Facility Guide
Triangle Sports Commission
Based in Cary, North Carolina, a hub for amateur sports, the Triangle Sports Commission
(TSC) is dedicated to promoting North Carolina’s Triangle area as a major sports destination,
particularly for Olympic and amateur sports. The TSC favors sports events and activities that
help unify the region and substantiate the Triangle’s frequent high rankings as one of America’s best places to live. The TSC is a North Carolina non-profit corporation headed by a
Board of Directors comprised of local leaders. It is an affiliate of North Carolina Amateur
Sports, one of our country’s oldest sports commissions, which owns and produces the State
Games of North Carolina and Cycle North Carolina.

Welcome to the Triangle!
Centered around the internationally renowned Research Triangle Park, the world’s largest corporate research park, North Carolina’s Triangle region is consistently rated one of the
nation’s top places to live, work and play. Comprised of Wake, Durham and Orange counties
and the major municipalities of Raleigh, Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill, the Triangle boasts a
population of over 1.3 million with the highest number of PhD’s per capita in the country.
With top universities such as Duke, NC State, NC Central and the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, the educational attainment of the residents should not be a surprise.
However, the breadth and depth of the Triangle’s sports infrastructure might be.
A few years ago one of the top executives of TSE, an international consultancy specializing in sports economic development and tourism, paid a visit to the Triangle from TSE’s
headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. After a whirlwind tour of the Triangle’s sports facilities,
the executive commented, “Our company has been involved in numerous Olympic bids, and
the Triangle—an area I was not familiar with—has more venues then 90% of those bid cities!”
Our first Triangle Sports Facility Guide therefore, tries to unveil what apparently has
been something of a well kept secret—that is, our region has an incredible multiplicity of great
venues. Consider that on certain fall dates, the region seats over 150,000 college football fans
in four venues—on a single day! Or that during basketball season, we have weekends where
men’s and women’s Division I college basketball is played in as many as six different venues
ranging in capacity from 3,000 to over 21,500.
But we are not just about collegiate sports. In fact, the Triangle has a widespread reputation as a leader in Olympic and amateur sports—especially large multi-sport events, such as
the U.S. Olympic Festival, the Special Olympics World Summer Games and the State Games
of North Carolina, among others.
A number of high-quality municipal venues add to the Triangle’s prestigious facility array. WakeMed Soccer Park and Cross Country Course, Cary Tennis Park, and the USA Baseball National Training Complex, all in Cary, have hosted a number of the nation’s top competitions. Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center, the WRAL Soccer Center, Walnut Creek Softball
Complex, and Pullen Aquatic Center, all in Raleigh, are national caliber as well.
The challenge, therefore, in selecting the Triangle for a sporting event may not be finding a suitable venue, but rather choosing the best venue from so many good choices. But
what a great problem to have!
So we don’t think we’re exaggerating when we say, “We have it all in the Triangle.” Our
goal is to make sure there is no need or desire to take a major sports event anywhere else.
