Where were you on 9/11/01?
Most Americans vividly remember where
they were on that day the world changed, but it was far from
the first time America faced terror and enemies operating within our borders.
The United States has been threatened by domestic terrorists and foreign agents,
Beginning April 3rd,
experience these events
through historic
photographs, themed
environments, interactive
displays, films, video,
artifacts – and much more.
With support from:
militant radicals and saboteurs, traitors and spies, ever since our founding. The
A Creation of
Enemy Within: Terror in America offers an unprecedented look at this history, from
Revolutionary times to slavery and westward expansion, through the war years to
communism, from the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal Building to the tragedies
of 9/11, exposing hate, radicalism, extremism and terrorism and exploring the delicate
balance between national security and civil liberties.

A rose is still a rose, but
many words have more
ambiguous meanings.
Bad can mean good,
and a blackberry is
now more than a fruit.
Each year, the MerriamWebster dictionary
adds words that have entered common
usage - these include dwarf planet, sudoku,
prosecco and subprime. Language dates
us, creates perceptions, evokes emotions.
Holiday happenings
Take center stage at the Maltz Museum
For the second year, the Museum was open for Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day and Presidents' Day, with tours, musical performances and dramatic
re-enactments.
One word that isn’t ambiguous is hate.
Like yelling fire in a crowded theater, you
don’t throw the word hate around lightly.
We used it very deliberately when naming
Stop The Hate! Youth Speak Out. It
was meant to elicit strong opinions and
it did, becoming catalyst for an explosion
of sentiment, insight and ideas from
1,200 students across seven counties in
Northeast Ohio. Every one of them is
a winner, and you can see each of their
names at www.maltzjewishmuseum.org,
even as you read about the finalists and
winner of the life-changing $100,000
scholarship.
Hate is central to The Enemy Within:
Terror in America (cover story). Focusing
on terror and the lessons of the past, we
help visitors learn about the forces that
feed hate and terror and move past them,
to build tolerance and understanding
central to our Museum’s mission.
AMERICA IS FREE AND SO ARE WE!
FREE SATURDAYS THROUGH MAY.
March madness has hit and will last all the
way through May as the Maltz Museum
opens free to the public on Saturdays,
12-5 pm. Whether Saturday is your day to
run errands, spend time with family or just
relax, make the Museum one of your
regular stops. With so many people having
a hard time right now, we want everyone
to be able to enjoy an afternoon of
entertainment, enjoyment and learning.
The Museum remains free to members all the time.
Free Saturday admission applies to individual visits only,
not to group tours.

ZAP! POW! BAM!: The Superhero opened up a perfect opportunity
for 65 fourth-grade families from The Temple-Tifereth Israel to see how
the comic book creators modeled the heroic characteristics expressed
in the Torah. Mark Davidson, Manager of School and Family Programs
collaborated with Iree Riech, a Family Educator at The Temple to
create Chanukah: A Celebration of
Heroes as a special Sunday morning
event, held jointly at the Museum
and the synagogue. Through textbased learning tours, families gained
a greater understanding of heroism
as seen in the Hanukkah holiday.
Masked superheroes descended on the Maltz Museum for
the first-ever Cool Cleveland Kids Party. Melissa, Bradley
and Lilly Rothschild came dressed for the costume parade
and contest. Lilly (back row) took home Runner Up honors!
