The Academy of Finance is a specialized program for high school students who are interested in a career in the financial services industry. It consists of courses taught by business education teachers who have received specialized training. A certificate of Financial Studies from the Texas Council of Economic Education will be awarded to each student upon the successful completion of the courses and a paid internship in a financial setting. Community Support The community, employers and local colleges assist the Academy in any of the following ways: • Serve as a business partner • Provide mentorship, job shadowing and/or study trip opportunities • Provide 160-hour internships • Enhance curriculum by serving as an industry resource or guest speaker • Provide financial support Course Components • BCIS I (Microsoft Office) – 1 cr. • Accounting I - 1 cr. • Financial Management - ½ cr. • Internship (160 hours) • Students will choose one of the following courses: • Banking & Financial Systems - ½ cr. • Business Law – ½ cr. • International Business - ½ cr. • International Marketing – ½ cr. Financial Curriculum Students follow a curriculum sequence intensive in business and economic principles that gives a broad picture of the financial services industry. Industry-specific Staff Development The Texas Council of Economic Education (TCEE) offers opportunities for the AOF instructors to enhance their financial services industry and technological training. TCEE offers annual staff development workshops and seminars presented by educators and business representatives. Advisory Board The SBISD Academy of Finance is supported by an Advisory Board composed of financial services industry professionals, teachers, parents and community partners. The SBISD Academy of Finance Advisory Board assists students in achieving career and educational goals. Internships A key feature of the SBISD Academy Of Finance is a structured, supervised, internship that enhances classroom learning by providing a "real-world" context in which the student can apply knowledge learned in the classroom. Each eligible AOF student is required to complete an internship with an industry partner before the end of the senior year. The SBISD AOF Advisory Board and teachers assist in obtaining internships, but the final responsibility for obtaining employment rests with the student. Senior Trip Senior students have the opportunity go to New York City and tour the Financial District, see a Broadway show and many points of interest. Westside Tennis Club HIRE SBISD AOF INTERNS Spring Branch Academy of Finance Interns Seeking Summer Internships in Financial Services Nearly 100 Spring Branch ISD Academy of Finance high school students are eager to begin the internship component of their career education program this summer. These students have learned the fundamentals of financial services through their coursework; they are motivated, eager, and ready to learn “on-site.” THE BASICS • Students may be assigned to one department or rotated through several areas • Interns have an Academy supervisor plus an on-site company supervisor • Students are pre-screened by school for students between their junior and senior years of high school • Paid at or above minimum wage; costs per 8-week internship range from $1,300 to $2,000 ($8 - $12 an hour) ........ We Want You! workplace readiness • Help high school students “learn and earn” • Receive local and national recognition • Promote workforce diversity • Develop a new employee pipeline • Access an on-call workforce • Take advantage of potential tax benefits • Earn potential CRA credit • Improve employee morale • Full or part-time summer employment (6-8 weeks during June and July)for PARENTS..... Join the Parent Booster Club and assist the local campus coordinators in making each of the Academies provide the best possible experience for our students.
