WELCOME BACK...
Good evening and welcome to Noel-Baker, the home of the Trailblazers,
where London United – Harefield Academy are the visitors for our
penultimate home game of the regular season. We welcome their
players, coaching staff and supporters to Derby for tonight’s game.
I don’t know about you, but I just don’t want this season to end. It’s
been so much fun to watch the team playing great basketball with such
passion, but in such a clean and professional manner. Let’s hope that
this great bunch of players see their efforts being rewarded with the
success they deserve both in the final weeks of the regular season and
of court in the play-offs.
Last weekend saw our men travel to Mansfield and pull off a 42-79 away
win against an injury ravaged Giants side. While that was happening,
Huddersfield managed an away win at Eastside, but they came unstuck
the following day, as they lost 83-79 at Brixton, despite a tremendous
fourth quarter fight back.
Our win combined with the Heat’s defeat means the title race swung
back in our favour, as three wins from our final three games will make us
champions. However, it’s important to keep focussed and concentrate
on each game as it comes.
The home games against London United and Derbyshire Arrows will be
hard enough, before we even think about the trip to Brixton tomorrow.
That game will be immensely tough as the Topcats are unbeaten at home
this season and are still very much in the promotion hunt themselves.

A three-pointer from Watts completed a 15-11 run which
left Derby 22-15 ahead at the end of the first quarter.
Worcester’s biggest threat through that first quarter came
through Dave Eden, who scored ten of their opening 15
points, after missing just one of his six attempts. It was
clear the Trailblazers needed to limit his opportunities and
they did just that, holding their former team-mate to just
seven additional points in the remaining three quarters.

much more productive with the ball than Worcester could

The run was concluded by two of the club’s rising stars as
Sam Turner found Jake Wesselingh for his first points of
the night. From 94-65 up, Derby’s quintet of bench players
did allow Worcester to score the game’s final seven points,
but that was largely irrelevant as the important business
of the night had already been taken care of.
All in all, it was another solid performance which meant
the title race between the Trailblazers and Huddersfield
remains very much alive.
The game’s other big highlight was a 100% shooting
performance from Owusu-Ansah, who made three of
three from the field and the same from the free-throw
line. The Trailblazers rebounding was once again strong,
as they collected 47 boards to the visitors 33. With ten

As Derby tightened their defensive attention around
Eden, former England junior Harry Turner stepped up to
score his side’s first 11 points in the second period. His
efforts helped Worcester cut the gap to 30-26 midway
through the second. However, Dorr hit six of the points in
a 12-0 burst which left the Trailblazers leading 42-26.
Derby Trailblazers may have been a little slow out of the
starting blocks against Worcester Wolves, but there was
nothing to fear as once they got going, there was plenty
of stylish and skillful basketball on show. And it wasn’t just
the senior men’s team who were in good form as every
Trailblazers team that stepped out onto court over the
weekend went on to win their match in a rare 100% clean
sweep.
As the D2 Men continued their push for promotion,
Alex Dorr led the way with 26 points, 18 rebounds and 5
assists, while John Gould made eight of eleven shots on
his way to 18 points and Dan Watts provided 17 points, 11
boards and 5 assists.
Meanwhile, on a difficult shooting night for Sam O’Shea,
the Trailblazers captain simply found a different way to
contribute, by dishing off a personal best haul of 7 assists
to go with his 12 points and 8 rebounds.
Both teams were a little sluggish in the opening stages
of the game, so much so that when Derby called time
out after just under six minutes the score was only 7-4 in
the Blazers favour. Dorr had opened proceedings with a
quick three-pointer, but the two teams missed numerous
early shooting opportunities before a Derby time-out had
something of an impact.
Derby made several substitutions, but it was the
introduction of Gould which had the biggest impact.
After missing his opening attempt from long range, he
then hit the Trailblazers next eight points, striking twice
from downtown and once after a drive inside to the hoop.

The run was halted when Eden made one of two freethrows after being fouled by Denholm, a shot which was
followed up by a three-pointer from Watts forty seconds
before the break. Both sides then turned the ball over,
before a basket from Eden made it 45-31 at half-time.
Derby started the third period with sweet drive to the
hoop from Lamar Morrison, before Alex Anderson scored
from outside and then completed a three-point play for
the Wolves to trim the gap to just ten points. However,
the Trailblazers responded with one of their best periods
of the game as they hit nine straight points, prompting a
Worcester time-out.
The Wolves got the response they were looking for as
Turner drove inside, but JoJo Owusu-Ansah immediately
bettered their score with a lay-up from which he scored
both the basket and a bonus free-throw. Turner then
converted from downtown, only for O’Shea to complete
a three-point play for Derby, giving them a twenty-point
lead.
Over the remaining three minutes of the third, Wolves
had the slight advantage, knocking down a series of
three-pointers to go into the final period trailing 70-55.
The visitors then stated the fourth with a 6-2 run, but
there was never any need for concern, as the Trailblazers
were about to embark on a 22-6 charge which left them
leading 92-65 with three minutes remaining.
Within that final run, O’Shea provided a string of assists
including three on successive possessions, while
Morrison, Dorr and Kayne King kept the momentum
going with a series of steals. Gould and Dorr were the

Congratulations to Sam Turner
Sam Turner was the stand out player for the Derby Trailblazers
Academy team, as they secured a hard fought 82-64 win over
All Saints from Sheffield. The 6’8” forward finished the game
with 22 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and a block in a
performance which drew high praise from Coach Matt Shaw:
“He was excellent at both ends of the court. We wanted to
get the ball inside to him as much as possible but struggled
to do so at times. He did a superb job of getting on the glass
and making things happen and he got a lot of scores near the
basket,” he said.
Indeed Turner was 10/13 from the field with all his scores
coming in the paint. In a game of many runs, Derby netted the
final 15 points of the game, but it was ultimately that final burst
that proved the difference as Trailblazers won the final period
28-10.
Early on Derby had sprung out to a 9-0 lead which soon
became 20-10 as King and Turner combine for 15 of Derby’s
early points. The Yorkshire outfit refused to go away though
and a Gordon three pointer just before half reduced the deficit
to a single point at 31-30.
The third quarter followed a
similar pattern; Derby opened
a lead while All Saints were
again chasing them down.

All Saints again ended the
quarter strongly with back
to back threes including an
acrobatic buzzer beater from
Brownell to tie the game up
at 54 apiece.
A Gordon three pointer for
All Saints opened the final
period to give them their
first lead of the contest. However, Derby came bouncing back,
Captain Jessup netted all of his seven points in the final quarter
to go along with Sam Turner’s eight as the Derby boys finally
got into their scoring stride while preventing Sheffield scoring
for the final four minutes.
Derby went 13 from 20 from the field in the last quarter to help
keep their slim chances of the EABL All Midlands title alive.
Derby moves to 6-2 in conference play while All Saints drop to
5-5. Kayne King had 20 points while Ricardo Guddemi had 14,
while All Saint’s Brownell was the game’s leading scorer with 27
and Gordon added 15.
Division Two play-offs
For those of you who aren’t familiar with what
happens at the end of the regular season, the top
eight clubs will compete in the play-offs, which are
effectively an extra cup competition. Unlike
football, they do not have any bearing on which
sides gain promotion.
The draw is weighted, so the clubs which finish higher
in the final table receive home draws for the quarter
final and semi-final rounds. The final is then played as
part of England Basketball’s Championship Final Fours
Weekend in Manchester.
In the quarter finals, the champions play the eighth
placed teams, then it’s 2nd v 7th, 3rd v 6th and 4th v
5th. The dates for games are as follows:

Tonight’s Match Preview
We welcome London United to Noel-Baker tonight for
the third and final meeting between the two clubs this
season. The Trailblazers have already completed a 116-43
win the Pool Stage of the Patron’s Cup and a 69-104
away win in the league.
It’s fair to say LU have an interesting history. Run by Jack
Majewski, the club somewhat surprisingly bought the
BBL franchise Surrey Heat over the summer and went on
to rename the club Surrey United. Rather than merging
the BBL team with his existing EBL side, Majewski opted
to keep both teams operating side by side, with the EBL
team operating as a feeder club to the BBL side.
It’s not the first time the 47 year old Polish born coach
has been involved with the BBL. London United actually
played in the professional league in 2006/07, but
financial problems forced them to withdraw less than
two weeks before the start of the second season. They
subsequently rejoined the EBL, earning promotion to
division two in time for the 2010/11 season.
Majewski controversially stated that he wanted to have
a fully fluid rotation of players between the BBL and EBL
squads, but current rules state that nine players must
be registered solely within the BBL, with the other three
places are only allowed to play 50% of games in either
the BBL or EBL, before deciding which team they will
represent for the remainder of the season. The Polish
play-caller challenged that ruling, but the Governing
body has actually tightened the rules ahead of next
season, rather than relaxing them, as Majewski wanted.
It means that next season, any club such as Surrey/LU or
indeed Derby which fields two or more senior teams in
any BBL or EBL Competition (the “Principal” team and a
“Nursery” team), must licence all senior players for one
team exclusively, with no movement permitted between
the teams except where a formal transfer occurs.
The only exception to this will be for registered U20
players who are to the Nursery team, who may be listed
on the score sheet for the Principal team at any point
during the season. There is no limit or restriction on
the number of games an Under 20 player can play up,
although players who are licensed for the Principal team
will not be permitted to play down for the Nursery team.
Derby’s Assistant Coach Steve Baxter says tonight’s
game is the first of three very important games for the
Trailblazers:
“We have reached the stage of the season where every
game is like a Cup Final. This weekend we have two such
games. It’s important we stay fully focussed on each
game and take matters one game at a time. London
United – Harefield Academy are a difficult team to
prepare for as they have a somewhat fluid roster. They
are likely to bring a strong side to Noel-Baker and we
will need to be on our guard against Elvisi Dusha in
particular. He has the ability to shoot the ball well and
cause problems.
“Reuben Tatham-Nunn is another great young prospect
who has done particularly well in the Elite Academy
Basketball League, where he was recently named player
of the week, after helping his team come back from
25 points down to beat Ivybridge Community College
73-72. He had 23 points and 7 assists, which included a
huge three-pointer and the game winning lay-up in the
dying seconds. We will therefore have to make sure we
guard him closely,” he said.

Trailblazers crush injury hit Mansfield
and move two steps closer to title

Daukas responded with a lay-up before Derby hit the next
thirteen points without reply, forcing a further Mansfield
time-out.
The run included six more points for O’Shea, a triple for
Allaway and a steal and a lay-up for Jo Jo Owusu-Ansah
and took Derby to 57-26 ahead. Mansfield stopped the
run with back to back scores, only for Owusu-Ansah and
Gould to knock down a pair of three-pointers either side
of a basket from Woodhouse.
Derby were 63-32 up going into the final quarter and
Coach Maudsley used the period to give valuable minutes
to King and fellow youngsters Sam Turner and Mitch
Nelson, all of whom impressed, as did Richard Bailey, who
netted three of four from the line.

free-throws while Nelson blocked a shot and provided the
The race for the division two league title swung
dramatically back in Derby’s favour last weekend, as
not only did Derby produce a 42-79 away victory over
Mansfield Giants, but they also saw their closest rivals
for the title – Huddersfield Heat – beaten 83-79 after
overtime away to Brixton Topcats.
Those two results means Derby now have their destiny back
in their own hands as all they have to do to be crowned
champions is to win their final three games of the regular
season. However, one of those three remaining fixtures
is away to Brixton, who demonstrated their ability by
defeating Huddersfield on Sunday and who also still have
a chance of clinching either first or second place, meaning
there is no room for complacency whatsoever.
Saturday’s emphatic win over Mansfield was particularly
pleasing, as it went a long way towards avenging the
embarrassing 69-73 defeat suffered at the hands of
the Giants at the end of November. That win remains
Mansfield’s only league success this season and if the
Trailblazers were to miss out on the league title or
indeed promotion, that result would surely be seen as a
significant factor.
Derby began the match with a barrage of three-pointers,
which accounted for fifteen of their twenty-one first
quarter points. Alex Dorr was first to strike; he then found
Lamar Morrison for a two before Watts supplied Allaway
with his first triple of the night. Sam O’Shea then powered
to the hoop before Allaway struck again from outside the
arc to make it 13-4 after six minutes.
Mansfield added the next four points after Morrison
fouled to send RB Clyburn to the line after which Parish
Xavier also scored. Dorr then scored off his own offensive
rebound while Derby went on to add two more threepointers before the first buzzer as Kayne King twice found

The first quarter was a particularly unhappy one for
former Derby centre Mark Woodhouse, who missed three
baskets and could only manage one of two at the line.
The big man’s night briefly improved as he added five
points in the second quarter, but anyone who knows how
competitive a player ‘Woody’ is will know how unhappy
he would have been to finish with only eight points and
five rebounds.

It was a match which Derby dominated from start to
finish. They virtually outscored the home team by a
margin of 2:1; their shooting percentages were much
higher than the Giants; they won the battle of the boards
49 to 39 and they dished off an incredible 26 assists to
go with the 31 baskets they scored. It was an altogether
impressive performance from a side who clearly also had
plenty in reserve should they have needed it.

The second quarter opened with a monstrous slam dunk
from Clyburn, who moments later was fouled by O’Shea
and sank both shots to cut the gap to five points, but
Derby responded with six straight points at the start of a
15-2 run. Morrison helped get that run underway, firstly
dishing off to Allaway and then stealing the ball straight
back and giving it Dorr for an easy basket.
Dorr added another two before O’Shea had six points,
interspersed by a three-pointer from Allaway to extend
the lead to 36-18. Lewis Tucker ended the run with a
three-pointer for Mansfield, prompting a Derby time-out
with 4’28” on the clock.
The remainder of the second period was something of
a comedy of errors by both sides and by the time the
Trailblazers called another time-out with 47 seconds left
before the break, a solitary free-throw from Woodhouse
had been the only thing to trouble the scorers. Another
Derby turnover followed, before Woodhouse scored to
make it 36-24 to the Blazers at the break.
To watch the Blazers at the start of the third period was an
absolute delight. O’Shea opened the scoring courtesy of
an assist from Morrison, who then stole the ball and fed
Dan Watts for his only score of the night. That wasn’t to
say Watts had a poor game. Far from it, as he pulled down
11 rebounds, dished off seven assists and produced three
huge blocks.
Giants called an early time-out, but it had little effect as
Dorr provided assists for O’Shea and Morrison. Antonas

It has reached that stage of the calendar
where sadly some of our team’s seasons
are now over, but several of those teams
have made some tremendous striders
within the last few months. Ahead of a
full focus on the development teams in
the next couple of match programmes,

(although they actually face the same
club on the road tomorrow – Ed). The
game could affect the final standing of
the team for the play-offs, however more
importantly it is the final home game for
the four senior players on the team:

every played.”
