Some departments now operate out of CIA’s George Gund Building on East Boulevard, while the remainder run out of McCullough. The East Boulevard building will be sold to the Cleveland Museum of Art and Case Western Reserve University. The new building, largely financed by a $10 million donation from the Gund Foundation, also will be named after George Gund. According to a CIA news release, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Atrium will be a focal point of campus activity with a glass ceiling, 48 feet high at its peak; a cafe; and the setting for exhibitions of student and faculty artwork, group meetings, and social gatherings. The Cleveland Institute of Art will name the atrium between its McCullough Center for the Visual Arts and an adjacent 80,000-square-foot addition under construction The Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Atrium. The new atrium’s name speaks to the $1 million CIA received in the form of two $500,000 grants from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation. “The Mandel Foundation supports education and the arts in order to enrich the Cleveland community and we believe that the Cleveland Institute of Art makes a major contribution to our community,” foundation chairman Morton Mandel said in a prepared statement. “Support of this magnitude is especially significant coming from this farsighted philanthropy with strong Cleveland roots,” said Grafton J. Nunes, the college’s president and CEO. Ethan, 13, of the Cincinnati suburb of Loveland, was severely injured while teaching others to play ultimate Frisbee at camp on June 29. He has been recovering in a rehabilitation unit at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and is expected to return home this month. Member FINRA Complimentary Wi-Fi in our customer lounge JTA BERLIN – Germany should publicize all suspicious art collections so possible heirs can find long-lost works, World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder said. Prompted by the recent revelation of a huge collection of artworks hidden for decades in the Munich apartment of collector Cornelius Gurlitt, Lauder in a statement issued Nov. 20 urged Germany to create a commission to examine all public collections for looted art. Lauder also said the statute of limitations on Nazi-era looting crimes should be voided. Murder is the only crime with no statute of limitations for prosecution in Germany. In the Gurlitt case, which came to light earlier this month, more than 1,400 works were confiscated nearly two years ago in the course of an investigation for tax evasion. The state prosecutor in Augsburg agreed last week to publish photos and titles of 590 works in the collection on Germany’s official website for identifying lost art. The prosecutor confirmed Nov. 19 that works proven to have been looted during the Nazi era would be returned to their original owners or heirs, while those obtained legally would remain with the collector. So far, that includes works by a relative of Gurlitt. Gurlitt has said his collection was legally obtained by his father, the Naziera collector Hildebrand Gurlitt, and has demanded its return. But prosecutors and experts have said that many of the works are of suspicious origin, though it may be too late for legal solutions. Some have suggested that appeals to Gurlitt on a moral basis may be necessary. On the statute of limitations, Lauder said it was “never intended to deal with massive wartime looting perpetrated in the course of genocide.” He added, “Anyone in Germany who possesses artworks whose provenance during the Nazi period is doubtful should therefore be required to make his holdings public.” Chagrin Blvd. . His passion for Israel became an integral part of his professional life, through his leadership of the Passport travel programs and the March of the Living, an initiative through which he traveled with teens to Poland and Israel. “Lane has been a vital part of helping shape BBYO’s Ohio Northern Region,” regional director Todd Kay said. “He has US student’s bar mitzvah dedicated to Cincy friend hit by lightning CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS / NOVEMBER 22, 2013 www.cjn.org BBYO to pay tribute to Schlessel for 30 years of service Lane A.
