Staff celebrated at annual Staff Recognition Event
(Bonnyville, Alberta – May 16, 2016) The
Northern Lights School Division Board of
Trustees recognized retirements, important
milestones and achievements of staff at its
annual Staff Recognition Event held in
Glendon on Friday, May 13.
“We are enormously proud of our staff and
the tremendous work they do for our
students every day,” said Board Chair Arlene
Hrynyk. “This is our opportunity to say thank
you and recognize their hard work and
dedication.”

selflessness and generosity in responding to
the Fort McMurray evacuation over the last
two weeks. Many NLSD staff spent countless hours volunteering, opened their homes to people from Fort
McMurray, and assisted in whatever way they could to help evacuees.
“As students continue to register at our schools over the next couple of weeks, I know they will be
greeted with kindness and compassion and that you will all provide them all with a safe place to learn
for however long they are with us,” said Cusson. “Thank you all for modeling the behaviour and virtues
that we seek to instill in all of the children entrusted to our care. I am so proud of all of you and proud to
work for Northern Lights School Division.”
This year’s event recognized 10 staff members who are retiring at the end of this school year or retired at
the end of the last school year. Deputy Superintendent Roy Ripkens, who is retiring this year, received a
standing ovation from those in attendance.

The Board also recognized staff who have achieved milestones of five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 50 and
even 60 years of service with the division. This year the division recognized 24 staff that have worked at
the division for 25 years or longer. Combined, they have 745 years of service with Northern Lights.
New to this year’s event was recognition of graduates from NLSD’s Leadership Academy. A total of 13
staff were recognized for completing Leadership Academy in 2015 and 2016.
The Board also recognized Laura Akana, its nominee for the Alberta School Boards’ Association’s Edwin
Parr Award.
Northern Lights School Division No. 69 provides a quality public education program with enhanced
learning opportunities to approximately 6,200 students in 28 schools in northeastern Alberta.
