Dear Colleagues,
I welcome you whole heartedly to the new year of Bombay Orthopaedic Society activities.
It has always been my desire to see BOS as a highly professional organization with sole interest of
propagating Orthopaedics and sustaining the orthopaedic resource of its members.
Hard core academics, ensuring fresher’s and juniors get a platform and guidance to thrive, encouraging
research and confronting medico legal scenario would be areas and the guidelines on which I wish to move
ahead.
WIROC, our flagship conference is supposed to be a highly academic conference with best happening in
Mumbai and around getting showcased.
Strong focus would be to let it remain relevant, vibrant and keep contributing to Orthopaedics and
orthopaedic fraternity of the city and in fact the whole country.
I wish during my tenure as secretary I would be able to contribute to the upkeep and growth of BOS besides
the professional management of day to day activities.

BOS pelviacetabular course is three-day course started in 2011. Over the years, the
course is attracting the delegates from all corners of the country. The course offers a
great academic feast to the delegates and aims at improving knowledge and psychomotor
skills in pelviacetabular fracture surgeries. It includes lectures, video presentations, group
discussion, one to one interaction with faculty members and hands on skill application on
saw bone models and cadavers. Orthopaedic surgeons aspiring to excel in this specialty
get an opportunity to discuss the aspects of management of pelvis and acetabulum
fractures.

Course Highlights
: The course is planned for Orthopaedicians and Radiologists involved in the diagnosis of
musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. It provides a balanced overview of traditional to newest
state of art MSK imaging modalities and techniques. The meeting opens with discussion of
intriguing problem of inflammatory arthritis, its symptoms, signs and investigations.
Imaging of Sacro-iliac arthritis and use of USG in tracking the effectivity of the treatment is
discussed. Next the sports injuries affecting upper and lower limb are discussed by an
orthopaedic surgeon. A detailed discussion of imaging by MRI and USG ensues to be
capped up by arthroscopic pictures to complete the study. Imaging in paediatric skeletal
injuries poses a problem for both the specialties; an orthopaedic surgeon will elaborate the
clinical nuances while a radiologist will bring out imaging fineries. Foot and ankle injuries
form a formidable quantum of patients attending emergency rooms. An orthopaedic
surgeon will enumerate various essential radiological views, their interpretations and
demonstrate those rare injuries that are often overlooked. Ligament injuries disable a
patient but are never seen on radiographs; an USG expert can bring out several injuries and
pathologies for our patients’ benefit. Lastly, with increasing number of women in sports
and uniformed services, pubalgia is a frequently encountered clinical entity; a cognizant
discussion of this condition and its imaging will conclude the DaySchool proceedings. The
faculty consists of experts and leading educators in the field of MSK imaging who will
encourage an open interactive dialogue after each lecture. A take-home CD covering the
course subject matter will be helpful to the participants for after-course self-studies.

specialists understand each other’s capabilities, limitations needs and language. The
course is designed to increase this understanding and cooperation between these two

JESS is a simple technique which is advantageous to many candidates especially those
dealing with basic orthopaedic problems at all levels. It is a viable treatment option for a
patient population which has osteoporotic bones and comminuted fractures. It is
particularly useful to surgeons who work under constraints, especially those in rural
areas. Versatility ranges from its use as a temporary / definitive fixation device in fractures
with soft tissue and vascular injuries to its use in definitive correction of acquired limb
deformities and congenital malformations.

:
We have conducted this course since last 16 years, which has benefitted more than 500
delegates, and the feedback has been good to excellent. Some of the delegates have even
attended this course again after five years to update their knowledge. They have
appreciated the course to the extent that their students and colleagues have attended the
course too. Course material and content addresses common orthopaedic situations which
need flap surgery, wherein after training the delegates themselves can perform routine
flaps without being dependent on plastic surgeons. We have a support of fresh cadavers,
which are prepared in advance. We were able to provide 4 MMC accreditation points for
our one-and-a-half day course last year and we will be able to do our best this year too.

: BOS-Orthopedic Oncology Course is one of the most unique courses which familiarize the
orthopedic surgeon to the most fearsome sub-specialty of orthopedics. The course has
provided a unique platform to create awareness about the latest concepts in the
management of bone and soft tissue tumors, which showcases the multi-disciplinary
management of bone and soft tissue tumors. The course also provides an extensive

This is one of the longest BOS course and very well recognized as “Instructional Course in
Hand Surgery”. The main objectives of this course are to increase awareness amongst
practicing orthopedic surgeons of possibilities of outcome in management of hand and
wrist injuries. This year, we have plans to conduct all sessions of live operative
demonstration during all five days related to upper limb surgeries. There will be a
cadaveric workshop to demonstrate diagnostic wrist arthroscopy, local hand flaps,
compressive neuropathies, brachial plexus exposure, and techniques of tendon/nerve
repair.
At the end of this course, we wish delegates to be well trained in assessing any hand
injury, performing common hand surgeries & to understand which cases needs approach

PAYMENT DETAILS
Ÿ Demand drafts and cheques payable at par in Mumbai in favour of 'Bombay Orthopaedic Society', must reach the BOS
Secretary, by July 15, 2016 for the courses conducted before December 2016, and by November 15, 2016 for the
courses to be conducted thereafter. Outstation cheques and cash are not acceptable. Course fee does not include to

BOS BOOK AWARD
Bombay Orthopaedic Society wishes to encourage academic book writing by Indian Orthopaedic Surgeons. To this
end, it desires to present an award of Rs. 20,000/- (Twenty Thousand Only) to Indian Orthopaedic Surgeons, who have
submitted a book on certain aspects of orthopaedics after 2014.
The details of such a book can be brought to Society’s by any Orthopaedic Surgeon or by the publisher of the book.
The nominations should be made on the personal or company letterhead giving reasons for such recommendations. A
photocopy of the copyright page that shows the history of the Publication like name and address of the publisher, ISBN,
etc of the book should be attached.
The BOS executive committee will peruse all such recommendations and choose an author to whom the award will be
bestowed upon. The BOS reserves its rights not to give any prize or split it in two or more shares, as it may feel proper.
No correspondence will be entertained about this decision. Three copies of the book should be submitted to the
Secretariat. The books will not be returned after its scrutiny for award.

BOMBAY ORTHOPAEDIC SOCIETY BOOK PROJECT
Members have always felt need for a good orthopaedic library. The medical colleges presently have limited resources.
To this end, the society entered an understanding with the Dean, HHSBT Medical College and Cooper Municipal General
Hospital, Juhu to solve this issue. It is proposed that the society will regularly buy books and stock them in the medical
college library. The society members will have access to these books and the college students may also use them. In
the first year of the project, 22 titles have been acquired and are available for reference for the members. In the current
year acquisition of new titles will continue and members’ suggestions and donations are welcome.
Members may volunteer to donate new books to this project. Recent old editions are not acceptable as gifts; however
we welcome very early edition of a ‘classic’; for example first edition of Mercer, 1950 edition of Watson-Jones’ book, or
First edition of AO manual are welcome as a gift. Recently we have acquired from US market, 1954 edition of Bechtol,
Laing and Ferguson’s classic ‘Metals and Engineering in Orthopaedics’.

RESEARCH COMMITTEE
Bombay Orthopaedic Society desires to promote clinical and basic research in orthopaedics; to this effect, Society
wishes to extend monetary support. The Society invites orthopaedic surgeons working in India to approach with
research projects. Projects approved by IRB / Ethics Committee will be preferentially considered for grants. After
vetting, the Society will support the effort. Communications may be directed to Hon. Secretary at the Society’s
office. Research Committee is associated with Biomedical Engineering and Technology Incubation Centre (BETiC)
in IIT Bombay. This is an upcoming IIT project to develop medical / orthopaedic devices, and train human
resources in the process leading to relevant technology transfer / commercialization. Committee will help members
in this field as well.
BOS BEST TREATISE AWARD
An award of Rs. 10,000/- (Indian Rupees Ten Thousand) for a Life Member of the BOS who has done Extensive Original
Research and prepared a Treatise on a Project related to Orthopaedics, that contributes significantly, through its
conclusions, to the practice of Orthopaedics today. Three copies of the treatise including legends, pictures and
references should be submitted. The BOS Executive Committee reserve its right to give, split or withhold this award
based on the applications received. The copies have to be received by August 31, 2016 and may not be returned after
