MONTEREY COUNTY PEACE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION
Message from the President...
On Friday, October 24th, I had both the honor and privilege to attend the
unveiling to the Sheriff’s Department memorial. It was truly an inspiring
memorial to the fallen men and women of the Sheriff’s Department.
Having served with two of these fallen deputies, it was an even more
important reason that I attend.
Throughout the memorial, I thought of those we had lost from the Sheriff’s
Department, but it also allowed me to think of the many officers
throughout our country who have given the ultimate sacrifice. I knew
some of them, but many I did not. But the memorial made the simple
point to me that, regardless if we knew them or not, we will honor and
remember them always.
During the program, I thought of Deputies Bob Shaw and Tony Olsen. I
tried to recall the calls we responded to, conversations we had and laughs
we shared. Unfortunately with time, memories fade and so do my
recollections that I had with these fine men. However, I know that on
any given day, I can go to the Sheriff’s Department and view the memorial.
I can see their names and will always remember their faces.
As it was appropriately stated during the memorial, we may be gone one
day, but we will never forget those who had given their lives to make our
community a safer place to live.
To Sheriff Miller, the volunteers of the Sheriff’s Department, and the
community members who volunteered their time and money, I commend
you all.
Sincerely,
Fred Garcia

MARINA PD MOURNS K-9
It is with great sadness that the Marina Police Department
announces the loss of Thunder – one of our beloved K-9.
Thunder was euthanized today due to a progressive spinal
condition that was causing paralysis and extreme pain.
Thunder, who had been with the Marina Police Department since 2007, was a key element in the arrest of several
felons. Officer Moreno and Thunder made up one of the
greatest K-9 teams found in the tri-county areas.
Thanks to their diligent work, bank robbers, violent armed
felons, drug dealers, and other law breaking individuals,
have been apprehended and secured to the justice system.
Thunder, who is the first Marina Police K-9 to pass while
on active duty, will be greatly missed.
R.I.P. Thunder. Thank you for your service!!!
MARINA K-9 UNIT FUNDRAISER
Since the death of Marina Police Department K9 Thunder, many residents and other dog lovers have expressed support
to create a permanent memorial recognizing this amazing dog’s contribution to public safety in our community. We
truly appreciate all of the support we have been receiving from our wonderful community.
The residents of Marina historically have been strong supporters of the police department’s K9 program. Unfortunately,
Thunder’s unexpected death has created a void in the unit and replacing him has caused a budgetary challenge. Acquiring
a new dog to fill Thunder’s absence will cost the police department $10,000-$16,000. The police department’s K9
program is supported by the City’s general fund budget, but often relies on community donations, and fundraisers to
offset the costs associated with operating and maintaining the unit.
The Marina Police Department, in association with the MARINA FOUNDATION, is sponsoring a fundraiser to support
our K9 unit. We encourage our great supporters to help us with this endeavor. The MARINA FOUNDATION kicked
off the fundraiser by making the first donation (THANK YOU).
The MARINA FOUNDATION website is located at http://www.themarinafoundation.org/
As stated on their website: The Marina Foundation has been asked to work with the Marina Police Department to help
raise the funds needed to purchase a new dog, provide certification training for the dog and its handler, purchase
necessary equipment, and to assist with providing ongoing care for our retired K9’s. You can help by donating online
at http://www.themarinafoundation.org/donate (pull down tab on right) or by sending a check by mail made payable
to: The Marina Foundation. Please include Marina PD K-9 Unit on the subject line. Thank you.
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR CONTINUOUS SUPPORT!!!

Executive Director’s Note . . .
October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
As a 3 year survivor,
I’d like to remind everyone to do self checks - mammograms for women are
important as well. It’s rare, but men also have been known to have breast
cancer. Today (and each new day) I celebrate my life, remember those who
have passed away from cancer, and continue to fight to find a cure.
On December 10, 2014, District Attorney Dean Flippo and his crew of prep
cooks and cooks will be cooking up Cioppino and Spaghetti for the Annual Dinner/Feed. They’ll
be using the Cioppino recipe from long-time cooks, Benny Cooper and Bill Gullett. This year’s
dinner will once again be held at the Marina American Legion Post 694. The annual donations
collected and the Cioppino and Spaghetti Feed will go directly to the Monterey County Sheriff’s
Memorial.
Flyers are included in this newsletter for your information. Reservations are requested.
Members of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department, District Attorney’s Office and Federal
Bureau of Investigations will be honored at the December 10th dinner. We hope you will come
and enjoy the Cioppino & Spaghetti Feed with us for some family time and camaraderie with
other MCPOA members, as well as meet some new members.
Don’t forget - the MCPOA Annual Peace Officer of the Year Awards Dinner is set for Saturday,
February 28, 2015, at the Embassy Suites in Seaside! Yes, it’s on a Saturday and will start earlier
than before. MCPOA will honor an individual(s) from a Small and Large Agency. We’re hoping to
get all the law enforcement agencies in Monterey County to participate to honor one of their
own.
See Y’all soon!

BEFORE YOU PURCHASE: If you are currently enrolled in a health maintenance organization (HMO) or other health insurance,
the benefits provided by an Ambulance Plan may duplicate the benefits provided by your HMO or other health insurance. If you
have a question regarding whether your HMO or other health insurance offers benefits for ambulance services, you should contact
that other company directly.
WARNING! CALSTAR’s Membership Program is not an insurance program. It will not compensate or reimburse another
ambulance company that provides emergency transportation to you or your family. This may occur when the 911 Emergency
System has independently determined that another could provide more expeditious service or is next in the rotation to receive a
call. This might also occur when CALSTAR is unable to perform within a medically appropriate timeframe due to severe weather,
a maintenance issue or being committed to another call.
For complaints regarding CALSTAR’s Membership Program, first attempt to call the plan at 1-888-207-LIFE (5433). If CALSTAR
fails to resolve the complaint to your satisfaction, contact the Department of Managed Health Care at 1-800-400-0815. The
Department’s Website is: http://www.dmhc.ca.gov. You may obtain complaint forms and instructions online. CALSTAR is
operating pursuant to an exemption from the Knox-Keene Health Care Service Plan Act of 1975 (Health and Safety Code Section
1340 et seq.).
