The Symposium encourages the rekindling of collaborations and friendships, discussion, debate, the sharing of knowledge, the sharing of research techniques and lessons in conservation - all toward addressing questions about the biology and conservation of sea turtles and their habitats. The 36th Annual Symposium is being held this week, from 29 February to 4 March 2016, at the Universidad Científica del Sur and Maria Angola Convention Center in historic Lima, Perú. Besides providing the many advantages of a large capital city, hosting the symposium in Lima provides the opportunity to learn about the region’s fascinating history, diverse cultures, and extraordinary flora and fauna. The city’s vantage overlooking the Pacific Ocean also reflects the connections, spanning centuries, these peoples have had with the sea. The theme of this year’s Symposium is Crossroads. We chose this to reflect the region’s importance as a foraging ground for five species of sea turtles and to highlight the critical juncture at which we find ourselves with sea turtle conservation. This theme also reminds us that this is the Symposium’s first time in South America. We also celebrate the new generations of researchers and conservationists that continue to keep the ISTS innovating and energized and we want to use this opportunity to promote their broad attendance from throughout the region and around the world. Annual Sea Turtle Symposia aim to strengthen regional and international conservation efforts by providing a venue for the sharing of cutting edge research and conservation practices. Symposium participants have been able to promote their research, connect with other people working in their field, and train future sea turtle advocates. The annual gatherings also provide a unique opportunity for participants to collaborate on projects, forge new partnerships and establish the international networks vital for successful sea turtle conservation. In Lima, we will take this a step further as we hold a series of workshops addressing other threatened marine taxa including marine mammals, seabirds and elasmobranchs. We are certain that sea turtle conservation and marine conservation as a whole will benefit from these expanded conversations and linkages. I am so very pleased to welcome you all to my home town, Lima, Perú! I encourage you to make the most of our short time together, here at this crossroad of ancient and modern cultures on the edge of the Pacific. GENERAL INFO SOCIAL EVENTS ISTS WORKSHOPS Monday, 29 Feb Location: Universidad Científica del Sur OPENING REMARKS (Presenting author in BOLD) 9:00 – 9:15 am Location: Rotonda (Villa 2) Sonia Valle, Universidad Científica del Sur Larry B. Crowder, Standford University Joanna Alfaro Shigueto, President ISTS Terrapin, Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Meeting Room: PL 102 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 5 pm The aim of the meeting is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, field methodology, and philosophy between in and ex-situ, marine and non-marine, chelonian researchers and conservationists. Threads common to terrestrial, freshwater and marine turtles will be presented and examined. The general meeting plan is to present two days of a combination of oral presentations and videos. Last year, the field trip was so successful that we are looking to expand it. We are exploring the possibility of an Amazonian River excursion to accompany the Symposium. Organizer: Chuck Schaffer Marine Turtle Bycatch Reduction and Conservation: Understanding and developing collaborative research capacities among marine turtle conservationists. Room: Auditorium (Villa 1), 9:15 am - 5 pm The main objective of this year’s CFR session in Perú is to explore how we as marine turtle (MT) conservationists working or wishing to work on fisheries and bycatch issues can foster voluntary behavior changes by fishermen in favor of saving MTs. The session design is based on responses to interviews (N=167) that were conducted within the ISTS community. During this day we will introduce the concept of collaborative/participatory research, share examples of how scientific collaborations with fishermen have led to actions: legislation change, changes in profitability, and contributed to improved sustainability of fisheries livelihoods and resources. Through social science (human dimensions) of fisher/scientist interactions we will explore why certain scenarios from the region and abroad induce these positive changes in behavior. It is hoped that this session will help participants understand and adopt CFR/participatory research notions and apply this to their own research in the region and beyond for the benefit of MT conservation, and the fishermen that depend on the bountifulness of marine resources. In the afternoon there will be a panel of fishermen and their representatives that will share their views on: What is needed by gillnet fishermen to be able to address MT bycatch in Perú? What are the other priorities for fishermen that come with conserving MTs? Organizer: Tony Michel Nalovic MON 29 - WORKSHOPS MON 29 - WORKSHOPS GIS Workshop Room: PL 103 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 5 pm This year’s expanded workshop session will explore available commercial and open source GIS software, best practices for data management and visualization, common data types and analyses relevant to sea turtle research, database management, and provide a forum for users to ask questions and receive guidance on their current GIS needs. A schedule of talks will be published in advance of the Symposium so that participants can attend the talks/demos most applicable to their interests and skill level. Sessions will span an introduction for users completely new to GIS to intermediate/advanced GIS techniques (integration of statistical scripts, modeling, automation, and database management). Demonstrations using various software platforms, and both simulated and real world data, will be presented. Due to hardware and time limitations, demos will not be ‘hands on’ but will be paced to allow attendees to follow along on their own computers if desired. Significant time will be given to questions and discussion. In addition, the organizers of the workshop will set up ‘GIS office hours’ spaced throughout the symposium where users can chat 1-on-1 with GIS professionals about their GIS needs and questions. Please note that all presentations will be in English. Organizer: Andrew DiMatteo Eastern Pacific Leatherbacks Workshop Room: PL 104 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 3 pm The LaudOPO (Eastern Pacific leatherback) network was first created to develop a regional plan of action to stabilize and recover the Eastern Pacific leatherback population through integrated regional efforts to reduce threats, increase hatchling production, and strengthen regional coordination. This workshop will convene members of the LaudOPO network to discuss recent advances toward meeting specific goals described in the regional action plan, specifically standardization and compilation of bycatch and nesting and nest temperature data, and to establish a plan for future work. Participation in this workshop will be by invitation only. Organizers: Velkiss Gadea & Bryan Wallace Photo ID Workshop Room: PL 108 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 5 pm This Photo-ID workshop will provide opportunities for attendees to learn about various PhotoID programs and techniques used with sea turtles and other marine organisms. Presentations will be given by researchers using Photo-ID, as well as programmers who have and are developing Photo-ID software for wildlife applications. “Discuss and Dream” break-out sessions will give small groups opportunities to sit with experts and software programmers to discuss Photo-ID needs, innovations, and applications for the future of Photo-ID in the conservation community. Aim: To introduce Photo-ID systems and engage new sea turtle project users in the process of Photo-ID. Organizer: Stephen G. Dunbar, Assistants: Jillian Hudgins, Claire Jean Marine Mammal Workshop Room: PL 105 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 5 pm This marine mammal workshop will provide opportunities for participants to learn about marine mammal basic biology, research methods, and main threats to these populations. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with professional researchers working in the region and establish possible networks. The workshop setting is planned to stimulate MON 29 - WORKSHOPS MON 29 - WORKSHOPS questions and active learning, including field research techniques, collecting and analyzing data, and how to develop critical thinking skills. This workshop is specially designed for participant interested to increase their marine mammal knowledge. Organizer: Fernando Félix Scientific and Intentional Capture of Sea Turtles Workshop Room: PL 106 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 5 pm Most scientific studies of sea turtles are conducted on nesting beaches where females come ashore to lay their eggs. However, the number of research and conservation projects based in feeding and growing areas are increasing. The study of sea turtles in their marine habitats becomes essential to understand the biology and their life cycle. Nowadays, the Scientific and Intentional Capture of Sea Turtles is considered one of the most useful and successful field techniques to achieve these goals. This workshop is an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with specialists as well as to expand the use of these practices at inwater projects. The aim of this workshop is to share the knowledge and experience from international experts. Through individual presentations and discussion groups, attendees will learn about the different techniques and applications of the scientific and intentional capture of sea turtles. With lectures, we will analyze topics like; (i) capture methods, (ii) investigation possibilities, (iii) data collection protocols, (iv) equipment needed, (v) and basic safety rules. A debate will be opened at the end of each presentation in order to discuss these issues. This workshop is aimed specifically to scientists and technicians who work at in-water projects, and in general for the public interested in knowing more about these techniques. Organizer: Daniel González-Paredes, Co-organizers: Ximena Velez-Zuazo & Luciana Klinge South Pacific Caretta (CMS) Workshop Room: PL 202 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 5 pm CONVENTION FOR CONSERVATION OF MIGRATORY SPECIES: Single Species Action Plan for Loggerhead Turtle in the South Pacific Ocean. This Regional Plan has been designed for the loggerhead turtles that occupy the South Pacific Ocean. Information to be presented during workshop include habitat use spanning nesting in central eastern Australia and New Caledonia, post hatchling dispersal on the east Australian Current, small immature turtle residency in oceanic waters off Chile and Perú and recruitment to coastal waters of the South Western Pacific (Coral Sea, Tasman Sea and Solomon Sea). This data have been summarized in the context of three decades of growth to first breeding and two to four decades of adult breeding life. Threats to these loggerhead turtles throughout their migratory range and diverse habitats are reviewed. Trends in the size of nesting populations at index beaches across five decades in response to threats and management actions will be also presented. The significant collapse of recruitment of large immature loggerhead turtles from their oceanic pelagic foraging to coastal benthic foraging life history phases in recent decades is of concern. The UNEP Convention for Conservation of Migratory Species at COP11 responded to the plight of this endangered stock with a resolution (Resolution 11.21) adopting a Single Species Action Plan for Loggerhead Turtles in the South Pacific. This Action Plan, while non-binding, is expected to be implemented by Signatory States. A CMS Loggerhead SSAP implementation committee has been established to prioritize projects for initial implementation. Organizer: Colin Limpus MON 29 - WORKSHOPS MON 29 - WORKSHOPS 6th MEDICINE WORKSHOP during the 36th ISTS Symposium: CROSS ROADS ... AND EXPERTISE! Room: PL 101 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 3 pm Sea turtle rehabilitation is a complex challenge that more and more facilities are facing around the world, often with few or no resources in their region. The implementation of new medical procedures, protocols and surgical techniques should be shared and implemented among rescue centers. This workshop is designed to be an opportunity for rehabilitators, veterinarians and biologists involved in sea turtle medical care to share and develop experiences and knowledge related to medicine, rehabilitation and health issues. In the first part, lectures from experienced professionals will be presented in an open forum format to allow for free-flowing discussion between lecturers and attendees. The workshop will be focused on critical care and emergency medicine, anesthesia and surgery, husbandry, and other topics designed for a general audience. In the second part, we plan to offer the chance to ‘Meet your Specialist’, where participants will have the opportunity to directly discuss particular individual cases with experts. Organizers: Daniela Freggi, Mariluz Parga & Antonio Di Bello Social Science: So you think you can survey? Workshop Room: PL 107 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 1 pm Many conservation researchers and practitioners eventually end up feeling pushed to consider research on ‘the people problem’—i.e., they desperately need to learn something from people in order to properly address a conservation issue. Often times, people charged with learning from/with actors such as local community members, government officials, tourists, experts, etc. have received no training on how to do so. Some people end up feeling overwhelmed, not knowing where to begin (rightly so! I wouldn’t want to be tasked with running a set of genetic samples with no training!). Others, at least initially, are tempted to think “I’m a person, and I’m a smart person, so how hard can it be to conduct research on/about people?” Both inaction, and jumping in with no knowledge or training are not advisable approaches. To design and implement a survey is difficult, and requires careful, informed, and thoughtful preparation, as well as reviews, and pilot testing. I am a trained social scientist (anthropology; geography; planning; environment) with almost twenty years of experience, and I am still learning how to best design and implement surveys, despite having contributed to the design of many successful surveys. Academic learning is only a part of what it takes to design a good, useful, and respectful survey—much learning occurs in the pilot testing and project implementation of surveys, as well as via feedback you receive from others (e.g., from close colleagues; from distant colleagues; from potential respondents; from related experts; from institutional research ethics boards; from actual respondents). We will use this workshop to do several things: 1) Explore the IMPORTANT BASICS of survey terminology, ethics, design, and expectations for survey data. 2) Consider and discuss examples drawn from actual and fictional surveys. 3) Collaborate on editing your surveys (surveys in progress; past surveys; outlines for future surveys). The emphasis will be on qualitative question design, and on intervieweradministered (person to person) surveys. The workshop will combine presentations and hand-outs (including a starter list of references), with hands-on survey work. PLEASE BRING SURVEYS WITH YOU. If you have no survey to bring, you can partner with another participant, and collaborate on their survey (people bringing MON 29 - WORKSHOPS MON 29 - WORKSHOPS surveys associated with universities or other such institutions should remember to include workshop input in their institutionallyrequired ethics documentation for their surveys, counting participants among those contributing to the design). You will NOT leave as a fullytrained survey-ready expert. You will learn about, discuss, and try to integrate key considerations in social science survey design into actual surveys, with assistance from trained experts. Organizers: Zoe Meletis & Aliki Panagopoulou Environmental Education Workshop Room: PL 201 (Villa 2), 9:15 am - 1 pm Objectives: To learn, share experiences, coordinate and streamline efforts as well as strengthen ties and joint actions in the environmental education area to strengthen the conservation and management of sea turtles. Thematic areas: 1. Awareness and participation. Campaigns, workshops, lectures (not inserted in educational processes but as activities of various projects) aimed at different audiences, promote environmental citizenship, and involve stakeholders, volunteers collaborative networks, as part of social responsibility and promotion of good environmental practices. 2. Projects or educational programs. Formal and institutionalized environmental education, that is tied or inserted with educational institutions and is the result of a participatory process. E.g. Environmental issues inserted in the curriculum of schools, strengthening of skills in environmental education and communication of teachers and promoters (Educating educators), etc. 3. Citizen Involvement, community participation and education, preferably with coastal communities (in marine turtle nesting and feeding areas), fishermen, etc., to reduce risks and threats. With enhancement of traditional knowledge, as the first steps toward building community-based conservation. 4. Material for dissemination and transfer, educational resources and environmental communication. The production, use, dissemination and evaluation of technologies and virtual platforms. Types of messages and how to provide them. Organizers: Paula Salinas, Nelly de Paz & Gabriela Vélez-Rubio TSD Workshop Room: PL 107 (Villa 2), 1 - 5 pm Temperature-dependent sex determination in reptiles was discovered more than 40 years ago, first in a lizard, then in a tortoise and a freshwater turtle and later in all marine turtles. TSD research has been particularly focused on the biochemical pathway(s) of sex determination and it has been partially solved: Temperature regulates the transcription of the aromatase gene and the aromatase enzyme transforms testosterone to estradiol, the latter being the feminizing hormone (in short!). However, the impact and interpretation of temperature dependent sex determination with field data has been much more complicated. Up to now, it is impossible to estimate sex ratios with certitude using a time series of temperatures taken from beach sand or from within a nest. This workshop will be a mix of presentations and best practices when analyzing sex ratio and temperatures. Organizer: Chuck Schaffer Shark Workshop Room: PL 101 (Villa 2), 9 am - 5 pm This shark workshop will provide opportunities for attendees to learn about sharks´ basic biology, species distribution and ongoing threats and management needs, using hand-on activities and case study presentations. During the first part of the workshop, attendees will learn about morphological diagnostic tool to accurately identify species subject to national and international trade. This includes a shark fin collection of species found in the Eastern Pacific from Central to South America, as well as the dissection of individuals. The afternoon session will focus on main threats to eastern Pacific shark populations, history of exploitation, protection measures and current regulations for management and conservation strategies. This workshop is planned to stimulate discussions and active learning, and is designed for participants who are interested not only in increasing their knowledge on sharks, but also in getting involved in international conservation efforts for shark populations. Organizers: Sebastián Hernández & Randall Arauz. Ghost Gear Workshop Room: PL 105 (Villa 2), 1 - 5 pm Lost, discarded or abandoned fishing gear (also referred to as ghost gear) is an important threat to sea turtles in the Indian Ocean. The UN estimates around 640,000 tons of fishing gear are lost globally each year. While efforts are in place to try to quantify and stem the effects of ghost gear within various parts of the world, gaps in data on quantity and type of gear lost and its effects on marine life still exist in the Indian Ocean. The transboundary nature of ghost gear means that turtle habitats are often encroached on and reports of turtle entanglements are frequently reported throughout the Indian Ocean. This workshop will explore the need for a collaborative approach to tackle this problem. Currently the Olive Ridley Project [as part of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI)] is working toward quantifying the amount of gear lost and developing best practices for ghost gear removal and recycling. The workshop will teach standardized data collection protocols developed by ORP and the IUCN detailing how to record data on ghost gear and entangled turtles. The session will also look into fisher surveys that can be used to understand why gear is lost in the first place, in order to see gaps in data and identify problematic areas. The session will end with a series of discussions on how to fine tune data recorded to accommodate various fisheries found in the region. Workshop participants will be invited to discuss their experience with ghost gear and sea turtle entanglements.
