Most of you will know Sandra Lavender
as a finalist on the first series of the Great
British Sewing Bee. Sandra was born
and bred in the Midlands and spent her
childhood sitting watching her mom
and grandmother making clothes and
household items. She first started sewing
at the age of 13, making skirts, dresses
and tops for herself. Since then she has
used her sewing skills to make clothes for
herself and her 3 daughters and created
beautiful soft furnishings for her home.

Sandra loves that she can make items that are unique, practical
and well made, on a budget. Share a day with Sandra, her enthusiasm and knowledge for all things sewing is inspiring.
This course will teach you how to make a classic ‘A line’ skirt.
The pattern used is so versatile; it really can be a skirt for all
occasions. A tweed fabric will make it perfect for the winter.
Try soft, cool, pretty cotton for the summer or a beautiful fabric
for an elegant evening skirt.
The course will involve:
• Arranging the pattern pieces on the fabric
• An explanation of pattern markings
• Using Interfacing
• Inserting a zip
• How to create the perfect dart without dimples
• Using different types of stitches

After winning the made to measure challenge with her
yoga wear, Tamara would love to encourage home
sewers to invest in an overlocker. Most people cringe
at the thought of using an overlocker, Tamara wants to
demystify the world of overlockers and show students
how to make their own custom fit leisure wear. She says
“with practice students will be able to make leggings
and a vest in 1hr!” Spend the day with Tamara, you will
not only learn some new skills but also learn how to let
your imagination flow.
A kit will be supplied with everything you need
Tamara describes herself as being
totally addicted to being creative
and often has 4 or 5 projects on
the go at once. She says “life is
never dull!” and balances sewing,
teaching yoga and being a mum
of two.
It is a love of bright unusual fabrics
which inspires what Tamara
makes. When she sees a fabric
she loves, she’ll buy 2 metres of it
without a clue what it will be used
for! Often seen in her local charity
shops, she says “it’s all about using
your imagination. You may see a
pair of curtains, I see a pleated
skirt and shift top!”

Winner of The Great British Sewing Bee in 2014, Heather now
has the pleasure of passing on some of the skills she has
learnt over the years.
Born in 1956, Heather was fortunate to have had tremendous
tuition at school in sewing before the subject was removed
from the curriculum in its pure form. She has continued
throughout her adult life to make most of her own clothes
and soft furnishings. Heather loves the more challenging
side of sewing, with couture techniques holding a particular
fascination for her.
Heather loves to sew with luxurious fabrics and wants to
share with you her experience to help you gain confidence
in sewing with silk. Often you can find silk is more reasonably
priced than you imagine. Learning how to handle these
speciality fabrics will expand your wardrobe options and help
you to create designer style garments at a fraction of the cost
of buying them readymade. Spend the day with Heather and
enjoy a ‘hands on’ experience in a supportive environment.

Several years ago, frustrated by collaging in paper and
desperate to work with cloth, Dionne dashed out and bought a
Janome FM725 Embellisher “it allows me to bring fabric textures,
marks and surfaces together, without glues hence retaining the
‘handle’ of the cloth... I’ve never looked back!”
On this jam packed day you will explore a variety of joining/
collaging techniques using an embellisher and a sewing
machine: you’ll play with layout, scale and image in considering
a series of design implications in the development of your work.
You can expect to encounter a series of techniques which will
be transferable to many other projects and you’ll leave with
1 (maybe 2) tactile collages/abstract pictures.
