Fall 2015 - Lake County Haven
RISING TO THE CHALLENGE:
When the Going Gets Tough, the Haven Gets Going!
It’s no secret that money is tight –
for federal, state, and local
governments, for businesses large
and small, and for individuals just
trying to make a life for their
families. Over the past 6 years, the
economy has been on a virtual roller
coaster, never quite seeming to
make it back to the top, let alone
getting off the ride all together.
Illinois has had a particularly
troubled few years, with consistently
devastating unemployment rates
and a budget deficit in the billions.

The answer seems simple: don’t
spend more money than you have.
Either increase your income to meet
your expenses, or decrease your
expenses to match your income. But
few things in life are as easy as they
sound, and Illinois leadership
certainly has their work cut out for
them. Inevitably, a lot of tough
decisions are going to be made. In
fact, Governor Rauner’s current
budget proposes cutting mental
health care in Illinois by $82 million
in 2016. What will this mean to us in
the “real world”?
At the Haven, we are doing
everything we can to stop that from
happening. Instead, we aim to close
the gap, to make up for dwindling
mental health and addiction
services. On July 1, we implemented
a new Day Program at our shelter to
provide our residents with the highquality services that they need to
truly learn to manage their mental
health and remain clean and sober.

FEWER psychiatrists to provide
services to low-income and
under-insured citizens


SHORTER treatment time for
those struggling with addiction
disorders
FEWER counseling sessions
available to those experiencing
mental illness
LESS access to affordable
psychiatric medications
Without these services, the millions
who use them will spend more time
on the streets as their mental health
needs go untreated.

The Lake County Haven empowers homeless women and their children
to achieve permanent, independent living.
The Lake County Haven provides
food, safety, shelter, counseling, and
life-skills training to women and
children who are trying to find a path
out of homelessness. Each and every
day, our residents work to rebuild
their lives. For many, it is a constant,
uphill struggle. Here is...
One Woman’s Journey.
LYNN
A Bump in the Road
Lynn grew up on the North Shore of
Chicago. She had a great family, lived
in a beautiful neighborhood, and
went to excellent schools. When she
grew up, she went to college and
eventually married a doctor. “We
moved to Florida and I played tennis
and lunched every day. I lived in a big
house and drove an expensive car.
I thought I was living the
American Dream.”
But life wasn’t perfect, and when she
and her husband divorced, Lynn lost
custody of her 7-year old son. “I felt
lost and was broken physically,
spiritually, and emotionally.” Lynn
used alcohol to help her cope with her
feelings of loss and hopelessness. She
even spent time in jail after getting a
DUI. “How could I go from being a

doctor’s wife to an inmate with a
number? After all, I am educated and
smart. This stuff doesn’t happen to
people in my world.” But prison
didn’t fix her problems – when she
got out, she started drinking again as
if she had never stopped. “My last
relapse left me homeless. I spent
many nights on people’s couches and
was suicidal and saw no way out.”
Stopping for Directions
Eventually, a friend recommended
Lynn to a treatment center. From
there, she was referred to the Lake
County Haven. “I cried daily at first.
They held my hand and helped me on
this journey. I have been here for a
while now and it has changed my life.
I am attending their Day Program
and am learning things about myself
that I never knew. I am learning how
to write a resume, read a credit
report, and learning tools that are
building my self-esteem. I love what
they are doing for me. I am filled with
gratitude each and every day.”
The Road Ahead
Lynn continues to work alongside the
Haven on her journey to
independence. “With the Haven’s
help, I now have new hope that I
never had. My son is 26 today, and
with all the new life-skills I am
learning from the Day Program, I am
confident someday my son will come
seeking me out. And I will have my
own door for him to knock on, and
I will be sober. Thank you Lake
County Haven.”

2015 Gala Benefit
On Saturday, May 2, the Lake County Haven Women’s
Auxiliary hosted its 2015 gala at Cuneo Mansion and
Gardens in Vernon Hills. The evening was an enormous
success, with 230 attendees and outstanding community
support and fundraising participation.
Members of Lake County Haven Women’s Auxiliary
worked tirelessly to make this night special for all
attendees. Cuneo Mansion was transformed into an
exotic, Moroccan-style retreat, complete with colorful
lanterns, giant camels, and belly dancers. Guests enjoyed
excellent food, unique live and silent auction items, and
great music from Chef Dan and the Appetizers. It was an
evening we won’t soon forget!
Thank you to every member of the Women’s Auxiliary for
your vision and execution of this incredible event – you
ladies outdid yourselves again!
The Haven would like to extend our deepest thanks to our
incredible 2015 gala leadership team!

Haven Happenings
We would like to send a special thank you to an
incredible volunteer, Susan Bodett, who has
been sharing her time with us nearly every
week for almost two years! Susan helps the
Haven wherever needed--from office tasks to
property repair projects, she has been there for
us every step of the way. Thank you, Susan!
Thank you to our friends with the Lake Zurich
High School PE Leadership Team for
sponsoring a night at our shelter and for taking
the time to come see what we are all about!
Making our shelter into a home would be impossible if not for
the efforts of our many volunteers and in-kind donors.
Thank you for all you do!
Lake County Cares “Heart2Heart” program
provided our residents with cheerful Valentine’s
Day packages! Thank you to all who
participated in making Valentine’s Day so
special at the Haven.
The Mattress Firm generously donated new
memory foam pillows for the Haven’s shelter
and Stage II program. Our residents are loving
being comfortable and cozy each night.
Thank you!
The outstanding women of Community Purse
elected to donate $14,000 to the Lake County
Haven at their inaugural meeting in February.
Thank you to these incredible women who have
made a world of difference for the residents of
our program!
The Haven is thankful for the gracious
supporters who are participating in our Meal
Donation Program. These volunteers prepare
dinner for our residents and supply them with
nutritious, delicious meals. Thank you for your
gift of nourishment!

Home is Where the Heart Is
The Haven strives to create a nurturing, home-like
environment for the women and children in our
programs. When walking through our home on any given
day, you can hear the laughter of children, smell the
comforting aroma of a home-cooked meal, and see the
smiling, supportive faces of our residents and staff. Here
are a few sights and sounds from around our home…
Forgotten.
Unwanted.
Outcast.
Invisible.
“[The Haven] has the feel of home…and peace.”
This is how
it feels to be
homeless.
These are just a few of the thoughtful words that our
community members have shared with Haven residents.
“We are all so proud of you and the steps you are taking
to have a happy and successful life and family. People at
the Haven are there to support you on your journey.
You are never alone. Take care."
A few moments of your time will give countless moments
of hope & encouragement to someone who has none.
Please visit our web site & submit your Kind Words &
share with your friends & family members. You’ll find
info there to share by mail or email, as well. Thank you!
“You really want to see us make it, and I’ll never forget
that you gave me and mine a chance. Thank you for
believing there was quality still in me.”
