The 2013 “Spirit of Our Nations” Cultural Celebration and Pow Wow showcases First Nations’ cultures, traditions and ceremonies. The Pow Wow is an opportunity to celebrate First Nations’ song and dance, with participants of all ages. Families come as dancers, drum groups and spectators. This is also an opportunity to provide to the non-First Nations community in Saskatchewan, an awareness and appreciation of First Nations culture and tradition. First Nations’ ceremonies and traditions are also integral to the success of a Pow Wow celebration. Sweat Lodges and feasts are held prior to the Pow Wow; pipes are raised and offerings are made to ask for guidance, blessings, good health and safe travels for all involved. A ceremonial tipi is raised and pipe ceremonies are held where prayers are offered for all the people. In this way, our ceremonies form a vital part of all the gatherings and proceedings of the PowWow. The “Spirit of Our Nations” Pow Wow begins with a Grand Entry song, a Flag song, a Victory song and an Honour song. The Grand entry is the public introduction and recognition of the eagle staff carriers, the flag bearers, veterans, Chiefs and Councils, dignitaries including major sponsors, guests, First Nations Pow Wow royalty and dancers, in that order. To participate in a Grand Entry is a great honour and privilege. The Flag and Victory songs are rendered to honour the veterans. In First Nations societies, they are considered our warriors. The first Intertribal dance is an Honour song and is sung to recognize all guests and dignitaries. An important part of the proceedings includes an Elder providing an invocation prayer. The ensure that the FSIN Pow Wow is successful, there are a number of fundraising initiatives that must be undertaken. One of the major fundraising activities is the “Spirit of Our Nations” FSIN Fall Classic. FSIN is organizing this major golf event which will take place on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. All the proceeds from this golf tournament will go toward the youth dance categories at the 2013 “Spirit of Our Nations” FSIN Cultural Celebration and Pow Wow. We encourage all golf enthusiasts to support First Nations language and culture by joining us at the “Spirit of Our Nations” FSIN Fall Classic. 2013 “Spirit of Our Nations” Pow Wow Committee
