UGUST 2011 10th-27th A Welcome 2011 Welcome to the 2011 Melbourne School Strings and Bands Festival. Now in its twenty-third year, the Festival has become an integral part of the school music calendar for many schools in Victoria and interstate. The Festival aims to provide opportunities for students to perform in outstanding performance venues and to be adjudicated by highly experienced and knowledgeable music educators. With the emphasis on learning and process, a performance at the Festival gives ensemble directors and their students an opportunity to reflect and learn for the future. This year, with over 340 ensembles performing over eighteen days at Monash University’s Robert Blackwood Concert Hall and School of Music Auditorium, we celebrate another year of outstanding performances and amazing learning experiences. In 2011, our special guests on the adjudicating panel are: Mr Monte Mumford, Chair of Adjudicators - Concert Band – recently returned from Northwestern College, Minnesota - USA; Ms. Jemima Bunn Adjudicator of Training & Novice Concert Band – ABODA National President; Mr Tim Davies, Chair of Adjudicators – Jazz Ensembles, Los Angeles - USA; Ms. Sandra Dackow, Chair of Adjudicators - String Ensemble, Pennsylvania USA. This experienced team of adjudicators will be supported by a panel of local music educators dedicated to supporting the growth of instrumental and ensemble music, and furthering the standards of performance for all schools and in the community. He loved his instrument so much that he wrote and dedicated a special piece of music to it. His “Dance of the Goblins” showcases the talents of a world-class performer. Musicians agree that this piece can only be mastered by the very best. Just as Bazzini entranced audiences of his time, these instruments will motivate the young artist of today to do the same! Tim Davies - Jazz Ensembles Chief Adjudcator Not just essential for today, but for a lifetime. Grammy nominated Composer, Arranger and Band Leader Tim Davies first dreamt of leading his own big band when he was twelve, inspired by a cassette of Australia’s Daly-Wilson Big Band—a dream realized in 1998, when he formed his first band in Melbourne. Since 2000, Davies has based his big band in Los Angeles, featuring top session and touring players. The band's first record, “Epic”, was released in 2002 and a new album, “Dialmentia”, came out in May 2009. Grounded in the traditional, his music adds elements of classical, rock, metal and hip hop, creating a blend that is truly unique. Davies' big band music is now played all over the world and he is often commissioned. In 2010 Davies writing was recognized with a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition for the piece “Counting to Infinitiy”. When not writing for or leading the band, Davies has found his niche working as an arranger, orchestrator and conductor in Hollywood. With the assistance of several grants, Davies moved to Los Angeles in 1998 to study at the University of Southern California. His first professional break came after a lesson with band leader and arranger John Clayton. Clayton invited Davies to assist him for his 3 years as the Director of Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to his jazz work, a large part of his time is spent orchestrating and arranging music for Film and Television. Recent orchestration highlights include the TV shows Pushing Daisies, Glee, The Event and No Ordinary Family and the films Death Race, Australia, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Wolfman and Sex and the City 2. Davies has written much concert music and is a represented composer of the Australian Music Centre. He frequently returns for concerts and has given masterclasses and lectures at all of the major Australian East Coast music schools. He has recently joined the board of “Education Through Music”, a non-profit that provides music lessons in schools that do not have music programs.
