Booking & Card Fees
For certain performances, the ticket price is listed
as being "+ booking fee". This is because the event's
promoter is selling tickets through a variety of
different outlets (eg Ticketmaster, Ticketweb, etc)
and each of those may charge a different fee. Please
note that the booking fee is charged on each ticket
on all transaction types (ie telephone, internet, in
person). If you pay by credit or debit card, there will
be a 50p fee. We are obliged to show these charges
as separate fees and apologise for any confusion
that this causes.
Starting Times
For the majority of events at The Queen's Hall, the
time listed in this brochure is when the artist will
begin the performance. When we don't have that
information (eg for touring artists with variable
schedules) we will list the 'Doors Open' time
instead. Please contact us on the afternoon of the
concert for a confirmed schedule.

Spring Is The Coolest Month

Rites of Spring
We're starting 2013 as we mean to
go on with over 50 shows to kickstart
your musical New Year. We've also got
a couple of special projects that we've
been developing to showcase the best
new and established musicians.
(Photo: Karine Polwart Fri 30 November 2012, The Queen's Hall)
Youth Brigade
For the second year, we're collaborating
with the City of Edinburgh Council's
Music Service to present Resonate, an
exciting series of concerts showcasing
the wide ranging talent of young
musicians from Edinburgh schools. Over
five nights in March you can expect
everything from solo clarsach to full
orchestras. Music education is a critical
part of young peoples' development and
these nights will showcase the powerful
benefits that it offers.
State of Alert
In March and May, we are involved in
The J-Word, a new collaboration of
leading venues committed to sharing
the best live music in the world. This has
made it possible for us to bring major
international acts like Yellowjackets and
Trilok Gurtu/Paolo Fresu/Omar Sosa
to the UK and also present Scottish
musicians alongside them. Expect
something magical.

The Great

Caravan are the unsung heroes of the
British Prog movement. Often quoted as
being one of the most formidable acts to
emerge from the '60s progressive scene,
they achieved cult status and a passionate
following. Formed in 1968, Caravan were at
the heart of the Canterbury rock movement
with Soft Machine and Gong, producing their
own brand of "superior pop music, full of
taste, craftsmanship and hard work" (NME).
This tour celebrates the 40th Anniversary of
their fifth album For Girls Who Grow Plump
In The Night.
David Afkham - Conductor
Francesco Piemontesi - Piano
Begin 2013 in the company of two brilliant
and charismatic young artists. David
Afkham’s awards, prizes and plaudits make
impressive reading: he has captured the
attention of musicians and public alike,
and makes his SCO debut with a typically
ambitious bill. Schubert’s Great C major
is not for the faint-hearted; for most
of the 19th century it was considered
unperformable. Now a firmly established
favourite, it remains an epic musical journey.
Piemontesi returns to the SCO, a pianist as
charming as he is formidable.

Richard Egarr - Conductor/Fortepiano
Andrew Manze - Conductor
David Watkin - Cello
Between classics by Schubert and
Beethoven, SCO Associate Artist
Richard Egarr introduces one of their
contemporaries who deserves to be far
better known. Dussek certainly had a
colourful life: his brilliance as pianist and
composer won him the favour of Catherine
the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte. In his
legacy of 18 piano concertos you can clearly
hear the future piano styles of Liszt, Chopin
and Schumann.
Now established as an exceptionally fine
conductor, Andrew Manze is a musician of
great range and curiosity. In this programme,
he typically takes a familiar work - in this
case Beethoven’s First Symphony - and
gives it an intriguing context: Mendelssohn
is in Beethovenian form in the little known
overture and Schumann meltingly Romantic
in the Cello Concerto. Rolf Martinsson’s
reflection on Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht
may last only 10 minutes, but it makes a
memorable impression, paving the way for
the youthful blaze of Beethoven’s symphony.

March 2012, the soloists and chorus of the
acclaimed Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan

The Heath Quartet are one of the most
exciting and original voices to emerge on

recent years. They are joined in Edinburgh by
their friend and mentor Isabel Charisius, the
distinguished violist of the legendary Alban
Berg Quartet, for a performance of one of
Mendelssohn’s great ensemble works, his
second string quartet. Appropriately, this will
be preceded by Alban Berg’s masterpiece
of 1909/10, his Opus 3 Quartet and by
Mozart’s radiant Quartet in E flat K 428.
Along with a host of well-known solos and
ensembles from the Savoy Operas, the

2013: Final Concert
Sat 9 March, 7pm
“Everyone should have a
will. That’s how you provide
for family and friends. But
you can do a lot by leaving
a legacy to a Love the arts,
Leave to the arts charity.
Why not use your will to help
the vibrant cultural life that
makes Scotland such a fine
place to live. A legacy to the
arts is a small gesture that
makes a very big difference.”
(Alexander McCall Smith,
Author and Art Lover)
One of the most valuable gifts you can
give someone is a legacy. After you have
provided for family and friends, why
not help continue our work for future
generations and leave a percentage
of your estate to The Queen's Hall?
You could reduce inheritance tax too.
During February 2013, you will have the
opportunity to get a basic will written,
or amended, free of charge if you leave a
legacy to an arts charity.
The culmination of this Festival is a two-part
concert comprising in the first half an hourlong showcase of outstanding performances
selected from a range of classes across the
Festival, and after the interval the Final of
the Festival's Concerto Class in which four
soloists perform movements from major
Concertos, accompanied by The Friends of
The Festival Orchestra conducted by James

chance, but structured, selection from the
quartet’s favourite 40 works. The informal
atmosphere will provide an ideal platform for
the Brodsky’s communication skills and their
inspirational playing, and promises a joyous
evening to conclude the New Town Concerts
2012/13 season.
The award winning Dunedin Consort
presents its annual performance of one of
Bach's most gripping works at the time of
year when its powerful message is most
often contemplated.
Its eight main soloists perform also in the
choruses, bringing a level of intimacy and
drama that bigger forces cannot match.
Bach intersperses the passion narrative
with profoundly expressive choruses, arias
and chorales producing a work of intense
emotional impact that has justly become
one of the pillars of Western classical music.
Sung in German.

performance reached deep into the heart"

Since forming in 2000, Dundee's The Hazey

Their most recent album The Winter That

Scottish album of the year” (Daily Record)
and they recently supported Wilco on their
Autumn 2012 tour.
Glasgow's Eugene Twist has made a big

In the enviable position of writing most of
his music for musicians that he knew well,
Haydn peppered his work with wonderful
solos - his Sinfonia Concertante is awash
in them. Janiczek has built a fascinating
programme around it, with two short pieces
from the 20th century; Strauss’ moonlit

finale: the second symphony of Haydn’s own
troublesome pupil.

Two centuries separate them, but Britten

The Incredible Sound
of Stan Kenton
Wed 24 April, 7.30pm
Thu 25 April, 7.30pm
Tales from Wrestling Past
Stan Kenton was one of jazz’s great
visionaries and during his 40 years as
bandleader, he lived his theme song,
Artistry in Rhythm, to the full. He introduced
string sections and French horns, Latin
American and European classical influences
to the jazz big band palette in a search for
ever bigger sounds and ever more vivid
orchestral colours. The SNJO’s tribute
to Kenton will celebrate the power and
contrasts in his vast repertoire, ranging
from the reflective to the riotously
expressive and always richly swinging.
Mick Foley is a former WWE champion,
New York Times best-selling author and
now a comedian embarking on his debut
UK tour with his show Tales From Wrestling
Past. Following huge success at Montreal’s
Just For Laughs Festival and Edinburgh
Festival Fringe in 2012, Mick is taking his
combination of wit and easy-going charm
on the road with stories from his fascinating
life.
Acclaimed as one of the most entertaining
talkers in professional wrestling, Mick
has bled and sweated for hundreds of
thousands of fans all across the world. Now
he's exchanged the world of headlocks,
steel chairs and punches for the world of
stories, banter and punch lines.
