A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings, Friends and Alums.
If you recall, we made the strategic decision to
focus on our liberal arts and health care education
programs in 2006. With eight years behind us, we
continue to build on this decision and strengthen
our academics.
Our Health Information Management (HIM) degree
is up and running on campus and this year, HIM
students can complete online coursework. We offer
traditional four-year and accelerated nursing degrees, RN-to-BSN, and a master’s
in nursing. Also, the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program is at capacity, and
the Physician Assistant (PA) program is under construction and set to matriculate
its first class in 2016. All these offerings are supported by a top-notch natural
science program, which continues to send students to medical school, veterinary
school, and on to graduate research.
We have transformed Berchmans Hall from a cozy residence hall to a state-of-theart health science facility. The building’s ground floor and first floor house the
physical therapy program; the second and third floors are home to the nursing
program; and the fourth floor will house the PA program.
During this same time, we have strengthened our liberal arts programs. We have
reinstated the music degree, built a dedicated graphic arts lab, expanded the
history faculty, and rebuilt the First Year Experience—focusing on a successful
transition from the academics of high school to college.
With your unfailing dedication and loyalty, Saint Mary is positioning itself for a
bright future.
Blessings to you,
Sister Diane Steele, SCL, Ph.D., C’83

FOREVER FRIENDS
Eloise, C’49, and Tom Kipp
F
rom the halls of Berchmans to shared meals in the caf*, Saint Mary lives, learns, and
grows as a community. A community is only as strong as its people—and USM has
been blessed with alums, students, and friends dedicated to keeping the spirit of the
mission alive.
Eloise Kipp, C’49, of Baldwin City, Kan., is a living example of a Saint Marian forever
dedicated to the university community and its mission.
For 65 years, Kipp has been meeting with a group of Kansas City alums once a month for
fellowship. They’ve shared thousands of laughs, watched babies grow into happy parents,
offered advice and words of wisdom, and provided a constant support over the years. The
group’s dynamics have changed over time, and they’ve moved from sewing, to playing
bridge, to having lunch—but their special bond is forever.
Kipp even stays in touch with her freshman-year roommate, Sister Mary Francine Stubbs.
“She’s wonderful,” said Kipp. “We still talk on the phone—actually, we got to sit down and
talk for an hour at this year’s reunion.”
Reunions are a priority for Kipp. She’s only missed two or three over the years—and her
husband of 63 years, Tom, has made it to just as many. “My classmates joke that he’s an
honorary alum,” said Kipp. “He just loves Saint Mary.”
When asked about her greatest memory of her time in Leavenworth, without any hesitation,
she said, “Friends—I made so many lasting friendships, and I still have those friends today.”
As affectionately as Kipp speaks about her friendships, Saint Mary is forever grateful for her
nearly seven decades of unwavering loyalty and commitment to the university and its values.
*Students refer to Saint Joseph Dining Hall as the “caf.”

SAYING GOODBYE TO A DEAR FRIEND
T
John Baker
1938 - 2014
S
aint Mary wasn’t John Baker’s alma mater—it was
actually his wife’s (Mary Loretta “Letty” Baker, C’62),
but he certainly served Saint Mary as if it was his own,
eagerly championing the university and sitting on its
USM Board of Trustees for three years.
Osborne was a starter for the Spires from 2003-2006. “I have always
felt blessed by the opportunity that USM gave me to play college
football,” Osborne said. “As I built relationships on campus and identified
mentors, I began to create a network and experiences that encouraged
me to pursue my dream of becoming a football coach.”
“John was always interested in the details, as most accountants
are,” said friend and co-board member, Bill Trenkle. “He devoted
a lot of time to the school his wife loved, and the board and the
school’s finances were in good hands with John.”
“
He was a kind man of deep integrity.
He could ask the hard questions, but
was always gentle and respectful.”
— USM President Sister Diane Steele
He served as the president of Troupe Kehoe Whitaker & Kent and
as a board member and treasurer of the Gladstone Area Chamber
of Commerce.
Baker actively gave of his time to the Catholic parish of St. Charles
Borromeo (Kansas City, Mo.) as a Eucharistic minister, sacristan,
and a member of their finance team. He also sat on the board for

he University of Saint Mary has named Jay Osborne, U’05,
as interim head coach of the Spires Football Team. Osborne’s
appointment follows the departure of Head Football Coach
Lance Hinson.
Osborne, previously the program’s offensive coordinator, joined the
coaching staff in 2010. He was the architect of the Spires’ prolific
offensive attack the past several seasons, and he boasts college, high
school, and professional coaching experience on his résumé.
Baker, an outstanding CPA and a great friend to USM, passed
away Aug. 7 at the age of 76 while vacationing with his family.
He will be dearly missed.
The Kansas City area native’s accounting expertise played a critical
role in steering USM’s growth and planning for the future.

the Northland Partnership—a program providing temporary housing for
homeless families with children—and volunteered with the Sierra Club,
Ursuline Sister of Paola, and the Center City Schools Fund of the
KCMO Diocese.
Baker was remembered on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014 at St. Charles
Borromeo Parish Church. He leaves behind his wife, Letty, of 46 years,
their three children (John and Cristy Baker, Carey and Pat Lison, and Jim
and Tiffany Baker), and six grandchildren.
“He was a kind man of deep integrity,” said USM President Sr. Diane
Steele, C’83. “He could ask the hard questions, but was always gentle
and respectful.”
Baker will be undoubtedly be missed by all, but never forgotten at
Saint Mary.
“USM helped to springboard me into the next chapter of my life and
helped to build my confidence and conviction for the road ahead. As I
left USM to pursue the next opportunity in football, I hoped to return
to my alma mater so that I could give back just a portion of what was
given to me,” said Osborne.
In addition to his USM football career, Osborne thanks his professors
and mentors. “There are four people on campus that have known
me for over a decade,” he said. “I look up to all of them and know
that their teachings have greatly shaped my passion for life. They are
Sister Madonna Fink, (C’54), Dr. Nancy King, Carlton Philpot, and Dave
Reynolds. My time in the classroom with the latter three was a
great experience.”
USM’s Athletic Director Rob Miller is hopeful for the team’s future under
Osborne. “We’re very confident that our football program is in great
hands with Jay,” he said. “He’s a great recruiter. He’s been involved in
every aspect of the team, and we’re excited that he’ll be leading the
team. We expect big things out of Spire Football going forward.”
USM Interim head coach, Jay Osborne, U’05
Coach Osborne also added, “We intend to finish in the top echelon of the
KCAC [Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference] and make a real impact in
the NAIA [National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics]. USM football
also has a proud tradition of creating academic All-Americans, and we
plan on continuing to grow in that distinction while competing for a
conference title.”
In addition to athletic success, Osborne plans to focus on his team’s
growth in character and service. “I am looking for every one of the Spires
to put their greatest effort forward in the classroom and on the field. At
the end of the season, we will not be judged by a number, but rather
on selfless acts, passion for our school, ambition to succeed, relentless
pursuit of our tasks, and courage during competition.”
The Spires opened the season at home against Oklahoma Baptist
University on Sept. 6. This year, Homecoming is Saturday, Oct. 11—
tailgate cookout starts at 11 a.m. with kickoff at 1:30 p.m.

IRA ROLLOVER
NEW SPORT FOR USM
2014 FALL SPORTS CALENDAR
T
U
WOMEN’S SOCCER
From the desk of Jane Ellen
he IRA Rollover opportunity that Congress approved over the last
seven years has sparked questions.
You might be wondering: Was 2013 the final year, or will it
be approved again?
As of July 1, Congress has not approved the IRA Rollover. However, I’m
watching this closely and will reach out to any of you who were 70 ½
years old as of June 30, 2014.
The House Ways & Means Committee approved legislation that would
provide a retroactive and permanent extension of the current IRA
Charitable Rollover. Since 2006, Congress extended the Rollover three
times (though the current provision expired at the end of 2013). The
Permanent IRA Charitable Contribution Act of 2014 (H.R. 4619) would
end any uncertainty around the temporary provision, and make the
Rollover a permanent part of the tax code—once and for all.
You might be wondering: What in the world in Jane Ellen
talking about?
Here is a reminder for those of you who have IRAs and are at least
70 ½ years old, a special opportunity under federal tax legislation
allowed you to direct your IRA minimum required distribution (MRD) and
up to $100,000 to charity. Why would anyone do this? To help Saint
Mary while saving a few tax dollars. If you do not depend upon your
MRD, you can direct your MRD to charity—avoiding ordinary income tax
on those dollars. It’s a win for you and for Saint Mary.
If you have any questions on this issue or on planned giving, please
contact me. I’m happy to help.

Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse
SM is proud to announce Matt Kimsey will spearhead our new
men’s and women’s club-level lacrosse teams.
Before coming to USM, Coach Kimsey spent four years coaching
with the Blue Valley West Jaguars in Overland Park, Kan., where he
was awarded the 2011 U.S. Lacrosse Assistant Coach of the Year for
the Lacrosse Association of Kansas City (LAKC) schools. Coach Kimsey
posted a 35-11 record, earning an LAKC playoff berth in each season and
a semi-final appearance in 2014.
“USM Lacrosse will strengthen a student's values and prepare our
student athletes for life after school and lacrosse—living value-centered
lives for the well-being of society,” Coach Kimsey said.
“We are going to build something special here at the University of Saint
Mary,” said Kimsey. “We’ll build a program that will compete and build
leaders on and off the field. I’m excited to be at the helm of the Spires
lacrosse team, and I’m actively recruiting student athletes who are eager
to help build that legacy.”
Interest in the new program is high. Coach Kimsey has already
recruited 11 players from six different states and Canada. “The diverse
background of our teams is something that is really cool,” Kimsey said.
“These recruits will come in from different backgrounds and have one
vision and goal—to get a quality education while having the privilege
to play lacrosse at the collegiate level. If that’s not an opportunity
to discover your God-given potential and push yourself for something
greater, then I’m not sure what is.”
In addition to work on the field, the lacrosse teams will follow the USM
tradition of serving and engaging the community. “We will be active
in the community and on campus. We represent the University of Saint
Mary in everything we do, both on and off the field. That’s expected.
We hope the community will continue to show the support as we grow
this program—we wouldn’t mind some home crowds for our games
next spring either,” said Coach Kimsey.

CARING FOR OUR MISSION
PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
PROGRAM LAUNCHES IN 2016
The University of Saint Mary is working to establish the second physician
assistant (PA) program in the state of Kansas. In keeping with the spirit of the
Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, the program will focus on serving our society’s
expanding need for top-notch health care professionals due to the shrinking
number of primary care and family practice physicians.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT?
+
A PA practices under the supervision of a doctor and can work in any medical
specialty—like pediatrics, dermatology, or urgent care. Depending on a PA’s area
of practice, he or she may:
+ Give physical exams.
+ Diagnose and treat illnesses.
+ Prescribe medicines.
+ Order and evaluate lab tests.
+ Assist in surgery.
+ Make rounds in hospitals and nursing homes.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment for PAs to grow 38 percent by
2022, while Forbes lists physician assistant studies as their “No. 1 Best Master’s
Degree for Jobs.”

WHAT DO PAs STUDY?
Curriculum follows the medical school model, meaning PAs learn to practice medicine the way
doctors practice medicine. USM students will learn using the newest medical simulation
technology—usually only available to PA students in programs affiliated with a medical school.
Clinicals are also an important part of the hands-on curriculum. Clinical sites can be anywhere in
the country (as long as they have a contract with USM), but our faculty are focused on building
site relationships within a 60-mile radius of Leavenworth.
WHAT’S THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY?
“The latest high-fidelity simulation equipment lets a student witness a very realistic patient
response to the treatments. Like when oxygen or a medication is given, the student will see its
effects on breathing, blood pressure, heart sounds, and pulse. Simulators can even cry, bleed,
and blink,” said Program Director Joe Tritchler.
USM students will also learn anatomy in a virtual-cadaver lab using hardware that resembles an
operating room table and software displaying a very accurate 3D life-size body. Just like a real
cadaver, the virtual body can be rotated, cut, and examined—and students will be able to see
the body’s X-rays, breathing, and heart movements.
WHAT DOES THIS
MEAN FOR USM?
Development of the PA program has invited renewed conversations
about interprofessional education (IPE) at USM. Students from our
nursing, physical therapy, and health information management
programs already collaborate on real-world patient scenarios,
and want to see this collaboration grow to include our PA
students. Studies show this approach to thinking and learning
actually improves patient outcomes and professional success.
“The mission of this program compliments our university
mission and our values so well. We have expert faculty teaching
the sciences, and each one understands the importance of helping
students become professionals with strong interpersonal skills,”
said Dr. Bryan Le Beau, USM provost and vice president for
academic affairs. “We’re looking forward to welcoming a new
group of students—ready to find their God-given potential and
use their skills and talents to better our diverse world.”

I Gladly GIVE BECAUSE . . .
The generosity of the Sisters of Charity and the Jubilee Scholarship gave me the opportunity to
attend college. That generosity led me to the place I consider my second home—Saint Mary.
Mentors like Sister Barbara Sellers, Sister Mary Lenore Martin, Sister Susan Rieke, and
Van Ibsen encouraged and guided me throughout my four years, and they continue to inspire me
to do my very best.

I Happily GIVE BECAUSE . . .
The value-centered education at Saint Mary has significantly impacted my efforts in work
and in life. The university provides great opportunities for those wishing to better themselves
through academic study and athletic achievement. I give to support the university’s mission of
educating students of diverse backgrounds to realize their God-given potential—specifically
those who may not have access to the excellence that Saint Mary offers.

I Joyfully GIVE BECAUSE . . .
I had a wonderful college experience—due to the sisters’ loving care. I arrived at Saint Mary as
a very naïve 16 year old, and left Saint Mary as a responsible and respectful young lady. I was
not aware of how well prepared I was to adapt to life away from the protection of my family or
Saint Mary, but I was. I want to give to the place that cared for me.

CLASS OF 1964: REUNION PART II
On July 9, Mary Hannon Morin hosted a luncheon for her class of 1964 classmates. Some were unable to attend their 50th college
reunion this June, so Morin promised Paula Plunket Burgan she would invite everyone over. “Paula was unable to attend our reunion
because her 50th wedding anniversary was the same weekend. I told her I’d host a luncheon, in her honor, when she was in town,”
said Morin. Fifteen alums gathered, coming from as far away as Alaska and Texas. Both Sharon Clay and Jane Liebert, C’97, attended
from Saint Mary.

Saint Mary.
