Blarney Stew: Sunday, January 18th at 1:30PM Blarney Stew is a group of seasoned professional musicians playing acoustic instruments. Utilizing fiddle, mandolin, guitar, stand-up bass and percussion the band performs a mix of Irish crowd-pleasers, traditional Celtic music as well as the occasional reinterpreted country classic. (snow date 01/25) Dynamic Duos with Jeff and Karen: Sunday, February 1st at 2:30PM Dynamic Duos is a performance of pop duets from the 60s through today with songs by Sonny & Cher, John Denver & Olivia Newton-John, Ian & Sylvia - as well as current duets made famous by Lady Antebellum, Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles, The Indigo Girls and more. Jeff & Karen also perform their own originals from their CD, Jersey Fresh. (snow date 02/08) Jiayi He, Harmonica Virtuoso: Sunday, February 15th at 1:30PM You have to see and hear it to believe it! Jiayi He, world class, awardwinning harmonica virtuoso, regularly performs throughout Europe and Asia and has appeared on ABC, NBC, News 12, Sino Television and others. He has recorded for movies and CDs and has soloed with many major symphony orchestras...too many to list. “I use my collections to show the audience different types of harmonicas including Chromatic, Tremolo, Diatonic, Bass and the largest and smallest harmonica in the world. I have 300 harmonicas.” (snow date 02/22) Irish Fiddler, Brian Conway: Sunday, March 1st at 2PM Premier Irish American fiddler Brian Conway performs with a skill, grace and force that are steeped in tradition but distinctively his own. Well known in the New York/ Celtic community, Conway has won numerous fiddling competitions and has been called one of the best fiddlers of his generation. He will be accompanied by Brendan Dolan. Brendan teaches traditional Irish music on piano and flute. His most recent recordings are with Brian Conway on Consider the Source, Billy McComiskey and Mick Moloney. (snow date 03/08) Flower Power: A Tribute to 60s Pop Music: Sunday, March 15 th at 1:30PM Enjoy the exciting and revolutionary sounds of the groups that changed music forever like The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Youngbloods, Donovan, Tommy James and the Shondells and The Young Rascals. Annual Association Meeting and Trustee Elections Suffern Free Library will hold its annual meeting and trustee elections on Tuesday, February 24th at 8 PM. Voting for Trustees takes place between the hours of 10AM and 8PM in the Administration office. This year there are four trustee seats (3 year terms) up for election. In 2015, Donalee Berard, Mario Pensa, Michael Minevich and Warren Berbit are all eligible for re-election. Any resident interested in running for a trustee position may pick up a petition in the Administration offices between January 5 th and February 6th (petitions must be filed by February 9th). Any resident of the Ramapo Central School District—for 30 days or more—who is 18 years or older, and who is a member of the Association, or any other qualified voter of the Ramapo Central School District, is eligible to vote in the annual election. Adult Events JANUARY Juba South Sudan Sex Workers ∙ Saturday, January 3rd at 3PM Humanitarian worker, Andrew Simmonds, is back to talk about his latest experience in Juba (the Capital of South Sudan). He will share the back stories and videos of the sex workers which he interviewed as part of his humanitarian mission. Across the Sahara Desert in North Africa by Truck, 1979: People, Places, Landscapes ∙ Friday, January 9th at 1PM Barry Kass is a Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at S.U.N.Y. Orange. His presentation, vividly illustrated with rare and unusual photographs taken along the journey, will describe the events of a six week expedition across the Sahara Desert he joined in 1979. Prof. Kass visited such remote places as the Muslim holy city of Karouain in Tunisia, and desert oasis settlements such as Ghardaia in Algeria and Agadez in Niger. The diversity of human cultures found in the desert, including the Tuareg camel nomads of the southern Sahara and the Berbers of North Africa, will be described through Prof. Kass' first hand account of his adventures. We will be using char- WINTER 2015 coal sticks or pencils. Many objects will be used to draw from learning perspective, proportion, angles and composition. We will also learn about the gesture of the object and have fun doing quick one minute drawings to warm up. Come and have fun drawing. Hip and Knee Disorders ∙ Tuesday, January 27th at 1:30PM Dr. Alexander is an orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty training in the treatment of osteoarthritis and disorders of the knee and hip. His presentation will discuss the diagnosis of arthritis of the hip and knee and the various treatments available, ranging from conservative to surgical options. Balancing Your Sugar Levels ∙ Saturday, February 28th at 11AM Marija Santo-Sarnyai is a Certified Natural Health practitioner, specializing in Nutrition, Herbology and Lifestyle Changes. This talk will focus on hypoglycemia. She will discuss how to avoid sugar lows, the endocrine glands involved in low sugar level and how to strengthen those glands, as well as the dietary and lifestyle changes that will help. 2nd session March 14th. The Great Decisions eight-month discussion series is designed to engage citizens in learning about the world. Participants will read from the Great Decisions briefing book, which features impartial thoughtprovoking analyses on eight issues of concern to policymakers today. The Red Apple Rest was a legendary restaurant open from the 1930s through the 1980s on New York’s Route 17. Located midway between New York City and the resorts of the Catskill Mountains, the restaurant served as a who’s who of entertainment luminaries. Elaine Freed Lindenblatt was born into restaurant royalty as the youngest child of the establishment’s founder, Reuben Freed. For her, the Red Apple was the “family room” across the road—one she shared with over a million customers every year. In this presentation, she shares her stories, photos and memorabilia. She will recreate what it was like to be raised in the fishbowl of a round-the-clock family operation. Her new book, Stop At The Red Apple, will be available for purchase and signing. MARCH Women and Money ∙ Monday, March 30th at 7PM Neo Classicism and Romanticism in Nineteenth Century Art Tuesday, March 3rd at 1:30PM Explore the rivalry between the two powerhouse art styles of the early 19th century. Staying Positive While Living with Disabilities Friday, March 27th at 11AM Patricia Long will talk about maintaining a positive outlook while dealing with a disability; patiently achieving and tolerating various acts and changes of the disability; keeping yourself safe at home, while traveling, shopping and the various activities of daily living. Patricia will share resources available in Rockland County. Patricia Long is a disabled person for 15 years and remains active in the community. She previously worked for the County of Rockland.
