The event was held at Pheasant Run Resort, a large property on a golf course. That golf course was the venue for another beautiful Parade Concours d’ Elegance. There will be lots of pictures available to see soon and more on Parade Before heading to Parade we had a very successful autocross with our friends from the San Gabriel Valley Region. They are a great group to work with and we are hoping to do more events together soon. The autocross was brilliantly produced by event masters Skip Carter and Robert Friedman. They did a very good job of fitting all the pieces together and they had a terrific support team. The autocross was held on a huge piece of payment at the Pomona Fairgrounds. Robert Friedman (SGV) and our own CDI Mike Mulligan came up with a crowd pleasing 1.5 mile 2 minute track design. We were thrilled to have 3 sponsors for the Pomona Fairplex even. Lennie Yee from Pacific Porsche brought out a wonderful array of Porsche merchandise, SGV Region member Loren Beggs and 911 Design were on hand and Loren also brought a couple of gorgeous race cars and I think he had a fun day on the track. Also L.A. Dismantlers joined us and GPX member and L.A. Dismantler's employee, Efren Bernal, came in first in his class in his 1990 964. L.A. Dismantlers a great resource for 911s, Boxsters and Caymans – see their ad in the Circuit. The following link is a You Tube video of Steve Abbott doing our autocross in his Corvette – it is a very cool little video that gives you a 6 great feel for driving the track. It is posted on our website. http://www. grandprixregion.com/ GPX%20Photo%20Gallery. html. Well, it turns out that we haven’t been paying taxes to our governments both state and federal and it seems that we probably should have. Fortunately our new elected Treasurer is getting us back on track. Please see the Board Resolution in this issue of the Circuit. We are going to try out MotorsportReg.com to register our October 4th Day Away from Work at Streets of Willow. There are many advantages to using this extremely comprehensive service, so we will give it a try. Please see the event flyer in this Circuit. There are a couple of tours coming up - a visit to the Mullen Museum -with just a few spaces left In September there is a get away weekend tour to Mammouth. Marty and Brita Goldsmith are the tour masters - see their contact information in the this issue of the Circuit. Our next breakfast is at Frisco's on August 7th. the address is on the inside back cover. Come on out and say hi. July 2010 Skip Carter Have we been busy? You betcha. Just look inside. Your region has been busy and has a lot more on the calendar. If you're not enjoying the wide variety of events GPX and the other PCA regions in Southern California offer, it's time to come out and play. Sleazy Dog Construction On the Cover... You've all heard the Porsche slogan "It's not the cars, it's the people." Well, another great example of this occured at our Buttonwillow Club Race in May. Leamon Stansell's very low 914 tore a frront corner off the body work Saturday afternoon. A whole host of GPX member jumped in and helped Leamon repair the damage. Suesan Way located a shop that could sell a fiberglass repair kit. Arturo Chaparro drove quite a distance to get the kit. Leamon and several others made the basic repair using pop rivets and other handy items "laying" around, and Allan Rosenberg did the friberglass repair. And, while we were at it, someone came up with a longtime problem Leamon had with an oil tank. Next time you see Leamon's car, notice the significant number of signatures on the hood. Region president Suesan Way is shown with Leamon. Skip Carter took the photo. If you are not receiving monthly emails from the Grand Prix Region, it is because we do not have your address. Several locations were considered, and after much inventigation, the Lakewood Country Club was selected. Our long term members will remember that this is NOT the first time Lakewood has hosted us. Concours Chair Dal Lee and his team did a fabulous job, as you can see from the photos, and the Lakewood Country Club could not have treated us better. It was great to have the cars back on lawn. The elegant grounds and mature trees created a very comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. It was also quite a treat having an indoors, sit down lunch. The food was excellent, and the white linen didn't hurt. Many thanks to both our Grand Prix Region team and Lakewood staff for helping create such a successful event. Claude Mi Ruben Archilla & Illery Gomez Another side of the coin was the participants and the cars. Dal decided to honor the 356, and the 356 Club showed up in force. Next year (2011) will feature early 911s and 2012 (you guessed it), the 912. A team of 23 judges volunteered their time, and the day went off very smoothly. Sally Carre Pacific Porsche sponsored us. Parts Manager Lennie Yee and other employees were there under a tent with some great values from the parts department. Many thanks to Mike Sullivan's Pacific Porsche. Also present was Mike Newlon, a local PCA member who is writing a series of books on historic highways. His first two books, U.S. 95 and U.S. 395 were available. Chuck Bartron and his award winning Turbo Mike Newlon's display included his well traveled 912 and books on t historic U.S. highway You probably noticed the aerial shot of our Concours site (above). Lars Fallman, maintenance manager for nearby LA Helicopters, arranged for me to take this shot. Lars also entered his 944 Turbo in the Concours, and went home with a trophy. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a truly great day. Proceeds from this raffle benefit Grand Prix Region's fundraising projects for Long Beach's Children's Dental Health Clinic and ASUDEC (Africa's Sustainable Development Council). Lucky winners were Steve Firshein and David Carlson. Making the presentations at our June Breakfast Club were region president, Suesan Way and her assistant, Spencer Lee. Thank you to Pacific Porsche and everyone who participated in this event. MINUTES OF SPECIAL BOARD MEETING HELD JUNE 5, 2010 Background: On May 26, 2010, President Way notified all board members by e-mail that Treasurer Schill had discovered that GPX had not filed income tax returns (Federal or State) for years 2006 onward. We also were found not to have Federal status as a non-profit corporation. He had consulted with competent legal and accounting professionals, and with appropriate staff at PCA headquarters. They all advised to proceed to remedy these omissions as quickly as possible. Therefore President Way called for a special meeting of the Board to be held after the regular Board meeting on June 5, 2010. Meanwhile Treasurer Schill would develop further information concerning actions to be taken, as well as developing estimates of our potential liabilities and costs for professional services. The special meeting convened at 1200 at the home of Secretary Goldsmith. Present were President Way, Secretary Goldsmith, Treasurer Schill, and Directors Hofsess, Mitchell and Carter. Vice-president Mills was aware of the meeting and its purpose but could not be present. Treasurer Schill outlined the situation, and provided two items for consideration. The first was an estimate of our financial exposure. The estimates can be summarized as follows: Federal tax, interest, and penalties, $5000; State tax, penalty, late fees, $265; attorney fees, $425; CPA fees for analysis and return prep for four years, $2150; total $7840. Treasurer Schill then presented a draft resolution which outlined the present situation and which directed and authorized the actions he would need to take to resolve our problems. 10 At this point, Director Carter expressed an opinion that the meeting we were having was improperly called, no notice having been given to the general membership, and thus was illegal. After discussion, it was realized that we had with us neither a copy of State law nor our own by-laws, and a determination could not be made at that time. Director Carter withdrew from the meeting, having an appointment at the Fairplex concerning our forthcoming Autocross. As written, the resolution offered by the Treasurer could not be passed, so appropriate modifications were made. The Board then decided to vote on the resolution, with the understanding that if this meeting was found to be improperly held, another meeting, properly configured, would be necessary to pass binding action. If this meeting is found to comply with laws and the by-laws, then the resolution would stand. The meeting adjourned at 1330. On Monday, June 7 Treasurer Schill provided the attorney with our by-laws, and the attorney gave him a copy of the pertinent State law. The attorney concluded that the meeting as held complied with both. Therefore the resolution as passed is appropriate. The resolution is as follows: (continued on page 30) July 2010 A GPX Tour to Mammoth & the Eastern Sierra September 11-13 If you have never visited the Eastern Sierra, you have missed a very special place. If you have always driven there without leaving Highway 395, you have missed a lot of special places! This tour will leave Long Beach and follow freeways through the Cajon Pass. and up 395, pausing at Kramer's Junction for refreshment. The first sightseeing stop will be the old mining town of Randsberg. After that we cross a patch of desert to visit Red Rock Canyon State Park. Passing by some of the volcanic country near Little Lake, we press on to lunch at Olancha. We may detour to Keeler, a picturesque mining community on our way to Lone Pine and Manzanar. From there we will enjoy the spectacular Owens Valley scenery on our way to Mammoth Lakes. This famous mountain resort town has all the amenities. We have a block of rooms reserved at the Quality Inn, right on Main Street in the middle of town. We will have group dinners (locations TBD) on Saturday and Sunday nights. On Sunday, we have planned a tour to include the famous Mono Lake, a look at Tioga Pass, and perhaps a side trip to the preserved ghost town of Bodie. Monday options: You can leave early or stay for the Mammoth Mountain Gondola to the top of the peak for a spectacular view over the Minarets and San Joaquin River Canyon or go to Mammoth Crest for a flat, but spectacular walk along the ridge, and continue to Red's Meadow and the Devil's Postpile. You cannot run out of things to do at Mammoth! To participate, do two things. First call the Quality Inn (760) 934-5114 and ask for the GPX Porsche Club special rate $99 per night. Then let Marty Goldsmith know that you have signed up (562) 494-6350 or [email protected] so he can keep you up to date on details. Sign up early - that weekend is a busy one in Mammoth! 11 Grand Prix Region's 1st PCA Club Race by Skip Carter, GPX Performance Driving Chair photos by Greg Phillips & Skip Carter On May 22 & 23, the Grand Prix Region teamed up with the Golden Gate Region from the San Francisco Bay area, and put on the first PCA Club Race for GPX. The event was held at Buttonwillow Race Park near Bakersfield. The weather was very comfortable and, several times, I just needed to stop and look at how beautiful the cloud formations were over the Temblor mountain range to the west. In addition to the Club Race, Drivers Ed and Time Trial groups also ran. While the Time Trial requires minimum driver qualifications, the Drivers Ed (DE) provides a great opportunity for "first timers" as well as experienced drivers to develop their driving skills. For several, this was their first performance driving event. In addition to a mandatory "Ground School" on Friday afternoon, novices are assigned an instructor to work with them throughout the weekend. For many people, driving a Porsche can be an intimidating experience. Others just want an opportunity to "see what it can do." For both, we create a safe environment to learn about car control and to get more comfortable with your Porsche. I can't count the number of people who, after one or more performance driving events, have commented about how much safer they feel driving on the street, how much more they "see" while driving, how confident and better equipped they are to handle a driving emergency, and how much more relaxed and comfortable they are on the street. That, together with our amazing safety record, makes it very easy for me to keep producing these events. Many, many thanks to our event sponsor, Circle Porsche in Long Beach. I can't tell you how important it is to let our sponsors know how much we appreciate their support and, the best way we can show our appreciation is for YOU to use their services. Buttonwillow has great facilities. The BEST snack bar I've seen at a track, air conditioning, plenty of shade and meeting rooms, a gift shop, tire services, ice, water and more. And, in case I didn't mention it, an extremely fun race track. We'll be back again next year, so watch The Circuit calendar for this and many other fun events. As usual, your board and chairs are working hard to create a variety of fun and interesting events for all of us. Whether you take advantage of it or not is up to you. Don't miss out on all the fun!!! Life's too short... It was quickly determined that his weekend was done unless a repair could be made. Mugs and Rochelle Booth at the track map With little fanfare, several GPX members standing around put their heads together. Pop rivets came out, Suesan located a fiberglass repair kit about 20 miles away, Arturo Chaparro picked it up, Michael Dolphin and several others lent a hand, Allan Rosenberg knew how to work fiberglass and, by Sunday morning Leamon was back on the track. Not only did he get the fender fixed, but as people drifted by, another problem with a nagging oil reservoir problem was analyzed and a simple repair solved the problem. This is the kind of camaraderie I've come to expect at see at PCA events, and I've rarely been disappointed. The overall lack of sunshine still resulted in a huge membership turnout at Frisco’s Diner in Long Beach. Of those in attendance, two of our more celebrated and decorated couples were there: Jack and Virginia Case, charter members of PCA (1955), and John and Patty Reilly who, as of this month, have amassed a whopping total of 44 years of membership. If my math serves me correctly, that totals 99 years of Porsche Club of America membership. That, my friends, truly deserves our acknowledgment. Congratulations to both of our esteemed couples. At the meeting, our President, Suesan Way, presented David Carlson of the Orange Coast Region, and Steve Firshein of the Grand Prix Region, their RS Spyder Watch packages. The packages were donated by Pacific Porshce for our Fundraising Raffle. They included a Porsche RS Spyder watch, two RS Spyder models and a limited editon RS Spyder book. Monies raised will go to our two charities, ASUDEC (Africa's Sustianable Development Council) and Long Beach's Children's Dental Health Clinic. The drawing was held at our recent Lakewood Country Club Concours. The prize packages were truly magnificent. Besides the great food and service always provided by Frisco's, we heard from speakers on subjects from the Orange Coast Region Concours, the Glockler Porsche (a pre-cursor of the 550 Spyder), a Swiss Coach built Beutler Porsche Convertible, the upcoming Del Mar Concours (September), and the July 27th Fairplex Autocross produced by both GPX and San Gabriel Valley Regions. Many are familiar with Porsche's overwhelming success in the Targa Florio. Some may know of Sterling Moss and Denis Jenkinson's epic drive in a 300SLR Mercedes in the 1955 Mille Miglia, or the classic headlightsoff drive of Nuvolari in 1930. Very few think of Porsche in connection with the Mille, but it turns out that there is some very significant history. It was in the Mille that Porsches first evolved from street cars to race, (or more accurately, dual purpose cars). In the waning days of the Mille Miglia (1952-1957), Porsches (except for the 550 Spyder introduced in '54) really were NOT race cars. They were elegant, expensive, street cars that were raced, and won. Porsche & Mille Miglia is a bilingual book, Italian and English. It begins with a fascinating description of three (count 'em, three) conflicting explanations of how Porsche got into racing at the 1951 Le Mans. It is fascinating reading for anyone interested in early Porsche racing history. The key element is that Porsche did indeed enter Le Mans in June 1951, which was the first official race entry of a Porsche badged car, and the first post-war entry of a German car (with German drivers in a European race). Alert readers may wonder about the '49 and '50 entries in the "Copa de'Oro" in Italy. Those were special cars designed (by Porsche on VW Chassis) for the Berlin-Rome race of 1939 (never held), and were not really Porsches). Porsche involvement in the Mille Miglia began in 1952 with six cars entered in the 1100cc and 1500cc classes. The 1100 cc car of von Frankenberg and Weiselmann (journalists) dropped out in Rome (a bit over half way), but Porsche took 1st in the 1100cc class, and 1,2 & 3 in the 1500 class. Not bad for German cars in what had been traditionally been considered an Italian event since its establishment in 1927. This book is nothing like the first-person narrative Denis Jenkinson wrote of his Mille Miglia ride with Sterling 20 Moss. This is a profusely illustrated, historic report on the entries and successes of Porsches from 1952 through the end of the Mille (the 24th running) in 1957. Much more than a tabulation of race results, it provides extensive coverage of Porsche drivers, the evolution of the design of the cars and engines, issues of race logistics, and the off track competition (protests and their adjudication). Even the famous incident between Hans Hermann and the grade crossing barrier is mentioned. Sometimes confusing, but informative overall, are the many references to Porsche (and other car) performances in other events each year. Six chapters give comprehensive coverage of the individual years, a seventh serves as an historical summary of the results of every Porsche entered in every class of each of the 6 years. Unfortunately, there is no summary of which entries were by the factory, and which (the majority this reviewer would guess) entered by individual car owners. It is not really a page turner and, indeed, half of the text on the 140 9.5x10.5 inch pages is in Italian (Greek to me). But the English text appears to be complete, and the pictures, of course, are poly-lingual (with bi-lingual captions). Mostly from Italian sources, the pictures themselves are refreshingly different from the usual selections from the Porsche Archives. All in all, Porsche & Mille Miglia gives a fascinating insight into the early days of Porsches as race cars, cars that could (and were) driven to the races, raced, and driven home. The days of racing street legal cars on real streets are gone for ever. That bygone era can only be experienced (or re-lived) through books such as this one. July 2010 Board Meeting Notes — June 5 Marty Goldsmith, Secretary President Suesan Way called the meeting to order at Frisco's at 1045. Other board members present were Marty Goldsmith, Greg Schill, Hazel Hofsess, Jimmie Mitchell and Skip Carter. Members present were Frank Medrano, Carlos chang, Jack and Ginny Case, Norma Dawson, John and Patty Reilly, Albert Franco, and De Jur Jones. Discussion started with a review of preparations for the July Photo rallye. Then it was reported that the financials for Buttonwillow event are not final, but show as close to breakeven. The event would have been less successful without the Southern California support. The event has a tentative schedule for next year of the second week of March. Suesan reports that we have over 40 entries for Pomona, so success for that event seems assured. There was discussion of the financial and operating arrangements for that event. Skip brought up the issue of buying Chatterbox student/ instructor intercom systems for use in our driving events. There was generally favorable response, but the issue of sell or rent was not resolved. It was moved and passed that board members and chairpersons be allowed to spend up to $100 a month without priori board approval. It was also moved and passed that a budget be submitted and approved by the board for all events requiring an outlay of funds. Greg Schill stated that our finances are in order, and he is working up the final numbers for the concours. George, the Frisco's manager proposed the notion of having regular evening car shows at Friscos. There was brief discussion of the possible nature of such events. Jimmie spoke of having ads on our website. Skip suggested that simply having a link to a sponsor page that would have banner ads with links to advertiser's websites might work. There was a discussion of the desirability of letting vendors other than our advertisers make presentations at our meetings. Consensus was that permission should be evaluated on a case by case basis, and denied if the party was a competitor to any of our advertisers or supporters. The meeting was adjourned at 1240. Starting at the master cylinder, the brake fluid is pushed through the brake lines under high pressure to the brake caliper at each wheel of the car. In the United States, brake fluid is classified under a Department of Transportation (DOT) number, the most common being DOT 3 and DOT 4, which are glycol-ether based and are water soluble. DOT 5 is a silicone (synthetic) based fluid that should not be used in cars with anti-lock brakes (ABS). Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture (water) from the air in the atmosphere. Moisture enters the brake fluid through various ways, the main path being through the vent in the brake system fluid reservoir. Moisture can also enter through a process known as diffusion, where air molecules penetrate through rubber seals and rubber brake hoses. The process of water contamination starts when the brake fluid can is opened, and it never stops. Brake fluid is categorized as either dry or wet. The fluid is classified dry when there is no moisture content (new fluid) and wet at the point when moisture content can be measured. As the moisture content in the brake fluid goes up its boiling point drops significantly (water boils at 212 degrees F). When the brake fluid temperature increases (at the brake caliper) the possibility of boiling the fluid becomes a reality and the result is known as brake fade (the brake pedal becomes spongy and stopping distance is increased dramatically). This is a huge problem for a Porsche owner, as stopping is as critical to performance as acceleration. Brake system fade is also possible through for other mechanical reasons, but all are related to heat. Moisture also leads to corrosion because of the oxygen present in water. This corrosion damage can lead to substantial costs considering the expensive components involved. Contamination in the brake fluid also has a tendency to break down the interior rubber of the brake pressure hoses, not to mention the internal rubber sealing rings in the various components (brake master cylinder, calipers and the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) components). Under normal operation, brake pressure hoses constantly expand and contract and, over time, these hoses deteriorate and should be inspected when your car is serviced. Brake fluid should 26 be changed or flushed at least annually to get the moisture and contaminates out of the system. When brake fluid has been in service for one year, there will be approximately 1% contamination from water. The automotive brake system is sealed, so it should never need topping off unless your brake pads are excessively worn or in the case of a leak. Since DOT 3 & 4 brake fluids are glycol-ether based, they are very flammable and will also damage paint on contact. DOT 5 will not damage paint, but is not recommended in motorsports applications due to its tendency to carry air. Please note: We do not recommend DOT 5 (Synthetic) brake fluid due to the potential for suspension of air bubbles. ATE SL is a standard DOT 4 brake fluid which is very good for most any road driven car. ATE TYP200 and ATE Super Blue are each the same, the only difference is that one is gold and one is blue (some people like to alternate colors when flushing the system. This way they can see when all the "old" color has been replaced). These are great for club autocross and amateur track events. Another option for track car brake fluid is the Motul RBF600. In our opinion, the best brake fluid for motorsport (professional or otherwise) is Castrol SRF but it is very costly. For 1990 and later Porsches, we recommend ATE SL6, which is a low viscosity brake fluid designed more for the ABS braking and traction control systems that have very small and intricate orifices. Check the wet and dry boiling points on the brake fluid can to get a good idea of the quality in regards to temperature. Brake fluid is wet basically from when the can is opened. It is a good practice to replace your brake fluid once a year.
