Your racquet strings should be looking straight to the target that you are aiming to hit. Make sure to continue to accelerate and follow through with your swing. If the ball is still going close to the middle of the court, make sure to exaggerate on how much outside the ball you will hit your next shot. Go back and forth a few times to find your range. Enjoy your new shot! AVILA CHARITY TENNIS TOURNAMENT PRO-AM Four teams of three amateurs and one tennis pro competed in the 2013 ACTT Pro-Am. Four team owners had the right to invite two more players to form a team. The format was a round robin with all teams playing each other once for placement into the semi-finals. Winners of the semi-finals would meet up in the final match. All matches were very competitive, some going to tie-breakers to decide the winners. Is it possible for this vital organ, sustainer of life, ten ounce blood pumping muscle to influence emotions and weight loss? Science continues to prove that your heart sends messages to your brain and body. The fluctuation of daily emotions can fill or deplete our “love tank”. When we experience positive emotions, we're satisfied, at least momentarily. When situations or circumstances are undesirable, we find ourselves disheartened and stressed, yearning for consoling or nurturing. Many times we seek out temporary rewards to satisfy our brain’s happy hormone “dopamine”. That’s where chocolate or your favorite tasty treat comes in. The brain memorizes that activity as satisfying, even if it’s only short lived. This gives some explanation to the challenges we face in managing our healthy habits. Your brain thinks logically, (hopefully anyway) while your heart’s intelligence is based on emotion. So should you listen to your HEART? Looking deep into the chambers of your heart can help you overcome the deceitfulness of temporary pleasures robbing you of what you really want. Recognizing triggers and behavioral patterns is the first step in reprogramming the mind body response to seeking healthy pathways attaining your heart’s true desires. He hit an 8-iron in the jar from 140 yards in the face of Jim Miller, Mark Vasu, and Tom Cummings. It only took 3 days from the grand re-opening! Not to be upstaged by the Donelan eagle, Mark Vasu turned in a 69 to set the early course record from the blue tees and win the blue tee game! The 13th hole opened itself up for a rare group to beat it. Mark Vasu made an eagle 2, Jim Miller made 3, Chris Lau made 3, and Mike Sierra made 3. That is an eagle and 3 birdies on #13 in the same group? Crazy! Oh, there was a 5th player - Tom Johnson tended the flag! Matt Cooney currently holds 2 course records at Avila- a 65 from the blue tee, and a 68 from the gold tees. The 68 is the one we really recognize, so the challenge is there! Many of our staple events are in the spring (Los Caballeros, Señoras, Club Championship, Reeves BMW to name a few), and none of these events have been contested on the new turf. We are really excited to see many members and guests reactions that haven’t been here yet to enjoy the new playing conditions. We have added some new lines of merchandise for 2014. Peter Millar and Southern Tide are the two biggest additions, and the holiday sale proved that they are in demand! Please stop by if you haven’t already to see some of our new apparel. In addition, we have a nice Tampa Bay Rays collection coming from Nike in late February. We will also provide some great Buccaneers gear late summer, and hopefully Lovie Smith and the new regime fire some of you up for Buccaneer football? Many companies are releasing their new hard good collections at the PGA Show. We are very fortunate to have our Multi-Vendor Demo Day on February 15th. This will give all of our members a chance to hit equipment from different vendors and really see which equipment suits them best. I strongly encourage you to come out for Demo Day and give it a try! I hope everyone has a great 2014, and if you ever need anything from a golf end, please stop by as my office is always open! Since our re-opening, you may have noticed a difference in how we have been maintaining our bunkers. In the past, we hand raked each bunker and had to make sure all 52 bunkers were consistent for play. We found this very challenging and noticed an inconsistency and a hard pan develop much higher to the surface than what we were hoping for. Our solution came by using a SandPro. The SandPro allows us to apply a consistent down pressure through all the bunkers so we know the right amount of sand disruption to produce overall consistent bunkers. Constantly raking at a certain depth, however, will create a hard pan. On top of the hard pan getting the Sandpro into the bunker can damage the bunker face. To offset this effect, we will periodically till up the sand by lowering the depth from 1in to 3in and remove any hard pan that has developed. To minimize the bunker edge damage we find the easiest way into the bunkers, but for the tricky ones we have made a matte that lets the SandPro in and out while reducing damage to the bunker face. This process will not disrupt any play, but you may notice the bunkers looking “fluffy” for a couple days, depending on the weather. So when you’re out on the course playing, remember to take that extra step to rake the bunker--keeping it consistent and enjoyable for everyone. Please don’t forget to keep up with our golf maintenance blog at avilaturf.blogspot.com for more up to date maintenance information. While these efforts are well intended when conceived, a variety of studies suggest that 40% of us will lose motivation within the first month; and over 50% will return to old habits within three months. By the time you’re reading this article, we’ll be right in between those two milestones with an opportunity to either celebrate some success or get back on track. In sports, non-compliance to new habits typically isn’t a conscious resistance to change; rather, athletes simply forget their new ambitions as external demands take precedence. A simple but effective remedy is learning to ask yourself the right question: What did I do well (today)? The key here is to focus on the positive—those actions that reinforce behaviors we want to happen. For golfers who really struggle with their attitude, we might ask that question after every shot to suppress negative distractions. As things improve, the frequency can scale back to each hole or side or round. The beauty of this technique is that it’s an efficient fix that can apply to any endeavor or situation. Focusing on the positive shouldn’t be confused with denying problems. There are times to assess weaknesses and strategize improvement plans. At this time of the year, my hope is that you take the time to ask the right questions!
