Magrath 2015 Leisure Guide
Welcome to the
Magrath & District
Leisure Guide
The Magrath and District Recreation Committee welcomes you to the 2015 Magrath Leisure Guide! Its
purposes are to help Magrath area residents (and potential residents) become aware of the many leisure
activities available in the Magrath area, find out how to get involved in the community, and learn how to
access services.
This is the third annual Magrath Leisure Guide and each year the guide gets better. We are pleased, once
again, to publish in full colour and to include advertising for local businesses. We have also included photos
of area residents enjoying leisure activities in this edition. In this edition we are also happy to advertise that
local businesses are sponsoring free public swimming 12:00 – 5:50 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays from June through August and free public skating Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays, 6:30 – 7:30
p.m. throughout the arena season. We are also happy to honour Magrath champions, especially our school
teams who won Provincial Championships this past year. If the group or event you are involved with is not
represented in this guide, email [email protected] so we can update your information for our next
publication.
The leisure guide is one of two major projects of the Magrath and District Recreation Committee aimed to
make leisure activities in the Magrath area more accessible to residents. We also sponsor Mass Registration Nights held semi-annually in March and September. The Mass Registration Nights provide opportunities for community groups to promote their organizations and to register participants. For residents, the
Mass Registration Night provides the chance to “shop” the options and register for all their activities in
one place. The next Mass Registration Night is scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, 5 - 8 PM at
the Magrath Elementary School Cafeteria Gym.
In creating this guide, we have been overwhelmed to see just how many people volunteer their time to
make our community better. We applaud your service. It is the people who make Magrath great!
Sincerely,
The Leisure Guide Committee
Brenda Beck, Becky Doig, Trevor Millward, and Wayne Quinton.

Providing adult education and adult &
family literacy opportunities to all
communities in Cardston County.
Programming priority is given to the
following areas:
Literacy & Foundational Learning
Literacy, proficiency in the English language, and the ability to engage with
basic technology so that adults are
able to participate actively in society,
pursue further learning, and be successful in their work.
Community Capacity Building
This programming area includes learning opportunities that seek to increase
awareness of and address community
problems, as well as learning opportunities that prepare individuals to access
employment and be successful in the
workplace.
Ideas for programming and instructors
in the Magrath area are always
welcome. There are board positions
open and volunteers needed.

PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Friends of the Library have worked
hard for many years to promote the
library and to fundraise, including applying for grants, on the library’s behalf.
However, the organization is currently
in need of new board members. If
you are interested in this opportunity
to provide an important service in the
community, please contact Devar Dahl

The Friends is the fundraising arm of
the MHMA. Our main fundraiser is the
Down Home Dinner which takes place
on the first Friday in June. In 2015 it is
on June 5. It is a delicious full course
roast beef dinner that is served at the
Covered Wagon RV Park or as a takeout meal obtained from the Magrath
Seniors Centre. We are fundraising for
the Barn structure that is planned for
the lot just north of the museum that
will house exhibits on the agricultural
businesses that helped build Magrath:
irrigation, grain, cattle, and sheep/

“Hidden Gem of the South”
The Magrath Golf Club is celebrating its 90th Anniversary this year.
Established in 1925, the Magrath Golf Club is one of the oldest golf
courses in Alberta, and its long standing reputation is well deserved.
Pristinely manicured fairways, lush landscaping and beautiful vistas are
the visual enticements that draw players to the course, but its challenging natural layout, quick greens, and risk vs. reward design keep them
coming back time and time again. The Club boasts a fantastic practice
facility and a spacious clubhouse with an outstanding menu – things
that players of all skill levels tend to appreciate. The Club is fully open
to the public and always encourages and appreciates new visitors.

to go to at least one away tournament
for each division. The division levels are

The Magrath Cultural Arts Society was
formed in 1999 during the Magrath
Centennial. Our mission is to keep cultural arts alive and well in Magrath, and
every year since our beginning we have
produced plays and organized other
cultural events. In the past we have organized dinner theatres, planned programs for Magrath Days, and worked in
partnership with the school to provide
dramatic experiences for our youth.
Our organization is run entirely with
volunteers and we are always looking
for new people who share an interest
in the cultural arts.

Season: September - May
Clogging is offered to ages 4+ at every
level. As a clogging group we try to
offer a type of dance for kids of all
ages. Kids get the opportunity to learn
many different styles of clogging and
perform at many functions throughout
the year. Our goal is to help kids learn
specific dances and then be able to
master the steps and perform them in
front of other people. We believe that
this helps kids develop better selfesteem, determination and motivation
to be the best they can be. We also try
to have an environment where kids
feel safe and can have fun while they
dance, learn, and socialize with other
kids in the program.
