HISTORYOFHALLOFFAME
InMarch2006underthedirectionofGeorgeKleeman,theBoardofAthleticsapprovedacommitteeto
developcriteriaforaHallofFamefortheathletes,coaches,volunteersandofficialswhohavesupported
andcontributedtotheachievementsofthePacificAssociationofUSATrack&Fieldsinceitsinceptionin
1980.Duringthose25years,theassociationhadgrowntobecomethelargestintheUnitedStateswith
innovativeanduniqueprogramsinallofthesportsdisciplines.Thishasbeendonebytheconcertedeffort
ofourdedicatedofficestaffandthemanyvolunteerswhoworkforthesportofathleticsinNorthern
CaliforniaandNorthernNevada.Consequently,theBoardnowfeltthatitwastimetorecognizethese
lifetimecontributionsofthemembersandathletesduringthatperiod.Theseincludethedisciplinesof
track&field,roadracing,racewalking,crosscountry,ultrarunning,mountainrunningandathleticsforthe
disabled.Althoughthereareanumberofindividualcommitteeandboardawardsalreadyinplaceto
recognizethecontributionofcurrentendeavorsandevenafewforlifetimeservice,thePacificAssociation
HallofFameallowsthemembershiptorecognizeandimmortalizecontributionstoourlocalathleticssport
scene,whichareexceptionalaswellassustaining.

Havecompiledanextraordinarywinningrecordorhaveachievedotheroutstanding
accomplishments;and
c.
Havecoachedforatleasttwenty(20)years.
Tobenominated,acoachmusthavebeenretiredforatleastoneyearfromactivefull-timecoaching,
exceptwheres/hehascoachedforthirty-five(35)yearsormore.

RuthAndersonwasanultra-pioneerinthemid1970’sinher40’s,longbeforeitwasfashionable,
particularlyforwomen.Perhapsitwasthethrilloftheoverallwomen’swininherfirstultra,theUSATFs
PacificAssociations50kmalongSacramento’sGardenHighwayin1976,thathaskeptthismasters
ultrarunningpioneerrunningultrasfor25years.SheestablishednumerousAmericanultradistance
women'srecords,andindoingsobecameaninspirationforthefirstgenerationofAmericanultrawomen.
Sheledtheworldultrarankingswellintothe1980s.Butitwasthecombinationofherultrarunning
accomplishmentsandhertirelessdedicationtothedevelopmentandrecognitionofthesportthatinspired
USATrack&Fieldtoestablishandnametheannualwomen’sultrarunneroftheyearawardafterherin
1995.Ruthmayhavebeenthefirstwomentocompletea100krace.Sheevenhasacombined50km/50

winona50kmtrailcoursealongtheSkylineNationalTrailintheEastBayHillsaboveherhomeinOakland,
CA.SheisencouragedtocompeteinchampionshipracesbythemedalsawardedtoMastersrunnersin5yearagegroups."TobeaNationalChampionisparticularlyrewardingforusintheolderagegroups,and
showthepossibilitiestoachieverecognitionintoour70s,80s,andeven90s,"saysthealways-motivated
Anderson.
WhatsetRuthapartfromherfellowathleteswasherwillingnesstoengagewithTAC/USATFandtoassume
responsibilitiesonitsbehalf(including,aTeamUSAleader).Bycontrast,thetopwomenofthatearly
ultrarunningera(1980'sintotheearly'90's)generallydidnottakeanyactivepartadministratively.She
wasalsoactiveontheLDRsideduringthe1980’sbeforetheseparateUltracouncilwasformedintheearly
90’s.
Shebecameactiveinthenationalfederation'sfledglingdistancerunningcommittees.In1986,shewasa
foundingmemberofthefirstUltrarunningSubcommitteeofUSATrack&Field.Andersoncontinueduntil
theearly2000asaUSATFcommitteememberandvolunteerforlongdistancerunningingeneraland
ultrarunninginparticular.Forherpioneeringaccomplishmentsinthesportandherperformances,
AndersonwastheinductedintotheUSATFMastersHallofFameintheinitialclassin1996andisoneof
onlyfourultrarunnersinthehall.
Shewasalsoconsistentlyamosthelpfulco-subcommitteememberandadvisor/consultanttothePA
Ultra/MUTSubcommitteechairthroughthesameperiod.Shewasalsobeeninvolvedin

useinelitesport.HecoachedtheMillbraeLionsfrom1962to1974thenCalStateUniversityatHayward
from1974to1992andsincethenatSanFranciscoState.Hewasnamedto10NationalTeamCoaching
positionsbetweenthePanAmGamesinWinnipegin1967tothe1986GoodwillGamesinMoscow.He
coachedontwoOlympicteamsandtwoPanAmTeamsinthatperiod.Histopassignmentsmighthave
beenthe1975TourofthePeople’sRepublicofChina*oneofthefirstgoodwilltourstoChinaandthe1976
USOlympicTeamwherehewasthefieldeventscoach.In1981,hecoachedincompetitionbetween
AmericanandSovietathletesayearaftertheUnitedStatesboycottedtheMoscowOlympicstoprotestthe
SovietinvasionofAfghanistan.HehasbeenoneoftheNationalTeamPhysiciansfourtimesatthe1982
PanAmGamesinVenezuela,the1985WorldCupinCanberra,Australia,the1987Worldchampionshipin
Romeandthe1991WorldchampionshipsinTokyo.
WithinthePacificAssociationHarmonhasbeenactivesince1965asaleaderinmanyareas.Duringthe
AAUdayshewasAssociationTrack&FieldChairandNationalGirlsAgeGroupChair(1963-1967).Hewas
thefirstAthleticsCongressPresident1981-82whenitsplitawayfromtheAAU.
BrownservedTAC/USATFaschairoftheorganization’sSportsScienceandMedicalCommitteefortwo
decadeswherehewasinstrumentalindevelopingUSATF’sinnovativedrugtestinginitiatives.Thepastfew
yearsheservedasUSATF’sHighPerformanceSportsScienceChair.Brownwasalsooneoftheco-architects
ofUSATF’sHighPerformanceProgramsphilosophyoftrackandfieldbeinganathlete-centered,coachdrivenandscientificallyappliedsport.
Intheearly1980s,hehelpedtoinitiateandthenchairtheIAAFMedicalEducationWorkingGroup,a
forerunnertothecurrentMedicalandAnti-DopingCommission,whichstartedin1985onwhichhealso
serveduntilsteppingdownin2007.Inall,Brown’scontributiontotheIAAF’smedicalandanti-doping
programconsistedof24yearsofdevotedservice,aperiodthatalsoinvolvedmanyappointmentsas
MedicalDelegatetoIAAFchampionships.InternationallyAssuchhehasbeeninvolvedwithmedicalcare
anddrugtestingatmanyregionalandinternationalchampionships.HewastheheadoftheMedicalteam

firstincorporatedscienceintotrainingforathletes.Hehasbeenaleaderinthatfield.
HebecameinvolvedintheeducationalactivitiesoftheIAAFparticularlythemedicalareagiveinmany
workshopsaroundtheworldinthemid90’sincludingQatar,in92,Monacoin94,Nairobi,Guttenbergand

Then21yearsafterhissecondretirement,hereturnedtocompetitioninthe65yearolddivisionand

inMay1991havingsufferedaheartattackwhileattendingaGiants-MontrealBaseballgameatCandlestick
Parkhisotherpassion.Howasprobablyoneofthemostavidbaseballfansintheusesincehewenttoa
ballgamealmosteverydaywitheratCandlestickortheOaklandColiseum.Hehadseasonticketstoboth.
NomatterwhereHotravelledonhisoffdaysparticularlyattrackmeetsyouwouldfindHoraceatthelocal
baseballpark.Buttrackwashistruelove.Acontemporaryofhis,GeorgeNewlonfeltthatHowas
excessiveinhisdedicationandcommitmenttothetrackandfieldcommunity.Howasalwaysthere,in
Modesto,inSanJose,InSacramento,atStanford,atBerkeley,atallcomersmeets,agegroupmeets,fancy
invitational,nationalchampionshipsortheOlympicGames.Howasmorethanagoodpolevaultofficial.
Hehelpedimproveboththelocalandnationaltrackandfieldprograms.Hewasasquicktoofferaclinicto
officialsashewastochairacommitteeinordertohelptheorganizationalstructure.HechairedtheTAC
NationalMembershipcommitteefromtheinceptionin1980.In1978HoracewaschairforTrackandField
undertheAAUumbrellaandthenlaterservedfouryearsasourthirdPresident.Horacewasalwayswilling
togoanywhereatanytimeandhisoutstandingrapportwithalllevelshelpedtogetthingsaccomplish.Ho
inconjunctionwithGeorgeKleemangotthePacificAssociationincorporatedasanonprofitorganizationin
thelate80’s.Howassomewhatofahistorybuffandalwayswenttolocalattractionswhenhewasnot
workingatthemeet.Horacewastrulyaoneofakindandadedicatedtothecauseshefeltcloseto.He
wasconstantlyonthegoduringtheoutdoorseasonansweringrequestsforhisservices.And,henever
askedforadimeinreturnthatanyofuseverheardof.Theexperienceofthisquitemanwassuchthathe
headedupthepolevaultofficialsatthe1984OlympicGames.

"Mybrotherwasthemostlaidbackperson,"Leroysaid."Ifsomethingwentwrong,he'djustsay,'We'llget
by.'Hewasnevernegative,neversaidabadwordaboutanybody."
BeforeRickMilamsufferedaheartattackbehindthewheelonthatfatefulday,hehadfoughtStage4colon
cancerandwaswinningthebattlewhilemaintaininganexhaustiveschedulethoughouttheCentralCoast
SectionoftheCIF.Milammaintainedapositiveattitudethroughout.Whenotherswereupsettolearnof
hisbattlehisresponsewas.”Thisisnothing,IwasaMarine.”

andfieldteamandCoachBudWinter,recognizedasoneofthegreatestsprintscoachesintheworld.
MilamjoinedtheU.S.MarineCorps,wherehestayedfortwoyears.WhenMilamlandedajobcoaching
track&fieldandcross-countryatHomestead,heincorporatedstringenttraininghelearnedintheMarine
Corpsintohispractices.

Milamwasdisenchantedwiththelayoffsofteachersbackthen,sohewentintotheinsurancebusiness,
workingontaxsheltersforsportsfigures.Milamkepthishand,aswellashisvastknowledge,inhelpingto
runtrackandfieldmeetsfor44years.Wherevertherewasatrackmeetoracross-countrymeet,Milam
wasusuallythere.Afewyearsago,hewasoneoftheannouncersattheArtichokeInvitational.
HehelpedwiththeannouncingatCCSmeets,aswellasinvitationalmeets.Withhisdeepvoice,hewould
notonlycalltheraces,butalsomakeannouncements.

andearnedhimthenickname“MultipleMac”.WhileatOregonhecompetedinallfouroutdoorweight
throwingevents.ForexamplehebeganhiscollegiatecareerasajavelinthrowerfortheOregontrackteam,
placingthirdinshotputinthe1973NCAAChampionshiphissenioryearandwonthe1977AAUIndoor
shotputchampionship.Healsothrewthehammer,butallhisbigtitlescamewiththediscus.
MacWilkins'athleticcareerspanned23years,fourOlympicteamsandfourworldrecordsinthediscus.He
setthreeofthoserecordsonasingleday.MacwasrecruitedtotheUniversityofOregonbythefamous
distancerunningcoachBillBowerman(outofBeavertonHighSchool)asajavelinthrowerwherehethrew
theapersonalbestinthejavelinof78.44m(257'4")asa19-year-oldfreshman.AsaseniorhewasNCAA
ChampioninthediscusandthirdintheshotandwonthefirstofeightUSNationalChampionshipsinthe
discus.
A1973graduateoftheUniversityofOregon,Wilkinsalsohadlifetimebestsof69'11/4"(21.06m)inthe
shotputtowintheastheAAUIndoorChampionin1977,and208'10"(63.66m)inthehammerthrowthat
sameyear.Duringhiscareerhewasnationallyrankedinthreethrowingeventsbutitwasinthediscus
whereheachievedhisgreatestglory.HetooktheAAUdiscustitlesixtimes.
ButMac’sgreatestyearhadtobe1976.Wilkinsbrokethediscusworldrecordfourtimesinlessthan30
days.Aftersettinghisfirstworldrecordof226-11½(69.18)onApril4th,hewenttoSanJoséonMay1and,
oneachofhisfirstthreethrowsinthecompetitionprogressivelyimprovedthatrecord.Hisopeningthrow
was69.80m(229’0”),nextcamea70.24m(230’51/2”),whichwasthefirstever70mthrowandfinally
came70.86m(232’6”).FollowingthatperformancehewentontowinthegoldmedalattheOlympicsat
MontrealinJulyasamemberofhisfirstOlympicTeamaftersettinganOlympicrecordof224'0"inthe
preliminaries.HisothergoldmedaloccurredatthePanAmericanGamesin1979.
Hewastop-rankedintheworldin1976and1980inthediscusandwasthetop-rankedU.S.discusthrower
eighttimes,includingsixinarowfrom1976through1981.HisP.R.occurredonJuly9,1980atHelsinki
withathrowof70.98m(232’10”)whichatthetiewasthesecondfarthestthrowever.

OR.Histhrowerswon24individualNationalChampionshipsandearned94All-Americanhonors.InAugust
