The A
O celebrate its amazing variety
of shops and cafes, Bristol Shopping Quarter has launched a
fantastic free guide to its independent retailers. Made up of
four key areas, Broadmead, The Galleries, Quakers Friars and Cabot Circus, this huge shopping area has
something for everyone.
As well as high street favourites and
signature stores Harvey Nichols and
House of Fraser, the area is home to
more than 90 independent retailers, ranging from friendly cafes and gift shops to
boutiques, jewellery shops, couture
dressmakers, and tailors.
The free guide, first published in 2014
and now fully updated, features a striking map designed by Co-LAB in Merchant Street and an A-Z, colour-coded
listing.
The map has been described as a work
of art in itself. Here’s a few of our favourite independent stores...
handmade jewellery, wooden jewellery
boxes, enamel mugs and glasses.

BRISTOLPOST
With Sara Wallis
Time of transition
best of the rest
pick of the DAY
boy meets girl, BBC2, 10pm
W
HEN this rom com about a
man falling for a transgender woman first arrived, we
were all shock and awe.
What a thoroughly modern
love story, and hip hip hurray to the
BBC, we thought, as we applauded
trans actress Rebecca Root for her lead
role.
Now of course, as Judy (Root) and
Leo (Harry Hepple) return for a second
series, the shock factor has gone. Now
that we have stopped gasping: “Look,
it’s a woman who used to be a man,
playing a woman who used to be a
man, going out with a man,” and so on,
we can simply enjoy this sweet comedy
drama without any fuss.
The plot hardly rattles along, in fact it
pootles, ambles, with perhaps the odd
skip. But that’s fine. Not everything we
watch should require an emergency
manicure the next day.
As we rejoin Judy and Leo, they are in
love, totally committed and making
plans for a future together. But, plot
twist alert... Leo has been offered a new
job.
Good salary, pension, five weeks’
holiday. Perfect? No, it’s in London, a
fair few miles from their Newcastle
home. Well we needed some kind of
spanner in the works to keep us
interested.
“It will be ok, we’ll see each other
every weekend,” says Leo. Oh right,
because that always goes without a
hitch in sitcoms.
Meanwhile, Harry’s mum Pam
(Denise Welch) decides to join Judy’s
mum Peggy (Janine Duvitski)
at a transgender support
group, but is horrified when
someone asks how long she’s
been living as a woman. “It’s
the butch haircut and the way
you walk,” explains Peggy,
helpful as ever.
And elsewhere, Anji is
alarmed to discover the salon
has rats. But there’s a silver
lining for Jackie, who takes a
shine to the pest controller.

George Blagden as Louis XIV
versailles bbc2, 9pm
Renovating your house is always full of
excitement. Knock down a wall or two, a
lick of paint, maybe a couple of new
cushions. And King Louis, deep in the
throes of doing up his palace, is beside
himself.
“He loves the tour,” says his grumpy
brother Philippe, rolling his eyes. And
indeed, Louis is in his element, swishing
around like he’s Laurence Llewelyn
Bowen.
“Here’s the East Wing,” Louis gushes to
a crowd of new guests. “You should see
Versailles not as the royal palace, but as
your home, a place of leisure and
conversation, of joy and light...”
But, hang on. He’s interrupted by an
angry builder screaming abuse at him
from the scaffolding. This just won’t do.

This hilarious satire has proved that
Brexit does have a funny side as writers
Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkins lampoon
both sides of the EU referendum.
And as well as Brexit banter, we’ve also
had a joyous trip into the imagined world
of Donald Trump and inside Vladimir
Putin’s Presidential office.
In this closing episode (mostly written
hours before transmission), the Unity
Unit has resorted to violence, while Oleg

and Bea (Ayda Field) has resorted to
tyranny.
Meanwhile, Gerry (Andy Nyman), who
has been heading up the Brexit bus with

More tense stories of life and loss from
London’s St George’s Hospital.
This time cyclist Athar, 22, is rushed in
after he ‘bullseyed’ the rear window of a
car. He wasn’t wearing a helmet and
needs to be checked for head and neck
injuries.
Meanwhile, Peter, 91, who cares for his
wife Marlene, needs X-rays after taking a
tumble at home. Could there be underlying health issues? And elsewhere, Emma,
26, cut her head open during an epileptic
seizure.
