The idea to extend the city’s existing ban on recording council or
committee meetings — which does
not apply to members of the “official” media — to also include public
consultation meetings came under
consideration after a recent meeting attendee with a video camera
made some people uncomfortable.

on civil liberties.”

Park Renovation Budget Soars

SASKATOON, SK — It looks like
more money is needed to complete the ongoing restoration and
landscaping project in the city’s
Cosmopolitan Park.
Located across the river from
Kiwanis Memorial Park and just
south of the University Bridge, the
Cosmo Park includes such features
as a lookout point with interpretive signs describing the historical
growth of Saskatoon’s downtown,
an upper paved trail and lower
slightly more rugged trail for hiking.
Restoration work began in the
park in April of this year, and includes an off-ramp to Saskatchewan
Crescent, re-vegetation, wheelchair
accessibility ramps, stairs to the
Meewasin Trail and new benches.
This project was budgeted at
approximately $1.4 million and was
to have been completed by midOctober, but another $180,000 is
required to complete the project by
the end of the construction season

Previous cost increases totalled
$400,000, bringing the project’s
final tally to about $2 million.

says a new Duke University study.
Researchers quantified the full
cost of obesity by considering productivity losses due to health issues,
absence from work and medical
expenditures and arrived at a final
figure of $73.1 billion per year.
“Now that we’ve uncovered this
sort of hidden cost, I think that it ups
the ante for [employers] to think
harder about what sort of interventions they want to implement,” says
study author Eric Finkelstein.
The costs to companies increase
with the level of a worker’s obesity, reaching a high of $16,900
for women who are at least 100
pounds overweight and $15,500 for
men in the same body mass index
category, the researchers said.

Pallett Takes Accomplished Solo Act To Amigos

Music Prize winning artist formerly
known as Final Fantasy brings his
fiercely original Heartland tour to
Amigos October 27th.
Owen Pallett is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, vocalist and
Arcade Fire alum, and earlier this
year dropped what might be the
most interesting record of 2010,
Heartland.
Just don’t go looking for a conversation about the album’s ‘narrative’.
“It’s not meant to be talked
about! It’s been written off as a
concept album but I try to keep
conceptual elements in the dark,”
says Pallett.
“When making this — as a listening experience — I was hoping
that it would be like sticking your
head into a different world with
unfamiliar sounds and that it would
be an adventure.”
Recorded over nine months,
Pallett enlisted the services of the
Czech Philharmonic in Prague and
travelled to Reykjavik to use Valgeir
Sigurðsson’s Greenhouse studio,
home to such sonically widescreen

Meagen Thomas: What has the
last year been like for The Trews?
John-Angus MacDonald: It was
supposed to be a year off but ended
up being real busy. We traveled as
far as [Tokyo], Dubai and Iqaluit,
our bass payer Jack had a baby and
somewhere in there we found time
to write and record a new album.
So not much of a year off!
MT: Why did you go acoustic with
Friends and Total Strangers?
J-A M: The purpose was twofold. One was to expose our Canadian fans to that side of the band
— we’d been jamming acoustically
since our inception but it’s never
really been exposed — and the second reason was to figure out what
we wanted the next record to be.
It gave our ears a break, let us air
out some older tunes as well as
provided us with new inspiration.
MT: What’s the story behind Highway of Heroes?
J-A M: Highway of Heroes was
inspired by the story of Nichola
Goddard [the first female Canadian
soldier killed in combat in Afghanistan, who] went to high school with
us. We started playing it on our
acoustic tour, very quickly it become one of [our] most requested
songs [and] we decided we would
make it a single. [As] an appropriate
charity, the Hero Fund was a perfect fit; they help families of fallen
soldiers through education grants.
MT: Three of four members are
close relations. What family dynamics are at work during the creative
process, and is Jack family now too?
J-A M: I’ve known Jack as long
as I’ve known Sean; our parents
are old friends and we grew up
together. I think the tightness of
the relationship shines through in
all departments.
MT: What can fans expect to hear
on your new album in 2011?
J-A M: I feel like the next album
is a nice organic blend of our acoustic side and our heavy side. It was
recorded over six week-long sessions at the Tragically Hip’s Bath,
Ontario studio, which is a great
place to make a record. I feel like
the vibe of that place seeps in to
every record made there. Everything was preformed live, and as a
result I feel like the true flavor of the
band really shines through. I can’t

Jack Goes Boating — opening soon at the Roxy Theatre —
doesn’t exactly sail away with
audiences’ unbridled affection,
but it manages not to sink either.
The subdued directorial debut of Oscar-winning actor Philip
Seymour Hoffman (Best Actor for
2006’s Capote), is an intimate and
unusual character-driven comedy
about a fledgling romance between
two blue-collar New Yorkers.
Hoffman stars as a shy, inarticulate, unkempt, anxiety-prone limousine driver that finds his female
equivalent in Connie (played by
Amy Ryan), a woman who is justifiably paranoid about new relationships after several bad experiences
with liberty-taking men.
Jack and Connie get to know
each other slowly and carefully —
he respectful of her fears, she wary
but hopeful when she senses his
gentleness and sensitivity.
When Connie casually mentions
that she would like to go boating
in Central Park, Jack — who cannot
swim — immediately starts taking
swimming lessons at the local pool
in case the worst happens.
Jack also volunteers to cook
a special meal for Connie when
she mentions that no one but her
mother has ever done that for her,
leading to his taking cooking lessons from the head pastry chef at
the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. However,
Jack soon learns that his culinary
tutor is a threatening source of
jealously and discomfort in the
marriage of his two best friends
Clyde and Lucy (John Ortiz and
Daphne Rubin-Vega).
As an adaptation of an offBroadway play, the stage origins of
the piece are obvious throughout,
which serves as both a strength
and weakness. But it is also gratifyingly nuanced — offering telling
verbal and behavioral details that
help bring the four characters, their
relationships and their ordinary,

slice-of-working-class lives to recognizable life.
Both Hoffman and his actors
deliver, none more so than the appealing Ryan, whose empathetic
Connie not only seems genuine
in every way but who commands
maximum attention with minimum
gesticulation.
Little movies this heartfelt and
skilled and idiosyncratic, that travel
their own road and don’t resort
to easy thrills or laughs or shocks,
deserve an audience.
A likable kitchen-sink romantic comedy, Jack Goes Boating is
a four-hander that celebrates the
“little people” — finding beauty and
strength in the awkward interactions of everyday life.
