Message from Ihor Chyzowych - President – Ukrainian American Sports Club
In 2007 the Ukrainian American Sports Center (UASC) Tryzub continued, as in the past, to flourish, develop new
opportunities, achieving new accomplishments and set new milestones. Our Ukrainian Nationals (The sport section of
TRYZUB) also had a great year, competing in soccer, tennis, swimming, golf, and chess.
More than 25 youth teams and the Majors team brought championships and trophies to our club. The Majors team
once again won the Ukrainian Sports Association of America and Canada championship, and achieved Third place in
the United Soccer league 2006/2007 season which ended in June 2007. The swimming team came in second place in
the USCAK championship held over the Labor Day weekend at the UNA homestead in Kerhonkson, New York. The
chess tournament that was held in New Jersey our player tied for first place.
We also organized and hosted a tennis tournament in the spring and fall of this year. A golf tournament was organized
and hosted in June at Limekilm Golf Course. In addition, the Ukrainian Nationals organized and ran a very successful
youth soccer tournament over the Memorial day weekend at our club and various local fields.
The Directors of TRYZUB are very thankful and very proud of all the accomplishments. Congratulations are extended
to all players, parents, coaches, and managers. It was another successful year with a great job by all.
As to the “Tryzubiwka” facility, we made a series of improvements to our soccer fields, the building, and the grounds in
general. Certainly everyone noticed that our grounds and buildings looked especially clean and well kept this year. For
this we owe our thanks to our caretaker and his wife.
As you know, we run several fund raising events every year to help us maintain our sports facilities and expand our
activities. This year was no exception. We ran four successful fund raising events outdoors and one indoors. These
were the father’s day festival, Ukraine’s Independence day Anniversary celebration, opening of soccer season picnic,
and the Oktoberfest. The inside events were the wine tasting fund raiser and the Thanksgiving Dinner. Thousands of
people attended, coming from all over the area and region. More than one thousand people attended the Ukrainian
Independence Day Festival alone. People traveled from Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut
and other nearby states. They came to enjoy the entertainment-music, ethnic food, and Ukrainian Folk Dancing.
None of these highly successful events would have been possible without a great number of tireless volunteer-helpers
who took times away from their own families and weekends to ensure that our facility and our programs could be first
class and that our youth could continue to participate in top level competitions and activities.
We are fortunate to have, and extremely grateful for each and every volunteer. The TRYZUB organization has
flourished for the last 57 years because of such dedicated people. Please join me in thanking them, and in working to
ensure that we continue to build this base of support, as it is indeed, our future.
In summary, 2007 was a stellar year. We hope that 2008 will be just as good or even better. We also hope that our
volunteer Directors and all helper-Volunteers stay healthy and dedicated to helping UASC TRYZUB remain a vibrant
part of our community and a vital aspect of our children’s families for many, many years to come.
We wish you a happy and healthy New Year

The year 2007 was another memorable one for the Ukrainian
Nationals. We had an all-time high of 23 youth travel
teams, from U-8 to U-17, plus the Majors and Mens U-23
teams. Highlights included our U-23 men winning the
State Cup competition and the Majors winning the USCAK
North American Ukrainian club competition for the third time
in four years. New teams this year included two U-8 Boys
teams (Thunder and Fury), a U-8 Girls team (Puddle Ducks)
and a U-16 Boys Juniors team (Great Danes). Welcome to
all new members!
Our sixth annual Ukrainian Nationals Invitational
Memorial Day Soccer tournament was the most
successful yet. The tournament committee made it look
easy (even though with 128 teams we all know it wasn’t)
and together with the parent and player volunteers made
our guests feel very welcome at our club. We received
numerous compliments from the guest teams and expect
many to be back next year. If you’re still looking to get
involved in next year’s tournament, it’s never too late to join
the committee.
We finally completed the installation of new lighting on
Fields #3 and #5 and this year’s electric bills are showing
that they are being put into good use. Listening to
members’ suggestions, we also added lighting along the way
to the practice fields from the parking area. The 4th year of
our field maintenance program has shown major
improvements in the conditions of all the fields, especially
Fields #1 and #2. In November, we started a major repair
and seeding program for Field #5 which will be closed down
for spring 2008, but hopefully will be ready for the Memorial
Day Tournament.

The club hosted many events including our annual
Independence Day Picnic, Wine Tasting Event, and our first
Oktoberfest. Whether you’ve been a member for awhile or
our new to the club, we can always use more help, so you’re
invited to join one of our committees to help make 2008 the
best year yet.

History of the Ukrainian Nationals Soccer
Our clubs achievements are illustrated at the US Soccer Hall of Fame
First fielded in 1950, “Tryzub’s” amateur soccer team rapidly became the premier
professional soccer franchise in the United States. In 1959, the club acquired the American
Soccer League’s Philadelphia Nationals, aptly renamed it the Philadelphia Ukrainian
Nationals and proceeded to win the U.S. Open Cup Championship the very following year.
No one will ever forget the fever-pitched deafening thunder of the Ukrainian American
community’s cheers as “Nasha Druzhyna” (“Our Team”) reached the heights of success.
Some highlights include:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
1956 - U.S. Amateur Cup Final in St. Louis, Missouri
1960’s – Six American Soccer League Professional Championships
1960”s / 70’s Three German American Professional League Championships
1960, 61, 63, and 66 – Four U.S. Open Cup Professional Championships
1960’s – Five U.S. Open Cup Finals
Fifteen Pennsylvania State Open Cup Championships
Eleven United Soccer League Majors Division Championships
Six Inter-County Soccer League Majors Division Championships
Tryzub’s was the first soccer team in the United States to have home games televised and played
in the first indoor regulation soccer game in Convention Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey. Soccer teams
from around the world visited Philadelphia to play “Our Team”: Manchester United, England;
Dundee, Scotland; Stuttgart, West Germany. In 1967, the Ukrainian Nationals represented the
United States in international competition before 102,000 fans in El Salvador.
After a number of additional professional years in the German American League of New York,
Tryzub focused its efforts on amateur soccer and the development of a youth program. In 1978, the
club purchased 38 acres of farmland in Horsham, Pennsylvania and transformed them into a premier
amateur soccer venue with six fields, sports field lighting, a clubhouse and picnic grove. Youth teams,
boys’ and girls’, in age brackets between “Under 8” and “Under 19” years of age, play under the
Ukrainian National’s flag. An exceptionally dedicated crew of coaches and parents and an
outstanding leadership team has made “Our Club” a most desirable place for children to play and
learn soccer. We have the facilities where children can learn to sharpen their skills.
The First Ukrainian Nationals Invitational Tournament, held over Memorial Day weekend, 2002,
was a resounding success. In 2004 and 2005 our Majors team won back-to-back USCAK Cups
Championships as the best Ukrainian soccer team in North America. In the 2005-06 season the
Majors team swept all local honors, which included championships in the United Soccer League as
well as the Eastern PA US Open and Amateur Cups. For the 2007-08 seasons, we have 23 youth
and 3 junior teams competing together with our top Majors and Men’s Over-30 teams.

2007 U.S.C.A.K- East Soccer Championship
The 2007 U.S.C.A.K (Ukrainian Sports Central for America and Canada) Men’s Soccer
Tournament was held in Syracuse, New York on Saturday July 21, 2007. The host of this year’s
event was the Ukrainian Sports Club “Ukraina” from Syracuse, New York. Six Ukrainian Soccer Clubs
sent teams to compete for this years U.S.C.A.K. East Trophy. The teams were divided into two
groups of three teams each. The games were played in two 25 minute halves using a round robin
system.
Group A included Toronto, Canada- “Ukraina”, Yonkers, New York- “Krylati” and the Ukrainian
Nationals “Tryzub” from Horsham, Pa.
Group B included New York Soccer Club -“YCK”, Whippany, New Jersey - “Chornomorska Sitch”,
and the Ukrainian Sports Club- “Ukraina” from Syracuse New York.
During Group A competition, Tryzub won their first game 5 to 1 against Toronto “Ukraina”. The next
game was a very competitive gave that came in the favor of Yonkers “Krylati”. They won the round
robin match 2 goals to 1. In the final Group A match, Yonkers “Krylati” beat Toronto “Ukraina” 3 to 0
in a hard fought match.
The Final Group A results were Yonkers with 6 points, Tryzub with 3 points, and Toronto with 0
points.
In Group B competition; “Sitch” from Whippany had 6 points, “Ukraina” from Syracuse had 3 points
and YCK from New York had 0 points.
Semi-final match #1 was “Tryzub” against “Chornomorska Sitch”. The Tryzub squad played the full
game with 10 players due to a leg injury. The results were Tryzub 2 goals - Sitch 0. Thus, the Tryzub
Men’s team advanced to the finals of the tournament.
Semi-final Match #2 was Yonkers “Krylati” against Syracuse” Ukraina”. Yonkers prevailed with a
victory based on penalty kicks after completing the full game as a tie. Thus the finals for the 2007
USCAK trophy will be Ukrainian Nationals “Tryzub” against Yonkers “Krylati”.
The finals were a tough match because Tryzub had to compete once again with only 10 players on
the fields with no substitutes. Yonkers came well prepared with 15 players. Our players were
exhausted, but they continued to hold the defensive line. Constant attacks by Yonkers resulted in only
1 goal. Tryzub won by a score of 2 to 1 with both goals by Vergis Anusauskas. Tryzub’s Team was
awarded the 2007 USCAK EAST trophy and each player received individual medals. The tournament
committee also voted Tryzub’s Ryan Gilespy as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The 4
hour trip home by car didn’t seem that long. The manager of the Tryzub team is Mike Jurchak and the
acting coach for the tournament was Dino Tomasos, because Petro Borectsky was away on
business.

In the Phoenix game, the Nats’ Dan Doe scored the games only goal on a beautiful crossing pass
from Dima Tupitsyn in the first half.
In the Delco game, Tryzub was missing 3 starting midfielders. The resulting tied game was
determined by solid defensive play and outstanding goaltending by Michael Henry. It should be noted
that the starting line-up of the Delco team consisted of players from Division 1 college programs
including several "All American" and nationally known and ranked players.
In the UGH game, goals were scored by Stephen Chareczko, Eber Duque, Diego Palacios and
Lawrence Vincent. The score was 3-1 at the half.
There are some new Ukrainian faces on the current team roster: Mark Chajkowsky, Stephen
Chareczko, Andriy Krylyuk and Dima Tupitsyn. A 5th Ukrainian, goalie Christopher Rizanow, is out
due to a long term injury (broken cheekbone).

Memorial Day Weekend 2007
Participate in the Sixth Annual
Ukrainian Nationals Invitational Youth Soccer
Tournament
Horsham, Pa. – The Ukrainian American Sport Center – “Tryzub”, County Line and Lower
State Roads, hosted its sixth annual Ukrainian Nationals Invitational Soccer Tournament. The
competition not only drew a strong representation from local Southeastern Pennsylvania clubs, but
also had a decided interstate and international character. Nearly half of the 128 teams competing in
this year’s Memorial Day Weekend tournament haled from Canada, North Central Pennsylvania,
Northeast Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Long Island, NY and other
areas of New York State.
The Ukrainian Soccer Club “Karpaty” from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, sent three boys’ teams
to the UNI tournament. A dynamic soccer club from North Central Pennsylvania, “Second to None”,
on the other hand, sent 18 strong teams into the competition. Ukrainian Nationals President, Taras
Kozak, and Tryzub’s Vice President of Public Relations, Gene Luciw, presented both Clubs with
Tryzub’s pennant.
Notably, the Tryzub pennants were from a series of banners that Tryzub had prepared for
exchange during its years as a professional soccer team, formally representing the City of
Philadelphia. The Nat’s had presented similar mementos to opponents in its multiple U.S. Open Cup
and American Soccer League Championship games and, more recently, to its opponents in
significant U. S. Amateur and Open Cup games.
Tournament play in age brackets from Under-8 through Under-19, boys and girls, progressed
over the weekend on not only the Ukrainian Nationals’ six home fields at “Tryzubiwka”, but also on 12
more fields located at Windlestrae Park/Zehr Fields (Montgomery Soccer Club’s home) and Igoe
Porter Wellings Fields (Nike) (Warrington Soccer Club’s home).
The competition began on Friday night under the lights of two Tryzubiwka fields, progressed
throughout the day on Saturday and culminated in a long sequence of “finals” on Sunday. A soccer
Mom’s and Dad’s appreciation night with free food donated by local hotels and free entertainment
also highlighted the event as hundreds of parents and competitors gathered in the Ukrainian
American Sport Center’s clubhouse and lighted festival grove and pavilions.
A group of referees enjoying homemade pyrohy exchanged a sentiment: “Wow! What a thrill it
is to ref such good teams from such distant places. It’s not just ‘the same old teams’. All of the players
are digging really hard and showing their best stuff.”
Second to None Club’s head trainer, Rob Eaton, added. “Our Club has been to a great
number of tournaments throughout the United States.” This is quite simply the best. The Ukrainian
Nationals have given us the privilege of enjoying great fields, great referees, and a very high caliber
of competition. The Ukrainian Nationals pennant will have a place of honor in our clubhouse.”
Tournament director Dan Nysch described it all as “Simply Awesome”. “When we gathered so
many months ago to plan this event, we never dreamt of these dimensions. I thank the tournament
committee and all of the volunteers from the depth of my heart.”

Upkeep – Renovations - Improvements
During the year 2007
The 38 acres of the Ukrainian American Sports Center along with the buildings and Pavilions
require constant maintenance, upkeep, and renovations / improvements. During the year 2007 many
activities were required to keep the facilities at a top level. This year dead trees were removed and
disposed, bushes and trees were trimmed, and new bushes were planted. Flowers were planted in
areas around the flag poles and in the picnic grove. Throughout the year various maintenance and
repairs were done. Some of the major work performed included:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Re-staining the outdoor dance pavilion and stage area, this included all of the picnic tables
and benches
Installed a new railing at the main entrance to our Club House
Replaced 6 light fixtures in the parking lot and the picnic grove
The original section of the club house was painted
The biggest improvement involved increasing the electrical capacity provided to our site.
We had a total of 400 amps serving our facility for all use points. This was totally
inadequate due to the expanding capabilities provided at our club. On numerous
occasions our circuit breakers would trip. Two individuals ( Ted Kulp and Jerry Kozak )
spent over 30 days planning, procuring material, and installing the new electrical service.
The new electrical capacity is 1600 amps with two transformers. A new transformer was
installed next to the club house and the existing transformer located near the play ground.
The new service has 400 amp service and a separate meter for the sports lights on the
soccer fields. 1000amp capacity and a separate meter for the club house, garage,
buildings in the picnic grove, and the exterior lights. A new meter and 200 amp service
was installed for the caretakers apartment. The total cost for this work was$ 18,000. for
the materials only. All labor required for the installation was donated by the individuals
listed above.
Sports lights were installed on soccer field # 5, an 8v8 field used by our younger teams.
The cost of this installation was $ 43,000. This was paid by Ukrainian Nationals
organization which has organized the annual UNI Memorial Day Soccer Tournament. The
proceeds from this annual event were used to fund this project. We now have two lighted
fields that can be used for practice in the evenings or for night games. We also want to
thank Bill Stefurak, who was the project manger for this project. It took two years of
planning, negotiations, local permit approvals and construction. The work will benefit our
soccer players for many years to come.
Additional refrigerators and freezer capacity were added to the Kitchen and basement
areas.
New HD flat panel Plasma and LCD TV’s were added to our Club house.
Two used utility vehicles were purchased for use during tournaments and for maintenance
activities
The following two major projects are planned for the year 2008. New flooring material for the older
portion of our main hall will replace the worn carpet. The carpet will be replaced with a wood parquet
section and a ceramic tile section. The second project is the installation of public water to our club.
Currently the facility is served with well water. We need volunteers (labor) and financial help to
complete these projects. All donations are tax deductible. If you can donate some of your time
please contact Jerry Kozak at 215-947-8061.

The Ukrainian American Sports Center “Tryzub”, a not for profit, Charitable organization,
relies on much of its income from charitable donations from its members, friends, as well as
the general community of Philadelphia and its suburbs.

In March, a wine tasting dinner and seminar was planned and attended by 110
members and friends.
In June, Tryzub held its traditional Fathers day Festival, which attracted 385 members
and guests. The entertainment program included many young performers from the
Philadelphia area.
The most significant event was the Ukrainian Independence day Festival that was held
in August, 2007. This year, for the first time in 16 years of this festival, it was held
under rainy conditions. Despite the raindrops for most of the day, 1200 persons
attended this outdoor event. Excellent entertainment program with delicious Ukrainian
Food were enjoyed by all who braved the weather to attend this significant event in the
Delaware Valley.
In October, Tryzub held its first “Oktoberfest”, featuring a dance band and a variety of
ethnic foods and beverages. This event attracted over 200 people. During the event
we also held a beer tasting, featuring many local and international beers. We would
like to thank Tom Milewski from Origlio Beverages for his person support of this event
and the sponsorship of Origlio’s Beverages. There where 10 different beers to taste
and sample. This promises to be another popular event on Tryzub’s calendar. Several
other local Breweries also provided free of charge beers to be used in the sampling
tent.
The final event for 2007 was held in early December, and that was the traditional
Thanksgiving Dinner held at Tryzub for over 25 years. Over 170 persons attended the
event and enjoyed the wonderful and delicious turkey Dinner. Entertainment was also
provided during the event

They come year after year to compete, enjoy camaraderie, and rekindle friendships despite the less

Hrabec 6-3, 6-1. In the semi-finals Sawchak advanced when Jerry Tymkiw, with the score 7-5, 2-0 for
Sawchak, retired due to a hand injury. One of the best matches of the tournament was a semi-final
win of Hrabec over Gene Serba by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the final. Hrabec, who hails
from Massachusetts, in the quarter finals, had another three set win this time against Orest Wasyluk

Al Perlini Classic in Warminster
Western Lehigh Women's in October
Paradise Island, Bahamas in 8/07
We also went to Paradise Island in the Bahamas for the first week of August for training and to play
against the women's teams of the Bahamas Football Association. The 16 girls earned the majority of the
cost of the trip through holding Poker Tournaments at the club, holding a teen dance at the club, candle
sales, food sales, selling ads for the UNI tournament, and a bunch of car washes. The teams we played
were 22 - 28 years old, and we finished with a 2-0-1 record there, with our only tie coming in the last
game where the coach for the U-20 Men's team played for the Bahamian women and scored all their goals!
The highpoint of the trip was the 5-mile beach run, followed by sprints into and out of the ocean. The girls
finished the 5-mile run in a group, with no-one dropping out! We were awarded a "Sportsmanship
Award" by the BFA at the end of the games.
We competed in PAGS 1st Division, and finished with an 8-1-0 record. The 3 top teams in our
division all had the same record; with the team that beat us being beaten by the team we beat in our last
game! Next season we will be petitioning to move up to PAGS Premier division.
This winter we will be competing in both the Leagues United and the EPYSA Indoor Cups. This summer we
will be traveling to Ottawa Canada in early August to compete in the Capital Cup Tournament. We will
also be competing in the Lititz College Showcase, and returning to the Horsham, Warminster and Western
Lehigh tournaments again..
We rostered 20 players this past season (17 primary and 3 secondary); and I am very proud that 2 of the
secondary players will be transferring to Primary status in the next 2 weeks. Both of these players are
former Ukrainian team members (from Dan Nysch's former team) who had left to play with other teams but
have returned to join us.
A personal note, I can't think of a better group of young women to be associated with. Working with these
girls over the past 6 years has been a real pleasure. They have been all that any coach could ask for, and I
am very proud of what they have achieved as a team and as individuals.

U 18 F Ukrainian Nationals Havoc
The U 18 girls HAVOC finished a great career at TRYZUB as
Rock League champs in the Spring of 2007. The girls finished
undefeated except for a game that could not be rescheduled due to
numerous High School graduation parties in June. All but five of the
players graduated from High School this past June. At our Memorial
Weekend tournament the Havoc was the only Ukrainian girls team
to finish as a finalist or champ as they finished behind the champs
from the "Second To None" club located in Central PA.
The girls enjoyed an outstanding career during their time at
TRYZUB the highlights of which included 2 undefeated seasons, 2
indoor championships, a finalist finish at the Loch Lomond
Tournament in Glasgow Scotland and a Champions finish at the
US's largest youth soccer event in Blaine Minnesota at the
Schwann's Cup in 2006, finishing as champs in the U17 travel
team bracket . There were also many other tournament wins over
their career.
None of this would not have been possible without the club's
constant support and the girls will be forever grateful for the
assistance they received in helping them get to Scotland in 2005.
The girls have nothing but great memories from their time at the club
and actually had a home-coming of sorts the Saturday after
Thanksgiving last month as they all gathered to get together and
play for an hour and a-half in some very cold weather.
