News from the Customer Club
Dear Customer,
Have you moved up a step in our value chain? From Bronze to Silver, or from
Silver to Gold? Or have you leaped from Bronze to Gold? Your point balance
for all of 2015 can be found on the order form that accompanies this issue of
Bulletin. This is where you can see any changes. One way to speed up your
move from one customer group to another is to sign up for a subscription.
We usually talk about three strong incentives for becoming a subscriber:
you automatically receive the most recent stamps and stamp products in
your mailbox, we pay for shipping and invoicing and you receive Bulletin five
times a year at no extra cost. See our entire selection on pages 16–17.
In the next issue I will present the Customer Club’s new set-up. The
inspiration behind this change, which will be the largest change since we started the club four years ago,
comes in part from you, its members, and in part from our Danish colleagues at PostNord Stamps.
Watch for more news in Bulletin 3/2016.
Sincerely,
Anders Kind
Club Host

Royal Anniversaries – new memorial
letter celebrating the royal family
We are now introducing our ninth memorial letter since the premier in 2010 with
Royal Weddings. Once again the royal family is in the spotlight. The stamps on
Royal Anniversaries Memorial Letter are the three stamps from the current
Royal Anniversaries minisheet, the Royal Wedding stamp from 1976 and the first
stamp depicting a portrait of Queen Silvia from 1981. The memorial letter and
the special cancellation were designed by Gustav Mårtensson.

Two royal anniversaries will be celebrated this
year. King Carl Gustaf turns 70 on April 30 and
June 19 marks 40 years since Queen Silvia
became the Queen of Sweden. The Royal
Anniversaries minisheet also celebrates the
order of succession with the King, Crown
Princess Victoria and Princess Estelle, who recently turned four.
Congratulations
to the King and Queen!
Carl XVI Gustaf was born on April 30, 1946 at
Haga Palace. He was the fifth child and only son
to Hereditary Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess
Sibylla. He was given the titles Hereditary
Prince of Sweden and Duke of Jämtland and
named Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus.
When Gustaf Adolf died in an airplane crash
in 1947, Carl Gustaf advanced one step in the
order of succession. When his great-grandfather Gustaf V died in 1950, Carl Gustaf became
the heir apparent.
As the Crown Prince, Carl Gustaf participated
in an extensive program after graduating from
high school to learn about Swedish management and business and become better-versed
in international relationships. For example, he
participated in the Swedish UN delegation.
In the summer of 1972, Crown Prince Carl
Gustaf attended the Olympic Games in
München. There he met Silvia Sommerlath, an
educational hostess, who eventually became
his wife and Queen of Sweden.
On September 15, 1973, Gustaf VI Adolf
passed away and Carl Gustaf succeeded him
under the name Carl XVI Gustaf. Since 1818, the
Bernadotte line has been the reigning dynasty
in Sweden, and Carl XVI Gustaf is the seventh
Bernadotte monarch in succession.
Carl XVI Gustaf married Silvia Sommerlath
on June 19, 1976, and this year Swedes are
celebrating Silvia's 40th year as Queen.
Traditions, continuity and succession are
central aspects of the monarchy. In 2013, the
40th anniversary of Carl XVI Gustaf's accession
to the throne was celebrated. PostNord issued
a stamp on the theme of the order of succession that depicted the King, Crown Princess
Victoria and Princess Estelle. This theme is now
being depicted on a stamp once again, and we
have another opportunity to see these three
royals together.

The five bridges selected as the stamp motifs represent several different eras, building t echniques and
architectural designs. The p
 rocess of building a bridge
has a
lways been considered to be very difficult. Bridge
builders used to have to estimate the strength, and
often with extremely large margins, but thanks to
today's computer programs bridges are more precise
and slimlined.

Tallberg bridges
The Tallberg bridges are three bridges along the
Main Northern Line in Västerbotten that were built
during different eras using different techniques.
The first bridge is an iron truss bridge from 1888,
the second a concrete arch bridge from 1919 and
the third a composite girder bridge from 1994 built
with both concrete and steel.
Sölvesborgsbron
Europe's longest walking and cycling bridge (760
m) that was finished in 2012. Named one of the
world's ten most interesting bridges by Designboom design magazine. A large portion of the
superstructure is made from a new, rust-free
material.

Tullbron
A stone arch bridge in Falkenberg, built 1756–1761
in the spirit of the Roman arch bridges. The
bridge spans the Ätran river and was named a
historical monument in 1984.
SEK 70
Uddevallabron
Lejonströmsbron
Opened in 2000. It is a cable-stayed bridge, a
technique utilized for long spans. This technique is
the preferred method for bridges that stretch
across fairways, where the goal is to have as few
supports as possible that could obstruct boat
traffic. The bridge is 1,712 m long and has two
pylons, both of which are 149 m tall.
The bridge spanning Skellefte River is the
country's oldest wooden bridge, and the original
was completed in 1737. It is a truss bridge and the
load is supported by underlying diagonal bracing.
The piles were originally wood, but they were
replaced with more stable stone foundations in
1862. Became a historical monument in 1994.

Staffan Lagergren’s collection contains stamps, postcards, letters and cancellations, all related to bridges.
Staffan Lagergren likes bridges on stamps
Staffan Lagergren studied at KTH Royal
Institute of Technology and dreamed about
building bridges. Instead, he received his
Master’s in Civil Engineering with a different
focus. His interest in bridges lives on in his Gilla
broar! (Like Bridges!) stamp collection, which
has won several awards in the Open class.
“The new Swedish series with bridges is a
nice addition to my collection. What is really
fun is that my favorite bridge for many years,
Tullbron bridge in Falkenberg, is one of the
stamp motifs,” says Staffan Lagergren, who
with the name of his collection (Gilla broar!)
refers to Facebook and other social media
through the “Like” function.
Staffan Lagergren decided to create his
collection and enter it into the Open class,
which adds a bit of excitement to collecting and
opens the door to new perspectives. The majority of his Gilla broar! collection consists of
stamps, cancellations and postcards with
motifs of bridges from around the world.
“The collection consists of 40 A3-sheets
divided into different themes. One theme is
types of builds and builders, for example
Gustave Eiffel, who constructed several railway
bridges but of course is most known for the
Eiffel Tower. Another theme is how bridges link
together regions and countries. Some great
examples are the Öresundsbron, Svinesundsbron and Ölandsbron bridges.
Staffan Lagergren’s “Top Three”
Tullbron, Falkenberg
(Sweden 2016)
“Beautiful stone arch bridge

across the Ätran river’s
dramatic rapids”

2 Pont Neuf, Paris
(France 1978)
“The oldest bridge in Paris.
This is where the odd
couple from the movie
The Lovers on the Bridge
first met”
3 Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol
(England 2006)
“This suspension bridge across the
Avon river was built during the period
1829–1864 under the direction of
Isambard Kingdom Brunel”

Exclusively for Bulletin’s readers - meal r esearcher
Richard Tellström writes about the food culture
that is hiding behind some of the current stamp
motifs and how food trends are adopted by
countries and continents. Sushi’s path to our tables
did not stretch directly from Japan to Sweden.
Trendsetters behind all
imported food cultures
p h oto : h a n s lu n d h o l m
It is possible to view the food depicted on the
stamps in two ways – in part as our choice of what
we want to eat and in part as an indication of how
we pick up food cultures from others. Food culture
is constantly evolving and a driving force behind
this change is the cultural elite’s behavior and
habits. The people we call “trendsetters”.
Food cultures do not really “spread”, rather they
have been consciously cultivated and adopted by a
few select people. Their dissemination is then
largely the result of the “keeping up with the
Jones’s” phenomenon among the general public
and large consumer groups.
New York, London and Paris are the world’s three
most important centers for new food culture
trends, and it is here the new dishes are created
that are actively adopted by trendsetters from
Sweden and other countries. This is also where
dishes from around the world are given a new
interpretation.
We did not bring in sushi directly from Japan.
This dish, which is so popular today, came to us
around 1980 via New York. An Americanized
version of sushi was created there, and when it was
adopted and re-planted in the Swedish food culture
Richard Tellström is a meal
researcher who holds a PhD
from Örebro University. He has

programs. Three years ago he

the Swedish Academy of
Gastronomy.
it underwent additional localization. We have more
rice in our sushi, whereas in Japan the focus is
more on fish.
Without the growing interest for Japan in the
1980s, sushi would hardly have rooted itself in
Sweden. At that time the west was discovering
smart, Japanese production systems and the
“Just In Time” concept. Cultural factors such as the
Shogun TV series and music groups such as
Kroumata also supported the trend. The popularization of sushi was driven by the middle-class, who
frequently ate out in restaurants.
Pizza was not first introduced in Skärholmen, but
rather in Östermalm, and it did not come from Italy
but from the French Riviera and New York as early
as in the 1950s. One person behind its rise in
popularity was top chef Bengt Wedholm. Pizza had
its breakthrough around 1968, the year of the
student revolts. With its informal and youthful
emphasis, pizza was the perfect meal for the era.
When established dishes are introduced to an
entirely new culture, it is important that they are
given an appealing taste profile and that they
complement the local food selection. Spices play an
important role here in terms of recognition. In
Sweden we are more reserved than the spice-
loving Oriental and Asian kitchens.
One of the stamp motifs shows crisp bread and
cheese, a historic combination that reaches back to
at least the time of the Vikings. Only time will tell if
the new, imported dishes can match this kind of
longevity.
