Dear friends,
Thank you for all you have done to make the last year one of the most extraordinary in our history.
In 2014, the effort and energy that went into creating the new Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and
Eskenazi Health campus continued to send a powerful message to our community. We experienced the
very dream you helped us cast, and it was as fulfilling as it was inspiring. We could not be more grateful.
In 2014, the modern health care technology and welcoming space we envisioned through blueprints
and computer renderings came to life with physicians, nurses and staff engaging in lifesaving and life
changing care. The music and art we imagined in corridors, patient rooms and great open spaces came
to life. Concerts, musical performances and works of art now considered among the finest in American
hospitals filled the spaces of Eskenazi Health and continue to fill the hearts and imaginations of our
patients, staff, physicians and community. The architecture we saw rising from the earth for four
years began to fulfill its true role: guiding patients and staff, and creating and supporting journeys to
better health. The gardens and natural environments saw their first flowers and produce, providing
nourishment for the body, mind and spirit.
Over the last year, we brought to a close the Eskenazi Health Campaign, which was a truly remarkable
reflection of what our community can achieve when we come together. The campaign produced one
of the largest single contributions ever to a public hospital, the largest single contribution ever by a
financial institution in the state of Indiana, and one of the largest employee-giving campaigns in health
care. As moving as the milestones were, we are equally inspired by the vastness of the campaign — more
than 3,500 contributors — and by the enthusiasm we continue to see as we look beyond building a new
hospital, into new challenges and opportunities to improve the health of our community.
Our gratitude for your support runs through the new Eskenazi Health campus. And as we brought the
year 2014 to a close, we also began diligent work to formulate a strategic vision for the future of the
Eskenazi Health Foundation, one that we will be sharing with you in 2015 and beyond.
We will forever be grateful to you and look forward to having an even greater impact on health care in
Central Indiana in the years to come.

an extraordinary collective contribution led by our foremost supporters,
Sidney and Lois Eskenazi, and many more across the philanthropic

For Eskenazi Health and Eskenazi Health Foundation supporters, 2014 was the year all of our dreams became a
living, breathing reality. The Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and Eskenazi Health campus’ first full year of operation
brought remarkable achievements in quality care for our patients and community. It also featured the magnificent
art, music and gardens we envisioned, which elicited community connectedness and engagement. And as we
embraced the realization of this dream and saw the impact of your support on the health of our community, it
inspired us to cast our vision for the future with even more ambition.

The foremost purpose of the
Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital
and Eskenazi Health campus is to
care for patients. In 2014, we saw
Eskenazi Health fulfill its mission,
delivering on its promise to be a
facility that works with physicians,
nurses, mental health and social
services to achieve more.
The integration of mental health
care and well-being, embodied
by the Kathi & Bob Postlethwait
Mental Health Recovery Center,
brought our patients a new
approach and level of service, led
by Margie Payne, RN, CNS, MSN,
chief executive officer of Eskenazi
Health Midtown Community
Mental Health, whose efforts were
recognized by the National Alliance
on Mental Illness.
The Michael & Susan Smith
Emergency Department and
Smith Level I Shock Trauma
Center came to life, leading not
only to advances in medical care,

but also fostering knowledge and
education. Last year, it served as
host of the 21st Annual Trauma &
Surgical Critical Care Symposium.
Cherri Hobgood, M.D., chair of
emergency medicine for the IU
School of Medicine and member of
the Eskenazi Health Foundation
Board of Directors, along with
Charles Miramonti, M.D., medical
director of the Michael and Susan
Smith Emergency Department and
chief of Indianapolis Emergency
Medical Services, managed one of
the busiest emergency departments
in the state while simultaneously
focusing on emergency medicine
and medical education.
Eskenazi Health’s nursing staff,
led by chief nursing officer Lee
Ann Blue, RN, MSN, thrived in
the new facilities, using the latest
technologies to best serve patients
while also preventing injury to
themselves with the new patient
lifts in each room. Physicians
also prospered. Malaz Boustani,
M.D., propelled Eskenazi Health’s
already ambitious and exciting
efforts in Alzheimer’s disease and
dementia by casting a new vision
for further excellence in brain care.
And in the Richard M. Fairbanks
Burn Center, Rajiv Sood, M.D., led
efforts to pioneer a remarkable new
laser skin technology that mitigates
the redness of burn scarring, the
first in the Midwest and third
in the nation to undertake this
endeavor. This amazing technology
was made possible through the
generosity of Sandy Eskenazi.

THE FACILITIES AND

The deepest fulfillment of 2014 came in
seeing improvements to the health of
patients and our community. Eskenazi
Health’s commitment to care proved so
remarkable that outside groups recognized
it with numerous awards and honors.
The Coalition of Architectural Design
named the 12,000-square-foot art on the
Eskenazi Health parking garage as the
best piece of art at any hospital in America.
“May/September” by artist Rob Ley is the
largest outdoor art form in Indiana. Sidney
& Lois Eskenazi Hospital was featured
in Healthcare Design and Landscape
Architecture magazines. The Arts Council
of Indianapolis honored Eskenazi Health
with its ARTI Award for the artful impact
of its new campus and The Commonground;
and the Indy Chamber presented Eskenazi
Health with the Monumental Award for
architectural excellence and community
mindedness, while also recognizing
Eskenazi Health Community Health Center
West 38th Street.

ESKENAZI HEALTH AND ITS LEADERS WERE ALSO HONORED:
• Eskenazi Health was named Top Performer on
key quality measures by The Joint Commission.
• The Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and
Eskenazi Health campus was honored by Top
Notch of Indiana with the Top Notch Legacy
Project Award.
• Eskenazi Health was the recipient of the 2014
Employer Award during the Access and Inclusion
Awards Ceremony on July 30 by the Mayor’s
Advisory Council on Disability for its Eskenazi
Health Initiative for Empowerment and Economic
Independence program, a paid internship program
• Lisa Harris, M.D., chief executive officer at
Eskenazi Health, was named a 2014 Torchbearer
by the Indiana Commission for Women and was
named a 2014 Touchstone Award winner by Girls
Inc. Indianapolis for her community achievement
and leadership.
• Jennifer Kitchens, MSN, RN, ACNS, BC, CVRN, a
clinical nurse specialist (CNS) at Eskenazi Health,
was awarded the National Association of Clinical
Nurse Specialists (NACNS) Clinical Nurse
Specialist Preceptor of the Year Award.
• Palmer MacKie, M.D., director of the Eskenazi
for college students with disabilities aimed at
Health Integrative Pain Program, received an
preparing them for careers in diverse fields.
Indiana Public Health Achievement Award in the
