It All Happens Here!
2016-17 SEASON
“Staying home is NOT the new going out!”
—John Schreiber
President & CEO, NJPAC
Dear Friends,
A story in The New York Times recently mourned the lost art of filling a weekend with activity and live entertainment –
that cocooning had usurped concert-going.
Guess who’s moving to our block for the first time? Hint: They’re a bunch of real characters... Sesame Street Live: Elmo Makes Music! Families will love the rest
of our kid-friendly lineup, too.
Really? When there are 400-plus special events to love at NJPAC each season, the odds are good I won’t be at home reading the paper.
Here’s an offer we couldn’t refuse concerning The Godfather of Soul: Get On Up: A James Brown Celebration, a one-time-only opportunity to gather members of the
James Brown Band on our stage. And there’s more … Sharon Jones, Bettye LaVette and Christian McBride “work it” in tribute to the hardest-working man in show
business, as part of the TD James Moody Jazz Festival.
Some folks think they can get the full dance experience by watching ballet on an iPad or listening to Beethoven via microchip.
We live in an age of distraction, when we’re wondering if we should click on a video because it’s (sigh) five … minutes … long.
Truth is, there’s no substitute for the real thing. The beauty and wonder of seeing dancers in motion, or feeling the crescendo of an orchestra down to your toes,
are best enjoyed in the inspirational surroundings of Prudential Hall, shared in a community of like-minded individuals.
Just to give you a taste of the excellence and excitement ahead for 2016-17, here’s a short roll call: comedy, conversation, family events, jazz, R&B, dance and classical music.
What’s more, I’ve taken the liberty of curating a list of eight “must-sees.”
Here they are…
Another of Newark’s greatest in the spotlight this season—as well as NJPAC’s Dance Advisor. In Savion Glover’s Chronology of a HooFer the tap master tells of the
big shoes he had to fill on his journey to becoming a theater legend.
Arlo Guthrie and Taj Mahal—folk music royalty and an iconic bluesman. Put them together and you have an example of the Arts Center’s knack for booking
unique collaborators. Similarly, look for The Chieftains, adding fiery Irish fiddler Natalie MacMaster to the band.
Following an Emmy-nominated third season on public television, American Songbook at NJPAC—NJPAC’s music-and-conversation series—is back with a new host:
Michael Feinstein, arguably the Songbook’s finest interpreter and historian. I hope you’ll join us for the taping of the new season in December.
It’s titled An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life. Steve Martin and Martin Short —two longtime, SNL friends—are reuniting for the first time in 20 years
in a night of stand-up. I won’t forget it, and neither will you.
I think you’ll agree with me that staying home is yesterday’s news.
Saxophonist and Newark treasure Wayne Shorter gets the all-star treatment during Wayne Shorter Weekend, featuring a pair of concerts, one featuring acoustical
works performed by Herbie Hancock and special guests, and the other reflecting Shorter’s “electrified” side from his years with Weather Report and beyond.
All the best,
The New Jersey Speakers Series returns! John Cleese. I could stop there, but then I’d be leaving out Ted Koppel, Ehud Barak and all the other boldface names.

silenced by Soviet authority. His response
could have cost him his life. But it proved
to be his greatest triumph. The London

Composer Anthony Davis and playwright

opera about the Central Park Five,

music, in its many genres, is used to tell
the story of racism and injustice in the
conviction of the men accused of raping
a jogger in Central Park in 1989. A brilliant
and moving score incorporates young voices

“Our TD James Moody Jazz Festival celebrates its fifth year
in November! This season, I’m especially looking forward to
leading all-star concert tributes to two of Newark’s legendary
musicians—the “Divine” Sarah Vaughan and saxophonist and
composer Wayne Shorter—and hosting an afternoon of music
and conversation with four-time Grammy winner Esperanza
Spalding. I’m also beyond excited to be part of a very special
reunion of James Brown alumni in Prudential Hall with guests
including Sharon Jones, Bettye LaVette and more to come.
Now and throughout the season, you’ll be hearing from
Cécile McLorin Salvant, The Buena Vista Social Club, Wynton
Marsalis, the greats of GRP Records, and many others. That’s
the kind of company we keep. Expect big turnouts and I
recommend you get yourself to the box office early.”
