Music To Our Ears
This year’s Spring Benefit called “Music To Our Ears” took place on Saturday, April 20th at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park. The
evening included: a cocktail hour with Hors D’oeuvres and music performed by The Joey Rosin Quartet, dinner, a silent, live and
reverse auction and a piano concert by Michael Brown. Mr. Brown is a Juilliard graduate and RSMI alumnus who took first prize at the
2010 Concert Artists Guild Competition, resulting in performances at Carnegie, Avery Fisher and Alice Tully halls, where the New York
Times praised his “vividly characterized” and “free-spirited performances.”
There were 133 people in attendance and over $88,000 net was raised with up to an additional $2,500 to come from a matching gift.
This event ranks as the second highest netting special event in agency history. We would not have been able to accomplish this
without the significant underwriting from the Eugene and Janet Lerner Foundation and the Koenig Family Charitable Foundation. Please

Some highlights from the evening include: $16,100 raised in the reverse auction, which will be used specifically to purchase items for
each program division; Cash raffle winners were Amy Gaddini - $1,000 for 1st, Alice Childs - $500 for 2nd, Kevin Katz, Board Member $250 for 3rd and Mary Von Thaden - $250 for 4th. Mrs. Childs and Mr. Katz were gracious to donate their winnings back to SHORE.
Valery Keller of Daniel’s Jewelry in Glenview donated 64 custom earrings and one set of diamond earrings. The earrings were sold for
$25 and all sales, $1,625.00, was donated to SHORE. Aneeta Duva was the lucky winner of the diamond earrings. Mr. Ronald
Bernardi, Manager of Sunset Foods, ran a spirited live auction that featured a framed print from renowned artist and sculptor Dennis
Downes, an Honorary Bat Boy or Girl for the Chicago White Sox, a VIP Experience with the Chicago Bulls, four Chicago Cubs tickets
with the opportunity to take pictures on the field after the game, a wine package with over 40 bottles of wine and a private in-home wine
tasting with a professional wine advisor. In addition, Timothy Buzard, husband of board member and spring benefit chair Sandra
Buzard, was instrumental in securing the sports items for the live and silent auction from all the major Chicago sports teams, which
generated major funds for the agency.

Luncheon for Second Time Around
Thrift & Gift Shop Volunteers
On April 27th, a luncheon was held at the SHORE Joseph
Koenig, Sr. Training Center in Morton Grove for the over
30 volunteers who work at the agency’s Second Time
Around Thrift & Gift Shop in Skokie. The event was the
agency’s way of saying “Thank You” to the volunteers for
all the time, energy and service they provide to the shop,
which the proceeds benefit SHORE. Meridith Murray,
Charity Re-Sale Shop Manager, planned the event that
featured viewing of SHORE’s agency video, reviewing the
shop’s new electronic sales system called POS (Point of
Sales), which serves as a cash register, and the
volunteers had an opportunity to socialize with each
other. Everyone had an enjoyable time.
The shop serves as a major source of revenue for
SHORE and is always in need of volunteers. If you are

Super Senior – Gloria Moore
On Thursday, May 23rd, Gloria Galloway Moore, SHORE
Board Member, was honored as a “Super Senior” at the North
Shore Senior Center’s 40th Annual Super Senior Day. The
event recognizes the volunteer service provided by seniors at
non-profit organizations throughout the North Shore area.
Gloria was amongst 41 people honored and she received a
certificate and pin. Her name will be added to the center’s
Honor Roll Book, which lists over 2,000 seniors who were
awarded “Super Senior” status since 1973.
Since the early 1960’s, Gloria has volunteered for the benefit
of SHORE. She was an active member and former president
of the Lakewood League, which was a woman’s auxiliary club
that was set up for the sole purpose of volunteering and
fundraising for SHORE. Gloria has served on SHORE’s Board
of Directors since July 1, 1991, and has been on numerous
committees including the Spring Benefit Committee. She has
also volunteered at the agency’s re-sale shop, Second Time
Around Thrift and Gift, for over 15 years.
Thank you Gloria for all your time and support, which helps
enhance our mission to improve the quality of life for the
children and adults that we serve.
Did You Know?
Debora Braun, SHORE’s Executive Director, was nominated
as a new board member for the Illinois Association of
Rehabilitation Facilities (IARF) in January 2013. She will
attend meetings in Springfield during the year.

IARF is a leading trade association comprised of community
based organizations whose missions are to support
individuals with disabilities and/or mental illnesses in
achieving their maximum independence and live their lives to
the fullest in communities throughout Illinois. With over 80
members serving tens of thousands of individuals and
families, IARF advances a strong public policy and advocates
best practice based on person-centered planning that
achieves outcomes. The IARF members provide services to
over 900 locations across Illinois and many of the Board
Members - like others within the membership of IARF - are
among the top 10 employers in their respective counties.
Art Dykstra, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, stated

IARF Addresses DSP Wages for
Direct Care Staff at Recent
Legislature Hearings
On May 15th, the Illinois Senate and House Human
Services Committees held hearings on the impact of low
wages for workers at agencies serving individuals with
intellectual and other developmental disabilities in the
community. IARF - Illinois Association of Rehabilitation
Facilities, provided a written statement and Janet Stover,
President & CEO, outlined the importance of DSP’s
(Direct Service Professionals) to community-based
providers. The message was simple and powerful:
“DSP’s are the difference between supporting people in
the community and them living in institutions.” IARF is
building a case for the state to implement a multi-year
plan to increase wages for DSPs.
IARF member agencies were asked to have their DSP’s
write an outline of a day in their life and why they make a
difference. At SHORE, there are 61 DSP’s. Below are a
few quotes that came from SHORE DSP’s.
“As a DSP and working with people with
disabilities, I ensure that they are safe and help
them in their daily needs. They depend on me and
that is why I make a difference in their lives.”
“My typical day starts with seeing the individuals I
serve smile when they arrive and I am greeted with
a hug. I help them accomplish or complete fine
motor tasks like using a spoon to feed themselves. I
love what I do and I love my job!”
“Everyday for me is a great day. I look forward to
working with clients that depend on staff to
advocate for them. It is an honor and privilege for
people with disabilities to do normal activities i.e.
cook, brush their hair and teeth and go out in the
community, etc. It takes a strong individual with a
warm large caring heart to make a difference in
their lives.”
“My day consists of developing new and different
strategies for learning and motivating my clients.
Working at SHORE has given me a new
perspective. I look forward to coming to work
because the clients make me smile.”
Grants & Gifts
The Annual Appeal, which is the agency’s largest direct mail
fundraiser, is at a new record with $150,238 raised. To date,
331 donors contributed to the appeal, 152 have increased their
gift from last year, 29 are new donors, and 21 are first time
donors to the Appeal.

On Wednesday, April 24th, Debbie Shulruf, Director Lois
Lloyd Center, Georgette Smith, Accounts Receivable, and
Mary Matz, Senior Development Officer, attended a
ceremonial check presentation at U.S. Cellular Field in
conjunction with being a grant recipient from this organization.
Timothy Buzard, Board Member Sandra Buzard’s husband,
works for the White Sox and was instrumental in SHORE
receiving a $5,000 grant for the Early Intervention Program.
The ceremony was broadcasted on WGN Channel 9. A lunch
reception and game followed the ceremony.

Ticket to Work
SHORE Koenig Training Center is an Employment
Network (EN) for the Ticket to Work program. The Ticket
to Work Program provides most people receiving Social
Security benefits (beneficiaries) more choices for
receiving employment services. Under this program, the
Social Security Administration (SSA) issues tickets to
eligible beneficiaries who, in turn, may choose to assign
those tickets to an EN of their choice to obtain
employment services, vocational rehabilitation services,
or other support services necessary to achieve a
vocational (work) goal. The EN, if they accept the ticket,
will coordinate and provide appropriate services to help
the beneficiary find and maintain employment.

Senior’s Program
Did you know that SHORE offers a special program for
Senior Citizens? The Seniors Program is a retirement
option for people aged 55 or older who want to retire from
regular vocational programs. It is a more relaxed and
social program, which runs Monday through Friday 9:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and serves seven seniors. The
program staff is Joan Gubin, Developmental Trainer, and
Lisa Rossi, Assistant Developmental Trainer. They work
on stimulating the participant’s senses through a variety
of activities i.e. music, arts and crafts, math, games and
community outings. Once a month, the group makes
fresh bread from scratch and they enjoy the process from
mixing all the way through eating. The seniors are very
active and the program has received positive feedback
from both the participants and many family members.

Alyssa Janicki – JVC Volunteer
For the third year in a row, SHORE’s Joseph Koenig, Sr.
Training Center has had the opportunity to enlist the help
of volunteers from the Jesuit Volunteer Corp (JVC).
Since early August, Alyssa Janicki has been working fulltime as a Developmental Trainer with a group of 14
trainees at the center. Her primary job responsibility is to
supervise the group; train them on packaging and
assembly jobs, check their quality and track their payroll.
Everyone in Alyssa’s group has an Individual Program
Plan and she implements each person's goals; training
them on a variety of skills such as pro-social behavior,
functional academics and good work habits, to name a
few.

The mission of the JVC offers women and men an
opportunity to work full-time for justice and peace. Jesuit
Volunteers are called to the mission of serving the poor
directly, working for structural change in the United
States, and accompanying people in developing
countries. The challenge to Jesuit Volunteers is to
integrate Christian faith by working and living among the
poor and marginalized, by living simply and in the
community with other Jesuit Volunteers, and by
examining the causes of social injustice. Since 1956 the
JVC has worked in collaboration with Jesuits, whose
spirituality the volunteers incorporate in their work,
community and prayer life. The JVC offers the volunteers
a year or more of experience that will open their minds
and hearts to live always conscious of the poor,
committed to the Church’s mission of promoting justice in
the service of faith.
Alyssa was interested in the JVC Program because she
attended a Jesuit school for college and wanted to
experience the values that were taught. She also wanted
to see if she would be interested in working in the service
field as a career.
Girl Scout Troop Adopts SHORE
After learning about SHORE and the services we provide,
Girl Scout Troop 41241 of Glenview decided to adopt
SHORE Homes West as part of a service project. Ron
Schell, long-time friend and volunteer of SHORE, showed
the troop the agency’s video and talked about his
experience working with our persons served.
The troop was very interested in ways they could help us
that they ended up doing the following: they made a
poster about SHORE and sold Girl Scout cookies on our
behalf; made a donation from their profit of cookie sales;
Valentine Day cards were created for the residents at
SHORE Homes West; they painted flower pots and
planted tomato plants for the residents, and toys, books
and other gently used items were donated to the
agency’s Second Time Around Thrift and Gift Shop.
The troop earned a service patch for their efforts.
SHORE’s residents, board of directors and staff greatly
appreciated the troop’s kindness. In turn, 80 boxes of
Girl Scout cookies were purchased to help the troop with
their fundraising efforts.
Alyssa attended Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio and
earned a Bachelor Degree in German. She is originally
from Lansing, Michigan. When asked about her
experience at SHORE, Alyssa stated, “It has been a great
year and I am glad to have had a challenging
experience.” She enjoyed the parties i.e. Summerfest
and the Holiday Party in December because the trainees
had a lot of fun and were so excited about the events.
Alyssa said she likes the individual program plans that
each trainee has since they clearly state the goals that
they need to accomplish. She has also helped her group
come up with creative ways to accomplish their goals,
which ultimately empowers them.

When Alyssa completes her year at SHORE, she will
have provided nearly 3,000 hours of services to the
agency. She plans to continue one more year of service
through the JVC Program in Tucson, Arizona as a Social
Justice Coordinator at a local church.

and wishes her well in all her future endeavors.

In Memoriam
SHORE is saddened by the recent loss of Michael
Kochan, Margaret Tighe and Carolyn Conlon. Michael
was a resident at SHORE’s Jean F. Karger CILA
(Community Integrated Living Arrangement) in Skokie
and passed away from natural causes at the age of 67 on
February 20th. Margaret attended the Adult Services
Program at the Lois Lloyd Center and passed away on
April 15th.

Second Time Around Thrift & Gift Shop
The Auto Doctor
Mrs. Conlon passed away in mid-April. She was a longtime volunteer at the Second Time Around Thrift & Gift
Shop. Mrs. Conlon’s son Christopher attended SHORE’s
Koenig Training Center for many years before he passed
away in 2001. Christopher’s passing did not stop Carolyn
from staying involved with SHORE. In fact, Caroline
volunteered regularly each week at the shop. She was
very friendly and well liked by the other shop volunteers
and regular customers. In 2008, SHORE presented
Carolyn with the Joyce C. Buehler Volunteer of the Year
Award for her outstanding dedication and service to the
shop.
As a result of significant gifts made in Carolyn’s memory,
her name has been added to the agency’s Endowment
Honor Roll Plaque, which is on display at SHORE’s
Regenstein Administration Center. This Honor Roll
recognizes sizable gifts made to the agency in honor or in
memory of someone and is used to ensure the brighter
future for the individuals we serve.

Pizzamania Benefits SHORE
February 12th, which was “Fat Tuesday,” the Kiwanis
Club of Evanston hosted “Pizzamania” at Giordano’s in
Evanston. This year, 255 children and adults enjoyed an
evening of unlimited pizza and beverages that were
served to them by Kiwanis members and volunteers from
the Evanston Township High School Wrestling Team.
Guests also received beaded necklaces to celebrate
Mardi Gras compliments of Tom McRaith, Kiwanian and
SHORE Honorary Board Member.
Special thanks are extended to the Kiwanis Club for
hosting the event, Giordano’s, the Evanston H.S.
Wrestling Team for volunteering, the Board for supporting
the event, Circle Realty Advisors for allowing guests to
park for free at their 500 Davis Street garage, and the
individuals and company’s listed that were ad mat
sponsors. Please patronize the businesses whenever
possible.

Holiday Spirit
The month of December had our persons served and
staff in high spirits as numerous holiday parties were held
at many of SHORE’s facilities. The Lois Lloyd Center had
a luncheon and family members of persons served in the
Adult Services Program attended. Students and staff
from the North Cook Young Adult Academy in Skokie did
an amazing job volunteering. Santa Claus and Rudolf the
Red-Nosed Reindeer even made a surprise visit to the
delight of the crowd. The center also had a doordecorating contest with Group 7 winning 1st place with the
door theme of “Hanging Out for the Holidays.”

“Apple Dumpling”
An open house was held at both SHORE Homes West
and Buehler House/SHORE Homes East. Families were
asked to bring an appetizer or dessert while SHORE
supplied main dishes. For all the holidays, the CILAs
(Community Integrated Living Arrangements) get together
to enjoy a special dinner. SHORE’s Joseph Koenig, Sr.
Center had a pizza party. Volunteers from the
DoubleTree Hotel in Skokie brought a gift for everyone
with Santa Claus to greet the excited trainees. In
addition, Joe Koenig, owner of Trim-Tex, Inc. and a few
staff distributed gifts to the nearly 170 trainees.
In lieu of a Staff Appreciation Holiday Party, each SHORE
employee received a small monetary gift, which came
from the generosity of our Board of Directors, parents and
family members of our persons served and Therapy
Providers of America. Other tokens of appreciation for
staff came in the form of baked goods and other food
from family members. Staff was very appreciative of the
money and the kindness shown. Thank you to all who
contributed to the enjoyment of the holidays.

Staff and persons served from the Adult Services Program
gathered for a picture after the play called “Apple Dumpling”
was finished. The play was the idea of Dawn Beasley,
Developmental Activities Trainer. She along with other
program staff spent a great deal of time practicing and making
the props with our persons served. It was an entertaining play
and enjoyed by everyone in attendance, which included many
parents of our persons served.

Persons served from the Adult Services Program brought
boxes of donated food collected from SHORE staff to
Senator Daniel Biss’ office that would be donated
to area food pantries.
SHORE Community Services’ Invites You to the
19th Annual Golf Outing on Friday, July 19th
at the Deerfield Golf Club in Riverwoods.
All golfers will receive 18 holes of championship golf with GPS
equipped riding cart, free practice balls before the round, lunch and
dinner at the club and fun golf games i.e. Golf Ball Launcher,
Scattered Flags and Bang the Gong.
