Jerry’s Notes
Our May Rally was a hit with all of us who
attended. Wonderful place, very peaceful. We
had nine trailers and one apt. rented. The apt.
was very nice with plenty of room. Sandy Kalata
had the apt. Great to have you with us Sandy.
Jim Creek Recreation area is a military
installation and covers a large area. The camp
ground is spread out with a lot of tent sites and
several small cabins that can be rented. There
are two lakes about five miles from the camp
ground. You drive on a single lane (with pullouts)
mountain road to get to the first lake. Beautiful
lake and scenery. You can rent boats, and there is fishing here if you like. It was
well worth the drive. There are two lakes, called Twin Lakes. You walk to the
second lake. The trail was closed to the second lake due to washouts from our
rainy season.
Thursday, several members met at Denny's and had lunch, and then caravanned
on to Jim Creek led by David Sams. Hosts for this Rally were Bruce and Joan
Rohm. They did an excellent job. They reserved the camp sites and did all of the
leg work (etc.) needed to get us in. Friday evening was a catered dinner. We had
barbequed ribs and chicken, beans, mac and cheese and corn bread. Members
brought salads and deserts. I think we all got our fill.
Saturday evening’s dinner was spaghetti and salad, club furnished, and prepared
by Bruce and Joan. Very good. Later there was an ice cream social. One scoop a
dollar, or two scoops two dollars. Joan had warned us that one scoop was big, and
it was, with extras to put on. It was mmmm good!
Members enjoying this Rally-- Tom and Marilyn Beach, Wendell and Elsie Bonner,
Sandy Kalata, Jim Kolhoff and Sue Thompson, Scotty and Susan O'Neal, Rich and
Nancy Peebles, Bruce and Joan Rohm, David and Marilynn Sams, Dick and Jeanne
Sherwood, and Jerry and Karen Gilliam.
The weather was great Thursday and Friday. A couple of showers Saturday and
rain on Sunday. Thank you Bruce and Joan for all of your hard work and a great
Rally.
It’s hard to believe we are fast approaching our third Rally. June 16th—19th. This
will be in eastern WA at Coulee Playland Resort in Electric City. Hosts will be Don
and Susie Jensen. Sounds like they have it planned out and should be a lot of fun.
If we are going to have good weather anywhere, it should be here. Hope to see
most of you June 16th.
Take Care, and good traveling. Jerry

Dana Point is about a half hour south of Newport
Beach. This is an unusual piece of property in that
Beach Road is a gated community and each
home/duplex is on the beach. We actually own the
property to the water’s edge. On the other side of the
road is the railroad, so you do get the noise from
AmTrack and the freight trains. Ours has not been
redone and has an old charm about it that we have
emphasized with Hawaiian print fabrics, teak patio
furniture and bamboo furniture on the inside. The
homes that have been remodeled are selling for $3$10 million. San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente
are within a 10-minute drive, and all three beach
communities have great restaurants and shopping. We
have just repainted, re-upholstered and landscaped.

BONNER’S BITS —
A Story with No Ending
When I told of the time we were liberated from
the POW camp, I left out one incident. This
experience haunts me to this day.
Having entered combat as a replacement, I had
no friends with whom I had trained. In general,
each deployment was with a different group, so
you had only yourself and, especially in combat,
any friendship usually did not last very long. An
extremely lonely and scary experience. As a
result, on that day of liberation, I was mostly by
myself and, as I look back, rather foolish.
to her knees. With tears coming down her face,
she laid in front of me and begged me not to hurt
what was apparently left of her family. Right or
wrong, this was the message I received, and I
slowly raised my hand and backed away.
I often wonder what became of these people who
were trapped in a no-man’s land with several
thousand prisoners on the loose just a few blocks
away. I turned and went back to the compound.
We flew out the next day.

As the afternoon played out and began to cloud
over, I found myself walking along the road
where there were homes. These homes I
assumed were deserted until I saw a young boy
among some trees about a hundred feet away.
We saw each other at the same time and just
stood there and stared at each other; then he
ran. With that, I realized I could be in danger; I
had no weapon, was alone, and could easily be
hurt. It was beginning to get dark.
As I walked back to the compound past all the
darkened houses, I
came across one that
had a light coming
from inside. There was
no power, so it had to
be either a candle or
lantern. The house
was built about three
feet above the ground,
so I went closer to
satisfy my curiosity. I saw a young girl, probably
in her teens, standing over a wood stove cooking
something; next to her was an old man, white
haired with a long beard. I walked closer and
was about to ascend the steps when the front
door opened and a middle-aged woman came
running out, shouting in German. From her
actions, I assumed she thought I had a gun. I
stopped and she continued to shout in German,
but in a pleading manner, and then she dropped
North Cascade News
Nancy Conrad sent this picture of a white bear,
otherwise known as a Spirit Bear, according to a
Kitasoo First Nations story. Raven, The Creator,
made a pact with Black Bear, who agreed, after
being given assurances by Raven that he could
live in peace and safety for all time by letting one
out of every ten Black Bears turn white. This was
a reminder for Raven of the misery of the great
ice age of before. The White Bears to this day are
still called Moksgm’ol by the Kitasoo and
T’simshian people.
The picture was taken about 30 km east of
Terrace, BC, on Hwy 16 about 100-150 miles
east of Prince Rupert. This particular bear comes
through every spring. His mother was killed by a
train several years ago in this area. These bears
are mostly loners. He is eating wildflowers and
dandelions.

NORTH CASCADE AWARDED SUPERIOR MERIT AWARD
Thank you David Sams, Past President (year 2009-10) for taking the extra time and energy to
submit the extremely lengthy Merit Award application forms to WBCCI for consideration in earning
a Unit Merit Award. The WBCCI awarded our Unit the recognition and honor of being a Superior
Unit. It doesn’t get any better than that. The June 2011 Blue Beret publication identified those
units that were granted merit and superior merit awards for this past year. Our Unit has now
earned a total of two Merit Awards and two Superior Merit Awards.
Congratulations (and Thank you) to David Sams (for his leadership) and to our Members (for their
commitment and dedication) for a job well done
