Beijing
Beijing, the political and cultural capital of China, is where China’s most stunning and essential sights are to be found. Now a
modern 21st century city, Beijing remains steeped in culture and heritage. Towering skyscrapers and vast shopping malls are
juxtaposed with the grand buildings and broad boulevards of the last century, as well as fast-disappearing hutong lanes born
of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Beyond this modern vitality, Beijing is blessed with myriad attractions, providing visitors with
an unforgettable glimpse of the city’s history.
Neighbourhood
Beyond the city, excursions to its interesting hinterland add some cultural
spice to the Beijing experience. A side trip to Tianjin takes visitors to one of the
largest Zen temples in China while Chengde is home to a renowned UNESCO
World Heritage Site, an 18th century imperial resort area where the remnants of
the most expansive regal gardens in China can be found. Further east, the
Ming dynasty garrison town of Shanhaiguan marks the spot where the Great
Wall meets the sea.

Discovering Beijing on foot can be a rewarding experience. The city is striped
with wide tree-lined boulevards and highways with myriad small alleyways
feeding off them. The flat terrain makes walking easy although the sprawling

virtually every major thoroughfare in Beijing having its own bicycle lane,
cycling tours make for an excellent alternative in exploring the city’s finest
monuments as well as the interesting spots off the beaten track.
Shopping

shopping spots are the Yansha Shopping Mall, Tiananmen Square and

Guangzhou
As a key transportation hub and trading port in China with a history of over 2,200 years, Guangzhou is the capital of
Guangdong Province and one of the five National Central Cities. The city is renowned as a “Gourmet Paradise”, offering a marvellous variety of international delights and, in particular, authentic Cantonese dishes that are famous for specific
cooking techniques, natural flavours and delicate textures. One is considered not to have visited Guangzhou if one has not
tried the typical morning tea, or locally known as “Yum Cha”. So, ready your chopsticks!
Neighbourhood
Situated adjacent to both Special Administrative Regions of Macao and the
international transport hub Hong Kong, Guangzhou allows easy access to
nearby attractions as well as many major cities. You may hop on a bullet train
and get to China’s first Special Economic Zone Shenzhen in 40 minutes, or on a
coach and get a relaxing soak in natural Conghua hot springs within an hour,
savour a bite of crispy squab in Zhongshan, or enjoy panoramic ocean views in
Zhuhai by the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Railway.
Local Attractions
Guangzhou is also named the “Goat City”. Legend has it that five celestials
brought five goats carrying ears of rice to the city, to make sure the place
would always be free of famine. The locals later paid tribute to the goats by
making them the symbol of the city, hence the name. The Statue of the Five
Goats is located in Yuexiu Park, together with the 600-year-old Zhenhai Tower.
With a total height of 600 metres, the Canton Tower is the tallest TV tower in
China and guests are invited to take a ride in see-through capsules that perch
on top of the tower at 450 metres high. Not a fan of heights? Pay a visit to the
Chimelong Safari Park, home to 20,000 animals including rare and
endangered ones such as pandas, koalas, white tigers, meerkats and Thai
elephants. When night falls, the city’s vivacious side comes to live in flashing
lights of neon. Take a two-hour cruise trip along the Pearl River adorned by
historical sites and unique architectures featuring the Haizhu Bridge, White Swan Lake, Ersha Island, Shamian Island and many more.

The Guangdong Museum showcases an array of unseen treasures within,
consisting of four large exhibition halls with a collection of over 160,000
exhibits. The most notable of these is the paleontology exhibit, host to an army
of prehistoric dinosaur bones, from the wacky-looking Stegosaurus to
everyone’s favourite, Tyrannosaurus Rex. Besides, it is worth the trip just to see
the building’s famed ‘jewellery box’ design. The Zhujiang-InBev International
Beer Museum, the biggest beer-themed museum in south China, demonstrates
the beer-making procedure and history of beer as you savour a mug of freshly
brewed ale. Redtory creates a sanctuary where modern art blends with postindustrial transformation, offering wide boulevards lined with bronze statues
and sculpture pieces that grant access to free exhibition halls. Western Han
Nanyue King Museum is well known for its well-preserved tomb and funerary
antiquity from the Han Dynasty. The tomb has yielded more than 1,000 burial
artefacts, a chariot, gold and silver vessels, musical instruments and human
sacrifices. The owner of the tomb is Zhao Mo, the second king of Nanyue (137 BC – 122 BC).
Walks
The hotel is just a stone’s throw away from the Pearl River. Why not start by
taking a stroll along it? With a soft breeze caressing, you will soon reach Party
Pier, the place to go for a good night out. Too early to drink? Keep walking, cross
the Liede Bridge and arrive at the Zhujiang New Town on the other side of the
River. This area houses a host of sites such as Canton Tower, Twin Towers,
Guangzhou Opera House, Guangdong Museum, Guangzhou Library, the
Second Children’s Palace and Haixinsha Island — the venue for the 16th Asian
Games opening and closing ceremony.
Shopping
Guangzhou offers abundant shopping options from high-end shopping malls to bargain basements in back alleys. For handicrafts, the 800-metre
Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street is highly recommended. For high-quality toys,
garments, snacks, freshly caught seafood or even dried Chinese herbs at low
prices, there are a number of wholesale markets as if all factories in China have
set up store fronts. For the latest fashions, the mall in TaiKoo Hui is worth
mentioning. With a total floor area of 138,000 sq m, it is home to over 180
acclaimed brands, including some of the world’s biggest names such as Louis
Vuitton, Chanel, Prada and Hermès.

Shanghai’s location on the east coast of China allows easy access to various
cities that hold special importance in the country’s history and culture. A mere
hour’s ride away by express train, Suzhou is renowned for its 2,500-year-old
city walls, elaborate Venice-like canal system, classical Chinese gardens,
beautiful stone bridges and sumptuous silk creations. A little further down,
150km southwest of Shanghai, Hangzhou is one of China’s most cherished
cities and home of the famous export, Longjing tea. A serene retreat for
emperors in the past, the city’s West Lake has inspired generations of writers,
painters and poets. Equally accessible albeit in the northeast, Nanjing is one of
the ‘four great ancient capitals’ of China, having served as the capital for six
dynasties as well as, in modern times, the Republic of China. Nanjing has also
been a centre of education, transportation and tourism throughout Chinese
history and is today the second largest commercial hub in the East China
region, after Shanghai.
Local Attractions
A bustling international metropolis with a rich ancient Chinese heritage,
Shanghai offers much to see and experience. Oriental TV Tower is the
ubiquitous symbol of the city. Standing beside the Huangpu River and The
Bund, it is at a height of 468 metres. Yuyuan Garden is the largest of
Shanghai’s ancient gardens, with landscaping styles that date back to the
Ming and Qing dynasties. Jade Buddha Temple is one of the most famous
Buddhist temples in Shanghai. The white jade Buddha statues were brought
here from Myanmar in the nineteenth century. Designed by French architect
Jean-Marie Charpentier, Shanghai Grand Theatre, featuring a futuristic glass
confection with upturned eaves, offers a packed season of ballets, symphonies,
western operas as well as musicals.

The Shanghai Art Museum is housed in the magnificent 1933 Shanghai Racing
Club building, whose iconic clock tower overlooks Nanjing Road, China’s
premier shopping street. The Shanghai Museum, itself shaped as an ancient
bronze cooking vessel, showcases an equally magnificent collection of the arts
of China in its 11 permanent galleries; especially noteworthy are the galleries
featuring ancient Chinese bronze and ceramics. The Urban Planning Museum
helps make sense of the building frenzy that continues to transform Shanghai.
Its exhibitions cover the city’s development from fishing village to Concession,
to modern metropolis. M50, at 50 Moganshan Road, is a collection of art
galleries and artists’ studios squeezed into converted Concession-era
warehouses — an excellent spot for a glimpse of contemporary Chinese art.
Walks
One of the most famous destinations in Shanghai, and certainly not to be
missed, is The Bund. Situated on the east bank of the Huangpu River, this
2-kilometre sweep of architecturally significant buildings that once
constituted ‘Asia’s Wall Street’ has recently re-emerged as one of the city’s
swankiest areas. At night bright lights add to the convivial atmosphere as
people stroll along the wide riverside promenade. Visitors can expect to be
further rewarded at outlying ‘water towns’ such as Zhujiajiao and Qibao,
where ancient houses huddle by rivers running through the towns. Here
picturesque sights, flagstone-paved roads and the locals’ traditional lifestyle
are sure to slow your pace as you savour a scene straight out of a storybook.
Shopping
One of Shanghai’s prime attractions, Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is lined
with interesting restaurants and shops, including grand historic department
stores such as the Hualian (formerly Wing On). The area also features a
tramway that runs the length of the pedestrian mall. Dong Tai Lu Antique
Market, Shanghai’s largest antiques and curios market, hasover 100 stalls with
a mix of serious antiques and kitsch, ranging from fresh-from-the-factory
Cultural Revolution figurine reproductions to vintage lighting fixtures and Art Deco furniture. Xintiandi, a two-block area of refurbished shikumen
houses (Shanghai’s domestic architecture) alongside a Shikumen Museum
that depicts life in these historic lane houses, also features many gourmet
restaurants and haute couture boutiques, making a shopping trip here
nothing less than a cultural experience.

The first of China’s Special Economic Zones — and indisputably among its most successful — Shenzhen is today one of the

Located at the crux of the Pearl River Delta, Shenzhen allows easy travel to

explores the development of the city both before and after Deng Xiaoping’s

Exhibiting Shenzhen’s burgeoning reputation as a centre for design, The OCT Loft Art and Design Gallery occupies refurbished industrial spaces and
regularly exhibits the work of domestic and international designers.
Walks
Colloquially known as the “Spring Cocoon”, the Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre is
a multi-use stadium that was designed to host the opening ceremony for the
recent 26th Summer Universiade. Now open to the public and with a seating
capacity of 20,000, the Sports Centre hosts both domestic and international
sporting events.
Individuals looking to escape the confines of the city proper will be rewarded
at the Shenzhen Mangrove Seaside Ecology Park, China’s smallest nationallevel nature reserve. An invigorating natural habitat for flora and fauna, the
park is a perfect destination for outdoor relaxation and entertainment.
Finally, visitors to north-central Shenzhen will find the Lotus Hill Park, which
offers hiking on the eponymous Lotus Hill as well as boating, fishing and kite flying. At the summit of the Lotus Hill stands a bronze statue of Deng

Government office building.

The Victorian-themed Donghai Shopping Plaza offers gourmet restaurants,

Haining
Thanks to its splendid culture, prosperous economy and rich landscapes, Haining is reputed as “the land of fish and rice, the
hometown of silk, and the city of leather”. Haining has a long history with over 6000 years’ culture. In the city, there are many
places of historic interests and scenic beauties. The world-famous Haining tides are called a “marvellous spectacle in this
world”. The scene is an “unparalleled spectacle” as described by Su Dongpo, a well-known poet in the Song Dynasty. Haining is
also China’s biggest production base of leather products.
Neighbourhood
Given its central location within the Zhejiang province, travelling to Haining is
extremely convenient – a half-hour travel time by high-speed train to
Hangzhou, the provincial capital of Zhejiang with natural scenery of West Lake,
or within an hour to Shanghai, the metropolis where both financial hub and
traditional Shanghainese community can be found. Tourists can also
conveniently travel by train or bus to nearby cities such as Nanjing, Suzhou
and Ningbo. The historical tranquil riverside towns Xitang and Wuzhen are
located nearby.
Local Attractions
Haining tidal bore is reputed as an amazing visual wonder. At different
vantage points along the Qiantang River, tide chasers can experience the
spectacular view of what are known as “one line tidal bore”, “colliding tidal
bores” and “returning tidal bore”. Tide-watching on 18 August of the lunar
calendar is a long-standing tradition in Haining dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Remains of ancient walls can still be seen in ancient
Haining’s capital today. Immerse yourself in impressive historical and cultural
charm on Prime Minister Mansion Street where different kinds of bridges,
teahouse, former residence of local celebrities, temples and traditional
architectures reside.
Founded in June 1958, Haining Museum reposes on the west side of famous
beauty spot Xiashi Ziwei Mountain. Now there are more than 6,000 pieces of
collections in more than 20 categories, including jade articles, paintings and
calligraphies from the New Stone Age to Majiabang Culture. The museum
opens along with subordinate units Xu Zhimo’s former residence and Yan Fen
Cao Hall every day. Established in 1996, Qian Juntao Art Gallery displays the
entire collection donated by Mr Qian Juntao, which includes Ming and Qing
paintings and calligraphy, works of modern masters, as well as his own works
to Haining.

Ningbo
Ningbo is the historical and cultural centre of Yangtze Delta of China, and is also a centre for finance, commerce and
technology. With a history of over 7,000 years and being one of the starting points of the ancient “Silk Road on the sea”, Ningbo
is now one of the fastest developing cities in China. Iconic attractions of the city include Tianyi Library, Hemudu relics, Xuedou
Mountain, Dongqian Lake and Xiangshan Fishing Port.
Neighbourhood
Ningbo has long been overshadowed by its neighbours across Hangzhou
Bay – Shanghai to the north and Hangzhou to the east. Today, it is often seen
as a point departing for the holy Buddhist island of Mount Putuo. Ningbo is
connected to Shanghai by a few hours’ ride over the world’s longest transoceanic bridge, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, while its convenient location

Shaoxing and the Zhoushan Islands.
Local Attractions
Ningbo’s history takes shape in major attractions like the modern Ningbo
Museum, where exhibits run from the region’s Neolithic artefacts to the
20th century, and Ningbo Old Bund, where European colonial powers were
set up in the wake of the First Opium War. On the other hand, traditional
Chinese culture is showcased in such historic sites as Tianfeng Pagoda,
Ningbo Drum Tower and Ayuwang Temple. Ningbo is the birthplace of the
garment industry in modern China. Since 1997, Ningbo International
Fashion Festival has become one of the most anticipated events in the city.
Ningbo is enclosed by numerous outlying attractions easily reached: the
most renowned is Dongqian Lake while dozens of tea farms, temples and

The history of the Neolithic Hemudu culture, which dates back to 7,000 years
ago, is documented in the modernly-designed Ningbo Museum. Ningbo’s
cultural history can also be discovered in the gardens and exhibits of Tianyi
Pavilion Library whereas the latest culture is displayed in the Ningbo Museum
of Art. There are more facets of Ningbo life: the Qing’an Guild Museum
detailing Zhejiang’s maritime history, the Ningbo Tea Culture Museum sitting
on an islet in Moon Lake and the Banking Guild Hall telling the story of how
the city influenced the development of banking in Shanghai and the country.

At Ningbo Cultural Plaza, different kinds of intriguing facilities can be found,

The glittering shops at Tianyi Square, the centre of Haishu district, offer a

foreign brands. With a short walk from Tianyi Square, Heyi Avenue provides
more upscale options – branded stores like Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior.
Opposite to it is the Old Bund, primarily an area of bars and restaurants, is
becoming home to stores selling jewellery, domestic goods and more. For those
who look for economical goods, simply head to the Drum Tower or
Chenghuang Miao (Temple of City God) opposite to Tianyi Square. Both are full

Xiamen
Known as ‘The Garden on the Sea’, and also Amoy, Xiamen is a major port city on the southeast coast of China enjoying a subtropical climate with exceptional natural scenery, fresh air and a clean environment.

Neighbourhood
Located in the southeast coast of Fujian Province, Xiamen offers easy access to

Local Attractions
Rich culture, unique beauty and historical background make Xiamen a hot
tourist destination in China. Gulang Yu Island, the pearl of Xiamen, is

architectures and pianos. It is unique in China as a ‘Traffic Free Island’, being
connected to the main Xiamen Island only by ferry. With more than 1,300 years
in history, Nanputuo Temple is deemed to be the most famous Buddhist
temple in Xiamen. It was built into the mountainside, attracting numerous
visitors year round. Close to its south is Xiamen University, the first university
in China founded by an overseas Chinese. The campus is noted not only for a
rich academy atmosphere, but also for its historic buildings, with walls and

Discover the three famous museums on Gulang Yu Island: Located where
Zheng Chenggong stationed his troops and trained his naval forces, Zheng
Chenggong Memorial Hall was built in commemoration of the recovery of
Taiwan from the Dutch. Piano Museum is a showcase of ancient pianos from around the world, where an impromptu piano recital is given every half an hour with a dedicated introduction. Organ Museum is the world’s largest
museum and the only of its kind in China, with more than 100 organs on display.
Overseas Chinese Museum was the first museum in China devoted to the
history of overseas Chinese. Xiamen Olympic Museum is a non-profitable
international organisation and the first Olympic Museum in China, where rich
collections of Olympic culture relics are displayed to promote the Olympic
culture and spirit. Xiamen Culture and Art Centre, the largest cultural venue
ever built in Xiamen, consists of a library, an art museum and a technology
museum, making the complex a huge centre for cultural activities integrating
culture, tourism, leisure and exhibition.
Walks
Strolling is a great way to explore Xiamen. Try the beautiful boardwalk
stretches for 6 kilometres along the Island Ring Road. Along the way, tourists
may lean on the railing to enjoy the limitless ocean scenery. Visit Wuyuan Bay
Wetland Park to see the harmonious coexistence of man and nature with
wooden plank roads, pavilions, towers and bridges, which is also a paradise for
