The 1800s
Postville Courthouse will
take on old-time mood
An 1800s Craft Fair will
once again be held the final
day of the 2011 Lincoln Art &
Balloon Festival. It will be
held from 10 am to 4 pm at
the State Historic Site,
Postville Courthouse, on Sunday.
Postville Courthouse State
Historic Site is the original
seat of county government in
Logan County, with the current structure a reproduction
of the original courthouse
where Abraham Lincoln practiced law. Volunteers at this
historic site will provide a day
to step back in time and enjoy

crafts and music of an era long
ago.
Crafts that will be demonstrated include rug hooking,
candle dipping, Art of
Phrenology, silk ribbon embroidery, toy making, coopering, chair making and more.
Music and entertainment
will be provided throughout
the day by Chris Vallilo, Mark
Mathewson, Steven Staley and
more. Robert F. Crosby, Project Director of the Looking
for Lincoln Heritage Coalition
will be the featured speaker.
Look for Abe and Mary Todd
to also be greeting visitors.

For veterans
Chamber, Elks team up
The Lincoln/Logan County Chamber of Commerce and the Lincoln Elks
Clubs Veterans Committee this year
teamed up to offer free tethered balloon rides with free admission passes to
veterans for the 2012 Lincoln Art &
Balloon Festival.
For about a year, the chamber of
commerce and the Elk’s Veterans Committee have been working on forging a
partnership to benefit local veterans.
George Lacefield, chairman of the
Elk’s Veterans Committee, initiated
conversations about offering something
special at the Lincoln Art & Balloon
Festival for local veterans last year, but
time was limited to get something together. So, the two organizations decided to continue to work together to offer
something special for the 2012 event.
The Elks Veterans Committee commit-
AUGUST 21, 2012
ted to buying balloon rides for the first
200 veterans interested.
In response to the Elks’ generosity,
the chamber’s board of directors voted
to also donate the admission passes to
the festival, so veterans can have a
great, fun and virtually free weekend.
“It’s just a small way to show our local
veterans how much we appreciate their
service and sacrifice,” said Lacefield.
“We couldn’t pass up this great opportunity to show our appreciation to
our local veterans along with building a
new partnership with the Lincoln Elks,”
said Eric Graue, chairman of the chamber board.
Details on times of rides and a schedule of activities during the weekend can
be found at www.lincolnillinois.com or
by contacting Andi Hake or Jennifer
Lovett at the chamber, 735-2385.

Tournament planned for Saturday
Back by popular demand, a bags
tournament will be held Saturday at
the Logan County Airport during the
Lincoln Art & Balloon Festival.
This will be a double elimination
tournament with a $10 per two-man
team registration fee.
Registration will be held at the beer
garden between noon and 1 p.m., when
the tournament begins in the beer garden.
Prizes will depend on number of
teams playing. All proceeds go to the
Elk’s Veterans Committee, which this
year partnered with the Lincoln/Logan
County Chamber of Commerce to offer
free festival passes and tethered balloon rides to veterans.

39th ANNUAL FINE ART FAIR will be held on Saturday,
August 25, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday, August 26, 10 a.m.–
4 p.m. at Latham Park in downtown Lincoln. Over 78
juried artists from various mediums make this fine art fair
one of Central Illinois’ best. We are proud to offer art of
all mediums. Photography, water colors, ceramic, jewelry,
pottery, mixed mediums, metal work, wood work, and
many more. The newly juried art fair offers something for
everyone. Spend your morning, afternoon, or whole day
visiting the artists and enjoying the beautiful atmosphere.
CHILDREN’S ART FAIR is a place where children can
shop and create artwork while mom, dad, and grandparents
visit the Fine Art Fair. Sponsored by Christian Child Care,
this tent is a safe place for your children to visit and learn
the appreciation for art. This special area, including an art
sale and hands-on art activities, is provided for children
ages 12 & under. Our artists from the fine art fair donate
work so that the children have the opportunity to purchase
art that they enjoy. These art pieces will be marked for
sale at child-friendly prices. Children’s Art Fair hours are
Saturday, August 25, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday, August
26, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity to
introduce your child to the exciting world of art.

Up in Smoke
BBQ rigs will fill downtown square
The field of competitors is quickly filling up for the Up in Smoke on the
Square, a Kansas City Barbeque Society
sanctioned barbecue competition that is
held in conjunction with the Art and
Balloon Festival.
So far 35 teams have entered which
makes Chris Graue, event organizer,
happy to see the quantity and quality of
participants.
"Some of these guys are pit masters
who have been seen competing on television. It raises the level of competition
for those who do this as a hobby," said
Graue.
Mike Wozniak, of team Quau from
Brimfield, Ill., took third place honors at
the 2011 Up in Smoke on the Square for
their pork shoulder entry and were the
Grand Champions at the 2010 Jack
PAGE 20A
Daniels World BBQ Championship says
the secret to doing great barbecue is not
the sauce rather starting with top-notch
meat.
"Each meat is different, most people
think of BBQ as a "low & slow" process,
but most winning cooks cook hot and
fast over wood or charcoal. We do the
same except for our pork roast entry,
which I think benefits from "low &
slow", but chicken, pork, and beef
brisket we cook hot and fast," said Wozniak.
Wozniak, who has competed for the
last 12 years, says he started this hobby
at a rib cook off at the Riverfront in Peoria.
"I like the competitive nature of BBQ.
It just fills that competitive void for me,"
said Wozniak.
Chris Graue, of Lincoln, organizer of the Up in Smoke on the Square Barbecue
competition event works on preparing a variety of meat at his home.

The Art of Wine
Illinois wineries will showcase their products
By Jean Ann Miller
The Courier
A region that many people
associate with fine wine is normally the West Coast, but central and southern Illinois are
also making inroads with several wineries now offering
tasteful, full-bodied flavors.
And some of those can be
found at this year’s Art of Wine
test hosted by Main Street Lincoln during the weekend of the
Art and Balloon Festival in
Lincoln.
Ten Illinois wineries will be
featured at the Art of Wine
AUGUST 21, 2012
tent in downtown Lincoln.
They include: Colliver Family
Winery from Barry, Fox Creek
Winery from Olney, Vahling
Vineyards of Stewardson, Hill
Prairie Winery of Oakford,
Pheasant Hollow Winery of
Whittington, Willett’s Winery
of Manito, Kickapoo Creek
Winery of Edwards, Illinois
River Winery of Utica, Lincoln
Heritage Winery of Cobden
and Berryville Winery of
Claremont.
All vendors are members of
the Illinois Grape Growers and
Vintners Association.
A $10 ticket will buy a com-
plimentary wine glass and six
tickets to sample wines from
any of the 10 Illinois wineries.
Additional tickets will be available for purchase at 50 cents
each. Individual wineries establish the price of a glass of
sample wines. State Bank of
Lincoln is again the sponsor of
the wine glasses that are given
when entering the tent.
Wine sampling will run from
5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and feature the Al & Diane Band from
Peoria playing Sixties to present songs. Saturday hours for
The Art of Wine will be 11:30
a.m. to 10 p.m. and will feature
music from the Cousin Eddie
Band, also from Peoria, playing from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Sunday hours will be 11:30
a.m. to 5 p.m. The featured
music on Sunday will be David
Berchtold and Brian Stear,
who return from last year’s
event playing acoustic guitars
and vocals with harmonica,
mandolin and even grandma’s
ol’ washboard thrown into the
mix. They will play from 1 to 4
p.m.
Lisa LaForge, secretary at
Main Street coordinating the
event, said the Art of Wine
gives attendees the chance to
LINCOLN ART & BALLOON FESTIVAL / THE COURIER
try new tastes of wine.
“People should attend the
Art of Wine because it is a
great place to check out new
wines that you may not have
heard of before. Also, it is a
great place to mingle with
friends and support your local
Main Street Lincoln,” said
LaForge.
This year, the Art of Wine
event is welcoming vendors to
their area. They will introduce
vendors C&C Fudge from Lincoln, Ropp Cheese from Normal and Granite Transformation from Bloomington, all
under the Art of Wine tent.

All about the children
Art fair offers something special for kids
By Jean Ann Miller
The Courier
Children who enjoy the
variety of art featured at
the annual art fair during
the Lincoln Art & Balloon Festival will have
the opportunity to make
art while at the festival.
Coleen Moore, director
of Christian Child Care,
is coordinating the kids’
activities in a tent adjacent to the Lincoln Public Library.
Moore said five handson projects will be offered for children of all
ages to make with a cost
of $5 to participate.
PAGE 28A
“We are repeating favorite activities, such as
found art sculpture making, dot art, beading and
tye-dying. This year we
are bringing two new art
projects. We are doing
finger painting and
“stained glass” balloon
art,” said Moore.
She said the activities
that children will be offered are not only fun but
also have a learning component.
“Christian Child Care
believes hands-on experiences are the best way
for a child to learn. We
focus on the process not
the product. It is amaz-
ing to see what creative
projects a child can make
when allowed to do what
ever they want,” said
Moore.
Creating art teaches
children skills that can
be used during their lifetime.
“Art is important to developing many skills for
young children. Through
art a child increases fine
motor skills, enhances
communication skills,
builds a stronger
social/emotional foundation and teaches a life
long love of creativity,”
said Moore.
Christian Child Care is
is based in an Oddfellows
facility. It serve schildren
6 weeks to 12 years old.
Christian Child Care is
accredited by the National Association of Child
Care Professionals and is
a three-star quality rated
center. It is a member of
the Lincoln/Logan
County Chamber of
Commerce.
The tent will have the
same hours as the art
fair. For more information on the children’s
tent individuals are encouraged to visit the art
fair headquarters tent or
to call Moore at 7325750.
