Message from the Dean
I
t is my pleasure to introduce our Honor Roll of Donors. This
message is my first formal opportunity as dean of Southwestern
to thank those who support the law school. I have already had the
pleasure of meeting many of those listed in these pages, and I look
forward to getting to know many more in the coming months and
years. We are very grateful for the loyalty and support
acknowledged throughout this publication.
The first purpose of this message therefore is simply to say thank
you to our donors for their generous contributions.
My other purposes look toward the future. I hope as dean to
participate in activities at Southwestern that will multiply the
reasons for our donors to invest in this school. Our history is rich.
We led the way especially in educating deserving individuals who
otherwise were precluded from pursing a legal education. Our
graduates can be found in all areas of the legal profession, in
business, and in the government. The numbers in government
and the judiciary are especially striking.
Our task in the future is to build on our historical mission while
moving the law school to the forefront of legal education. There
is much we can do in terms of curricular innovation, in finding
resources for increased financial aid, in recruiting topnotch faculty
whose research and teaching will fit the Southwestern mission,
and in building an environment that maximizes the chances for
our students to pass the bar exam and successfully navigate the
rapidly changing legal world. We need the help of our friends
listed in these pages to succeed in our ambitions.
We need the help of others as well. To our loyal core of
supporters, therefore, I want to make one further point. We
are reaching out with numerous receptions, individual and group
meetings, written communications, and other means to recruit
friends and classmates into the enterprise of helping Southwestern
to realize its great potential. With the help of our core group,
we hope in a few years that we will be able to look back on this
publication as the starting point for a major reinvestment in all
aspects of Southwestern Law School – with major beneficial
consequences for our students and the communities that
they serve.
Sincerely,
Bryant G. Garth
Dean

Honor Roll of Donors
T
he publication of Southwestern’s Honor Roll of
Donors is a tribute to our alumni and friends whose
contributions were received between July 1, 2004 and
June 30, 2005. These generous gifts underlie the
continued development of the law school and its
growing recognition as an institution of excellence, as
demonstrated so clearly in the academic achievements
of its students and the lives and careers of its alumni.
Such recognition also illuminates the value of a
Southwestern education to colleagues in the legal
profession, clients and the public.
For many benefactors, a sense of gratitude is the first
inspiration for their gift. But there are many others, and
some have chosen more than one avenue for their
giving. Among them:
• to honor or memorialize a family member or
friend, especially one who has been associated
with the school;
• to provide support to the library or specific academic
or cocurricular programs;
• to encourage financially needy students, a particular
group of students, or interest in a special area of law;
or
• to help provide a solid future for the new generation
of legal professionals
The result is an outpouring of generosity in the form
of gifts and endowments that support scholarship
programs, technology, capital improvements, library
collections, lecture series, and professorships.
Whatever the reason for giving, the focus or size of
the gift, the entire law school community extends its
gratitude to each donor. Yours is an investment in
the future through the next generation of
Southwestern graduates.
Note: While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of these records, readers are
encouraged to notify the Development Office (213.738.6814; [email protected])
regarding any corrections or additions. Gifts received after June 2005 will be acknowledged in
a subsequent donor report.

“I’m very grateful to Southwestern and I always want to do everything and
anything I can to help. When I enrolled, I was working at a job that I really

enjoyed. Southwestern gave me the opportunity to pursue my professional
aspirations as well as my law degree by being able to go to school at night.
Every Southwestern graduate ought to be very proud of the accomplishments
the school has made in the last quarter century, particularly upgrading the
physical plant and the curriculum. And all of us who went there have an
obligation to support it.”

“I believe in supporting my alma mater, from which I have derived many

benefits over the past three decades. The school has made great strides over

the years and I’m very proud of it. A lot of it has to do with the steps the law

school has taken to properly and significantly develop the campus, which to
me is a very great motivator for giving back. I’m just excited to be able to
help support the work that Southwestern is doing in developing its reputation

“I would encourage anyone who’s gone to Southwestern to give because of
Cathy D. Younger ’77
what the law school has done for them. It’s every alum’s duty to give back to
Vice President and Secretary,
the extent that they can. We want Southwestern to be a significant force in
UNOVA
the local community and attract high caliber people. All the contributions help
in that regard. It’s at a tipping point right now. Especially with the new dean,
[strong donations] could really help catapult the school to the next level.”

Establishing a
Named Fund at Southwestern
s
outhwestern donors may endow a scholarship, loan fund, professorship, library collection or program in the name of a
designee of their choice. An endowment fund is a gift in perpetuity that provides one or more awards each year, from the
interest accrued on the fund principal, to a recipient or recipients who meet the donor’s specified criteria. The minimum gift
(which can be paid over a period of five years) is $10,000 for an endowed scholarship, loan fund, or lectureship and $250,000
for an endowed professorship. A donor may also name a restricted scholarship or book fund. This type of contribution provides
direct awards, as the entire gift is disbursed to the selected recipient(s) based on the donor’s criteria. Although there is no specific
dollar amount required, $1,000 is the recommended minimum gift for a restricted fund. Listed below are funds established in
the names of individuals and groups by alumni, students, faculty, trustees and friends.1

Justice,
California Court of Appeal,
Second Appellate District
“Southwestern allowed me to get where I am now. I didn’t need a scholarship;
I was fortunate…But there are people who do. A significant number of them
are working during the day and attending school at night. Southwestern, to
me, is a school that gives a second chance to those who are out working and
decide they want to go to law school. If they need financial assistance, they
should have it. ”

Matching Gifts Leverage Individual Contributions
Does your company or law firm match your gift? Many do, sometimes doubling the size of the individual contribution.
Among Southwestern’s matching gift benefactors are Bank of America, Boeing, The Capital Group of Companies
Charitable Trust, Citigroup Foundation, The Walt Disney Foundation, ExxonMobil Foundation, General
Electric Foundation, Masco Corporation, May Department Stores Company, Pharmacia Foundation, Southern
California Edison, Washington Mutual Foundation, and UNOVA, Inc.
If a matching gift program is part of your organization’s outreach efforts, be sure to include the appropriate form with
your donation.

George J. Stephan ’75
Partner,
“Southwestern is a fabulous law school. It gave me a wonderful opportunity.
I think it’s important to give back so that other people can have the same good
Stephan, Oringher,
fortune that I did. Southwestern produces the best trial lawyers and judges,
Richman & Theodora
and as a trial lawyer I found my education to be invaluable. It’s important to
provide the faculty with the state-of-the-art teaching facilities and to provide
scholarships to students who need them.”

Planned Giving Opportunities at Southwestern
O
ver the years, a number of alumni and friends have asked what they can do
for Southwestern above and beyond their annual support. While many might
like to make substantial charitable gifts in their lifetime, they have concerns about
the financial uncertainties that may be encountered during the remainder of their
lives. “Planned Giving” accomplishes the long-term support of Southwestern while
offering significant tax advantages and a financially secure future.
Benefits of Planned Giving
for donors:
• Significant tax benefits while
maintaining financial security
for them and their families.
• The ability to make a larger gift
than might otherwise be
possible.
• The opportunity to establish
a permanent memorial to a
relative, friend or in one’s
own name.
Benefits of Planned Giving
for Southwestern:
• A lifelong relationship
with donors.
• An enhanced capability to
undertake large-scale projects
such as scholarship and loan
funds, new facilities and
equipment, the Law Library,
faculty chairs and support
for other aspects of the
academic program.
• An occasion to recognize the
generosity of donors, through
the naming of funds or projects
which will live on in the donor’s
honor or in memory of another.
The following are brief
explanations of some
of the most popular planned
gifts using Southwestern as
the charitable beneficiary.
Appreciated Property
This includes gifts of stocks, bonds,
real estate, or other appreciated
assets that cause capital gains to
be realized when the asset is sold.
By giving the asset to charity
instead of selling it, capital gains
tax can be avoided.
Life Insurance
Most people purchase life
insurance policies to protect
themselves and their loved ones,
often at a time when their estate
is small. They want to make sure
their beneficiaries receive funds
immediately. Long-standing
insurance policies are sometimes
no longer necessary where
substantial other investments and
benefits will yield a good income
for the family after the donor’s
lifetime. Life insurance could be
the most sensible way for donors
to make a significant charitable
gift and take advantage of a
number of benefits:
• The donor can get a tax
deduction. By naming
Southwestern as the beneficiary,
the donor may receive a
valuable income tax charitable
deduction and reduce the size of
their taxable estate. A gift of life
insurance also reduces the “bite”
from estate taxes — proceeds
from the policy will be fully
excludable from the estate.
• The donor’s income won’t be
reduced. Unlike a gift of an
income-producing asset, a gift
of an insurance policy won’t
reduce current income.
• The donor’s cash flow may
increase. If the donor stops
paying the policy premiums,
they will enjoy an increase in
spendable income. Or if they
continue paying the premiums
on a policy donated to
Southwestern, the donor is
allowed an annual income tax
deduction. Life insurance is
more valuable than ever.
By a gift of insurance to
Southwestern, donors can save
taxes and increase spendable
income. Such gifts are easily
arranged; ownership can be
transferred without the expenses
associated with wills, codicils or
trust formation. In concert with
the donor’s financial advisors,
Southwestern can help the donor
learn and evaluate how to get the
most from a contribution in the
form of life insurance.
Charitable Lead Trust
A lead trust is one created by
a donor to pay income to
Southwestern during the trust
term, after which the corpus then
passes either back to the donor or
to another beneficiary. If the lead
trust is created during the donor’s
lifetime, an income tax deduction
will be allowed for the present
value of the income interest
Southwestern receives. If the lead
trust is instead testamentary, an
estate tax deduction of the present
value of the income interest will
be allowed.
Charitable Remainder Trust
The opposite of a lead trust, a
remainder trust permits a donor,
spouse and children to retain the
income from assets set aside now
in trust for Southwestern.
The donor establishes a trust that
pays them and their spouse (or
other income beneficiary) income
for life, with Southwestern
receiving the corpus of the trust
at the end of their lifetimes.
The donor can receive either a
fluctuating income based on a
fixed percentage of the trust’s
annual value (unitrust) or a
fixed income that is determined
at the creation of the trust
(annuity trust).
27
There is typically no income, gift
or estate tax payable on the initial
transfer of the assets to the trust.
Furthermore, donors enjoy an
immediate income-tax deduction
based on the present value of the
gift that Southwestern will receive
at the end of the trust term. If the
assets transferred to the trust have
appreciated since being acquired,
then capital gains tax will also be
avoided and the income tax
deduction will be based on the
higher, appreciated value of that
asset. An additional advantage
might be increased income if lowyield property is donated and the
proceeds are invested in higheryield assets within the trust.
Charitable Gift Annuity
The Gift Annuity Program
offers a simple, secure and
rewarding way to support the
future of Southwestern.
Cash or other assets can be
transferred to Southwestern’s
annuity program to enjoy
guaranteed regular payments for
life. The amount of each payment
is determined by the age(s) of the
annuitant(s) when the annuity is
initially funded. Once the payments
are determined, they remain fixed
for the annuitant’s lifetime.
A gift annuity may also be
established for someone in the
donor’s will. A donor can also
make a gift now, and defer or
postpone the income until a
later date.
INSPIRED GIVING • TIMELESS GIFTS
“I enjoy giving to Southwestern. I believe it’s important to show support
to the school that gave me my chance to establish a career. I would never
Doron M. Tisser ’81
Attorney at Law
have had the opportunities in my career if I had gone to any other school.
I think there should be a continuing appreciation for that. And the best
way to show that appreciation is by donating – both financially and with
time and service. I know the school will put the money to its best use,
whether it’s helping students with scholarships or improving the buildings
or updating equipment.”
The payments will then be based
on the original contribution plus
accumulated interest. At the death
of the last annuitant, your gift
comes to Southwestern without
the delay of probate. The donor is
entitled to a current income tax
deduction for the present value of
a gift to Southwestern, and part of
each payment they receive will
also be tax-free. The donor is also
able to avoid capital gains tax
upon the transfer of an appreciated
asset to the program.
Charitable Bequest
The most widely used method for
planned giving is a bequest in a
Last Will and Testament. A
charitable bequest may be in the
form of cash, real estate, securities,
or other property. There are several
ways to provide for Southwestern
by bequest:
• A General Bequest of a specified
dollar amount or percentage of
the donor’s estate.
• A Specific Bequest of a
particular asset, such as a savings
account, stock, or real property.
• A Contingent Bequest, if the
primary beneficiaries fail to
survive the donor. A contingent
bequest means that
Southwestern would receive
assets from your estate only if
the other named individual(s)
do not survive the donor.
• A Residual Bequest of the
balance of the estate after
expenses, taxes, and general and
specific bequests have been paid.
In this case, Southwestern
receives whatever is left of the
estate after the other named
beneficiaries receive their share.
• A Testamentary Trust created
by will provides lifetime support
and payments to one or more
beneficiaries, the balance
of the trust later passing
to Southwestern.
An unrestricted bequest may be
made, or the donor may designate
the specific purpose for which it
is to be used. For example, the
bequest may establish an endowed
fund in the donor’s name or in
memory of a person or persons
they wish to honor.
Outright bequests, whatever the
amount, are free from federal estate
tax, California estate tax, and the
inheritance taxes of many other
states. The resulting tax savings
are substantial; in a large estate
they may be more than half the
value of the gift to Southwestern.
Charitable bequests may be
provided by making a new will
or by adding a codicil to the
existing will. To ensure that the
donor’s exact intentions are carried
out, wills or codicils should be
prepared by or with the advice of
a personal attorney.
Planning Your Giving
Alumni and friends considering
a planned gift are encouraged to
consult with their financial
advisors on how the tax benefits of
contributing to Southwestern may
apply to their particular situation.

Celebrating
O
ver 900 guests from Southern California's legal, business and arts communities gathered on a mild evening in
11
October 2004 to help Southwestern celebrate the completion of its mid-city campus. The Honorable Anthony M.
Kennedy of the United States Supreme Court was the keynote speaker, and popular Public Television host Huell
Howser of KCET served as master of ceremonies for the event. Through a ten-year, $29 million restoration and
adaptive reuse effort, Southwestern has transformed the historic Bullocks Wilshire landmark, a treasured Art Deco
icon, into the heart of its campus that now houses the law school’s state-of-the-art law library and classroom
facilities, and the high-tech Julian C. Dixon Courtroom and Advocacy Center. During the ceremony, the law library was
officially named the Leigh H. Taylor Law Library in honor of Southwestern's dean emeritus, who spearheaded the

Gala Highlights
A Special Guest Speaker
Students in the First Amendment Seminar and Constitutional Law class were given a rare opportunity to meet with Justice Kennedy who
discussed the Court’s seminal decision in New York Times v. Sullivan (which constitutionalized the law of libel), as well as Branzburg vs. Hayes
(in which the Court considered the First Amendment rights of the press to protect confidential sources). Justice Kennedy also met with the faculty
and addressed the entire student body on Friday morning, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of how the Court functions, and entertaining
questions from the audience.
Taylor Library Naming
The Leigh H. Taylor Law Library now bears its new name on the glass door entrance and along the central corridor, where a
formal portrait of the honoree, now Dean Emeritus, hangs. (Also pictured, Justice Arleigh Woods announcing the renaming
during the gala program.)

“I like to give back to Southwestern because the professors have a real
commitment and a passion for teaching the students. I’m a better lawyer
because of the professors, as well as the administration...I also believe the
cutting edge and progressive direction of the law school’s Biederman Institute
is vital to the practice of entertainment law and I want to support it as well.”

Commencement 2005 a
Celebration of Achievement
A
buzzing crowd of over 3,000 gathered inside
the beautiful and historic Shrine Auditorium
on Sunday, May 22 for Southwestern’s 90th
commencement ceremonies, which celebrated the
achievements of the 314 graduates, as well as the
contributions of two of the law school’s most
cherished leaders.
Dennis P.R. Codon ‘77, who was elected chair of
Southwestern’s board of trustees in December, presided
over commencement for the first time. In his opening
remarks, Codon offered a warm tribute to Dean Leigh
H. Taylor, who was to become Dean Emeritus in July.
“We are all indebted to Leigh Taylor for his inspired
and visionary leadership of our law school for the past
27 years,” said Codon, “and for the extraordinary
contributions he has made to American legal education
and the legal profession for more than three decades.”
The Honorable Joyce L. Kennard of the California
Supreme Court was the keynote speaker. The Indonesianborn justice, who in her own life overcame tremendous
personal adversity, urged the graduates to view the law
not as a mere occupation, but as a profession – as
distinguished by a duty to place service of the public
good before one’s own economic self interest.

standard of ethics and fair play that one can
become truly respected.”

Justice Kennard also warned the graduates against
enabling clients to violate societal morals, even within
the bounds of the law. “It is only by adhering to the
highest standard of ethics and fair play that one can
become truly respected,” she said. “May you always
be mindful of these precepts, and may you hold onto
your ideals.”
An honorary Doctor of Laws degree was presented to
retired judicial officer Justice Arleigh Maddox Woods
‘53, who served as chair of Southwestern’s Board of
Trustees for 10 years. Justice Woods, who served on the
California Superior Court and Court of Appeal for 16
years, encouraged the graduates to stay connected to
the law school and take an active role in its success. “It
is one of the most rewarding aspects of the service you
can render to the law,” she said.
Finally, the graduates were presented with diplomas;
309 received Juris Doctor degrees and five were
awarded LL.M. degrees in Entertainment and Media
Law. The exuberant graduates then spilled out onto the
courtyard in front of the Shrine, joined by their proud
families, friends and faculty, as well as Justice Kennard.
After plenty of hugging and posing for photos under
the hot sun and clear blue sky, the crowd slowly
dispersed, as the graduates went off to embark on
the next step in their journeys.
