From the time it opened its doors in 1925, the Alex Theatre has stood proudly as the cultural epicenter of the City of Glendale. Over the years, the two have developed a distinct bond. They’ve grown up together, continuously seeking out innovation and progress, committed to maintaining their respective heritage. Through changing times, the Alex has transcended its beginnings as a mere vaudeville house and has stood proudly as a symbol for the city. This anniversary is meaningful because it shows the power of a community that has embraced such a treasured icon and remained dedicated to playing an active role in its ongoing success. By the same token, Glendale Arts has always strived to contribute to this phenomenal community by ensuring that the Alex remains more than just a beloved landmark, but a destination for all to experience the arts and live entertainment. Celebrating 90 years of the Alex Theatre throughout the 2015-16 season represents our collective commitment to Preserving the Past and Presenting the Future. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you at the Alex! Coinciding with the start of the Alex90 season was The ILLUMINATE Project, which aimed to fully restore the Theatre’s 100-foot-tall Art Deco neon tower and spire so it can once again stand as the shining light of the Glendale skyline. To us, Alex90 and campaigns like The ILLUMINATE Project offer everyone an opportunity to celebrate this historic milestone and make a significant contribution to maintaining and preserving the Alex’s legacy for generations to come. The “Alexander” was named after the young son of C.L. Langley, who developed the Theatre project. The 100-foot neon-lit Art Deco marquee and tower were added in 1940. They were designed by renowned theatre architect S. Charles Lee. At the time the marquee and tower were added, the Theatre’s name was officially shortened to “Alex.” In 1934, the Alexander presented daily matinees and double features for every program. Ticket prices were 30 and 40 cents. Following a distinguished role in Vaudeville history, the Alex became a leading preview and first-run movie house when live stage performances waned in the 1930s. Elizabeth Taylor, Bing Crosby, Charlie Chaplin, Ginger Rogers, Barbara Stanwyk, and Robert Taylor were among the Hollywood stars who slipped into the auditorium to see their new releases. The City of Glendale designated the Alex Theatre as a local landmark in 1977. A New Center For Arts & Entertainment: 1991–2010 For 60 years the Alex hosted first-run blockbusters such as Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Hunt for Red October. The Alex ended regular operations on September 26, 1991 with Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In the spring of 1992, the Glendale Redevelopment Agency purchased the Alex and restoration began in December of 1992. On New Year’s Eve in 1993, the Theatre reopened as a performing arts and entertainment center. In 1995, the Glendale Redevelopment Agency leased the Theatre to the Alex Regional Theatre (ART) Board, a non-profit corporation which oversaw programming, rentals, fundraising, and management of the Theatre. In 2008, the ART Board became Glendale Arts, a private non-profit organization charged with managing the Alex as well as developing community resources and programming that benefit the community. The Alex Today: 2010–Present The Alex Theatre hosts roughly 200 events per year Garbage, Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, Billy Elliott The Musical, Arturo Sandoval, and Musical Theatre Guild, to name a few. and attracts more than 100,000 patrons to the region.
