the heroism and achievements of the people, events, and our nation’s ethnic heritage, the students will
explore the life of how one person can change history through peace and love. After watching the (Angel)
Discovery Education Video Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (08:00) before
Martin Luther King Day is celebrated, the class will highlight some of the major events that happened in his
life. (See history snapshot for teachers history review) Students will learn why we honor Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Students will identify key words in Dr. King's teachings on nonviolence. (Peace, Love, Freedom,
Together and Dream)
Closure: As you wrap up this lesson, have discussions how we can help make peace and love a reality and
how this honors Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy. Then take a moment to relate Dr. King’s “Big Words” to our
own lives and how they affect the choices we make each day. Most importantly reflect how why we as a
nation celebrate people and events in our history.

HOW AND WHY DO WE HONOR
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR?
"His big words are alive for us today."
Goal:

Celebrating people and their accomplishments as national holidays are ways for students
to learn about our history. Through strong character traits that Dr. Martin Luther King
exhibited students will learn about his history while identifying with a personal “Big Word”
that they admire and hope to develop. The students will make a journal which encourages
students to make connections between themselves and Martin Luther King, Jr. by
providing space for students to write and draw information about them after
corresponding information about Dr. King provided on the printout.
Materials: Dr. Martin Luther King Journal Template, Student Activity Sheet (Pick a
Big Word) printed for each student, pencils, crayons/colored pencils.
Procedure:
1. Introduce Character Trait Chart with students; explain that they will be introduced to the
famous explorer Christopher Columbus who had these traits.
2. Watch Discovery Education Video Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. (08:00). Stop and discuss interesting points (Big Words)
3. Hand out Student Activity Sheet (Pick a Big Word), review the activity sheet and record
ideas on the board for students to reference when they complete in small groups
4. Hand out Journals to the students (these look nice if they are bound with combs and use
card stock for the cover and back page.) Begin journal template which encourages
students to make connections between themselves and Martin Luther King, Jr. by
providing space for students to write and draw information about them after
corresponding information about Dr. King provided in the video and classroom
discussion.
5. You may also use the Hot-Dok Higher Order questions (at the bottom of this document)

Hurt Feeling and Sadness
Martin Luther King, Jr. and A.D. were hurt
when their white friends couldn't play with them
anymore. At that time in the United States, there
were places where black children and white
children couldn't go to school together and were
not even allowed to play together or be friends.
That made Martin very sad.

In addition to exhibiting level 3
performance, the student
responses demonstrate in-depth
inferences and applications that
go beyond what was taught in
class.
The student’s responses indicate
no major errors or omissions
regarding any of the information
and/or processes taught in class.
The student’s indicate errors or
incomplete knowledge of the
information and/or processes;
however they do not indicate
major errors or omissions
relative to simpler details and
processes.
The student provides responses
that indicate a distinct lack of
understanding of the knowledge.
However with help, the student
demonstrates partial
understanding of some of the
knowledge.
The student provides little or no
