President’s Comments
by Roz Kleffman, President
By the time you read this, the Christmas wrappings
will be all tucked away, the boxes recycled and the
presents put in a safe place. Every year most of us
get new camera gear for Christmas. Every year some
of us put it away and don’t even start to use it. It is
time to get that stuff out ~ yes, all of it, and look
over what you have stored in that dark closet. Lots
of stuff happens to electronics over time. Batteries
corrode over time - even in a few months. Moisture
in the air is the culprit. Tucking those electronics in a
stuffy closet with little air circulation often leads to
battery corrosion. Get the batteries out of those items
that you seldom use. Think about a desiccant in your
camera bag. You probably have seen those small bags
that say “not for human consumption” on the label.
Those liitle bags absorb moisture from the air. May
help save your equipment from corrosive damage.
Time to update your camera gear insurance policy.

INSIDE
Just decide to take a look at all the gear and add or
subtract those items from your policy. Don’t have a
policy? Most home owner policies have a a rider to
put on camera gear or jewelery. Usually cost less than
$100.00 per year for full replacement coverage for all
your gear. Check it out!
Put all that used equipment to the side. Consider
giving it to someone. The club will be happy to try to
give away your stuff. Just bring it to a club meeting
and put it out on a back table with a “FREE” sign.
Some folks may want to sell the equipment. That
is OK too but you need to stay with the items and
let people know it is for sale and the prices. Items
that do not sell need to go back to your house. Be
considerate. Space is limited on competition nights so
please do not bring your equipment then. All other
nights are OK.
Have a happy and healthy New Year!

January Field Trip: Luray Caverns
Private Photographic Tour of the Cave on January 19, 2013
by Jeanine Cummins, Field Trip Leader
As we approach the new year and close out another
year of great photographic field trips we are looking
forward to the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley
and Luray Caverns on January 19, 2013. The Caverns
were discovered over 130 years ago by a tinsmith
William Campbell, Benton Stebbins, a
photographer and several others, who
were looking for a cave. The rest is history.
Luray Cavern Motel, which has winter rates for Friday
and Saturday for $60.00. Call for additional information
and reservations from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily at
540-743-6551 or toll free 888-941-4531.
There are other attractions as well located at Luray
Caverns- Luray Cavern Museum, Garden
Maze and the Luray Singing Tower among
others. Please refer to the website: www.
luraycaverns.com
Luray Caverns is about 118 miles
southwest of Bowie Maryland. We will
have a two-hour guided tour beginning
at 8:30 a.m., allowing us to have access
before the general public. We will meet at 8:00 a.m.
Tripods, monopods and flashes are allowed. There is
a wheelchair lift with a 375-pound limit. The inside
temperature is maintained at 54°F.
I will need to provide a head-count to
Luray Caverns before the close of business,
January 11. We can meet after the tour to
decide on a place to eat. If anyone has any suggestions,
please let me know.
I’ve heard from some of you already; anyone else
interested please contact me at 240-461-2914 or by

December Competition Results
by Zolt Levay, VP for Competitions
There were 125 total entries in the December
competition with the theme “I was Framed.” It was
inspiring to see all the creative ways photographers
were able to interpret this theme. Congratulations
to all the winners. Thanks to Karen Messick (www.
karenlmessickphotography.com/ ) for taking on the
task of narrowing down winners from among the
many excellent entries, applying the theme to the
entries, and providing useful comments to ponder and
apply to future photography. Thanks too to everyone
who helped with setup and cleanup and to make the
mechanics of the competition run smoothly.
the End of Year competition. Any photos that won
any ribbon, 1st, 2nd, 3rd or Honorable Mention, in
any competition during the club year is eligible. This
includes several phases. For digital entries, if the photo
is still available online, you need to change the date to
the End of Year competition. If you removed a photo,
you can re-submit it. For prints, deliver the winning
prints to the Competition V.P. and submit a digital
version to use for the slide show at the End of Year
dinner.
As usual, if you have any questions, contact me at
[email protected]. Keep shooting, and see you at
the next club meeting.

Photo Talk Meeting - January 14
Landmark Photography
by Steve Bruza, VP Photo-Talk
Some people might think that when a judge says “it
looks just like a postcard” it would be a good thing,
but often it’s followed by the word, “…out!” Why? There
probably was not much going on or enough creativity
to keep it in the running for the final round. It’s a
classic dilemma for travel photography as we approach
making an image of a familiar landmark or landscape.
So, what to do? This will be our opening discussion for
our Photo Talk on January 14.
Another more challenging approach is to capture
just a part instead of the whole landmark. Think of the
motto “less is more.” Embrace the art of minimalism
in your approach to making a photo of some iconic
structure. For example, I am sure you have seen
dramatic close ups of columns or steps on some of our
national monuments in DC. That might inspire you to
do something similar to capture a single piece of an
edifice that would be unique enough to stand out in a
competition. As always you need to pay close attention
to lighting and composition and these aspects become
more critical when isolating an object.
Even the most skillful photographer can fall into
the trap of taking a shot of some iconic structure or
location just to document the fact they were there. We
have all done that. In fact it may be good to do it a
few times just to get it out of our systems. So after you
have those standard pictures in your memory cards or
on film how do you approach making a more notable
photograph? There are actually some tricks that we will
explore as we review images of landmarks made by
award winning photographers. One that might surprise
you is looking in the opposite direction to discover the
possibility of reflections or shadows.
After we explore the topic of landmarks we will look
back at digital entries from our prior competition.
We always learn a few things new things. Hearing the
maker describe how or why they took a particular shot
provides some ideas or you might learn something new
about someone in the club. Like the radio announcer
Paul Harvey would say, “the rest of the story” is
sometimes more interesting, enlightening and often
entertaining. Please join us on January 14 to hear the
stories and have fun too as we critique our own work.
B-CCC Holiday Dinner
January 13, 2013 - 5:00 p.m.
by Gail Phillips, Social Director
Don’t forget! The Bowie-Crofton Camera Club’s
annual Holiday Dinner will once again be at Hellas
Restaurant (8498 Veterans Highway, Millersville,
Maryland). This year it will be held on Sunday, January
13, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until we’ve all had our fill.

The price will remain at $25.00 per person. There is
still time to sign up! You can do so at the January 7 club
meeting or by e-mail to Gail Phillips at gail.m.phillips@
comcast.net. You can pay our treasurer, Warren Wilson,
at the meeting, or you can mail your check to Gail (2716
Mt. Olive Court, Mt. Airy, MD 21771). Our number must
be firmed up by January 8, so if you have not paid by
the January 7 meeting, you will not be included in that
count. Hope to see you all there!
The program for the evening will be an “out of this
world” experience! Zolt Levay has agreed to bring
us some of his “work” work. Since he’s involved with
the images from the Hubble Space Telescope, this
should be a fascinating presentation. He’s entitled it,

Viewing Photos in Order in a Slideshow Using Vista Windows Photo Gallery
A Computer Filing Tip
by Beth Fabey
Have you ever been frustrated when you use
Windows Photo Gallery to show guests your photos
from a flash drive, only to have the slideshow jump
around and seem to pick your photos to show in
random order? Try this solution:
you get to 10, it won’t start intermingling the slides by
going 1, 11, 2, 22, etc. You can batch rename photos in
Windows. When the photos are in the order you want
them to be in, select all and right click the first photo.
From the menu select “Rename”. Type a group name
followed by a space, the number 001 in parentheses,
then the extension.jpg. For example: Bowie (001).jpg.
Push ENTER. All files in the folder will automatically
be renamed in sequential order. NOTE: If using Vista,
type a name for the group, then a space, then 10001
inside parentheses, followed by the extension .jpg.
For example: Cherry Blossom Festival (10001).jpg Then
press ENTER. (If you don’t start with (10001), Vista will
pull the last image to be the first shown—go figure!)
If you are not already there, open a picture and click
“Go to Gallery’ in the upper left corner. Then look for
a search bar in the upper right and to the left of that
search bar are four little squares. Click those four little
squares for a scroll down menu, then click “Sort By>”
and choose whatever you want; most likely file name
but it could be date taken, etc. You will probably want
to change the “Group By>” option as well (perhaps
Date taken or None, Ascending Order?). You might
need to number your images sequentially if you find
that none of the sorting mechanisms is working for
you, and then sort by file name.
Once files are renamed, try again to sort the photos
in Photo Gallery as described at the beginning of this
article.
Bill Conway suggests making all of the images the
same name and adding a number after the new name
that reflects the order you want it to appear in. Use
3-digit numbers starting with 001. That way, when
Then again, you could always sign up for Dick
Russell’s Pro Show Gold workshop being given this
winter at our club to really do a slideshow up in style!
It’s a great workshop and well worth your time.
How-To Meeting - January 28
Social Networking and Photography
by Bill Conway, VP How-To
Ever feel socially inadequate? Well, I do every time I do that social networking thing on Facebook or Flickr. I’m
totally lost and the network does its own thing. Well for this month’s How-To, Zolt Levay is going to shed some
light on the mysteries of social networking.
