Telephone: 616-696-3335, The Cedar Springs Library A library association was formed in Cedar Springs as early as 1875, and the interest is still strong today. A vibrant and busy community hot spot, the Cedar Springs Library, located at 43 W. Cherry Street, serves patrons from Cedar Springs and all over northern Kent County.Taxpayers in both Cedar Springs and Solon Township support the library. As part of the Lakeland Library Cooperative, it has a borrowing capacity that far exceeds the number of books on the shelves. They also have 6 public access computers available during regular business hours. The library has outgrown its facilities, and is currently in the midst of a fundraising campaign to build a new library on the northwest corner of Main and Maple Streets, which should be built within the next 3-5 years. Each year the CSPL runs a joint campaign with the Sand Lake/Nelson Library to get all first graders in Cedar Springs Public Schools a library card, and each summer they hold a huge summer reading program, with hundreds of area children and adults attending. They also have a children’s preschool story time weekly, monthly book discussions, author visits, and other events throughout the year. Hours are Mon.-Tues. & Fri. noon-6 p.m., Wed. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sat. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Closed Thursday and Sunday. Call (616) 696-1910 for more info. The Sand Lake/Nelson Township Library The Sand Lake library began providing library services to the community as part of the Women’s Club in the 1920s. The library has moved several times, and in May 2007 it moved into a brand new facility at 88 Eighth Street in Sand Lake. Built in a rustic style symbolic of the rural community, the new library is 8,350 square feet with at least 5,000 square feet for library materials alone. This library is reminiscent of a beautiful old red barn with a clerestory and an impressive stone fireplace. The library features a community meeting room, child early literacy area, a special teen area, study rooms, reading area with fireplace and chairs, and two rows of public access computers. Part of the Kent District Library system and the Lakeland Cooperative, the Sand Lake/Nelson Library can get most any book you are looking for. They hold a summer reading program for children each year, along with special events throughout the rest of the year, book discussions, and more. Each summer the library holds a children’s summer reading program, and various special programs throughout the year. Local Culture The Cedar Springs Historical Museum is located in Morley Park just off south Main and Cedar Street. Visit the museum and step back in time as you tour the one-room Payne School that was moved to the park in 1971. The school has been renovated to reflect the century long era in public education when one teacher, lodging with a school family, taught all eight grades. In the museum itself, you step into the history of Cedar Springs and its surrounding area. Established as a lumber town in 1856, Cedar Springs boasted numerous lumber and shingle mills. The museum’s displays reflect this lumbering and farming heritage. On the front lawn is a stump puller that was used to clear the stumps so that the land could be farmed. In addition to the many displays, the museum offers the following services: • Genealogy assistance • Census information for research • Microfilm access Area libraries offer a gateway to learning www.cedarspringspost.com When you drive into Cedar Springs for the first time, you can’t help but notice the small town charm. Antique lampposts line Main Street; little shops and cafes show the city’s character. And look, an oldfashioned movie theatre! There’s no denying that movie theatres, especially old ones like The Kent Theatre, captivate people. What sets the Kent apar t from most old-time theatres is that the story behind it keeps on captivating people, as the struggle to keep the Kent unfolds. The theatre was built as the Hubbard Opera House in 1880, and over the years was used for all types of enter tainment and gatherings, including dances, chicken suppers, school graduations, fiddle contests, political rallies, plays, vaudeville productions, movies (both silent and talkie), and talent shows. It passed through several owners, and closed as a theater in 1975. It was used as a print shop for several years after. The current Cedar Springs Theatre Association bought it in 1998, and volunteers have worked non-stop, despite financial difficulty, to fundraise and make improvements to this historic landmark in the hear t of Cedar Springs. In order to afford the renovations, the theatre association raises money project by project, with fundraisers, and grants from foundations and businesses. The Kent Theatre is used for both movies and live performances—plays, concer ts, jam sessions, pageants and poetry readings. Visit http://www.kenttheatre.com/ for information on upcoming events. I took His hand when I heard him call I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way I found that peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss Oh yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. You won’t find more news and feature stories from this area in any newspaper other than The Post. The newspaper is available on newsstands and in businesses around the northern Kent County area each Thursday, free of charge. Subscriptions are also available if you’d like the Cedar Springs Post mailed to you each week.“In my opinion, there’s nothing more American—or as impacting to a community—than the local newspaper,” said Post Publisher, Lois Allen. “The Post is exclusive to this community. It has its own personality and it reflects the personality of this community.” Located on 36 E. Maple Street, The Cedar Springs Post serves over 5000 families in northern Kent County—including Cedar Springs, Sand Lake, Pierson, Gowen, Trufant and over 20 Lake Communities. It is kept alive by the support given by the local businesses that advertise in it, and the loyal staff who work hard to bring their readers the best newspaper possible. Who says the best things in life aren’t free?
