Staying on top of new technology Tick
CLINICAL DIAGNOSTICS – SPECIALIZING IN TICK-BORNE ILLNESSES Staying on top of new technology Clongen Labs uses Real Time PCR for the detection of many tick-borne illnesses. Real Time PCR allows for rapid amplification and quantification of almost any targeted DNA molecule. It is highly sensitive, requiring less than five copies of target DNA in some cases, giving Clongen an advantage of high detection rates. Enrichment Protocol Tick-borne illness testing (List of organisms) Sample Report • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Anaplasma phagocytophylum Babesia microti Babesia species (10 species not including duncani) Babesia duncani Bartonella henselae Bartonella species (20 different species) Borrelia afzellii Borrelia burgdorferi Borrelia lonestari Borrelia garinii Coxiella burnetti Ehrlichia chaffeensis Ehrlichia ewingii Francisella tularensis Mycoplasma fermentans Mycoplasma species (25 different species) Rickettsia species (9 different species) Electronic scanning and quantification of bands in Clongen Laboratories, LLC 12321 Middlebrook Rd. Suite# 120 Germantown, MD 20874 Lyme Disease Western blots (See Sample Report) Organisms to the left that are highlighted can be enriched prior to performing PCR (Optional – Additional cost of $125 per organism). A special culture medium is shipped to the patient prior to sample collection. Blood, tissue biopsy, fluid aspirate, synovial fluid, swabs from any source or any other sample source can be inoculated into the medium of choice and shipped back to the lab. Following a 10 day incubation period, liquid medium is subjected to DNA extraction and tested for the requested pathogen. They evolved and developed strategies to evade as well as down-regulate the immune response and also hide in tissues to avoid being attacked by immune cells, antibodies, complement, and other immune reactive elements. The evolution of those stealth pathogens introduced many challenges to laboratories trying to diagnose infections with tick borne pathogens. We recognize that the copy numbers can be extremely low in whole blood and even in tissues. Our strategy is to amplify the target before trying to detect a signal. We offer an enrichment protocol that allows those fastidious organisms to propagate to larger numbers over a 10 day incubation period, thereby making it easier for laboratory scientists to detect them using state of the art Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction detection platforms. Please call our main Laboratory Number to request an enrichment medium collection kit.
