The Hazen “Cabbage”
Welcome to the lake!
We’re glad to have you. Please make yourself at home and fully enjoy
our Door County “Cabbage” (that’s a cross between a cabin and a
cottage). The following pages contain far too much information about
your stay at our place. Please don’t feel like you need to read this in
its entirety, just know that if you have a question about your stay, it’s
probably answered in these pages. If you can’t find the answer, please
feel free to call me. Enjoy!

Before You Go
The “Cabbage” Website:
http://hazencabbage.com
Our website contains lots of helpful information. The “Directions”
page contains a link to Google Maps and can help you with driving
directions to our cabin. The website also contains web links to local
weather, the Door County Chamber and
other helpful sites.
What to pack:
The breezes off Lake Michigan can
make Door County quite a bit cooler
than the rest of the state. It’s always a
good idea to bring a few extra layers.
During the summer months, you might
want to pack some sort of water shoes for navigating the lakefront.
The bay is mostly sand, but to get to it, you need to walk through
about 20 yards of slippery rocks. However, you don’t need to worry
about bath towels, beach towels, sheets, blankets or pillows. There
should be plenty of clean linens ready for you to use.
Food, toiletries and other supplies
The cabin is usually stocked with a good supply
of condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, and
peanut butter). There should also be coffee, tea,
paper towels, toilet paper, shampoo and soap.
Feel free to use what’s on hand but if you use
any of the supplies, please buy more.

At the Lake
Getting in
The cabin is equipped with a coded-entry dead bolt. If you arrive at
the cabin after nightfall, touch the button on the top portion of the
lock (it’s labeled “Schlage”). This will illuminate the entire keypad.
Enter the the 4-digit code provided. This will allow the bolt
knob directly below the keypad to be active for
approximately 10 seconds. Turn the
bolt knob to the right to open the
deadbolt. Please note it might be
necessary to pull the door towards you
to release some of the pressure on the
deadbolt. After 10 seconds, the bolt knob
will spin freely until the code is entered
again. To lock, enter the code again and
turn the bolt knob to turn the deadbolt to
the lock position. If this lock does not work,
there is a “Supra” lock box next to the electric meter on the side of
the cabin. Enter the first 3 digits of the code provided and the box
will release a key that can be used to manually open the door.
Once you’re in
Immediately upon entering the cabin, you’ll need to turn on the water
pump and the water heater. In the bedroom on your left (as you enter
the cabin), there is a circuit panel. Turn on the two switches marked
“water pump” and “water heater”. They should be the only two
switches that were off.

Heating and AC
In the colder months, the cabin heat is set to
approximately 45 degrees. It will be quite
cold when you first get in the cabin. Turn
the room thermostats to approximate 70
degrees and set the “Mr. Slim” (the Heat
Pump) to 75 degrees or so
and the cabin should warm up nicely.
The remote control for the “Mr Slim” is
mounted above the thermostat in the living
room. It can be a bit intimidating to use, so the manual
is in the “Cabin Instruction” binder at the cabin. The important
things to know are 1) when the heat pump is first powered on, the
unit will not blow hot or cold for the first 15 minutes and 2) the
remote has a sliding panel on the front where you can choose the
mode, etc. Set the mode to the “sun” for heat, the “water drop” to
dehumidify and the “snowflake” to cool. Make sure the “fan” looking
symbol is showing (this means automatic). Then, set the
temperature you desire and forget it. If this all seems too
intimidating, please don’t hesitate to call me.
Mi Casa, Su Casa - Where things are
Make yourself at home. Everything you need
should be fairly easy to find. Whatever you
use, please try to return it to it’s rightful
place. Kayak paddles, lawn chairs, beach
toys (in big blue bin) and lake floaties are in
the shed. The shed key is hanging on the key
rack in the downstairs hallway. Life jackets
(kids and adults) can be found in the shed, as well as in the
downstairs bedroom closet. The linen closet contains extra sheets,

bath and beach towels and additional paper towels. Under the
bathroom vanity, you’ll find additional shampoo, conditioner, soap
and body wash. Cleaning supplies (shall you feel the need) and
additional baking pans are located in the cabinet to the left of the
refrigerator. The shelves at the base of the stairs contain games and
books. If you start a book and don’t have time to finish it, feel free to
take it with you. In the same spirit, if you finish a book while you’re
here, you are welcome to add it to our library. However, please don’t
take movies or games from the cabin.
An important note about the kayaks
The kayaks are heavy. A few of them cannot be
carried by one person. Please, please do not try.
The hulls of several of the kayaks have holes in
them from being dragged on the ground and on
the rough boardwalk. There are wheels in the
shed than can help with their transport.
The dreaded hallway red light
First and foremost, if the light in the downstairs hallway comes on,
DON’T PANIC. This is the light telling us that our holding tank (that
holds our waste and drain water) is more than 2/3 full. So, at your
convenience, call Peil Sanitation at 920-839-2424 (a local call from
the cabin phone) and tell them the Hazen cabin at 11098 N. Sand Bay
Lane needs a pump out. Even if they don’t get to it for a few days
(which is likely), the holding tank has plenty of room for showers,
laundry and other things. Just remember, it is a holding tank, so try
to conserve water when showering and washing dishes.
Garbage and recycling
We FINALLY have a garbage service serving the cabbage! Say
goodbye to the days of driving to the dump or hauling your garbage

home with you. Simply put garbage in the trash bin and recycling
(glass, plastic #1&2, aluminum and tin) in the recycling bin. Plastic
bags and other trash should go in the trash bin. Going Garbage will
pick it up every other Thursday. No need to pull the cans out to the
curb, they will come into the driveway to collect the garbage.
The cabin phone (920-854-6128)
Feel free to use the cabin phone to make local and limited longdistance calls. Cell coverage can be spotty in the Door, so feel free to
give family and friends the cabin number. It’s 920-854-6128. And,
although you may truly miss your relatives in former Yugoslavia,
please don’t use the phone for international calling. We appreciate
your self-control.
Drinking water
The water out of the tap is safe to drink and the well is tested yearly.
TV, DirecTV and VCR
If you just can’t stand the view (or perhaps it’s obstructed by
darkness) and you need to watch a bit of television, please note there
are three different remotes. The white remote controls the DirecTV.
We’ve got the basic stations that you’ll find in Madison. To watch
DirecTV, just hit the “on” button on the upper right-hand corner of
the DirecTV remote. In the event you get the “No Video Signal”
message, just make sure you’re on “Video 1” by selecting the “Input”
button on the TV remote. The channel up/down and volume control
on the DirecTV remote should operate the TV. To watch a DVD, push
the “Input” button on the TV remote and select “DVD”. You should
then be able to use the DVD remote to control the DVD player (located
inside the upper cabinet). Note: You’ll need to keep the door open for
the remote to control the DVD player during a movie. (Unlike
Superman, the remote cannot see through doors.) For volume
For more information please call:
608.444.6898
control while watching a movie, use the white DirecTV remote or the
TV remote. Above the TV, you’ll find movies as well as a channel
guide and equipment manuals (for reading when you REALLY get
bored). There is also a TV/DVD player located upstairs in the Kid’s
Kingdom, just in case the kids want to watch “Muppets Take
Manhattan” for the 41st time and you already know the ending. The
remote and additional movies are located in the drawer of the small
table that supports the TV.
Washer and Dryer
The washer and dryer at the cabin are for your use. There should be
detergent and softener sheets. The washing machine has a nice “time
saver” button that seems to clean just as well as the long cycle. One
warning about the washer, you only need about 1/3 the normal
amount of detergent. The dryer has a “dry sensor” cycle that is nice
when you want to leave the dryer running when you leave the cabin.
It will only run until the load is dry.
Fireplace and fire pit
There’s nothing like a warm fire in the
fireplace or fire pit to help you solve all
of the world’s problems. Lucky for you,
we’ve got plenty of wood. You’ll find
kindling in the wooden bucket to the
left of the wood box. Additional wood
is located outside under the back
deck. When burning in the fireplace,
please make sure the flue is open
(lever on top of fire box is pulled forward).
Also, please do not burn paper or garbage in the fireplace. It
For more information please call:
608.444.6898
gums up the chimney and can increase the risk of chimney fires. For
fires in the fire pit, please do not put rocks, cans or glass in the firepit.
Everything that goes in, must be shoveled out. Please be courteous.
Also, make sure the fire is contained before leaving it unattended.
Please be careful with your fires, because of local and DNR laws (and
the fact that most of the property is wetlands), if our cabin were to
burn down, we would not be allowed to rebuild...and that would be a
major bummer.
Cliff Notes summary

downstairs bedroom circuit breaker panel.
In the winter months, turn up the “Mr. Slim” heat pump and the
thermostats in the bedrooms. (75 degrees should warm it up
nicely).
Please don’t smoke in our cabin. Thank you.
Closing the cabin
Purchase any supplies you’ve used (toilet paper, trash bags, soap)
Return Kayaks to their rack, lawn chairs and any other items from
shed. Lock shed and return key to key rack.
