We've also got a couple of special projects that we've been developing to showcase the best new and established musicians. (Photo: Karine Polwart Fri 30 November 2012, The Queen's Hall) Youth Brigade For the second year, we're collaborating with the City of Edinburgh Council's Music Service to present Resonate, an exciting series of concerts showcasing the wide ranging talent of young musicians from Edinburgh schools. Over five nights in March you can expect everything from solo clarsach to full orchestras. Music education is a critical part of young peoples' development and these nights will showcase the powerful benefits that it offers. State of Alert In March and May, we are involved in The J-Word, a new collaboration of leading venues committed to sharing the best live music in the world. This has made it possible for us to bring major international acts like Yellowjackets and Trilok Gurtu/Paolo Fresu/Omar Sosa to the UK and also present Scottish musicians alongside them. Expect something magical. (Photo credit: Dylan Wolf) The Great C Major Caravan are the unsung heroes of the British Prog movement. Often quoted as being one of the most formidable acts to emerge from the '60s progressive scene, they achieved cult status and a passionate following. Formed in 1968, Caravan were at the heart of the Canterbury rock movement with Soft Machine and Gong, producing their own brand of "superior pop music, full of taste, craftsmanship and hard work" (NME). This tour celebrates the 40th Anniversary of their fifth album For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night. David Afkham - Conductor Francesco Piemontesi - Piano Begin 2013 in the company of two brilliant and charismatic young artists. David Afkham’s awards, prizes and plaudits make impressive reading: he has captured the attention of musicians and public alike, and makes his SCO debut with a typically ambitious bill. Schubert’s Great C major is not for the faint-hearted; for most of the 19th century it was considered unperformable. Now a firmly established favourite, it remains an epic musical journey. Piemontesi returns to the SCO, a pianist as charming as he is formidable. Dussek certainly had a colourful life: his brilliance as pianist and composer won him the favour of Catherine the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte. In his legacy of 18 piano concertos you can clearly hear the future piano styles of Liszt, Chopin and Schumann. Now established as an exceptionally fine conductor, Andrew Manze is a musician of great range and curiosity. In this programme, he typically takes a familiar work - in this case Beethoven’s First Symphony - and gives it an intriguing context: Mendelssohn is in Beethovenian form in the little known overture and Schumann meltingly Romantic in the Cello Concerto. Rolf Martinsson’s reflection on Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht may last only 10 minutes, but it makes a memorable impression, paving the way for the youthful blaze of Beethoven’s symphony. Pre-Concert Talk, 6.30pm Richard Egarr talks about Jan Ladislav Dussek and his contemporaries (free to ticket holders) Tickets £10 - £29 (concessions available) Website www.sco.org.uk Tickets £10 - £29 (concessions available) Website www.sco.org.uk 5 Scottish Chamber Orchestra Banff Mountain Film Festival Banff Mountain Film Festival Thu 31 January, 7.30pm Fri 1 February, 7.30pm Stravinsky Pulcinella: Suite MacMillan Oboe Concerto (Scottish premiere) Mendelssohn Symphony No 4 ‘Italian’ Following sold out shows across the UK in 2012, the world’s most prestigious mountain film festival returns to The Queen’s Hall with a new selection of even more extraordinary short films from the world's leading adventure film makers. Strauss Sextet from Capriccio Haydn Sinfonia Concertante Webern Five Pieces Op 5 Beethoven Symphony No 2 Eric Johnson is one of the premier guitar players in contemporary music with a Grammy Award, a platinum album, Top 10 hits like Cliffs of Dover and praise from critics and his peers. Alexander Janiczek - Violin/Director David Watkin - Cello; Robin Williams - Oboe Peter Whelan - Bassoon In the enviable position of writing most of his music for musicians that he knew well, Haydn peppered his work with wonderful solos - his Sinfonia Concertante is awash in them. Janiczek has built a fascinating programme around it, with two short pieces from the 20th century; Strauss’ moonlit sextet is as expansive as Webern’s Five Pieces are tiny and dense.
