We are approaching the end of 2015 and it has indeed been a challenging year for all of us with the oil and gas prices continuing to spiral downwards. With an inspiring workforce in INSTEP, we have done exceptionally well and accomplished many achievements worth applauding. Financially, our bottom-line numbers are impressive with a notable profit. In the early part of the year, PTTSB organization structure was realigned to make it more effective and efficient in facing challenging business outlook and uncertain economics headwinds. On the international front, a collaboration was sealed with NILEPET in South Sudan and another is currently on-going with Victorian TAFE institutions in Australia. In addition, we succeeded in getting new external clients comprising 4 international and 7 domestic clients. We presented papers at international conferences: Getenergy Global 2015 Event in London, International Mining and Resource Conference in Melbourne, UNESCO TVET Conference in Kuala Lumpur and World TVET Conference in Kuching. Our PTP-1 programme received accreditations from BTEC and OPITO, two awarding bodies from the UK. INSTEP was conferred the world’s first OPITO-approved oil and gas technical qualification centre for the maintenance, production and process trades. We also won the prestigious OPITO Employers Award at Abu Dhabi. INSTEP was also a proud recipient of the PEARSON Centre of Excellence and BTEC Outstanding Centre of Excellence awards. To add another feather to our cap, 2 of our PTP-1 learners received the 2014 PEARSON Medallion Award. For the first time, 74 instructors are BTEC certified and 3 others were certified by Australian Standards (Cert IV). 3 CEO’s Desk RADIANCE | Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) In INSTEP, we continually improve learning and support facilities to enhance the quality and learning experience. We have put in place some advanced learning facilities such as the LMTS, POTS, CBT & DCS as well as the HSE Virtual Reality. The resource centre was transformed into a learning hub with high speed WiFi installed. In keeping pace with the advancement of technology, PTP-1 learners are provided with tablets to replace the hardcopy modules. Besides providing easy and interactive learning, this initiave also reduces cost. As part of the improvement of campus infrastructure, upgrading of the learners’ accommodation and construction of new sport facilities have taken place. I sincerely thank each and every one of you for INSTEP’s sterling performance. Syabas! Despite the uncertain future ahead for the oil and gas industry, let us all work together for quantum leap improvements at all levels. In order to weather the storm we must adjust our sails, as change is vital for our organization sustainability. Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain. We thank the PTTSB Board for their continuous guidance and good support which has been instrumental in our achievements. I wish everyone a very Happy New Year and may 2016 bring out the best in all of us. S Chandramohan “Quality is everyone’s responsibility” - (Deming, W. Edwards) - CEO’s Desk 4 RADIANCE | Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) Highlights 5 Highlights RADIANCE | Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) INSTEP wins OPITO Employers Award 2015 INSTEP marked a major milestone this year when it won the OPITO Employers Award 2015 at OPITO’s Annual Global Oil & Gas Workforce Safety Awards. The announcement was made at OPITO Safety and Competency Conference (OSCC) 2015, held at Dusit Thani Hotel, Abu Dhabi on 3 November 2015. We won the award as INSTEP highlighted the key business drivers for using OPITO standards, the value derived from doing so and why this is important for the company, its business and its people. This achievement follows a conferment in April 2015 of INSTEP by OPITO as the world’s first OPITO-approved oil and gas technical qualification centre. INSTEP received OPITO accreditation for maintenance practice including Electrical, Mechanical and Instrumentation and Controls and in August 2015 for Process and Production trades. INSTEP was one of the shortlisted finalists announced on 29 October 2015 together with two others—OSRL in the UK and McDermott in Dubai. Mohd Zamri Abu Bakar, Head of Quality Assurance & Quality Control of Bridging Programme Department, represented Chandramohan, to receive the award. Well done, INSTEP! Highlights 6 RADIANCE | Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) Our People 7 Our People RADIANCE | Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) A moment with Pn Liza Mustapha .: PTTSB Board Member :. Despite being a PTTSB Board Member for almost 4 years , most INSTEP staff have yet had the opportunity to chat and get up-close and personal with this warm, gentle but firm Finance lady. Puan Liza Mustapha began her career in PETRONAS in 1995 as an Executive Accountant PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd for a period of 10 years. Subsequently, she was transferred to PETRONAS Gas Berhad for a period of 6 years and then served at Group Treasury for a period of 2 years. Puan Liza is currently the Head of Upstream Finance , a position she has held since 2013. Having served PETRONAS for 20 years Puan Liza, has had her fair share of ups and downs. Radiance End of FY2015 publication is privileged to have been able to ‘steal’ some time off her hectic schedule to share her outlook for FY2016. Our People 8 RADIANCE | Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) 1. Can you describe your illustrious journey in PETRONAS? Enriching. Along the way, I have not only learnt from my different work experiences and from the wise leaders of the organization, I have also made lifelong friends in PETRONAS. 2. What are your most memorable experiences? One of the exciting experiences I had was when I was assigned for six months to a company-level strategic initiative known as the E&P Strategy Study (EPSS) back in the year 2001. I was then an executive in PCSB Finance and was tasked to lead the support function stream within the Initiative. It was exciting as for the first time, I had the opportunity to understand and appreciate areas beyond finance, working with a mixed group of juniors like myself, experienced leaders and also external consultants. I believe this greatly helped broaden my outlook in the organization and at the same time afforded me the opportunity to experience first-hand how my bosses and the other leaders in the organization think and make decisions. I had a very supportive boss who was willing to take a chance on me while providing me with the necessary guidance. For that, I will always be grateful. I guess a negative experience worth sharing is when things became very stressful on both the work-front and the home-front. I felt at the time that perhaps I had reached a fork whereby I had to make a choice—work or family. The natural choice would be my family and I was already beginning to draft my resignation letter. However, after further counselling from my husband, parents and best friend, I acknowledged that my decision to leave work was very much driven by my emotional side, rather than my logical side. I then realized that a more effective decision would be to tackle the problem at hand logically by seeking alternative approaches to problem management both at work and at home. Once the root cause was identified and dealt with, I felt more in control of things and thus decided to stay on. I was able to find a happy medium. 3. How do you juggle work-life balance? Understanding my stakeholders’ expectations, being aware of the trade-offs and implications that one action has on the other and by constant communication. I have to say that being a working wife and mother, my husband has been very supportive and understanding of my role at work. 9 Our People RADIANCE | Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) 4. How do you foresee INSTEP thriving through the challenging time we are in at the present? “Thriving” is a rather big word to use, especially if one’s business is very dependent on the oil and gas industry, which is the case for INSTEP. In times of low oil price coupled with stubborn cost structures, typically it is the manpower-related expenses that become the natural focus to manage the bottom-line. In this regard, INSTEP needs to put forth a value proposition that is relevant and value-adding to the oil and gas business regardless of the market environment. In addition, like the oil and gas business, INSTEP will also need to figure out new ways of doing things e.g. how to expand the business whilst still keeping cost structure efficient and to form smart partnerships with current and potential stakeholders. 5. What is your advice to all INSTEP members generally, and INSTEP women staff particularly, and your expectations of them? Firstly, I believe that in today’s employment landscape, generally there is not much difference in how one needs to be, in order to be successful in his/her career; in other words, regardless of gender the normal advice applies i.e. the need to work hard, persevere, be responsible and to be guided by PETRONAS values in whatever we do. The team in INSTEP has to continuously have its hand on the pulse of the market environment, both in the technical education, as well as in the oil and gas space. Having said that, from personal experience, I believe that working women need to recognize who make up their stakeholders (i.e. family, colleagues, friends, etc.), understand their different needs and expectations and the trade-offs that her actions/choices will result in. Planning ahead helps, as does maintaining good communication at work and at home in order to better manage expectations. Our People 10 RADIANCE | Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) We Care! Program Sentuhan Kasih (Touch of Love) is an INSTEP’s annual community programme that aims to celebrate the less fortunate.
