A weatherproven concept
The Drammen Yard Carousels have been in service for many years.
The first of its kind was delivered from the yard by the turn of
the millenium. An ever increasing demand has lead to series of
carousels of different shapes and sizes, all based on the original
concept.
Interruptions in offshore cable
laying are most commonly caused
by damages to vital parts resulting
from the extreme dynamic forces
encountered at sea.
The foundation, drive units, carousel and basket may
be configured in different ways according to your
requirements. These various combinations come with complete certification from DNV.
Through this use of standardized components, delivery and installation time is brought

Two complete carousel packages were loaded,
secured and commissioned into the hold
of transport vessel in two days. The vessel
transferred to the cable factory where umbilical
intended for an offshore gas field in Australia
was loaded. It then sailed
to Indonesia where the
loaded carousels were
transferred directly
to the OSV’s being
rigged as cable
layers.

A whole range of modern offshore projects require subsea
connections. The demand for subsea cable laying is
increasing in the coming years.

Stiffer cable types
are spooled up
under tension.
Subsea infrastructure takes many forms. Some are a single
power cable or a flexible pipe for gas or liquid transfer.
Others are highly complex umbilical cords where gas, fluids,
power supply, communication and data
links are all built into one.
Size and specifications on each
assignment will vary, but their numbers
are increasing.

Every installation is done according to client
specifications, but the components and
the various combinations of them, are all
thoroughly tested and commissioned

installations on the vessel, all necessary
equipment is pre-arranged in containers and

self-sustained units, which gives installation
arrangement flexibility.
The Drammen Yard Cable Carousel also
allows for swift de-mobilization and
‘mothballing’ when your ship is put to other
use. When the next assignment comes up,
your vessel may then be refitted for cable
laying, again in a matter of days.

Tanktop mounted carousel

Control
The main functions (movement) of the Tensioner and Carousel is based on
electric drives. The loading arm is hydraulically operated.
All units can in Auto mode be controlled from the main control unit. The Control
cabin contains the operator main HMI. In addition, radio control unit is used.
The design of the control units are based of high level of intelligent buses communicating
to local units. This to be able to implement remote diagnosis to shorten the time to rectify
problems.

vessel, the carousel
can be mounted on
tanktop. This retains the
vessels deckspace and
a favourable centre of
gravity.
Complete 3600 tons carousel
and loading gear on arrival in
Rotterdam April 2012. The rig
was built and assembled at
Drammen Yard and ferried to
Waalhaven area by barge. Here
it was reassembled and made
operational on to the clients
equipment.
