AOF/AOHT STUDENTS IN CENTRAL PARK, NYC 2009
The purpose of our Academy of Finance is to
better prepare students in business and
finance industry-specific knowledge and skills
for greater success in pursuing related careers
or continuing their post secondary education.
The Academy of Finance is a specialized
program for high school students who are
interested in a career in the financial services
industry. It consists of courses taught by
business education teachers who have
received specialized training. A certificate of
Financial Studies from the Texas Council of
Economic Education will be awarded to each
student upon the successful completion of the
courses and a paid internship in a financial
setting.
Community Support
The community, employers and local colleges
assist the Academy in any of the following
ways:
• Serve as a business partner
• Provide mentorship, job shadowing and/or
study trip opportunities
• Provide 160-hour internships
• Enhance curriculum by serving as an
industry resource or guest speaker
• Provide financial support
Course Components
• BCIS I (Microsoft Office) – 1 cr.
• Accounting I - 1 cr.
• Financial Management - ½ cr.
• Internship (160 hours)
• Students will choose one of the following
courses:
• Banking & Financial Systems - ½ cr.

Financial Curriculum

intensive in business and economic principles
that gives a broad picture of the financial
services industry.
Industry-specific Staff Development
The Texas Council of Economic Education
(TCEE) offers opportunities for the AOF
instructors to enhance their financial services
industry and technological training. TCEE
offers annual staff development workshops
and seminars presented by educators and
business representatives.
Advisory Board
The SBISD Academy of Finance is supported
by an Advisory Board composed of financial
services industry professionals, teachers,
parents and community partners. The SBISD
Academy of Finance Advisory Board assists
students in achieving career and educational
goals.
Internships
A key feature of the SBISD Academy Of
Finance is a structured, supervised,
internship that enhances classroom learning
by providing a "real-world" context in which
the student can apply knowledge learned in
the classroom. Each eligible AOF student is
required to complete an internship with an
industry partner before the end of the
senior year. The SBISD AOF Advisory Board
and teachers assist in obtaining internships,
but the final responsibility for obtaining
employment rests with the student.
Senior Trip
Senior students have the opportunity go to
New York City and tour the Financial District,
see a Broadway show and many points of
interest.
