A Complete History
New title
www.crecy.co.uk
Born of an idea suggested by the Japanese Navy to arm Germany’s elegant Fw 200 Condor airliner for a maritime reconnaissance role, the Luftwaffe’s long range Condor proved it’s worth in the first years of World
War II.
A practical anti-shipping raider, the Condor fought a virtually private war
against surface vessels in line with the policy of imposing a blockade to
strangle Britain’s seaborne lifeline. Rapidly neutralised by allied escort
carriers and merchant ships the Condor’s role switched to staving off the
Sixth Army’s defeat at Stalingrad. Condor crews hauled supplies in appalling winter conditions – sub-zero temperatures and low visibility and
routinely serviced and refulled aircraft under the guns of the Red Air
Force.
For the Germans, maritime patrol duty grew ever more costly in terms of
men and machines and new ‘stand-off’weapons were introduced to beat
the defences. By 1944 the Fw 200 had been all but eclipsed in a combat
role and the survivors reverted to the transport role for which they were
originally designed.

de Havilland Mosquito
An Illustrated History Volumes 1 and 2
Stuart Howe and Ian Thirsk
Both volumes of de Havilland Mosquito An Illustrated History trace the fascinating development of the Mosquito from its construction through to operational fighter and bomber. Human stories of RAF aircrew, ground crew
and Commonwealth Air Forces are also detailed.
Volume 1 follows the history of the Mosquito from its first flight in November 1940 through to its production and many variants. The aircraft’s varied
post war uses are outlined in roles ranging from oil prospecting and air racing to aerial survey.
Volume 2 covers the Mosquito factory and the people who worked with and
flew in her together with many of the Mosquito variants including fighter,
bombers, sea Mosquitoes, target tugs and that operated by the Russians.
Extended captions in both volumes include aircraft numbers, specifications,
dates, personalities, and background information coupled with over 1,000
black and white photographs which make the set a must for researchers
and historians alike.

The Hawker Hunter
Tim McLelland
Tim McLelland’s Hawker Hunter is both a comprehensive work of reference and an authoritative history. It covers the origins of the aircraft
from both the P1040 and P1052 swept wing
versions and moves through design and development of the twin-seat dual-control Hunter
T7 to the ‘ultimate’ FGA.Mk.9. The Hunters varied operational successes are noted with particular emphasis on major foreign users in
Switzerland and India, and, amongst others,
exports to Oman and Chile.
It faithfully reproduces the Hunter’s original
Aircrew Manual and presents appendices on
service histories, serial numbers and the fate
of every Hunter built. Colour profiles and a set
of scale plans ensure the complete history of
the aircraft is presented in a single volume and
provides essential reading for the aviation enthusiast or historian.

The Avro Vulcan
Tim McLelland
The story of the Avro Vulcan is as
dramatic as the presence of the aircraft itself. Designed by a team led
by Roy Chadwick, the man responsible for the Lancaster, the Vulcan was
one of the three bombers developed
to carry Britain’s nuclear deterrent in
the 1950s and 1960’and wrote a
spectacular epilogue to its operational torch when, in 1982, the aircraft was pressed back into the
frontline to undertake the longest
bombing raid flown – to the Falklands.
Tim McLelland’s Avro Vulcan is both
a comprehensive work of reference
and an authoritative history. It covers
the origins of the Vulcan and deltawinged flight and provides details of
every major production variant and
also describes the aircraft’s use as a
test-bed for a variety of missile, engine and equipment technologies. It
faithfully reproduces sections of the
Vulcan’s original Aircrew Manual and
presents appendices on both
squadron deployment and the fate of
every Vulcan built with colour profiles
and scale plans.

Stormbird
Hermann Buchner
One of the Luftwaffe’s highest scoring Me262 aces
Bomber pilots who become fighter pilots are rare, Hermann Buchner was one.
The author, a Luftwaffe NCO pilot and Knight’s Cross holder gives a riveting account of his training with the pre-war Austrian airforce, instructing with the Luftwaffe then the terrifying ground attack operations on the Eastern Front trying to
stop the Russian mincing machine.
Despite being shot down twice, Buchner himself targeted Il 2s, Yak 9s and
Boston bomber who fell victims to his eagle eye
Later tasked with opposing the Allied daylight bombing raids into deepest Germany, Buchner laboured to protect his homeland. Serving alongside many wellknown aces and sometimes taking off from his home airfield while under Soviet
shellfire, he paints a picture of a man surviving against incredible odds, who became one of the elite with JG7 and learnt that the important thing with the Me262
was to land near a convenient foxhole.
Supplemented by over 140 photographs, mostly from the author’s personal collection together with colour profiles of his aircraft and opponents, Stormbird
presents a remarkable insight into the life of a Luftwaffe pilot in WWII.
• Autobiographical account of a Knights Cross holder
• Austrian born pilot
• Ground attack on Russian Front in WWII
• Over 600 operational missions
• Shot down 60 Russian, RAF+ USAAF aircraft and destroyed
47 armoured vehicles
Crécy Classic

overlooked and forgotten by the bigger publishers. Now Crécy has
collected together many of these legendary works, and published
them in our ‘Crécy Classics’ series. Not every title is well-known to
the general public, but every one has earned the right to be truly regarded as a Crécy Classic.

A Test Pilot’s Story
Jeffrey Quill
Testing the Spitfire
Alex Henshaw
Leader of the
Dambusters
Wing Commander Guy
Gibson VC DSO DFC
This is the story of an exceptional
test pilot and RAF and Fleet Air Arm
fighter pilot, Jeffrey Quill, who took
charge of some of the most important military aircraft of his time.
First published in 1944, Enemy
Coast Ahead combines Gibson’s
RAF career, including the famous
Dambuster raid which he himself led,
with the inside story of life in Bomber
Command. And yet, what has not
been widely known is that the original edition of Enemy Coast Ahead
was carefully cut by wartime censors. Now, Gibson’s original manuscript has been be brought to light.
This uncut edition provides not only
previously unpublished details of
Gibson’s career, but also reveals his
true view of the course of th e war, of
the wartime population, of his pilots
and crews and of Bomber Command
tactics. Combined with newly added
photographs Enemy Coast Ahead –
Uncensored is one of the outstanding accounts of WWII seen through
the eyes of one of its most respected
and controversial personalities.
Starting with lively descriptions of
the Royal Air Force in the mid
1930s, Jeffrey Quill moves on to
cover his fascinating test flying experiences where he took charge of
some of the most important military aircraft of that time. In particular, he flight-tested every variant of
the immortal Spitfire, from its experimental, prototype stage in 1936
when he worked with its chief designer, R J Mitchell, to the end of
its production in 1948. Using his
first-hand experience of combat
conditions
fighting
with
65
Squadron at the height of the Battle
of Britain, Jeffrey Quill helped to
turn this elegant flying machine
into a deadly fighter aeroplane.
The enthralling account of Alex
Henshaw’s life with the Spitfire.
Alex Henshaw spent the early days
of World War II at Eastleigh, England, testing the immortal Spitfire
fighter with Jeffrey Quill before
being appointed Chief Test Pilot at

The Times Literary Supplement
Thousands of Spitfires were
tested and manufactured at this
site throughout the war, by the
end of which 37,000 test flights
had been made with Alex Henshaw flying an estimated ten per
cent of all Spitfires ever built.
Often landing without aids of any

Aviation Historian
Military airfields of the south-west are
the subject of the latest volume of the
new Action Stations Revisited series.
The area covered includes most of the
counties of Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Wiltshire, along with those
of Dorset, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and the Channel Islands.
The whole of British aviation history is
reflected here from the birth of military
aviation at Larkhill, flying training at
Old Sarum during the First World War
and at Upavon during the 1930s, to
fighter operations from Charmy Down
during the Second World War. Postwar developments at Filton and
Boscombe Down are supplemented
by recent activities at Culdrose,
St.Mawgan, Yeovilton and Lyneham.
Accounts of the construction and operational use of the stations, with the
aircraft types flown and units involved
are illustrated by a wealth of photographs, many of them previously unpublished.

The son of a Canadian lawyer, Roderick Ward Maclennan joined the
University of Toronto’s Officer’s Training Corps in 1915. Enlisting in Kingston
he crossed the Atlantic in 1916 with the Medical Service on work which was
‘congenial and necessary’. Commissioned to the Royal Flying Corps, he
trained in Oxford on the BE 2b.
Learning to fly was an adventure and learning the art of reconnaissance
was pure joy.
‘I get in my machine, put on my leather cap and tie a pencil on the
end of a string to my belt. Then I fold my map so that the spot I
have to cover is visible, and then secure my map to my left leg
above the knee with one of my garters. I do the same with my
notebook on my right knee, and after a final polish of my goggles
I am ready…’
Eventually posted to France with 60 Squadron, Maclennan flew the
notorious SE 5.

Training of a
Flying Officer
2nd Lieutenant
R W Maclennan RFC
Maclennan’s beautifully naïve writing
vividly brings to life the spirit of the
times when the world was opening
up to these ‘gentlemen’ pilots, and
reveals another view of the golden
age of aviation and the glorious
language of the times.
Hidden in the archives of his
Canadian University, the writing of
2nd Lieutenant Maclennan, can
finally be revealed.

Warburton’s War
Tony Spooner
Adrian Warburton was one of the
most decorated pilots of World War
II. A below average, Warburton was
sent to Malta to avoid trouble in the
UK. Known at first as a loner, when
given his head, his spectacular
results enabled his unconventional
behaviour to be overlooked.
Becoming CO of 69 Squadron,
then 683 PR Squadron ‘Warby’ was
fearless in the air, shooting down
nine enemy aircraft and winning
fame in Malta for his invaluable
photo-reconnaissance work at
Taranto. Based on interviews with
his colleagues, Warburton’s War,
paints a picture of a fascinating
man who with 350 operational
missions from Malta alone,
became a living legend.

Born in the 1940s, the Soviet Air Force’s long-range bomber arm (known
initially as the ADD and later as the DA) proved itself during the Second
World War and continued to develop in the immediate post-war years,
when the former allies turned Cold War opponents.
Soviet Strategic Aviation In The Cold War follows aircraft development
for almost 50 years until the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991 including initiatives to fit air launched missiles to bombers, the first supersonic aircraft and the 1980’s mighty Tu-160 Blackjack which was capable
of carrying 12 air-launched cruise missiles. Major operations including the
air arm’s involvement in the Afghan War, Cold War exercises over international waters in the vicinity of the ‘potential adversary’ and the shadowing
of NATO warships are covered, as are Arctic operations, nuclear testing,
co-operation with ‘friendly nations’ and air-launched missile systems.
Air Armies, bomber divisions and bomber regiments are detailed, including their aircraft on a type-by-type basis.
Over 500 photos, most of which are previously unpublished in the West,
are supplemented by more than 60 colour profiles, colour badges and
line drawings of the aircraft and their weapons, making this an essential
reference source for all aircraft enthusiasts.
A companion volume is in preparation; this
will continue the story from 1991 and present
a comprehensive overview of Russian Strategic Aviation today.

Derided by Allied propaganda which made it out to be an air force
equipped solely with elderly biplanes, ineffective in attack or always
in retreat, the Regia Aeronautica was overshadowed by its more
ruthless Axis partner, the Luftwaffe.
Using research from a mass of original documentation, including
personal accounts and combat diaries, the author takes an objective
view and shows that the men who flew the Macchis, Fiats and
Savoias were no less skilled or determined than their opponents.
Area commands and theatres are discussed together with squadron
allocations, anti-shipping operations, aircrew and details of the top
fighter aces.
Comprehensive tables provide information on aircraft equipment,
squadron allocation and unit histories. Coupled with drawings from
the original aircraft handbooks, almost 250 photographs and over 100
colour profiles and unit badges, Courage Alone provides a detailed
reference source for historians, modellers and enthusiasts alike.

Luftwaffe pilot Walter Schuck flew the Me109 in the Arctic Sea fighter squadrons
becoming the Russian air force’s feared enemy in the far north. Awarded the
Knights Cross in April 1944 he claimed his 100th kill in June of that year, then
barely 48 hours later shot down 12 aircraft in one day – a record never achieved
by any other Arctic Sea pilot.
His mastery continued when in March 1945 he joined JG 7, newly equipped
with Me262 jet fighters, and shot down two Allied fighters on his first operation,
closely followed by four B-17 bombers in a single mission. Celebrated by his colleagues for his skill, courage, sheer guts and chivalry over 500 sorties including
his deep feelings for those he shot down, he earned the nickname ‘Adler der
Tundra’ or ‘Northern Knight’.
In this autobiography, the author tells his story simply, conveying his impressions of life, the rationale of the Lufwaffe and the everyday life of a military man
in those times, including the difficulties and hardships of the war over the Arctic Seas.
Rich in detail and facts and supplemented by photographs from his personal
collection and colour aircraft profiles, Walter Schuck helps us to put the past
into context, painting a unique picture of life in the Luftwaffe during the times of
the Third Reich.

The Vietnamese Peoples’
Air Force in Combat
1965 – 1975
Roger Boniface
Using rare first-hand accounts and
many new photographs Roger Boniface analyses the Vietnamese Peoples’ Air Force (VPAF) fighter
operations over North Vietnam between 1965-1975.
Frank opinions are voiced on how
the North Vietnamese viewed the
gradual escalation of the aerial conflict over their country, including details of key operations and VPAF
tactics against USAF F-4s and B-52s.
Amongst others, Nguyen Van Coc
(the highest scoring pilot of the Vietnam conflict) relates details of the
Black Friday Massacre, America’s
heaviest aerial defeat. The author reveals much new data, which challenges previous reports such as
three kills claimed by Lt. ‘Duke’ Cunningham, later a US Senator. Comprehensive appendices reveal the
first complete loss list of all VPAF personnel and a victory table with a
break down of all known kills.
16 intricate profiles of rare aircraft including the VPAF Soviet supplied
MiG 15, MiG 17F and Chinese MiG

text to produce a unique insight into

Shrouded in secrecy, output from the
Chinese aviation industry was, until recently, largely unknown in the West.
Now, for the first time, Chinese Aircraft
provides a unique description of
China’s indigenous aircraft from fighters, bombers, special mission and
strike aircraft to trainers, light utility, helicopters, UAV’s, airliners and transports.
The Shaanxi Y8 family of aircraft,
Chengdu FC-1 Xiaolong (JF-17 Thunder) and Shenyang J-10 fighters are
featured as are the Xian JH-7 (FBC-1
Flying Leopard) fighter bomber and
the Changhe Z8 heavy helicopter.
Factories and design institutions representing the industry over the years
are noted including Chengdu,
Guizhou and Changhe together with
their logos, early and late designs.
Aircraft weapons, unmanned aerial vehicles and China’s exports are highlighted together with an abundance of
technical data. Fully indexed China’s
aircraft provides a wealth of information for the historian, enthusiast and
modeler alike.

Much has been written about the Luftwaffe but no aspect has been more
controversial than the question of aircraft camouflage and markings.
In this comprehensive study, the author follows the development and use
of the many colours used and establishes the links between the then standard RAL colours and those adopted
by the German Air Ministry.
Using much original documentation he
reveals how and why these finishes
were developed and applied to both
military and Lufthansa aircraft – in such
detail that anyone with an interest in
the subject, either as an historian,
model-maker or aircraft preservationist – can recreate Luftwaffe colours
with unprecedented accuracy.
New chapters include details of national emblems and markings and
JG54 ‘dark’ camouflage colours. Supplemented by a paint chip chart, over
300 photographs, 40 drawings and 16
pages of detailed colour aircraft profiles, many of which are now presented
in 1:72 scale, Luftwaffe Colours presents a remarkable insight into the art of
WWII German camouflage markings.

East Riding Airfields 1915 -1920
Geoffrey Simmons
Even before the outbreak of the first World War, aviation had made its
presence felt in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with visits from many of the
leading aviation pioneers including Gustav Hamel and Harry Hawker. It
was, however, the outbreak of the war in 1914 and the arrival of the German Zeppelins which led to the establishment of the first official air bases
in the area.
In fact the first ever enemy attacks upon Yorkshire from the German navy
when they bombarded Scarborough and Whitby on 16 December 1914.
On June 6 1915, however, threat became reality when a Zeppelin bombed
Hull, killing 24 people and injuring 40. For the next four years the landing
grounds and marine stations in the East Riding served as bases for British
aircraft and airships which were defending the East Riding towns and
coastal shipping from air and sea attack.
Geoffrey Simmons tells something of the bravery and expertise of the
men who flew the primitive machines of the time, often in appalling
weather at night, from these little known bases.

Wekusta
Luftwaffe Meteorological
Reconnaissance Units & Operations
1938-1945
John A Kington & Franz Selinger
Anticipating a more or less complete failure of the international weather observation network in the event of war,
the German Meteorological Service developed methods
of long-range meteorological reconnaissance by aircraft
from 1937. Beginning with a small civilian unit of pilots and meteorologists, a Luftwaffe-controlled air section, comprising Wettererkundungs Staffeln (Wekusta) was set up on the eve
of World War II. These squadrons and related units contributed in no small way to the
achievements of the German Meteorological Service in all wartime theatres. The mostly unknown or forgotten history of the Wekusta, usually operating over hostile or enemy-controlled regions, is brought to light in this volume.
At the height of the war the Wekustas included around a dozen individual
squadrons, totalling several hundred aircraft and over 1,000 flight crews. Encounters with enemy aircraft were frequent and of an erratic nature, ranging
from generous life-saving efforts to attacks on downed crew members. After
the secret Zenit code of the German aircraft reports was broken by British intelligence, the RAF sometimes let German weather aircraft pass without attack because their radio messages were considered more valuable than
shooting down the reporting aircraft.
Wekusta fills a long-existing gap in
the history of atmospheric science
and military aviation and, above all
makes fascinating reading.

Rise and Defend
The USAF at Manston 1950-1958
Duncan Curtis
Taken over by the United States Air Force in 1950 as a direct result of the developing chill of
the Cold War, the ex-RAF station at Manston in Kent served as a forward air base from which
American aircraft could be rapidly deployed to meet the threat of incoming Soviet bombers.
Manston also served as a base from which USAF forces in Europe could be speedily reinforced and also hosted some of the earliest helicopter-equipped dedicated SAR squadrons
around the British coast.
Despite never firing a shot in anger, the Manston-based units played a major role in the development of operational use and tactics of jet aircraft such as the F-84 Thunderjet, the nuclear-armed Thunderstreak and the F-86 Sabre in their numerous variants. The difficulties and
tribulations attached to these sometimes led to situations of extreme danger for the crews, but
also occasionally of farce. In the end, Manston was closed as a USAF base °X not for military
reasons, but in the interests of noise abatement... The author includes a full list of USAF aircraft based at Manston and provides a fascinating record of men, machines and operations.

Guy Gibson
Leader of the
Dambusters
On September 5th, 1943, Denys Teare
baled out of his burning Lancaster
bomber over Occupied France; and
from this moment on became an
evader in the midst of the enemy. Continually thwarted in his escape attempts, he was a doubly wanted man:
not only a British airman evading the
occupying force, but also an active
member of the French Resistance.
Described as one of the best three
books about life in Bomber Command
during World War Two, Lancaster Target is the classic story of one crew’s fi
ght to fl y and survive a full tour of operations in the night skies of wartime
Europe. Flying Lancaster bombers
from RAF Wickenby in Lincolnshire between 1943 and 1944, Jack Currie
chronicles the life and death struggles
against flak, night fighters and perilous
weather with clarity and feeling, whilst
capturing the ‘live for the moment’
spirit of off duty escapades.
First published in 1944, Guy Gibson’s Enemy Coast Ahead quickly
became regarded as the classic
Bomber Command book, following
Gibson’s RAF career from flying the
Hampden and Manchester at the beginning of WWII to the triumphant return home of the Lancasters from the
famous 1943 Dambuster raid which
Gibson led and for which he was
awarded the Victoria Cross.
Enemy Coast Ahead is also the inside story of life in Bomber Command throughout the first years of
WW2, culminating in breath-holding
drama as the RAF planned, practiced
and strove towards breaching the
dams on that famous night in May
1943.

GMR Talk – Manchester Local Radio
As the global conflicts of the 20th
century move out of living memory, it becomes
more and more difficult to understand the unique experiences of ordinary people trying to fight and survive in extraordinary circumstances.
The everyday hardships, dangers, fears and heroism of these times cannot be conveyed any better than in the words of those who lived through
these times, and best of all these stories are found in the Goodall
‘Witness To War’ series.

early days of the Battle of Britain while
serving with Spitfire squadrons based

compelling story tells of the successes
and frustrations of those critical weeks.

the genre, giving an excellent
firsthand account of Dunkirk and

Pilot Magazine
Accepted as a RAF navigator in 1940,
Don Charlwood was posted to 103
Squadron at Elsham Wolds in the winter of 1942. There he crewed up with a
pilot from Western Australia and a
British crew to fly a Lancaster bomber.
In No Moon Tonight he gives a profound insight into the inner lives of the
men of Bomber Command and their
hopes and fears in the face of mounting losses. He depicts the appalling
human cost of the air war in an account which has been favourably compared to enduring memoirs of the 1st
World War, namely Sassoon’s Memoirs of an Infantry Officer and Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front.
A memorable first hand account of the
air war over Germany.

Hamish Mahaddie
DSO DFC AFC & BAR
A Bomber Command book with a difference, the story of the air war over
Germany as seen from the small Perspex bubble of a ‘Tail-End Charlie’
rear gunner in a Lancaster.
Flying firstly with 626 squadron, and
later 156 Pathfinder squadron, Ron
Smith flew 65 operations and
recorded them with the intensity
brought on by the isolation of being
cocooned in his lonely gun turret.
‘Suddenly we were over the Big
City… after long hours of searching
the night sky from the coast, to be
suddenly propelled into the brilliant
hell over Berlin produced a freezing
of the mind…flak sliced up through
the broken illuminated clouds, ascending gracefully to stream past the
turret. A Lancaster slid across at right
angles with a single fighter just behind it, as if attached by an invisible
thread… the city far below was bubbling and boiling, splashes of fire
opening out as the blockbusters
pierced this terrible brew.’

The Cruise of the Sea Eagle
The story of Imperial Germany’s Gentleman Pirate
Blaine Pardoe
On December 21, 1916, a three-masted sailing ship slipped out of the
river Weser in Northern Germany. Her captain had false papers, a deliberately damaged logbook, and a young sailor with a blonde wig to pose
as his wife. The ship sailed under a false flag and even her name – the
Hero – was a ruse. So begins the amazing true story of The Cruise of the
Sea Eagle, the account of Felix von Luckner, the Imperial German Navy
raider set upon the high seas of WWI to sink Britain’s vital wartime supply ships.
Using sheer determination, pluck and quick wits, von Luckner steered
clear of the British Navy to board and sink as many merchant ships as
possible. Within a month, he had already claimed three vessels. But unlike Germany’s vaunted submarine fleet, the gentleman pirate made room
on his ship for all prisoners and never fired a shot unless it was unavoidable.
Eagles War
Peter C Smith
A gripping and moving
story of a famous aircraft
carrier at war.
HMS Eagle was already old when
war was declared in September 1939
and her Swordfish biplanes were
soon flying escort to vital Australian
troop convoys in the wastes of the Indian Ocean. When the war moved to
the Mediterranean, Eagle’s meagre
air group bolstered by a few Sea
Gladiator biplanes held the ring with
Cunningham’s superb fleet through
the dark days of 1940 to 1941. Her
aircraft took part in the naval victories
of Calabria and Taranto; worked from
desert air strips with great success
and hounded the Italian Navy out of
the Red Sea. Following further ocean
patrols in the South Atlantic, Eagle
joined the famous Force ‘H’ at Gibraltar and did more than any other ship
to sustain Malta during the islands’
greatest ordeal. Before being lost in
action during the greatest of all convoy battles Operation Pedestal, in
August 1942. This almost day-by-day
account of her battles and actions as
seen through the eyes of its former
crew members is a fitting tribute to all
who served aboard her or flew from
her decks.

Task Force 57
The convoy that saved
Malta
Peter C Smith
The British Pacific
Fleet,
1944-45
Peter C Smith
In the summer of 1942 one of the
main issues in the balance was the
fate of Malta. The island was still a
bastion ofthe Royal Navy in the
Mediterranean and a constant
threat to the supplyroute for the
enemy land forces in North Africa.
It bravely resisted every onslaught
of the Axis powers, but food supplies were desperately short and
fuel oil running low. In August of
that year Operation Pedestal was
launched – a last attempt to relieve
Malta. Fourteen merchant ships
were allocated to it and the Royal
Navy provided the most powerful
force ever to escort a convoy including four aircraft carriers. Operating from Sardinia and Sicily, the
Germans and Italians let fly with
their shore-based aircraft on an unprecedented scale. The losses on
the British side were appalling, but
the objective was achieved and the
blockade of Malta was finally lifted.

Formed in 1944 the British Pacific
Fleet was to fight alongside the
Americans and so was given an
American codename – Task Force
57. But the Pacific theatre was unlike anything the British had experienced before. Surface action was
rare and major engagements were
fought at ranges of 200 miles. The
veterans of the Atlantic, Mediterranean and North Sea had to start
again and faced a new deadly
enemy from the air – the
Kamikaze. Although overshadowed in numbers by the vast
American task forces, Task Force
57 made a decisive contribution to
victory in the Far East. A definitive
account of this ‘forgotten fleet’.

If the Gods Are

The story of HMS Jervis
Bay’s final heroic battle
Gerald L Duskin and
Ralph Segman
On 28th October 1940 HMS Jervis
Bay, an ancient cargo ship armed
with a small number of obsolete
guns, set out to escort 37 freighters
and tankers across the North Atlantic.
Unexpectedly discovered by the Admiral Scheer, one of Germany’s most
feared pocket battleships, the Jervis
Bay captain immediately dispersed
convoy HX84 to hide. Outgunned
and with no hope of survival, Captain
Fegen and over 190 of the 256 Jervis
Bay crew sacrificed themselves as
they took the battle to the enemy in a
one-sided duel as they fought to secure the safe passage of the ships in
their charge. This heroic battle is fully
placed in both its contemporary
naval and political contexts and includes graphic descriptions of battle
scenes and action aboard the ships,
together with the harrowing aftermath as men struggled to survive in
the icy seas.

The Apollo 11
Moon Landing
A Photographic
Retrospective
Dennis R Jenkins & Jorge
Frank
20:17:40 UTC, 20 July 1969. Contrary to popular belief, few people
remember the first words actually
spoken from the Moon. The first
words were procedural, ‘Contact
light; Okay, engine stop; ACA – out
of detent,’ etc. Then, in words intended for public consumption,
spoken to a worldwide audience
enthralled with the mission by Neil
Armstrong: ‘Houston, Tranquillity
Base here. The Eagle has landed.’
It was a culmination of a dream
that dated back millennia. Landing
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on
the Moon had cost the lives of
three astronauts in the Apollo 1
(AS-204) fire, as well as something approaching $125 billion (in
2009 dollars) of American treasure. It stands as the landmark
technical achievement in the
6,000-year recorded history of the
human race. This photo scrapbook shows images — some famous, others unknown — that
chronicle the epic journey of Buzz
Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and
Michael Collins aboard Apollo 11,

The compelling story of America's aerospace industry in its
heyday, when manufacturers
boldly took the initiative to explore futuristic new designs by
actually building and test flying
airplanes to determine how well
they would work, if at all. Convair led the way in this area with
America's only complete family
of delta-wing aircraft that included America's first delta-wing
jet, the one-of-a-kind XF-92 experimental prototype, the XF2Y-1 jet-powered seaplane, the XFY-1 Pogo turboprop vertical takeoff and landing fighter, the F-102 Delta Dagger and F-106 Delta
Dart supersonic missile-firing interceptors, and the revolutionary record-breaking four-engine B-58 Hustler – the world's first Mach 2 strategic bomber.
Noted aviation author Bill Yenne thoroughly documents Convair's quest to conquer the aerodynamic mysteries of the delta wing with stories of the dramatic
struggles and technological breakthroughs that gave the world some of its
greatest fighter and bomber aircraft.

Gunships
The Story of Spooky,
Shadow, Stinger and
Spectre
Wayne Mutza
The dramatic story of transforming military cargo transports into
deadly ground-attack aircraft
used by the U.S. and other
countries in worldwide conflicts
from the Vietnam War to the
Middle East today. Beginning
with piston-powered, WWII-era
C-47s the book progresses to
the four-engine turboprop C-130
Hercules, showing how gunships evolved from using 20mm mini guns to 105mm Howitzers with digital-age
Battle Management Centers housed onboard. These highly effective airplanes
made history by removing the safe haven of night operations from the enemy.
Author Wayne Mutza not only carefully researched all these aircraft and their
paths to reality, but also tells the tale of the brave and persevering men who believed in this unique weapon system and who saw its development through to
the end. This book features detailed appendices documenting gunship production data, combat units, and aircraft losses and a wealth of outstanding
colour photographs, many of which have never before been published.

Navy flight crews who battled the Sovietbuilt enemy MiGs in the war-torn skies
over Southeast Asia.
A vivid and detailed narrative describes all
202 MiG kills made by six different aircraft
types, with every engagement arranged in
chronological order.
This book also features the most complete
photo documentation on this subject ever
assembled. By using outstanding original,

has never before been published, this book shows 169 of the 174 U.S. aircraft
credited with MiG kills during the Vietnam War. It describes each aircraft with
serial number, tail code, operational unit, crewmember names, call sign, and
specific weaponry and tactics used in accomplishing each and every MiG kill
made from April 1965 through January 1973. Ideal for historians and modelers
alike.

Dan Hagedorn
NORTH AMERICAN'S T-6: A Definitive History of the World's
Most Famous Trainer is the book
the world's extensive T-6 community has been waiting years to
have. Author Dan Hagedorn, curator for the Museum of Flight in
Seattle, Washington, combines
his professional documentation skills with rare access to valuable North American archival material to write the definitive book about one of the world's most
beloved World War II aircraft.
The T-6 served as an advanced trainer for military pilots from more than 80 different nations around the world for several decades. In addition to highly detailed documentation of every T-6 variant used by both the U.S. Army Air Corps
and U.S. Navy, literally all foreign T-6s manufactured in America or exported
overseas are listed by individual country as well. Of the nearly 16,000 T-6s built,
hundreds still fly today as prized, restored collectibles or air show performers,
giving this book a large potential readership.

Hornet since 1948
Tommy H. Thomason
A celebration of carrier-based airto-ground attack aircraft which
first came into operation during
the Korean War, reached maturity
during Vietnam, and are deployed
today throughout the world. Wellknown author and naval aviation
authority Tommy Thomason not
only explores such legendary
Navy aircraft as the A4D Skyhawk,
A3J Vigilante, and A-6 Intruder, but
also the critical role of the aircraft
carrier itself, for without these
massive nuclear powered floating
airfields, U.S. Navy attack aircraft
would have no sea-borne bases
from which to operate.
Armament from gravity bombs to
today's
GPS-guided
“smart
weapons” are covered in great detail and this book also explains
that while many different types of
airplanes were required for flying
attack missions in the past, only
one aircraft - the advanced F/A18E/F Super Hornet - is needed to
carry out these same missions in
an even more complex and hostile
combat environment today.

Jet Fighters
Dennis Jenkins & Tony Landis
The United States was late in developing a jet
fighter. Nevertheless a small number of Lockheed P-80 Shooting Stars did make it to the
European theatre before VE day. After the war
the sheer size of the US aviation industry
guaranteed that American fighters would
soon dominate the skies. In the United States
alone several dozen different fighter designs
made it to the prototype stage during the
1950s and 1960s.
The U.S. Air Force began
developing jet fighters as
World War II came to a

soon developed saw a

the post-war jets developed by the
U.S. Air Force were soon breaking the sound barrier, flying to

U.S. Air Force Prototype Jet Fighters details the evolution of these
aircraft, using dozens of never-before-published photographs from
government archives.

A Technical and Operational History
of the Liberty Engine
Tanks, Ships and Aircraft 1917-1960
Robert J. Neal
The aim of the Liberty was to
standardize aircraft engine design. The theory was to have an
engine design that could be
built in several sizes and thus
power airplanes for any purpose, from training to bombing.
The differences in sizes would
be obtained by using different
numbers of cylinders in the
same design. A large number of
other parts would also be used
in common by all resulting sizes
of the engine series. The initial
concept called for four-, six-,
eight-, and 12-cylinder models.
The authors look at a variety of different jetfighter concepts that made it to the hardware
stage. The rationale for developing each aircraft is covered along with a discussion of
the technology needed to build it, its flighttest program and the reasons it was cancelled or put into production. Derived from
official Air Force documents all aircraft are
covered photographically with seldom seen
images.

The engine design eventually saw use on land, sea, and in the air,
and its active military career spanned the years 1917 to 1960. In
addition, it provided noble service in a multitude of civilian uses.

U.S. Experimental &
Prototype Aircraft
Projects Fighters
1939-1945
William Norton
America's military aircraft industry was
forced to grow at an incredible pace during
World War II. At the beginning of the conflict,
the nation's air arms were out-matched by
better-performing Axis aircraft. It was the development, often in secret, and subsequent
performance of America's fighter aircraft that
helped turn the tide of the war.
This book focuses on those American fighter
projects of WWII that never reached combat
forces, or only in a very limited manner. It illuminates little known or minimally documented aircraft and projects that significantly
advanced fighter design but never went into
full-rate production and deployment. ‘Standard’ types are also examined to illustrate the
state of the art at the time, the American posture and capabilities, goals set by national
and military leadership, and general factors
affecting the course of development for
classes of fighters. Also included are ‘deadend’ variants of service types, those only exported after US evaluation, and aircraft that
entered service in only small numbers before
being overcome by more advanced models
or the end of hostilities.

A Pilot’s Guide
John Swan
AFE Pilot’s Guides are the standard reference for any pilot of
many popular aircraft and helicopter types – whether learning
to fly, converting onto type, becoming a club pilot or considering becoming an owner.
Compiled by Dr Guy Gratton, lecturer in Aeronautics at Brunel University, UK and renowned
microlight pilot, engineer and test pilot, all the
information is based upon the manufacturers
approved operations manual and from personal flying experience. Sections include correct approach speed and flap settings, main
flying speeds, emergency drills, type of engine
fitted and landing or permit information. Microlight Flyers Handbook contains the core information required for flight.

The Robinson R44 is a new addition to the range and describes the helicopter in detail including construction features; equipment and handling; expanded checklist; weight
& balance and performance calculations. Each Pilot’s Guide
is based on practical operating and ownership experience –
the good and the not-so-good – including those aspects of
each type’s operation that the manufacturer won’t always
want to tell you about in the POH/FM.
Illustrated throughout with drawings, graphs, charts and photographs, the Robinson R44 Pilot’s Guide is recommended
