DEDICATION
With affection and respect, we dedicate this production
of Peter and the Starcatcher to the memory of Richard
Newdick, who taught acting, directing, theatre administration
and dramatic literature at VCU for 30 years, chaired the
department from 1989 to 1996, and played Harold in our
1971 production of The Boys in the Band at Hanover Tavern.
Like Peter, Richard loved life, achieved great heights, and
maintained his boyish spirit forever. He is greatly missed.

To borrow from Tennessee Williams’ final lines in A Streetcar Named Desire, Virginia
Rep “always depends on the kindness of strangers.” To an even greater extent, like
Lennon and McCartney, “we get by with a little help from our friends.”
Like all nonprofit professional theatres, symphonies, ballet and opera companies,
we need 35% to 40% of our annual operating revenue to come from contributions
if we are to remain healthy and strong. Unlimited and creative giving opportunities
exist within our annual fund drive and/or our on-going capital and endowment
campaigns.
Whatever your means and giving preferences, we hope you will consider becoming
a part of Virginia Rep’s family of friends. Please contact Bruce Miller or Phil
Whiteway for more information: [email protected], [email protected],

COMMUNITY PARTNERS
Peter and the Starcatcher captures the spirit of childhood imagination and the
power of fantasy. To some of Richmond’s children, the dream of a stable home
and family are the focus of their imagination. Virginia Rep is delighted to recognize
three organizations who provide homes and services to children in the Richmond
area and turn a fantasy into a reality. Their students and families will be attending
a performance free of charge.

CHILDREN’S THEATRE
at Willow Lawn
Elk Hill enables children and families to
transform overwhelming challenges into
successful futures. Through specialized
education, community based services and
residential treatment programs, children
and families can discover the academic,
vocational, behavioral, and relationship
skills they need to be successful.
Virginia Home for Boys and Girls
VHBG is the only organization in Virginia
certified in the evidence-based Teaching
Family Model (TFM), one of the very
few models endorsed by the American
Psychological Association. Their therapeutic
neighborhood consists of Teaching
Family Homes, John G. Wood (K-12)
Alternative Education, and Therapeutic
Resources. In the home, classroom, and
the community, VHBG reinforces positive
family dynamics and teach essential
behavioral and life skills.

HISTORIC NOVEMBER THEATRE
From 1911 through 1914, our historic
November Theatre was named the
Empire. It was Richmond’s first
integrated theatre post Reconstruction.
Virginia’s earliest Jim Crow Laws
banned black theatregoers from all
entertainments patronized by whites.
Moses Hoffheimer, developer of the
Empire, proposed converting his
theatre’s gallery (the top balcony) from
a seating area reserved for the “gallery
gods” (young white ruffians who filled a
similar balcony at Richmond’s Academy
of Music) to a segregated seating area for
black audiences. At Hoffheimer’s urging,
Virginia’s Jim Crow Laws were re-written
to state, “Every person... operating... any
public hall, theater, opera house, motion
picture show or any place of public
entertainment which is attended by both
white and colored persons, shall separate
the white race and the colored race.”
It seems regressive now, but
Hoffheimer’s efforts to seat black
and white audiences under the same
roof were progressive for their time.
Forty-three years later, the founders
of Barksdale Theatre would put the
next nail in the coffin of Virginia’s Jim
Crow theatre law. In 1954, Pete Kilgore
PETER Section 2 Playbill_FIN.indd 14-15
and Muriel McAuley invited a group of
professors and students from Virginia
Union University to join their white
audience at Hanover Tavern, sitting side
by side. In open defiance of the law and
risking arrest, they presented the first
fully integrated performance in Virginia
post Reconstruction.
When the Empire opened in 1911,
it operated as a legitimate theatre,
presenting live performances of
great plays instead of vaudeville or
silent movies. The renowned actress
Lucille La Verne, a veteran of seven
Broadway hits, assembled her own
stock company at the Empire in 1913.
She presented 80 performances in four
months, selling 147,000 tickets! Edith
Lindeman, Times-Dispatch theatre critic,
wrote that the Empire “was a popular
theater with audiences, especially on
Wednesday matinees when each woman
in attendance received a quarter-pound
box of Huyler’s chocolates and a dainty
linen handkerchief to wipe her eyes
during the sad scenes.”
The full history of the remarkable
November Theatre can be found online

DONORS
We thank the many individuals and institutional funders who have given to Virginia Rep so generously
in the past year. The following lists reflect contributions received between August 1, 2014 to July 31,
2015. We have made every effort to list individual names correctly. If we have made an error, please
accept our apologies and contact our development office at 783-1688, ext. 1123.
Virginia Rep is grateful for the generous challenge grants of $260,000 each from The Cabell
Foundation and Mary Morton Parsons Foundation to support the continuing restoration of our historic
facilities on Broad Street. We are currently raising funds to meet the matching requirement from
individuals. Gifts noted with the symbol ^ include contributions to this effort.
