So what difference does it make?
For some, they relish the opportunity to see Hanukah as completely
separate from Christmas. They like the fact that Hanukah has its
own separate time so that they can focus on it as the Jewish holiday
of religious freedom, which is what Hanukah is all about. While
others find themselves even more uncomfortable during the remainder of December as the
rest of the world continues to wish us a ―Happy Hanukah‖ simply because it is still the
Christmas season, blithely unaware that Hanukah is long over.
How one feels about Hanukah and this season is really more about us than about them.
Most non-Jews are simply trying to spread holiday cheer and to be sensitive to the fact
that there are non-Jews living among them, but many are not conscious or informed as to
the timing and the differences between Christmas and Hanukah. In a year like this one,
what we want to do is to avoid being offended by the innocent ignorance of others and
reacting with hostility. Which still leaves us the choice between simply accepting their
comments and ―good cheer‖ or using it as an opportunity for education and communitybuilding, depending on the circumstances.

President’s Message
Next time you are in the sanctuary, look at the colors, the ark,
the eternal light, the curtain or the Holocaust Ark; remember
the detailed thought that went into making this a sacred place
for us to worship. I hope you find peace in the sancturary.
With gratitude,
Sheryl Sarin

Did you know…?
I happened to be looking through our
website, and I came across the
explanation and story of how our
sanctuary was designed. I was fascinated to learn that
everything put into the sanctuary was thought out and
significant to the artist, Jeffrey Packard.
I would like to share some of the important reasons our
sanctuary is so beautiful.
The color pallet was chosen because Jeffrey Packard had just
returned from Israel and his vision was to design the
sanctuary with the feel of Jerusalem at sunset. The purpose
was to feel calm and that is also why he decided to leave the
left wall blank.
The Ark: The copper doors on the Ark were hammered
against a walnut nut tree to simulate the texture and feeling of
bark. The bark is representing the Tree of Life. On the
curtain, there is a pillar of smoke and a pillar of fire. The
design shows how one pillar never left the Jewish people in
its guardianship until the second pillar arrived. There are also
two words on the curtain: Zachor, which means ―to
remember,‖ referring to Shabbat and Shamor, which means
―to guard‖ Shabbat.
The Eternal Light was the most fascinating story to me. It
took the artist six weeks to install the light. Why? Because
every time a flame was put up, Mr. Packard would take down
the scaffolding to make sure each flame went in the right
direction. That is dedication. The letters under the Eternal
light are solid copper and mean: ―Know Before Whom You
Stand.‖
The Holocaust Ark is made up of six torched bars of steel to
represent the six million that died in the Holocaust. There is
so much more to the story. Mr. Packard explains that as he
was hanging the Ark he felt the presence of God.
Read all about the story of hanging the Holocaust Ark, the
stained glass windows and the mortar on the bricks
surrounding the Ark, in addition to the details of the above
stories. This information is available on the synagogue
website that Andy Simon and Lior Gotian worked so hard to
redesign. There is so much information - take a few minutes
and go to shomreitorahwcc.org. You will be surprised how
much you can learn about our synagogue.

We need your help...
...to make a Minyan on Wednesday mornings.
The last few weeks we have not had enough people
and, as a result, those congregants who are
mourning a loved one were unable to say Kaddish
on those days. So, if you can, please support your
fellow congregants by helping to make a minyan on
Wednesdays at 7:00 am. Even if you can only
come once or twice, it would be very helpful and
much appreciated. If we all pitch in as a
community, we can make it happen.

Lior Gotian
Shomrei Torah recognizes that we would not be where we
are today if it wasn't for the commitment and love of our
volunteers. Volunteers donate their time and energy to
help our Congregation grow in many ways.
December’s Volunteer of the Month, Lior Gotian, has
dedicated months of his time, starting in April, working
diligently to create our new website from the ground up.
Our website now features an active calendar of events and
provides easy access to information.
Immigrating to the United States as a young boy from
northern Israel, Lior grew up in Queens, New York.
During his high school days, Lior met his wife Tammy.
Being a family man, he enjoys spending time with his two
children who both attend our Hebrew School. Playing
board games, camping trips, hiking and other outdoor
activities are special family pastimes. In his free time,
Lior enjoys challenging himself by learning new things.
Having a great interest in technology, Lior graduated with
a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Stony
Brook University. Throughout Lior’s career, he has
worked on numerous interesting projects, including
power systems for railroads, cell phone technologies and
even the mission computer of a Space Shuttle. Lior
admits that the ―Shomrei Torah website is by far the most
challenging.‖

On November 7th the religious school teachers and I
attended, as we do every year, a conference on
Jewish education sponsored by the UJA
Federation of Northern New Jersey. We all
attended different workshops, ranging from
prayer to prophets. The idea is, of course, to come
away with some new ideas for teaching. In my
workshop, a very good one I might add, in which
the topic was The Prophets-Facilitating
Engagement with the Text, we began to discuss
the relationship between the prophets and Tikun
Olam—repairing the world. It is believed that
individual actions can affect the fate of the world
as a whole.
On a more personal level, if those individual actions are
from people such as Andy Simon-Man Of The
Year and Justin Ort Youth Of The Year, the
world is in great shape!
The Men’s Club, in my opinion, could not have chosen
better candidates. As I am writing this article,
Andy Simon is next door in the main office
building a computer desk for Donna and
rearranging the front office so that it is more
appealing and efficient. Before that, he was
helping me put our new report cards on PDF files
so it would be easier for the teachers and me to
work on the report cards. He is always available
to the religious school and always willing to help.
Justin Ort, the Men’s Club Youth Of The Year, works
tirelessly for the Religious School by
volunteering every Sunday from 9:30-12:30.He
works with the students but also works with me in
the office. He was recognized in the Jewish
Standard, where a list of his many other attributes

Kadima News
Shomrei Torah has been selected to host the Regional
Kadima 8th grade Shabbaton this year. March 11 – 13th,
8th graders from all over NJ will be coming to Wayne to
spend the weekend at Shomrei Torah. The 8th graders
and staff will spend Shabbat together and with our
community, participating in services, eating together,
creating bonds and beginning their transition
into USY. I hope 8th graders from Shomrei Torah will
join us for this terrific weekend. They will have the
opportunity to meet friends and create connections that
will last well into their high school years.
Members of Shomrei Torah have the opportunity to host
8th graders and staff members for the weekend. All meals
are served at the synagogue, and the Kadimaniks spend all
of Shabbat at the synagogue as well. So there isn’t a lot
to do as host families and the benefits are great, as you
have a chance to meet some terrific kids and get a first
hand look at regional Kadima and USY events.
If you are interested in hosting or want more information
please contact me ([email protected]) or fill out the form
below and return it to the synagogue office.
I would like to host 8th graders for the Kadima 8th grade
Shabbaton, March 11–13, 2011.

Our Bat Mitzvah of the month
Centers in New Jersey and the homes of some very special
people, like one of my Aunt Hillary’s best friends, who are
fighting cancer now and will soon be Survivors.
I want to thank Rabbi Mark for all his support and care and
my tutor Danny Fishbane for all his hard work with me –
for making me laugh and believe in myself! I hope that you
can join my family and me on Friday night, December 3rd,
the only Shabbat of Hanukkah and Saturday afternoon for
my Mincha/Havdallah service!
Dear Congregants of Shomrei Torah,
Bari
Hi, my name is Bari and I am in the 7th grade at Anthony
Wayne Middle School. I have lived in Wayne my whole
life and Rabbi Mark named me in the Synagogue at
Shomrei Torah when I was just 3 months old. Now, I will
become a Bat Mitzvah in the same Synagogue on
December 4, 2010. If you know me, you know that I like to
play basketball and lacrosse, dance and spend time with my
friends and family. I love family/friend dinners at our
house and fun trips away.
My Torah portion is Vayigash. This is what is referred to
as ―the happy ending of Jacob’s life.‖ After years of
separation, Jacob’s son Joseph reveals himself to his
brothers and reunites his entire family in safety in the land
of Egypt. Jacob is now very old and tired and once he sees
Joseph he states, ―Now I can die, having seen for myself
that you are alive.‖
For my Mitzvah project I did both Tzadacha and Mitzvot.
I created bracelets that read ―Think Pink 2010‖ and sold
them to raise money for the Hadassah/Susan G. Komen
Race for the Cure that took place in Jerusalem for the first
time beginning on October 28th (one day before my actual
birthday). The Israel Race for the Cure invited ―thousands
of people of all faiths and nationalities to join the race to
end breast cancer forever in Israel and around the world.‖
My Mitzvah project is in honor of my Grandma Flo who
survived breast cancer twice, the second time just this
spring. She is a very strong women and so being able to
teach people about Breast Cancer (especially kids my age)
and supporting Hadassah (an organization full of strong
women) that I am a Life Member of, was amazing. I am
also making pink glass bottles to fill with Purell for Breast

Once again the Ha'Kesher Hebrew High School of Shomrei
Torah and USY will be involved in ―The Midnight Run‖
with Bridges Outreach, bringing food, toiletries and warm
clothing to the homeless in NYC. The students prepare
and package bagged lunches at the end of Shabbat, have
Havdallah service, pack up cars with all of the supplies and
travel into Manhattan. The teens return back to Shomrei
Torah around midnight.
We are asking the congregation for any donations of:
travel-sized toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, body
lotion/cream, shampoo, soap, disposable razors, old towels
will be cut into washcloths.); men's large and extra large
jeans, long sleeved shirts, coats, hats, gloves, sweaters,
sneakers, new socks and underwear; backpacks; sandwich,
gallon and quart-sized zip lock baggies, brown lunch bags,
juice boxes and snacks. As we get closer to the date, we
will let you know what we need in fresh food. All cash
donations may be given to Karen Weiss or Kathy.
THIS YEAR WE WILL NEED AT LEAST 5

BLOOD DRIVE AT SHOMREI TORAH
Men’s Club sponsored its first Sushi & Sake in the Sukkah
on September 29th, where more than 60 congregants
enjoyed kosher sushi and a variety of sake, followed by
Mariv in the sanctuary. Borrowing a line from ―Jaws,‖ the
success of the event inspired more than one person to
comment, ―You’re gonna need a bigger Sukkah.‖
The Men's Club of Shomrei Torah, the Wayne
Conservative Congregation, will run its semi-annual
Blood Drive on Tuesday, December 21st from 3:30 to
9:00 PM at Shomrei Torah, 30 Hinchman Avenue, Wayne,
New Jersey. Co-Chairmen of the Drive, which is being
coordinated through New Jersey Blood Services, are
Steven Cooper and Michael Greenblatt. All are encouraged
to participate.
The Men’s Club held its annual Jets Tailgate on October
17th. Not only did Jeff provide the usual delicious
barbeque (while Scott took in the rays of the summer-like
weather), but for the first time in the history of Shomrei
Torah Jets tailgates, the Jets actually won, defeating the
Broncos in Denver, 24-20.
Donors should be between 17 and 75 years old, in good
health and weigh over 110 pounds. All those who donate
get a mini-physical as part of the screening and a snack
afterwards. All blood types are needed. The giving of
blood is a quick, painless procedure that is truly a good
deed. For those willing to spend a little extra time at the

blood that is collected is put to many valuable uses,

The Men’s Club is co-sponsoring a special Chanukah
presentation of The Town That Fought Hate on Sunday,
December 5th at 10:30 am. Join our Religious School
students and parents for this powerful and memorable
show, followed by the lighting of the 4th candle. Latkes &
apple sauce and other treats will be served. The event is
free to all. Please RSVP to [email protected].
On Tuesday, December 21st, we will hold our Winter
Blood Drive from 3:30 – 9:00 PM. Blood supplies are
typically low this time of year and the need is greater. If
you’ve done this great mitzvah in the past, we look forward
to seeing you again. If it’s something you’ve always
wanted to do, what better place to give than at your shul?
The next Men’s Club meeting is scheduled for Sunday,
January 9th at 10:00am. Men’s Club meetings are open to
men interested in becoming more involved with Men’s
Club events and supporting and improving Shomrei Torah.

Hip, Stylish, Chic, Trendy, Fun and Fabulous! These are just a few words to
describe Sisterhood’s Fashion Show. Thank you to Phyllis Staloff and Sue Berk for
all their efforts in making this evening such a success! We want to thank Phyllis for
her continued support of Sisterhood and Sue for jumping in as a new Sisterhood
member. It was a wonderful evening with over 70 women enjoying the up-to-theminute fashions from Déjà Vu of Pompton Plains, presented by Shomrei Torah’s very
own Sisterhood members. Thank you to Jackie Helfand, Marlene Klein, Laurie
Nahum, SuBonnie Kochman, Janet Simon, Rose Margolis, and Linda Gutman for
modeling. The women began the evening a little timid about their modeling gig, but
ended up having lots of fun and looking very glamorous. Thank you to committee members Elyce Berenzweig, Carol
Fertig, Rhoda Fishler, and Michele Cirkus for helping with this event. It was so nice to see the social hall filled with
so many women - thank you to all for participating in this exciting evening! We could not have done it with out you!
We welcome you to join us on Sunday morning, December 19th (10:30) in the Social Hall as we continue to plan
upcoming events. December 25th is the Sisterhood Mitzvah lunch. If you are interested in serving lunch and visiting
with the residents of the Emeritius Nursing home, contact Karen Weiss. Also in December, Renee Lesser will be
selling Scrip in the Synagogue lobby on the following Sundays: 12/5, 12/12, 12/19. Don't forget to stop at the Gift
Shop for your Chanukah shopping!
That brings us to 2011 (it's hard to believe!). The morning of January 22nd is our Sisterhood Shabbat. If you would like
to participate in the Sisterhood Shabbat service contact Jackie Helfand. There are Hebrew parts, English parts and even
non-speaking parts. It is a very special service and we encourage you to be part of it.
In the evening of January 22nd Sisterhood will be having a Progressive Dinner. If you were at the Progressive Dinner
last year, you know how much fun it was, and if you were unable to attend last year, please join us this year. The
evening will start off with everyone together having cocktails and appetizers. We then split up into smaller groups and
go to someone’s house for the main meal. We will end the evening together again for coffee and dessert!. Please
contact Sue Gordon if you are interested in either hosting dinner and/or participating in coordinating the event. Details
of the evening will follow shortly.
As you can see, Sisterhood has many upcoming events and opportunities for all to participate. We welcome you to be
part of Sisterhood and hope to see each of you soon!
Wishing you and your families a Happy Chanukah !

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH STRATEGIC PLANNING?
Strategic Planning co-chairs, Andy Lieb and Steve Cooper, announced that as part of its Year 3 SLI
Strategic Planning Initiative, Shomrei Torah will have the opportunity to apply to The Henry &
Marilyn Taub Foundation for a one-time matching grant of up to $10,000 in order to enable us to
implement a new initiative resulting from our Strategic Plan. The Year 3 Team, in conjunction with
the synagogue's Board of Trustees, has the responsibility for determining the project/program and the
Team has to complete the Application. By the terms of the grant, the project/program has to be
something that would be considered ―life-changing‖ for the Congregation that is not something like
repairing the roof , new lighting, or redecorating the social hall or included in the normal
congregational budget, such as hiring a cantor, lowering the debt, etc. Synagogues that do not apply
for the grant before the end of their Year 3 of Strategic Planning lose the ability to ever apply.
The Team will begin brainstorming ideas. You can help by emailing any ideas you have to Andy at
[email protected] or Steve at [email protected].
