2007-2008 Annual Report - AIDS Healthcare Foundation
AIDS Healthcare Foundation 2007/08 Annual Report Innovation for Humanity The Global AIDS Challenge We are at a critical moment in the fight against AIDS. Much progress has been made over the last five years. Millions of people living with HIV/AIDS in the developing world are now receiving treatment. Lives are being saved. Orphans prevented. Hope inspired. But the need is still so great. While large numbers of people across the globe now have access to lifesaving care, at AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) we are acutely aware of the millions yet to be reached. And, it is this knowledge that compels us forward. AHF is confronting the global AIDS challenge with new ideas and bold solutions. We are fighting a daunting foe with innovative approaches to healthcare delivery and advocacy, with unique social enterprises designed to maximize sustainability and with a global operation dedicated to serving local needs. In our work, innovation is key. The urgency of the pandemic demands it. Human lives are depending on it. Hundreds join AHF in a march through the streets of Mexico City to demand ‘Universal AIDS Action Now’ on August 3, 2008 the opening day of the XVII International AIDS Conference. Innovation for humanity | 1 Our Mission Letter from the President Cutting-edge medicine and advocacy, regardless of the ability to pay. The long journey to global AIDS control continues to take many twists and turns. When AHF was formed and treatment was not available, we were limited to helping people face death with dignity. We hoped for a magic bullet that would cure this devastating illness in short order, but it didn’t come. As an expert in the delivery of HIV/AIDS medical care and an influential advocate, AIDS Healthcare Foundation is on the forefront of efforts to control AIDS globally. We develop and advocate for effective prevention strategies, work toward the expansion of HIV testing worldwide and play a major role in the scale-up of antiretroviral treatment delivery. Now in our third decade of leadership, AHF is providing treatment, care and support services in twenty-two countries on five continents. We will continue to marshal our forces in an effort to stay ahead of the epidemic—measuring our success in infections Our biggest enemy is complacency. Then the miracle of the “cocktail” became available and AIDS was transformed into a manageable disease. Unfortunately, hope was confined to a few wealthy countries. Activists protested and the price of drugs came down. Clinics began to sprout up across the globe. AHF led the charge, opening some of the first free antiretroviral treatment clinics in Africa and then expanding to other countries in need. Treatment gave hope to millions, and the pall of AIDS as a death sentence began to lift. There are so many reasons to celebrate. But we are in jeopardy of faltering. We know what it takes to control AIDS globally. The question is, are we sufficiently prevented and lives saved. motivated to make it happen? We know that mass condom education and distribution is the most successful prevention method. We know that only through routine testing in all healthcare environments will we find the vast majority of people with HIV who don’t know they are positive. Likewise, we know that the small down People treated: 93,000 in 20 countries payment on treatment we have made is only the beginning of the battle. Our biggest enemy is complacency. We cannot stop to pat ourselves on the back. The fight against AIDS has only just begun and if we stall now because we lack the will and discipline to fight the virus to the end, the fault lies with us. 65 Treatment Centers In AHF’s ongoing quest to stay ahead of HIV/AIDS, we continue to innovate. The knowledge and experience we have accumulated in the last twenty years is saving tens of thousands of lives directly and millions indirectly. From testing centers in Tijuana, Mexico to the Magic Johnson Healthcare Centers in Jacksonville and Miami, Florida to our Center of Excellence in India to the Ithembalabantu 13 Clinic in Umlazi, South Africa to the St. Balikuddembe-Owino Market in Kampala, Uganda, AHF is on the cutting-edge of AIDS treatment and education. Pharmacies We will not let the world rest until AIDS is no longer a scourge. There is no time to rest. 250,000 HIV Tests Michael Weinstein President AIDS Healthcare Foundation 2 | AHF 07/08 annual report Innovation for humanity | 3 Combating Complacency Delivering Expert Care Through Healthcare Centers, Pharmacies & Managed Care With Public Health, Policy & Testing The 2007 launch of AHF’s Public Health Division —formerly our Prevention and Testing Department—demonstrates our commitment to innovative Healthcare Centers: California Antelope Valley Downtown LA El Monte Hollywood Oakland Redondo Beach San Fernando Valley San Francisco Upland West Adams Westside Whittier AIDS Healthcare Foundation has been meeting the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS since the earliest days of the epidemic.
