Fall 2015
LITURGICAL PRESS
PA R I S H R ES O U R C ES
Dear Friends,
The fall of 2015 is a unique and exciting moment
for the Catholic Church and its pastoral mission
to support, nourish, and heal married couples
and families! As you know, the World Meeting of
Families will take place in Philadelphia September
22–25 (and Liturgical Press will be present!) and
culminate with the participation of Pope Francis in
the Festival of Families and Papal Mass September
26 and 27. Just a few weeks later, the synod of
bishops will meet in Rome October 4–25, to
continue discussions on marriage and family
issues that were initiated in a synod on the
same topic last year.
We at Liturgical Press have been working hard
to offer the strongest and most effective possible
service to the Church and to Catholics in the
United States during and beyond this remarkable
time. We have worked with some extraordinary
authors and developed several exciting new
projects that are intended to support the interests
and needs that are sure to develop as a result of
this fall’s events.
Please be sure to look over the information in this
catalog about Bridget Burke Ravissa and Julie
Donovan Massey’s Project Holiness: Marriage as a
Workshop for Everyday Saints and Mary M. Doyle
Roche’s Schools of Solidarity: Families and Catholic
Social Teaching. They’re both brand new and well
worth your time. Check out, too, the recently released
titles that you’ll find here on pages 28 and 29.
And of course, there’s the brand new This Economy
Kills: Pope Francis on Capitalism and Social Justice,
an engaging and very readable introduction to our
remarkable Pope’s thinking on these important
topics—which have everything to do with what
it means to live as families of faith in the world
today. Indeed, John Allen Jr. says the book
“sets the table better than almost anything
else for his trip to the United States.”
Come, Holy Spirit, upon our Church this fall!

THIS
ECONOMY
KILLS
Pope Francis on Capitalism
and Social Justice
Andrea Tornielli and Giacomo Galeazzi
Essential reading for understanding Pope Francis’s convictions about
the world we live in and how Christians are called to shape it.
When Pope Francis wrote in his apostolic letter
The Joy of the Gospel that the economy of the
West is one that “kills,” he was immediately
labeled by some as a Marxist. Criticisms came fast
and furious, not only from financial columnists and
conservative cable personalities, but also from
some Catholic commentators, especially in the
United States.
In This Economy Kills, two of the most
respected journalists covering the Vatican today
explore the pope’s teaching and witness on the
topic: the ways it relates to other topics like war,
the environment, and family life; its connections
to the teaching of his predecessors; and the
criticism it has generated, especially from the
direction of the United States. This fascinating
book includes the full text of an extended
interview the authors conducted with Francis on
the topic of capitalism and social justice,
appearing here in English for the first time.

“Andrea Tornielli and Giacomo
Galeazzi are among the most
informed journalists covering
the Vatican today, and this
book finds them at their best.
It’s a must-read primer on Pope
Francis’ social thought, and
sets the table better than
almost anything else for his trip
to the United States.”

“The book provides readers
with the background in church
social teaching they need to
understand what the pope is
saying. And, best of all, Tornielli
and Galeazzi let Pope Francis
speak for himself, presenting
here the full text of an interview
with the pope precisely on his
comments about the economy.”
Cindy Wooden
Catholic News Service Author of Luis Antonio Tagle: Leading by Listening
“Tornielli and Galeazzi bring into
focus one of Pope’s Francis’s
fundamental concerns. They are
meticulous in probing his
writings and pronouncements
on economic and financial
matters, concern for the poor,
defense of creation, and the big
business of war. They also look
seriously at the Pope’s toughest
critics. But the real value of this
book is that Tornielli and
Galeazzi bring us into an almost
personal dialogue with Pope
Francis—especially through an
exclusive interview—and help
us see how his authentic concern
for all people, especially those
who are poor and forgotten, is
at the heart of his ministry.”

Alternatives to the Jungle
Angus Sibley
Inequality, unemployment, degradation of our
environment: these and other practical
economic problems reflect faulty economic
theories. We have been led astray by ideas
that made some sense in the past but are
unsuited to our times and by ideas that are
fundamentally mistaken.
The Catholic Church has an extensive
body of teachings on economic and social
matters, too little known even among
Catholics, which offer practical alternatives
to the economics of the jungle. This book
offers clear explanations of major errors in
conventional economic thinking and shows
how the church’s teachings can guide us into
better ways.

The church has much to teach and
much to learn from families about
the gifts and challenges of building
a more just and compassionate
society. Families are schools of
solidarity, working each and every
day to deepen relationships within
the family itself and with other
families both near and far. In Schools
of Solidarity, Mary Doyle Roche
explains how families can resist
dehumanizing elements of our
culture (competitive consumption,
wastefulness, violence, etc.) and
transform the many arenas of
daily life (homes, workplaces,
neighborhoods, schools, and
parishes) so that they honor the
dignity of all people, especially
the poor and vulnerable.
Doyle Roche offers questions
and activities for discussion and
reflection in conjunction with each
of the major themes. The practical
activities she suggests encourage
families to explore social justice
issues and ways they might
transform unjust conditions in local
and even global contexts.
“This is the rare book that gets
precisely right the true meaning of the
phrase ‘family values.’ Grounding her
recommendations in the tradition of
Catholic social thought and bringing
its core values into dialogue with contemporary challenges, Roche invites
families to ‘turn outward to others’ and
to ‘flex their solidarity muscles.’
Readers will find this book accessible,
creative, probing, practical, and above
all joyful.”

Marriage as a Workshop for Everyday Saints
Bridget Burke Ravizza and Julie Donovan Massey
Project Holiness: Marriage as a
Workshop for Everyday Saints
celebrates the holiness of the
ordinary and the goodness of
married discipleship. Based on an
extensive qualitative study of longlasting Catholic marriages, Bridget
Burke Ravizza and Julie Donovan
Massey examine the virtues, values,
and practices that ground flourishing
marriages and lead married partners
to holiness.
“In Project Holiness: Marriage as a
Workshop for Everyday Saints, Julie
Donovan Massey and Bridget Burke
Ravizza invite us into sacred conversations with 50 holy couples who share
with us how they love, parent,
welcome, struggle, negotiate, suffer,
and celebrate. Weaving these insights
into the authors’ own familiarity with
other writers in theology and ethics,
we get to hold in our hands a
spectacular book that brings together
wisdom from a variety of sources. This
deceptively simple project reads so
expertly and easily that we finish it
convinced that theologians and the
people in the pews have so much to
learn from one another.”
James F. Keenan, SJ

“In Project Holiness, the experience of
marriage is narrated by couples who
are in the trenches, striving to respond
to the universal call to holiness. Their
candid and often poignant sharing of
friendship and sexuality, service and
hospitality, suffering and fidelity will
enrich the marriage of those who read
this well-researched and wise book.”

of Charity and Justice
William T. Ditewig
The deacon’s exercise of charity and
justice extends the loving hand of
God’s constant love and mercy to
all who are in need. The Vatican’s
Congregation for Catholic Education
has called this work “the ministry
most characteristic of the deacon.”
In The Deacon’s Ministry of
Charity and Justice, Deacon William
Ditewig focuses on this ministry as
a constitutive element of the nature
of the church itself—always flowing
from the ministries of word and sacrament and leading back to them,
never apart from them. Along with
a rich exploration of the scriptural,
historical, and theological foundation of the deacon’s practice of
charity and justice, Deacon
Ditewig—one of today’s foremost
experts on the permanent diaconate—develops specific and concrete principles for exercising these
ministries faithfully, authentically, and effectively.

Washing Feet
Imitating the Example of Jesus
in the Liturgy Today
Thomas O’Loughlin
More than half a century after
its introduction into the Easter
liturgy, the rite of the washing
of feet on Holy Thursday goes
to the heart of what it means
to take part in Christian
liturgy—as well as to live a
Christian life. In Washing Feet:
Imitating the Example of Jesus
in the Liturgy Today, Thomas
O’Loughlin explores the
significance of mutual foot
washing in early Christian
communities and in the rituals
of churches today.
Washing Feet is a sound
and engaging combination of
liturgical theology, historical
exploration, and practical pastoral guidance. Clergy, liturgy
committees, and RCIA leaders
involved in Holy Week liturgies will find this a useful and
accessible resource for understanding how this practice
is a key to how ordinary
Christians understand the
nature of the church and their
relationship to others within
their particular communities.

Bieke Vandekerckhove (born 1969) lives in Kuurne, Belgium. In 1988,
when she was a psychology major at the University of Leuven, she was
diagnosed with ALS and became paralyzed from the pelvis up. With roundthe-clock help from husband Bart Verhulst and various assistants, she has
led an active life of teaching, counseling, and writing for, among others,
Volzin and Tertio. Until recently she regularly conducted Zen meetings
and retreats at the Benedictine Sint-Andries Abbey in Zevenkerken,
Belgium. In 2014 Bieke Vandekerckhove received formal transmission as
Zen Master (Ch’an Ssu) in the Chinese Ch’an tradition from internationally
known Zen Master Prof. Ton Lathouwers, himself the Dharma-Successor
of Ch’an Master Teh Cheng, longtime head of the Guang Hua Ch’an School
in China. On the occasion, she received the name Xia Fan Zhi Guang,
meaning “Light of Kenosis.”
PCATF15
At the youthful age of nineteen
Bieke Vandekerckhove was
diagnosed with ALS (a degenerative
neurological disease, aka Lou
Gehrig’s disease). Unexpectedly,
three years later her disease went
into remission and, even though
partially paralyzed, she has lived
with ALS now for more than
twenty years.
In t went y- s even shor t
chapters, written at various points
in her life, the author shares her
search for meaning and strength.
Much to her own surprise, she
found both in the stillness of
contemplation, in the richness of
silence. The practice of Benedictine
spirituality and Zen meditation
became, as she says, the two lungs
through which she breathes.
Along the way of her painful
but illuminating journey, she shares
insights learned from artists of all
stripes, whether poets, painters,
sculptors, or moviemakers, and
from great contemplatives and
thinkers. The result is a work that
offers a deep trove of spiritual
wisdom for every reader, whether
afflicted with debilitating illness or
in perfect health.
“Listening, meditating, persevering in
the silence, Bieke Vandekerckhove,
. . . wrote a book that consoles.”

The priests and pastoral ministers of our day increasingly
reflect the multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual nature
of the church in the United
States. For a variety of reasons,
they come from diverse ethnic
backgrounds and countries of
origin. Seminaries and religious
communities are welcoming
international candidates with
the vision that diversity
strengthens the character and
mission of the church. Yet this
ecclesial diversity also comes
with unique challenges. To Be
One in Christ is a groundbreaking resource that delves into the
questions raised by these complexities and provides an indepth analysis from theological,
sociological, psychological,
cultural, and Protestant
perspectives.
Gerard McGlone and
Fernando Ortiz are both nationally recognized experts on
the integration of psychology
and spirituality in priestly life.
The book they have edited
investigates issues, answers
questions, and provides insights
on the increasingly multicultural settings and programs
affecting seminary and religious
formation. The comprehensive
resource will be welcome by
vocation directors, seminary

seminarians.

Catholic Cultures
How Parishes Can Respond to the
Changing Face of Catholicism
Patricia Wittberg, SC
From its earliest days, Christianity
has been lived and proclaimed in
the language and symbols of each
receiving culture. Today, these
cultures include the new ethnic
groups moving into our parishes.
They also include new generations
of Catholic young adults, whose
childhood experiences of their
faith are very different from those
of their elders. In Catholic Cultures,
Sister Patricia Wittberg, SC, offers
a view of Catholicism through the
eyes of Catholics from these
different cultures, so that we may
all be challenged to grow in our
reception of the Good News.
This book is an ideal resource
for parish ministers, educators, and
parents struggling with how to
evangelize and minister to
unfamiliar cultures. It is also a tool
for leaders trying to build a strong
community made up of members
who represent a variety of ethnic
backgrounds and ages.

The publication of The Roman
Missal, Third Edition offers an
opportunity for homilists to
explore the relationship between
the Sunday readings and the new
Roman Missal. Between the Ambo
and the Altar is the final book
(Year C) in a three-volume series
that presents scriptural, liturgical,
and preaching commentary for
Sundays, solemnities, and feasts
throughout the year.
Each Sunday’s resources are
presented in three sections:
exploring the Scripture, connecting
the Lectionary with the liturgy, and
a homiletic strategy. DeBona takes
the preacher through a meditation
on the language of the Missal,
suggests parallels to the Sunday
Lectionary, and gives practical
homiletic strategies using core
themes and images. It is hoped
that the commentary advances a
framework for homily preparation
so that preachers might “savor the
deep meaning of the word of God
which unfolds each year in the
liturgy” (Benedict XVI, Verbum
Domini 52).

Journey of Faith,
Journey of the Universe
The Lectionary and the New Cosmology
Ivan Nicoletto, OSB Cam
One of the most surprising
discoveries of our time is that the
universe is an unfolding and highly
creative story: a cosmogenesis. In
Journey of Faith, Journey of the
Universe, Br. Ivan Nicoletto reveals
how very insightful the Scripture
and its commentary tradition are to
these deep and cosmic perspectives,
thus surprising even seasoned Biblehearers with fresh understanding. It
will serve as rich nourishment to
anyone involved in the ministry of
preaching or who wants to explore
the Lectionary in a new way. The distinction of the book is
Br. Ivan’s capacity to speak with
depth and originality on both the
Scripture readings and the cosmic
spirituality, in fact, to blend them
usefully, insightfully. This selection
of homilies offered on various
Sundays and holy days of the threeyear Lectionary cycle offers fresh
insights on the readings for the day
to those who are also open to the
challenge to theology and Scripture
that comes from new cosmology.

A Window into the
Spirituality of Paul
Patrick J. Hartin
Paul’s spiritual journey is driven
by a transforming encounter
with the risen Lord. In A Window
into the Spirituality of Paul,
Patrick J. Hartin focuses on the
spiritual vision that emerges in
Paul’s own personal response to
Christ, found within his letters in
the New Testament. Not only
were early followers shaped by
Paul’s example, but throughout
history many saints and sinners
have given flesh to this rich
spiritual tradition. Their witness
is an integral part of how Hartin
helps us explore key aspects of
Paul’s spirituality.

The Hospitality of God
A Reading of Luke’s Gospel
Revised Edition
Brendan Byrne, SJ
Luke portrays the life and ministry
of Jesus as a divine “visitation” to
the world, seeking hospitality. The
One who comes as visitor and
guest becomes host and offers a
hospitality in which the entire
world can become truly human, be
at home, and know salvation in the
depths of their hearts. In this new
edition of The Hospitality of God,
Brendan Byrne, SJ, provides to-thepoint commentary on those parts
of Luke’s gospel that bring home to
people a sense of the extravagance
of God’s love for them.
The Hospitality of God
approaches Luke’s gospel through
the interpretive key of “hospitality.”
It looks at the gospel as a whole,
yet lingers upon scenes where the
theme of hospitality is particularly
prominent, such as the infancy
stories, Jesus at Nazareth, Jesus in
the house of Simon, the Good
Samaritan, Martha and Mary, the
banquet in 14:1-35, the Prodigal
Son, Jesus’ visit to the tax collector
Zacchaeus, the institution of the
Eucharist, and the Emmaus event.
This revised edition includes a
new introductory chapter titled
“Features of Luke’s Gospel,”
which includes distinctive themes
and motifs of the gospel that invite
all to join in the life-giving
hospitality of God. This revised
edition is an excellent resource for
students, teachers, and pastors
interested in Luke’s gospel or in
search of a helpful perspective for
pastoral and homiletic reflection
and preparation.

The Preaching of
Pope Francis
Missionary Discipleship and the
Ministry of the Word
Gregory Heille, OP
The Preaching of Pope Francis is an inspiring
and practical resource for preachers. It shares
the pope’s vision and example for the
preparation and delivery of effective and
engaging homilies and for laity invested in the
church’s ministry of the Word in a postVatican II pastoral context.
“Drawing on the pastoral actions and homilies
of Pope Francis to motivate all preachers,
Fr. Heille reminds us powerfully the good
preacher not only practices what he preaches
but also how he preaches.”
Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, President
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
“Fr. Heille’s book provides a broad frame by which
the student-preacher can gain substantial insights
into the missionary nuance of Pope Francis’
preaching style. The attentive selection, reading
and interpretation of the homilies that Fr. Heille
offers highlight the depth and universality of Pope
Francis’ missionary discipleship.”

Telling the Story of Jesus
Word—Communion—Mission
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle;
Foreword by Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle offers one of the
most inspiring and influential voices in the
global Catholic Church today. In Telling the
Story of Jesus, he encourages readers to be in
communion with Jesus, who is the story of
God. The cardinal tells us that this communion
is found in the Eucharist as well as among the
lost, the tired, and the abandoned people of
this world.
Cardinal Tagle combines biblical narration
and personal experience with sound
theological reflection so that the story of Jesus
becomes a story of love that leads to hope for
the poor, for the church, and for the life of the
entire world.
“Cardinal Tagle . . . offers a refreshing focus on
the New Evangelization with three presentations
on the Word of God, the Eucharist, and the
mission of the Church. He, with his wellrecognized ability as a true master catechist,
reflects on the core of the kerygma and how we
share it.”

The Prodigal Father
Angelo Scarano
Luke’s gospel contains a number of
passages about compassion. One of the
most beloved of these is commonly known
as the parable of the Prodigal Son. In The
Prodigal Father, Angelo Scarano focuses on
the distinctive role of the father in the
parable, the example he provides of being
transformed by a compassionate heart, and
the joy in celebrating the return of what was
loved and thought to be lost.
“Although you may think you already understand
the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Angelo Scarano’s
volume, The Prodigal Father, will provide you with
new insight to an old parable. This engaging
volume is a skillful blend of exegetical, patristic,
and spiritual insights that makes it the right
resource for discussion groups, spiritual reading,

understand the biblical process of mystagogy
and its meaning for one’s life.”

Resurrection
The Origin and Goal of the Christian Life
Frank J. Matera
“With his usual clarity and brilliance, Matera
presents a comprehensive mosaic of the multiple
images, metaphors, and expressions used by
each of the New Testament authors to speak of
Christ’s resurrection. Like a diamond whose
many facets refract the light differently with each
turn, so Matera illumines the theological meaning
of this mystery for Jesus’ followers.”
Barbara E. Reid, OP

“Fr. Frank Matera is both a distinguished biblical
scholar and a wise pastor. Both qualities are on
display in this exceptionally clear and thorough

‘Jesus of history’ and the ‘Christ of faith.’ To come
to know Jesus of Nazareth, try Jesus of Nazareth.”

“Lohfink’s portrait of Jesus is very much worth
reading. Because he looks to the gospels with a
sympathetic yet critical eye, he gives a faithful
interpretation of Jesus. And because he is faithful,
Lohfink offers a portrait that is challenging—
especially for the church today.”

John Courtney Murray’s Journey
toward Vatican II
Barry Hudock
Foreword by Drew Christiansen
“Barry Hudock’s account of the life and work of
John Cour tney Murray shows that the
development of Catholic teaching on religious
liberty cannot be reduced to abstract, numbered
paragraphs in an encyclical or catechism. It is a
riveting stor y of clashing personalities,
impossible possibilities, and hope against all
hope. It is the story of the Holy Spirit at work in
the church.”

What the Documents Say: Third Edition
Mark G. Boyer
“When you walk into a Catholic church building,
you know where everything should be. Or do
you? The rules governing liturgical space sprout
ever-new leaves due to a growing series of books
and decrees. Mark G. Boyer organizes this
legislation by theme, shows why the law says
what it does, and makes practical applications
that will affirm and surprise you. After reading this
book, you’ll see the insides of churches as you
never have before.”

Becoming the Psalms
A Spirituality of Singing and Praying the Psalms
Kathleen Harmon, SNDdeN
Cantors throughout the United
States and elsewhere have long
known Kathleen Harmon, SNDdeN,
as a reliable teacher and mentor in
how they understand and practice
their important ministry. In
Becoming the Psalms, she explores
the spirituality of the psalms, a
spirituality that shaped God’s
people in the past, forms the church
today, and leads us into the future.
Each chapter offers cantors who
pray and sing the psalms a better
understanding of the role of the
psalms in shaping faith.
Kathleen Harmon is known for
her contributions to Music Notes,
a popular column in the journal
Liturgical Ministry. Becoming the
Psalms showcases some of her
finest entries as well as new articles
published here for the first time
that consider the difference
between praying the psalms
privately and praying them
liturgically, as well as the function
of the responsorial psalm as
proclamation.
Kathleen Harmon, SNDdeN, is the music director for programs of the
Institute for Liturgical Ministry in Dayton, Ohio, and is the author of
numerous publications including The Mystery We Celebrate, The Song
We Sing: A Theology of Liturgical Music, The Ministry of Cantors, and
The Ministry of Music. She is also a contributor to the Living Liturgy™
family of resources, published by Liturgical Press. An educator and
musician, she facilitates liturgical music workshops and cantor formation
programs. She holds a graduate degree in music and a doctorate in liturgy.

English Proper
Chants
John Ainslie, Composer
Among the prayers of the Mass that vary from
day to day (the propers), the Roman Missal
includes an Entrance Antiphon and Communion
Antiphon. English Proper Chants is a collection
of beautiful, simple chant settings for these
antiphons, with English texts, for all of the
Sundays and Solemnities of the liturgical year. The project’s composer John Ainslie, an
internationally respected liturgist and musician,
believes that chant is a musical idiom that
continues to have an important (but not
exclusive) role in the Catholic liturgy. English
Proper Chants reflects his conviction that the
use of chant in English requires sensitive
handling in order to respect and reflect the
particular rhythms of the language.
Both melody (5-line modern notation) and
accompaniment editions are available. The
accompaniment edition is printed in a
convenient, coil-bound format that allows it to
lie flat on music stands, while the melody
edition is perfect bound (paperback). Indices
of antiphons and of psalms are included in
each. Pagination is identical in both editions for
easy combined use. Purchase includes
permission to reprint antiphon texts and music
from melody edition on one-time copies
(e.g., newsletters) for congregational use. All
purchasers of either edition receive access to
download digital images of any composition in
the book.

What’s the Smoke For?
And Other Burning Questions about the Liturgy
Johan van Parys
“What’s the Smoke For? is a down-to-earth blend of
etiquette and erudition on matters liturgical.
Consisting of ninety-one questions and answers in
areas such as liturgical art and architecture, prayer
and devotions, furniture and objects, posture and
gestures, vesture and the keeping of seasons, I would
highlight the author’s treatment of liturgical
praxis and theology as especially helpful. Highly
recommended for clergy, seminarians, and liturgical
ministers (as well as parish secretaries who may be
looking for material to fill out the weekend bulletin).”
Fr. Jan Michael Joncas
Artist in Residence and Research Fellow in Catholic Studies
University of St. Thomas

In Imagining Abundance,
Kerry Robinson offers an
inspirational and practical
guide to effective fundraising that is ideal for
anyone invested in a faith
community. Bishops, provincials, pastors, ministers,
executive and development directors and trustees of
faith-based organizations will benefit from this
healthy approach to the activity of fundraising that
situates successful development in the context of
ministry and mission.
“Kerry Alys Robinson is one of the great women in
the Catholic church today. Her new book is an indispensable tool for all fundraisers and philanthropists, as well as all charitable organizations, who
seek to help those in need. She brings a wealth
of experience, a probing mind and a deep respect
for the life of the spirit to her amazing work, and
now to her beautiful book. Highly recommended.”

Fr. Anthony Oelrich invites preachers and pray-ers to
explore more deeply what it means to see and not
see, to eat and believe. Along the way, we discover
in Christ Jesus all we hunger for and thirst after.
“Here is a small book that will get a big welcome
