ROUTERS
SPRING 2016 TIPS AND COUPONS FOR THE WOODWORKER ROUTERS Trim routers are a good example of bang for your buck. They are lightweight, powerful and small enough to tackle jobs the bigger bulky routers shouldn't. Don't think that they can only trim laminate counter tops or edge banding. These little powerhouses deliver more and can be used in many areas of the shop. Take a look at sign making for instance. It can be done with a bigger router, but having a single handed router makes sign creation a lot easier on vertical surfaces. Shallow or deep cuts made with the cove or round nose router bits doesn't mean you need a lot of horsepower. Especially when made with a Klingspor router bit. Trim routers are sold as full kits with fixed/stationary bases and now with plunge bases. Something only their bigger siblings had before now. The market is starting to recognize the trim router as a more versatile tool for any woodworker or hobbyist. Silicon brushes are now available at Klingspor's Woodworking Shop. These non-stick glue brushes are designed to be used several times over. The silicon bristles that make up the brush allow for easy glue application and clean up is a snap! Once you finish applying glue, simply rinse the brush head off with warm water and soap. With every purchase of (PH12030) you get a bonus 1/2" brush tip for getting glue into narrow areas like rabbet joints and dados. The tips are easily swapped out by sliding the heads off and on the handle. The paddle end of the brush is ideal for dovetails, finger joints, and mortises. If the glue dries on the bristles don't worry! Dried wood or polyurethane glue cracks and pops right off the silicon bristles. Works with most woodworking glues. It's just a little surface rust! With winter over and spring in full swing, now is the time to think about rust. Heating the shop with Kerosene during the cold months adds heat and moisture to your shop. Maybe you just like to have the door open more when the weather gets nice. Either way oxygen, moisture and most machines having cast iron surfaces, equals rust. This can slow down a pass through the jointer or make pushing a board through the table saw tougher as well as dangerous. With so many products on the market which do you use? We have listed the best on the market that we offer. protect it with T-9 waterproof Lubricant (TB90004) In our research of all protectants, T-9 had the longest lasting protection against finger prints and watermarks. To help prevent rust after using saw blades or router bits, Trend Tool & Bit Cleaner (TD50000) will keep your cutters looking like new. This is best after cutting maple, cherry, poplar and pine to clean up the residue left behind. We also have products to help with the spring cleaning. Mohawk Finishes new Scratch & Mar Resistor Polish (M8110005) will help keep finger prints from appearing on your finished furniture. This non-silicone product helps break surface tension and doesn't allow the oil from fingers to be left behind. Helps future dusting and cleaning by not allowing dust to static cling to the finish. Does all of this and doesn't change the sheen of your existing finish. Bullfrog products of rust removers and blockers are some of the best on the market. If you have a saw that has bad rust or recently purchased an antique tool and want to restore it, Bullfrog Rust Remover (BF94236) with our Medium Sandflex block available in a 3 pack set, (SA99996) or our spindle mounted R-Flex (KA14000) will help remove the tough rust. Then using Bullfrog Fast Wax (BF98198) with the Fine Sandflex block gives your metal lasting protection with a smooth finish. If you have surface rust then we recommend the Rust and Stain Remover (TB00008) This little bottle is great when paired with our Fine Sandflex block. (SA99997) After the rust is gone and your left with a satin shine, Revitalize your existing furniture finishes with some cleaning and polishing. Mohawk Finishes offers Lemon Oil Polish (M1070466) offers cleaning and revitalizing oils to dried out finishes. This works great for Oil based finishes like varnish and polyurethanes. Transform hazing white finishes to a deep glowing luster like the day it was first finished. Doesn't leave a sticky residue or wax film. MODERN WOOD BOWLS Thomas Haapapuru is from Charlotte, North Carolina. He is another unique artist, with talents as far-reaching as woodworking to the depths of creative writing. Thomas has been featured in numerous magazine articles, in galleries all over the southeastern US, and in advertisements and catalogs for King Arthur’s Tools. Thomas began woodworking about eight years ago. He received no formal training, or worked with wood before. He set up shop in his kitchen, bought a few books and pieces of pine, and started learning how to make all the joints shown in the books. From there he started duplicating simple projects. “I started to research wood sculpting tools, and came across KATools in a web search. I was intrigued by their design and variety. My first purchase was the Merlin set and a Lancelot grinder. Those two tools opened the world of wood sculpture up to me more than any other tools had previously,” says Thomas. Thomas originally worked with the Lancelot and Merlin to develop his own techniques with the tools. Then he picked up the Guinevere Sander, and has literally “shaved away” an enormous amount of time previously spent on smoothing his work. Thomas explains, “I’ve been exploring with King Arthur’s Tools on sculptural furniture. I just finished my stool and am currently working on a snowboard bench seat are made of old snow boards, made exclusively with the Lancelot and the Guinevere. These tools are very freeing and make large works that are stable. I’ve been exploring that over the past year.” TREND WILL BE 15% OFF* DURING OUR ASHEVILLE ANNIVERSARY SALE GOING ON AT ALL STORES MARCH 19TH, 2016 * EXCLUDES AIRPRO ITEMS Thomas Haapapuru will be a demonstrator along with Morris Schlesinger who will be demonstrating why DIAMOND is KING! at the North Carolina Woodcarving Festival March 19th in Raleigh, NC KLINGSPOR’S WOODWORKING SHOP • SAWDUST Burial Urns for Veterans A Community Outreach Project of ncwoodworker.net The BURIAL URNS FOR VETERANS PROJECT, was initiated in 2015, here in North Carolina. The purpose of the project, is to insure every veteran, whose cremains are interred, in any State, or National Cemetery in North Carolina, is provided with a quality wooden burial urn. When it was learned that many veterans cremains, were being interred in cardboard boxes, and in other even less honorable containers in North Carolina Veterans Cemeteries, members of ncwoodworker.net, banded together, to make, and provide, free of charge, wooden burial urns. Families of veterans who arrive at any of our N.C. State or National Veterans Cemeteries, bringing the cremains of a veteran for internment there, need only ask at the cemetery office prior to the time of internment, and a burial urn will be provided, free of charge, for your veteran's cremains. The cemetery staff may assist you in placing the ashes in the urn. Participating cemeteries in North Carolina Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury Raleigh National Cemetery, Raleigh Wilmington National Cemetery, Wilmington Newbern National Cemetery, Newbern Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Spring Lake Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Goldsboro Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain ncwoodworker.net members are proud to be able to provide this final act of respect and honor to those men and women, who have so selflessly, served our great nation to preserve our freedom. Drum Sanders Drum Sanders are becoming a staple in most wood shops. With many sizes and options available, a drum sander might be worth looking into. For anyone who has owned a planer will tell you, end grain and figured wood do not plane well. With a drum sander you can easily flatten most work pieces quickly. With a clean flat surface left, finishing your project will be fast and easy. Cutting boards, figured box lids, small table tops and even cabinet doors can be sanded smooth. Options for drum sanders are closed end and open end. The SuperMax 19-38 is a great all around drum sander. The 19" long drum can take wood up to 4" thick and down to as delicate as 1/32" With a 5" diameter drum running 1740 RPM on a 1-3/4 HP motor, this sander has what it takes to get the job done. Have a board that is 36" wide? After the first pass at 19" you can then flip the piece around, 180 degrees, and then sand the other half for a full 38" total sanding width. That's the versatility with open end drum sanders. Available from Klingspor's Woodworking Shop are 3"x18mt rolls. This gives you up to 6 wraps from just one roll! KLINGSPOR’S WOODWORKING SHOP • SAWDUST MDF/Particle Board Sanding with Timbermate Products Have you ever thought you were going to throw out your back picking up a small dresser? The increased demand for cheaper build materials has been in full swing. Materials like MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), OSB (Oriented Strand Board) and even Particle Board are cheap alternatives. The materials in these products are often waste from wood manufacturing processes. Sawdust, wood chips and planer shavings all play a part. The waste materials, mixed with resins, create these pressed wood boards. This type of sheet goods make for a finishing nightmare. Typically there are large voids and expanding fibers to contend with. Putty, fillers, primers and even epoxies are needed to create a smooth finish. MDF can be the most problematic of them all. With wood fibers tightly pressed as part of it's construction, the fibers always want to release. Some furniture made with MDF parts are an issue for finisher and refinishers alike. When the surface laminate on MDF becomes open, the fibers want to blossom like a flower. This can be stopped by applying putty or filler onto the area. Timbermate products are a great filler for MDF. Sawing, milling, routing, screwing and nailing can all be done after Timbermate has dried. You can thin Timbermate down with water (5-10%) to make it more of a grain filler. You can also apply Timbermate to surfaces that need to be carpeted like a subwoofer enclosure. This will help the adhesive of the carpet stick to the bonded area of Timbermate instead of the loose fibers on the edge. Timbermate is also helpful on the raw edges of MDF and Particle board. Sand smooth with the Tru-Blu (KD71020) sandpaper found at Klingspor's Woodworking Shop. This material lasts longer and you'll have a much better finish. Start with 120 grit and then 180 grit on the raw MDF edge before applying Timbermate. Finish off the treated edge of the MDF with 240 grit Tru-Blu before applying finish. Once you have applied a top coat the Timbermate it will become a permanent substrate. e e y o l p m e t spotligh WATER BASED WOODFILLER - 8 OZ Chestnut Red Oak TG25000 ....$7.95 TG25007 ......$7.95 Heart Pine / Teak Ebony TG25001 ......$7.95 TG25008 ......$7.95 Brazil Cherry Walnut TG25002 ......$7.95 TG25009 ......$7.95 Cherry White TG25003 ......$7.95 TG25010 ......$7.95 Mahogany White Oak TG25004 ......$7.95 TG25011 ......$7.95 Maple/Ash/Pine Alder TG25005 ......$7.95 TG25012 ......$7.95 Natural Tint Base Tasmanian Oak TG25006 ......$7.95 TG25013 ......$7.95 QUARTS AVAILABLE FOR............................$17.95 SAMPLE FOR ONLY $ 1.00 Timbermate samples are available for $1.00 at any KWWS Retail Location. KLINGSPOR’S WOODWORKING SHOP • SAWDUST For Beginner Woodchucks Understanding the Lumber Yard Rough lumber thicknesses are measured by quarters of an inch. Thinnest rough lumber measurements are 4/4 or one inch thick. Rough lumber goes through a milling process to smooth it down. This is called surfacing or planed. This will take away up to 3/16" of an inch. Normally surfaced lumber on both sides measures 13/16' thick. Many lumber yards maintain surfaced boards are still 4/4 thick. 4/4 (1") and 8/4 (2") are commonly stocked thicknesses. Dimensional lumber is measured in Board Footage not lineal footage. A board 4/4 or 1" thick then multiplied by the width and length. The formula is ( 1 x 12 x 12 = 144) or one board foot. Once you have established how many cubic inches are in a board you divide by 144. Example: 1"x 24"Long x 6"Wide equals 144 cubic inches or One Board Foot. 4/4 board Formula: Example: 1" x 96"L x 5"W = 480 cu in 480 ÷ 144 = 3.3333 board feet. 8/4 boards you still divide by 144. Example 2" x 96"L x 5"W = 960 960 ÷ 144 = 6.6667 board feet. Photo courtesy of Popular Woodworker Magazine Adirondack Chairs Simple design never goes out of style. The Adirondack Chair offers an easy to build design and allows for years of relaxing. Since 1903, people have been enjoying the Adirondack Chair. Now you can build and enjoy this rather inexpensive chair at home. Our "Adirondack Plus" (VT50501) plans feature full-size plans for a chair/rocker in addition to the footstool. With these plans you can either make the chair or convert into a rocking chair. Since this chair is made for outside use, one of the best wooden materials to use is Cypress. The oils in the heartwood allow it to be durable, especially when exposed to exterior weather conditions. The Cypress lumber we offer is grown in the South Eastern US. It's surfaced on both sides, kiln dried and available in 6" & 8" widths at $4.25 a board foot. Check out your local Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop for the Cypress in stock.
