MYRTLE BEACH GOLF W hat do the following numbers mean to Myrtle Beach Golf – 1927, 60 and 100? These numbers are what set Myrtle Beach apart from any other golf destination and are the reason Myrtle Beach is called “The Golf Capital of the World.” 1927 – Golf is born along the Grand Strand. Affectionately referred to as “The Granddaddy,” Pine Lakes Country Club opened for play in 1927. It is called The Granddaddy because it was the first course in Myrtle Beach and laid the seasons, Myrtle Beach wouldn’t be open year round. But, the shoulder seasons of September – November and February – May are the best times to experience all Myrtle Beach has to offer. The spring golf season showcases courses that have awakened from their winter slumber. Trees and flowers are in bloom, dormant grasses turn emerald and the air is pleasantly warm providing a chance to thaw for those visiting from colder climates. Fall golf in Myrtle Beach is just as spectacular. It offers mature growth which means precision shot making Welcome to 60 – The number of miles of coastline that make up the area known as the Grand Strand. The Grand Strand stretches from just south of Pawleys Island, SC to just over the North Carolina border in the Brunswick Isles. This 60 mile stretch offers varied views and natural terrain that adds to the beauty and distinction of Myrtle Beach golf. On the South end, golfers will experience “Plantation” style courses. These courses are set on old rice plantations. Many are lined with centuries-old Live Oak trees that are draped with Spanish moss. These courses are set on the inland side of Highway 17 but still have plenty of wetlands that come into play. The Central part of Myrtle Beach “The Golf Capital of the World!” foundation for golf in Myrtle Beach as it is known today. Over the years, the number of courses has grown and includes such award winning courses as The Dunes Golf and Beach Club – host to six Senior Tour Championships; Caledonia Golf and Fish Club – one of “America’s Top 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses” and Wachesaw Plantation East – host to four LPGA tournaments. Myrtle Beach has grown into a modern day mecca for golf all thanks to the vision of the Miles family some 82 years ago. And without golf to carry Myrtle Beach in the “shoulder” that keeps you out of the rough or gets you over the trees that tend to hide the green on many holes. Fall also means one last chance for championship golf before putting the clubs away for winter. GOLF Planner 7 MYRTLE BEACH GOLF stretches from the ocean inland to the west. These courses range from modern day “grip it and rip it” designs to links style courses that punish errant shots. The Northern courses run on both sides of the highway which gives golfers some variety. These holes border the salty marshes that rise and fall with the ocean tide. On these holes the time of day really can mean the difference between laying up and going for it. The inland holes – many by top names in the game – feature holes shaped by 100 – This number may not seem like much, but when it stands for the number of golf courses in one destination it stands for a lot. That’s right, there are 100 golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area and we’re not counting all the mini golf courses either. No, there are 100 bonafidé courses by top designers and top Featuring Courses Designed by Renowned Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Rees man that will test the most skilled golfer with mounds, railroad tie lined bunkers and sand traps galore. GOLF Planner 9 The Founders Club at Pawleys Island, SC F ounders Club sits upon the original site of the former Sea Gull Golf Club, which opened in 1965 as one of the first golf courses in Pawleys Island. In 2008 after two years and $7 million in renovations, Founders Club opened its doors as the newest golf course on the Grand Strand. While Founders Club may be the newest course on the Grand Strand golf scene, this award-winning championship course designed by architect Thomas Walker, masterfully embodies both new and old in its strategic design, challenging layout and classic low country feel. Walker successfully blended the course design into the natural surroundings of the low country backdrop by combining native area vegetation with innovative course elements such as Emerald Bermuda, a newly released strand of grass from Champion Turf Company. Recently named one of the “Top 30 Places to Play in South Carolina,” the Founders Club measures 6,910 yards and offers a choice of five sets of tees at each hole with yardage to match any golfer’s skill level. While minimal cart paths, well-maintained greens and a new irrigation and drainage system ensure top quality conditions, the dramatic canvas of wide fairways, bunker complexes and large greens makes this 18 hole, par 72 course notoriously known as a course “that looks harder than it plays.” State of the art GPS technology in all of the Founders Club golf carts offers players innovative insight into the course with accurate yardages and graphics at each hole. After you finish your round on the course, enjoy a meal or beverage overlooking the 10th and 18th holes at the Founders Club 5,000 square foot clubhouse. The low country design offers a wrap around porch, pro shop, locker rooms, dining area, meeting facilities with fireplace and a full bar. Eighteen of the Most Visually Stunning and 10 GOLF Planner The Founders Club at Pawleys Island, SC A Course Review by Mike Maddox of www.WorldGolf.com ~ July 01, 2009 Very interesting design/layout ... never dull. We played from middle tees, as back tees were being renovated. Hit every club in bag, and hit 5 different clubs from par 4 and 5 tees. Cart paths are minimal, as waste bunkers double as paths. Great experience and value. I was told that the course is an old one that has been redesigned in recent years. Kudos for job well-done. Good shots rewarded, bad ones penalized. Were refurbishing tee boxes and greens were recovering from a fungus and were a little thin, but rolled/held well. All staff very friendly/helpful . . . real people. Loved the GPS in carts. Nice and classy, but not flashy. Masterfully Crafted Holes You Won’t Soon Forget. GOLF Planner 11 COURSE REVIEWS International Club When Jack Davis took ownership of the International Club in 2005, the first thing he did was order 365 palm trees and have them planted throughout the course. Davis bought the palm trees because he liked them, but the message it sent was clear: under his direction, International Club would strive to improve everyday. More than four years later, evidence of Davis’ commitment are obvious throughout the property, and Myrtle Beach golfers are getting the message. The clubhouse has been repainted and re-carpeted, and new trees, bushes and flowers have been seamlessly integrated into the property. With the addition of new tee boxes and a maintenance International is a fun course to play. It’s in excellent condition, the greens are as fast as any and the course offers the opportunity to post a decent number without being a pushover. International isn’t among Golf Digest’s “100 Greatest Public Courses,” but it’s a facility that gets better every year. If you are looking for good golf and good value, you owe it to yourself to checkout International Club. August 5, 2009 By Chris King For www.GolfHoliday.com November 28, 2007 By Jeffrey White Contributor to WorldGolf.com Check~Out This Selection of Some of budget that has added to International Club’s aesthetic appeal and conditioning throughout the year, course improvements have been no less dramatic. The result of that work is a course that earned 4 stars in Golf Digest’s most recent “Best Places to Play” guide and provides the type of quality and value that has helped make Myrtle Beach America’s most popular golf destination. 12 GOLF Planner Prestwick Country Club Prestwick Country Club in Surfside Beach, S.C. is a Pete and P.B. Dye designed golf course that employs berms, mounding and other links elements that recall its Scottish namesake, the host of the first British Open Championship. This is one of the standouts in Myrtle Beach golf. At a shade over 7,000 yards from the tips, Prestwick has enough length to it to challenge the low handicapper. But there are five other sets of tees, a nice feature for higher handicaps, especially as there are plenty of ways to find trouble here. Water comes into play on eight holes, and other holes make use of Dye-trademark mounding and bunkering. You don’t have to think too much about your club selection here - you can swing away - and it’s often fine to be a little long, as the Dyes have built many greens to slope back towards you. The course is kept in meticulous conditions, the staff is efficient and pleasant, and the rangers keep the pace of play moving. There’s plenty to remark on, but one keeps coming back to those early morning hours on the course itself. There might not be a more beautiful time or place to play golf in Myrtle Beach. Indian Wells Golf Club Indian Wells is a solid pick for a mid-priced golf course in the Grand Strand thanks to an ingenuitive design that employs lots of doglegs and maneuvering around trees and lakes - plus course conditions that make you think you’re on a premium-priced golf course. The Bermuda greens are usually kept in speedy condition, which should delight lower-handicaps with smooth strokes, they stand to roll in a few bombs here. Club amenities include GPS in all golf carts, a small driving range and two putting/chipping greens. The clubhouse has a small grill that serves hot breakfast and lunch plates, a pro shop with equipment and COURSE REVIEWS even more apparel, and a small locker room. Indian Wells is part of the Classic Golf Group, and green fees peak at $89, but off- season rates drop to as low as $40. And as with all Myrtle Beach golf courses, it can be booked cheaper through a golf package. In the late 90’s Palmer visited the future site of Rivers Edge Golf Club along the Shallotte River and declared that the the greens. The new greens are Seadwarf Paspalum and are sure to add even more to your round. October 1, 2009 By: Henry Shade Arrowhead Country Club Arrowhead Country Club is just a short five minute trip outside of Myrtle Beach on Highway 501, and should be included as a must play on your next golf vacation. Raymond Floyd designed this course that was built in 1994. The course is actually three 9-hole courses, so you can either play two times on your trip and only repeat nine holes (they offer special replay rates within seven days of your original round). Or, if you are feeling particularly outside of North Myrtle Beach is the course you are looking for. Crown Park is kind of like the “Crown Jewel” of North Myrtle the Areas Most Talked About Courses! location had a great deal of potential to be very special. In September 1999, Rivers Edge opened its doors to the public and has continued to grow as a top requested course. Over the last ten years only a few minor changes have occurred at the course. Just before opening, Hurricane Floyd visited the area and took some trees with it. The course rebounded and opened on schedule to rave reviews from golfers and media alike. Very recently the course closed for a short period to renovate rested, play all 27 in the same day. No combination of two nines stretch longer than 6,700 yards, so playing all 27 might just be doable for some. Some golfers may see the total yardage and decide that the driver will get a rest day. But, some holes are just too tempting to go for it, so have your driver handy just incase. Case in point, hole #2 on the Waterway’s nine is one of those tempting holes. It features a dog leg left that is tree lined and goes around a pond. From the back tees, be prepared to carry your drive 290 yards to make it over the water and onto the green. Arrowhead is a great course that suits many golfers of all skill levels. Be sure to play it your next time in Myrtle Beach. Beach. The course is carved through the Carolina Pines and hasn’t fallen prey to developers. That’s right; Crown Park has no homes in sight. So, the only obstacles you will encounter during your round are tall pines, rolling terrain and TifEagle greens. Crown Park is a great find and well worth the short trip from North Myrtle Beach. Not only is the course playable, quiet and well maintained it also is a great price especially for all the price includes.
